As far as edgy realtraveller shit my peak was probably getting escorted out of northern Afghanistan by a Tajik military convoy. One of the guys in our group could speak some Polish and was able to very loosely communicate with the Tajik guys since they spoke Russian and apparently the Taliban was operating in the area and we were lucky that the Tajiks found us first. They made us park behind an abandoned building on the Tajik side of the border river and to make matters worse a pack of dogs attacked our shelter that night lmao

Cool realtraveller shit was walking the red carpet at Shanghai fashion week in 2015. The Chinese are all literally computer programmed so any "act like you belong" shit works easy as fuck. Just threw on some nice clothes with a girl from my hostel and walked past security. Did a 30 second interview with Chinese television and shook a bunch of hands, never found the clip online though not matter how hard I've tried. Only awkward part was that seating was assigned and we didn't have any.

Driving around Northern Iraq has always impressed folks when I tell them.

No guide, sleeping in the car on the side of random roads. Accidentally started a massive wildfire right next to one of the oldest Christian monasteries in Iraq.

I don't see how this is relevant. It sounds like blaming the victim. That day I was dressed demurely in cargo shorts, Chang muscle shirt, sandals and socks. But I was supposed to get a massage so I undressed and covered myself with a small towel. The girl who entered the room was pubescently hormonal. Then she undressed and I was so scared I couldn't move.

Always wanted to go there but you're only rly allowed if you're a journalist with credentials or with an NGO. NGO's aren't taking anyone at the moment and I'm a freelance writer but I don't work for any major outlet who could give me the letter of recommendation, so I've been in contact with the Palestinian Authority and various journalists who work there and so I've got an official invite that should be acceptable to the Israeli guards at Erez. I'll keep you posted.

North Korea is the destination that stuns normies without fail.
A standard tour is fairly easy to organise (if you're not Korean or American), so if somebody points that out, you just need to double down about having been to places that aren't Pyongyang or the DMZ.

Now, Turkmenistan on a transit visa is an actual challenge, but most people don't even know this country exists, so it's not so useful as boasting material.
>>
>>1952085
I've been to Iraqi Kurdistan. IMO it's a pretty easier-tier place, but most people hear "Iraq" and just fixate on that.

I’d be willing to do it for Turkmenistan since they don’t seem quite as evil as NK.

>moral dilemma of handing over money to the Kim regime

I mean, if you're an American taxpayer you've basically funded one government run by an incompetent reality TV star and a subsequent government that has explicitly shown its contempt for white people/culture (specifically white men) and an intent to destroy those things permanently. I think once you've tithed twenty-ish percent of your income into those enterprises you've pretty much got nowhere to go but up.

>>
>>1952085
Usually saying that I actually speak Japanese is enough to make Japan work. I have plenty of stories of places people cannot go to without the language.

I can suss out travelers I generally want to talk to in a few ways -

Are they a dick? If not, even if they’ve only been to the Eiffel Tower in Paris and think that is the most amazing experience ever, I try to be nice and can usually still enjoy hearing their glee about this. Travel is expensive and I am privileged to have gone all the places I have.

Here are my “advanced mode”:

Have they been to Africa continent outside of a safari?
Have they been to Colombia, Brazil, or somewhere else in LATAM that is “dangerous” according to most Americans?
Have they been to Russia? (Really, any city, for some reason people are super afraid of this and treated me like I was going to a war zone)
Have they been outside of Beijing and Shanghai in China?
Do they think the DMZ is scary? (Not wanting to Kim any money I understand, but the DMZ isn’t even nk)
Indonesia or Philippines?

I really am not an expert in the MENA region so anyone who has spent any time there I’m always down to talk to.

I generally give kudos when people have been somewhere that is not in England, France, Spain or Italy (and they aren’t originally from there. Most folks I know are immigrants and that doesn’t count exactly the same way). I do not like when people act like Shanghai and Beijing were life changing and that they are cultured for having been on a baby’s first China trip. Same for when they act this way about Europe. If they’re nice though, like I said above, that’s one thing.
>>

Unironically yes.
The Americans and their masters have inflicted more suffering onto the world than North Korea could ever dream of doing.
>>
>>1952495
Jokes on you. I am American but I’ve avoided paying taxes for quite some time. Granted, I was paying taxes to a Uncle Xi instead, so I suppose it’s not much better.

But seriously, is there an easy way to avoid paying taxes that all you anons have figured out? I don’t like the idea of my taxes going towards any government but it seems like the alternative is becoming a forced laborer in a state prison.

If taxes are treated an unavoidable evil, I stand by my assertion that taking the NK tours is worse, as that is money you are voluntarily handing over to the regime.

If you really need to see NK just take a boat tour from Dandong China like me.
>>
>>1952894
>If you really need to see NK just take a boat tour from Dandong China like me.
Visiting Dandong and peering over at Sinuiju is nearly the same amount of cope as the ones pretending that visiting the DMZ equals having been to North Korea.
>>
>>1952085
this picture makes me so mad for some reason
>>
>>1952896
The boat tour I was referring to actually took me down a river into North Korea. If the boat had capsized, I would have had no choice but to swim onto North Korean land. I waved at emancipated North Koreans digging for clams on the shoreline. I bought sketchy baijiu from a North Korean fisherman (or maybe just a Chinese larper).

Not trying to brag, it’s not that impressive, but it was a whole lot better than checking out the DMZ.
>>
>>1952925
Not the anon you replied to but that doesn't count.
Being on a boat isn't visiting somewhere.
I did the DMZ tour and visited panmunjom as it was one of the few times it was open. Stood in NK, waved at the NK soldiers but I still wouldn't say I've visited NK
>>
Not to derail the thread here, but a lot of the things posted so far sound awesome, but I don't understand how one actually does that stuff in practice. Maybe I'm just a pussy, but I don't understand how people shit when doing long hiking trips, for example. How do they wipe their asses? How do they have food and water?
>>
>>1952970
You bring food, water and toilet roll with you.
>>
>>1952970
>shit
Either find a toilet or dig a hole. Bring toilet paper, but dispose of it properly/burn it/pack it out. Alternatively, use leaves/moss/compacted snow/rounded stones/... or a combination thereof.
>food
Bring your own (dried) food, choose a route that allows resupplying or has eateries of some sort. Establish food caches for long distance hikes where resupplying isn't an option. Or use pack animals. Whatever, plenty of options.
>water
Bring a filter, a stove, a steripen or purifying tablets/drops, as these allow you to drink just about any water after purifying it. Melt snow or ice in winter, get it from streams or lakes otherwise. Or, if opting for the resupply tactic, ask people.

Pretty straightforward all in all, the same ideas apply in daily life. Either bring what you need or make sure you can get what you need along the road.
>>
>>1952951
Wasn't claiming to have visited. My original post was about 'seeing' NK. I came and saw it as a little day trip during a bigger trip around Dongbei China.

Also walked along it's Northern border in several parts of Jilin province.

My main point is that there isn't much to see or do by actually going to NK, I think people do it just to brag (as this whole thread is about) but I think you can impress people almost as much just by stating you've actually waved to North Koreans, and that way you aren't funding the Kims.

And I'd prefer to check it out from the China side rather than join the legion of faggots going to the DMZ.

That's my flex, however I have found out that showing is worth much more than telling.
Telling people that you speak multiple foreign languages won't mean much to them in the age of studying Spanish for five minutes a day with the funny bird app.
Having conversations that seem fluent to an outsider in a language they don't understand usually impresses people, even if it is not actually as fluent as it seems to them.

Personally I don't understand the point of traveling outside of america, it's a huge nation and there's so much to see and experience here. Before going anywhere else you should take a road trip all over the US and maybe some parts of Canada.
>>
>>1961514
I’ve driven from coast to coast and lived abroad for 6 years.

The USA does have amazing diversity in its nature and the difference between northerners and southerners is stark, but aside from the natural beauty, the USA doesn’t really offer the excitement you get from visiting distinctly different cultures with entirely foreign rule books on what’s normal.

The fact that a country as big and diverse as the USA is as homogenized as it is is at once impressive and boring as fuck.

>the USA doesn’t really offer the excitement you get from visiting distinctly different cultures with entirely foreign rule books on what’s normal
Not entirely true. For a white, I bought into the yuro propaganda that Americans were all the same, but as a west coast city slicker that moved to the South I didn't realize how out of touch with the rest of the country I was. Rural southerners don't really smile and they're much more blunt, also super conservative. Kind of remind me of Germans and eastern Europeans. They're different enough that they kind of freak me out. The big divide in the US is rural versus urban. Urban and rural America really sort of do feel like different countries.

Although, yeah, obviously it's nowhere near the cultural differences in Europe. That should go without saying.

And before a bunch of angry southerners tell me to fuck off out of the South: I will, pretty soon here. Chill out. I voted red.

Imagine bragging that you get mistaken for Europe
>>
>>1961668
Not a brag, just pointing out that people don’t associate Americans with being able to form coherent sentences.
>>
>>1960909
Lol Europeans (outside of UK) aren't charming at all and neither are you. I guess the mistake makes sense.

>UK populace are generally charming

The story I use if I'm ever asked to boast

>in rural quebec
>walk into only bar in town
>everybody talking french
>hot french canadian bartender excitingly asks if I'm american
>yea
>she yells and tells the whole bar
>bar erupts, 3 people immediately buy me drinks
>wtf I'm a fucking celebrity
>1 of the 2 people fluent in english invite me to stay with him with his friend
>walk to their place
>buy 40 beers and several pounds of cheese curds
>get drunk and eat cheese
>his friend passes out
>walk back to bar
>bartender passes out
>customers run the bar for her
>they invite over a punk rocker and a stunningly hot chick
>do coke in our underwear under 4 am.

My actual favorite memories rarely make good stories, but this was both. It was literally my first day in a foreign country and gave me unrealistic expectations of how I would be treated in foreign countries.

Reading the thread after posting this, I realize most of you are posting dangerous stuff, not cool story bragging. Other than some hitchhiking I did when I was young, I avoid danger like the plague. Still, just talking about hostels or drinking with liverpool homeless or visiting japanese prostitutes is more than enough to impress most Americans.

Yeah Real Traveller is a technical term. I've been to over a hundred countries, yet still I'm not a Real Traveller.

Once on my way to Ya’an to see the giant pandas, I got stuck out in the middle of bum fuck nowhere in southwest Sichuan way out in the mountain valleys.

Seemed like My girlfriend and I were stuck there for the night, but before we gave up, we decided to try hitchhiking for shits and giggles.

First big rig that comes by stops and we climb in. It’s a Tibetan long haul trucker playing badass Tibetan tunes who has us ducking down at every toll booth to avoid questions. After several hours of incredibly scenic driving we get to Ya’an without paying a cent. I he didn’t even accept the money I offered him.

Mine is nowhere near as impressive as some here but I went to Alaska and hiked on a glacier.
All of my friends and most of my family pretty much haven't left my home state (Victoria, Australia) and those that have mostly have been to the more basic places like NZ or Bali so I can always pull it out.

hot, boring and empty. People were friendly but confused why Americans would even bother coming to their shit hole country

>Cameroon
amazing black sand beaches and beautiful countryside. Spent some time with staff at the American School of Douala and I started getting the impression that they hated the locals and spent even more time in a drunken haze than my old ESL counterparts in China.

>lived in China for a year
miss it dearly, should have stayed for another year, there was nothing good waiting for me back in the US.

>container ship across the Pacific Ocean
Good for quiet time away from the world but no reason to do it again.

They are though. Should've specified "Britain" because Irish are not very charming. But English and Scottish are probably the most charming people on earth. West Africans and Latinos come in second and third. Everyone else is basically autistic in terms of cross-cultural charm.

Only awkward part was that seating was assigned and we didn't have any.

haha based, when I was younger in London I used to crash film premieres like that, but needed some fence-climbing or other shit to actually get it. Good work.

Awesome pic. Death Valley, CA? I have also travelled extensively across America but find the cities bland and underwhelming. Same chain stores with no distinguishing characteristics. I much prefer spending my time in the National Parks. My routine is to rent a car as soon as I land at the airport and exit the urban area as quickly as possible. I can enjoy the city skyline in the rearview mirror.
