In my opinion, it’s St. Louis. It’s in the US, which automatically puts it in “most soulless” contention, and it also has a murder rate in the top 10 highest in the world despite being in the first world. Hard to argue that the title can go to any other city.

Why does high crime = soulless? I’ve never been to St. Louis but I know that a lot of great music has come from there, they have an iconic baseball franchise, and those buildings look somewhat cool.
>>
>>1915417
Because /pol/
>>
>>1915417

High crime = soulless because developers aren't keep on the upkeep of areas that continuously fall victim to "diverse and vibrant communities." It probably goes without saying but that's just newspeak for "low income and violent minorities"
>>
>>1915417
It doesn’t. Chicago and DC are examples of cities with high crime but have plenty of soul and identity.

Places like STL, Kansas City, Memphis are just shitholes with no soul to begin with and the crime only adds to how bad the place is

As far as place I've lived. It would be this shithole
>traffic
>have to take the interstate no groudlevel routes
>suburban sprawl
>boring downtown that has like 2 bars
>All the walk-able neighborhoods are either ghetto or filled with out of town students
>have to drive 30 minutes to get anywhere
>the university is like it's own desperate city
>only cool parts are the lakes and capital building
Don't think I ever traveled to a place as boring and bland as Baton Rouge. Maybe in other states but not other countries
>>
>>1915701

The city hasn't really updated its look since the 70s and 80s. Now all that pops up is suburbs
>>
>>1915708

you gotta get out of there
>>
>>1915708
My experience with anglo cities is that the zoning laws and car culture create these "fake" downtown areas where almost nobody lives, and endless suburban sprawl, which is just disgusting.

South european cities are a mess, and often very ugly, but they never feel as void and fake as this kind of place.

Of course the "liveliness" of the city usually adds next to nothing to the life of a wageslave like me but it is still a comfort.
>>
>>1915716
I've moved away years ago thankfully. I still dread the memories of the place. My god I remember wasting hours of my life sitting on I-10 and I-12. The city is made for the automobile and nothing else.
>>1915720
>"fake" downtown areas where almost nobody lives, and endless suburban sprawl, which is just disgusting.
Pretty much. The only thing that's in the downtown is offices which everybody who works there drives to. This leaves a desolate downtown where you see nobody walking around and the whole place gives off a ghost town vibe. Honestly, even if some cities are dangerous at least there is a liveliness to them but with places like Baton Rouge the place might as well be a desert.
Of course there is a new fade in urbanism which I call the McMain St which is basically a block of historic buildings gets turned into a fancier strip mall with overpriced stores. I've noticed this in similar cities and Baton Rouge is trying this to an extent but people here just drive everywhere so it falls miserably here.
>>
>>1915722

where'd you end up moving?

Back to New Orleans where I'm from originally. Living out in Baton Rouge wasn't a choice, I was displaced after Katrina and that's were my family re-settled but after high school and I couldn't stand it.
New Orleans has a lot of problems but it isn't desolate like Baton Rouge. Fuck even the burbs here aren't as soulless as the CTRL + V /C suburbs around Baton Rouge. The biggest podcast out of Baton Rouge is literally called Baton Rouge Sux. It's a running joke that the city is universally hated. Even a neighborhood called St. George voted to leave Baton Rouge and form it's own city, that's how terrible this city is.

Sorry but its just a bunch of impoverished ethnic people in filthy ghettos, andrich white people who moved to NYC to pretend to be poor. >>
>>1914966
The word you're looking for to describe STL is shithole, not soulless. Objectively it is a shithole but there are still some decent older parts and pockets of soul scattered around the city and surrounding area. Soulless would be something like Houston, Phoenix, or Las Vegas.
>>
I’ve lived all over the Midwest and St. Louis while mostly poor and crime-ridden isn’t what I’d call soulless.
The Twin Cities (Minneapolis/St. Paul) are the epitome of soulless. I’d say Indianapolis is the runner-up, and I say that as somebody who loves both Minnesota and Indiana on the whole, just not those cities.

Look anon, all cities are soulless in their own unique ways. I live in a commuter town outside of NYC and it absolutely sucks balls. Even if I lived a little closer it still will make no difference. NYC is extremely overrated and expensive. I really want to explore and find something new but end up being disappointed every time. Make some research before visiting and be aware of your budget. Just figure out what you like about the city and just focus the positive aspect instead of bickering on "muh city is shithole niggerville". Just move to another city and you will see the same results.

All the stage around Minneapolis is great. Minneapolis itself is the least memorable large city I’ve been to. There’s nothing discernible about Minneapolis or Indianapolis that distinguishes them as anything other than just being a city where people live and work.
Of course both are much safer than St. Louis, Memphis etc, but they’re extremely sterile cities.
Minnesota is my favorite non-mountain state for scenery and Indiana/Kentucky have my favorite types of people, the right mix between southern hospitality and Midwestern laidback persona, but Indianapolis has nothing noteworthy about it.

I grew up in the bay, a lot of locals who didn't commute to SF for work avoided it unless there was a reason to go.
Gentrification and corporate sterilization ruined SF. SF used to be a place for gay runaways to make a new start for themselves, now it's a place for rich yuppies to hobb nobb over $14 beer. The place acts like Berkeley on social sides but may as well be new York on their building codes.
SF was never cheap, but it has never been unaffordable to the lower class, now the tenderloin is full of a weird mix of the absolutely destitute (homeless) and upper middle class.
>The culture
I'm just gonna come right out and say it. SF doesn't have a culture anymore. The gay district is now little more than mega chains with pride flags and a few, struggling, businesses. The pier is tourist traps and mega chains. Hard Rock Cafe and bubba gumps somehow gets more of the tourist money. Alcatraz is trash unless you book 3 weeks in advance you won't get on the only fairy that goes there.
BART is a mess, high crime and (ever since fruitvale) toothless police too afraid to write a ticket. It's essentially optional to pay.
The art scene is for the rich, no musuem in that city costs less than $50/ticket without some kind of discount.
The homeless run the street. They will literally just camp in the middle of a street and the cops will do nothing.
>But anon it's the famous city by the bay!
They aren't even the only city by the bay, Oakland is a shithole but it at least has a distinct identity. SF wants to be new York without the skyscrapers
>>
>>1914966
St. Louis actually has a ton of history. At the turn of the century it was the fourth largest city in America, the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi for about two centuries was a huge deal culturally. It is pretty miserable these days, but not more so than countless other American cities. Calling it soulless is silly, there are many other pejoratives that apply.

Contrast this with somewhere like Hannover, which has immense history but was sadly bombed repeatedly over the course of months to 99% destruction during the war. The quality of life there is unimpeachable, its a fantastic affordable place to live. But the bombs too
k all its charm away and its become a pretty soulless imitation of a commuter suburb.

Most of the techies don't even really live in SF anymore, it is more around mountain view.
SF is a lot smaller than people think it is, it is only slightly bigger than Columbus, OH by population. Most industry avoids it unless they are rich and want "muh prestige" of being headquartered in a major city. Also the tech "headquarters" are not really exciting to the city.
My GF and I went there pre-covid (like 2 years ago) and they wouldn't even let you tour the lobby of most places. Pintrest has a cafe, but that is about as exciting as it gets.
Also tech headquarters in general aren't exciting, most of these places have multiple headquarters and they don't really employ that many people.
Most of these places have headquarters in
>Austin, TX
>Atlanta, GA
>New York, NY
>Seattle, WA
>Delaware (for tax reasons)
There just isn't anything unique about the SF tech scene, the bay's tech scene largely excludes SF because of the constant regulation and taxes, Mountain View promised more land and lower taxes to tech companies so Google and Faceberg took it.
Their employees thank them for it too, your average tech worker making $150,000/yr would literally have to live in the ghettos of SF unless their partner or room mate also worked for the same salary (Which is not as common as people think)

Enjoy the SOUL of Minneapolis for about another 10 years at best, that city is about to be the next Detroit. I mean this in earnest, if you want to travel to the twin cities, do so within the next 2 years because they are going to die a slow, economic death thanks to the riots, reduced tourism from the Mall of America, and the public opinion that they are "unsafe."
>Tourists will stop visiting because they feel unsafe and they are a budget tourist location competing with other localities
>Business will dry up because hold for a few major chains, people will not want to move there.
At least Chicago was smart enough to separate their bad areas from their good and maintain a functional police force.
Tourism accounted for eight billion dollars for the city of Minneapolis. People aren't going to visit them anymore after the riots and the pandemic.

>>1916781
I went to Minneapolis back in 2019 and it was a beautiful city. I wonder how much the riots have actually changed the city?
>>
>>1916840
aside from the immediate vicinity not much. immediately after it was pretty grim with so many businesses preemptively boarding up with plywood and etc., but most places with any financial staying power have opened up. The local businesses that couldn't afford have closed up and with the covid restrictions there isn't a lot of interest in opening but even this past august/september when we thought we were coming out of covid things were looking again.

i think the biggest question is how minneapolis is going to react with permanent changes to police force, etc. There are a lot of wealthy residents in the south minneapolis/uptown area that will continue to support business
>>

Rochester, NY went through the same thing. The riots drove out industry to the point that nobody wants to fucking move there today. Same with Erie, PA., Detroit, MI and a few other places.
>>1916891
>i think the biggest question is how minneapolis is going to react with permanent changes to police force, etc. There are a lot of wealthy residents in the south minneapolis/uptown area that will continue to support business
Yes, but how many will stay and of the ones that do stay, how many will have children that stay? Once the schools go to shit (and they will) and downtown becomes unsafe (getting there) and the tourists stop showing up (they will) the real hurt begins.
Target and a few other places will stay, they don't want to look racist and "abandon their community" but other businesses don't mind. A handful of factories and businesses (some that employ hundreds of people) have already left.

For context, I am not saying that the place will totally fucking collapse, but it is not going to be the same place in 10 years.

The murders are only between people who know each other & aren't random, so unless you are into some very shady shit or are just retarded & aren't aware of your surroundings you'll be fine. I even frequent some of the more rough areas where murders do happen, and most of the people are genuinely good and the areas are safe enough to walk. There is plenty history here and we have our own culture, I have no idea why it would be considered "soulless". Maybe if you've never visited and had absolutely no idea what to do & where to go(no idea why that would happen, there is plenty to do here and a good amount is free if charge like the zoo). Figured I'd make my case, any questions let me know, I've lived in St Louis basically all my life.

Taipei never struck me as being soulless - if anything I interpreted it as being the opposite
All those mouldy brutalist buildings with moss and weeds on them feel as if they're slowly mutating into living organisms, decomposing into the mountainous forests surrounding the city
As the second anon mentioned all those rural small towns and mountainous forest areas surrounding the city seem really cool too

Definitely Venice and Paris.
Soulless does not just mean "shitty". London is more of a shithole than either of those, yet London still retains so much soul with pub culture and the buildings being run down because they don't want to renovate their history. Paris and Venice have just had their entire identity torn and there is no culture left to save it. All the buildings are renovated, and yet still they are trashed because the local population is filthy and ugly. The people are just human garbage without wit nor entertaining shenanigans to salvage the mess stumbling around living until they die in a hallow husk of what once was a city with identity.

pick one. I'll admit that I'm a far right /pol/fag but even then I'm not so up my own ass that I'll claim Cali has no soul. It's literally in the rest of the state. Catalina, Napa Valley (touristy af, i know, but far better than SF and LA), Lake Tahoe, any of the national parks, death valley... Cali is a unique place and frankly, the retarded politics don't add or take away soul from a city. San Diego arguably has a bit of soul given it's a big city with somewhat of a small town feel. Sacramento arguably is similar but not quite as nice as SD.

There's even an inadvertent soul in the face of industrialisation and urban decay. It's the bourgeois self-satisfaction inherent to modern Liberalism that creates the true soullessness we see today. This comes in two forms. Most widespread is the middle class strip mall and adjoining suburbs. More concentrated but culturally significant are the urbane, cosmopolitan enclaves of mostly tech and white collar workers, served by hordes of sallow, gigging minorities and downwardly mobile students.
>>
And we see this in action here in the thread. The defense of cities like SF and Miami is of course beauty and life to this class of people. Same thing with LA if the city hadn't undergone an influx of homelessness and flight of the wealthy. You'd have people going on about how lovely LA is.

This is a gulf of perception between people who have placed not only their material and financial interests but their souls and what it means to them to live as human beings, within two different and opposing camps. Violence is the only answer.

You're probably just some teenage dumbass who wants to feel cultured and hate your Midwestern family. Once you see the biggest this, the largest that, the worlds only indoor whatever, you realize the place is cultureless and offers no experiences you couldn't get elsewhere in the world with even the smallest tiniest bit of a middle eastern population. Its all chain stores and stuff bought. One of the only museums that tries to show the culture shows that it was nothing but fucking sand huts and minimal tools for hundreds of years then they found oil in the early 1900s and then suddenly they could build the world's largest (but mostly empty) sky scraper

If you go on vacation you can see everything worthwhile in a week, if you are very rich you can probably stretch to two weeks, but theres no reason to ever go back, especially since it is after all run by Islamic laws so its just a matter of time until you run afoul if you aren't a strict devout practicing muslim.

Almost the whole city is fucked. East and North STL are pure ghetto trash. There are neighborhoods and small areas of decency. As a native Missourian I couldn't think of any reason to actually go out of your way to visit from outside the area unless you wanted to try the food.

Imo's Pizza

We have SOME cool shit. STL Zoo is free to visit. Forest Park is kinda cool and holds a history museum and an art museum. STL Science Center is pretty cool, but mostly for younger kids. There's a place called City Museum which is really a neat funhouse for kids. Fox Theatre is cool if you like plays. The Arch is neat, also holds a museum below it. Unironically Berlin, it’s been so worn down with forced globalization and multiculturalism that, while extremely easy to get around in as someone who doesn’t speak any german, it feels like there is absolutely no hint of a unique culture there.

It's obviously San Fransisco.....i went there once and my pineal gland has been clarified ever since

It's Phoenix, Arizona and it's not even close.

>Urban sprawl with miles between some traffic lights
>Completely manufactured cookie cutter city centers
>Every person that lives there is a transplant
>Bland beige architecture everywhere
>Middle of the fucking desert
>Dry, hot, no fluctuation in weather
>People only exit their homes or businesses when the sun goes down
>Zero history, no connection to native american tribes that once lived there
>Garbage sports scene
>The most famous part, Scottsdale, is a just a huge shopping district with some clubs thrown in
>Mesa, glendale, etc. are complete shit holes
>No distinct industries
>ASU located there which is filled with braindead, vapid and drugged kids

It's basically Vegas without the fun

Brussels is shit because of the population, not because of the buildings.

Went through Denver for a week for a business trip, and can confirm being 100% underwhelmed. For a 'mile high city' it was entirely flat; the downtown area was pretty boring; had a decent (but not great) meal at Fruition; the tech center area where my work actually was had to be the very definition of soulless as well.

If you take a good look at US cities in general, you will see that their soul died the same time global corporate interests became powerful enough to displace (organized) criminal interests. Bringing down the mob seemed good at the time because the crime was legit troubling, but in its place we now have soulless corporations who siphon money out and away from the cities that they operate in. At least the mob was local.

I like San Diego and live there, and while it is not soulless it is not particularly soulful either. Lots of small-town issues dominate politics and in general most people here are still far too impressed by money as opposed to class or soul.

Is probably right about the most soulful city. New Orleans is something else. Southern towns in general (Savannah and Charleston are usually the others in trinity of Southern cities, but smaller towns like Oxford MS are nice too) have more soul than the typical US city.

Then you have the old industrial cities in the mid-west that have (or had) a different kind of soul (Chicago, Pittsburgh, Detroit) but are all deteriorating and generally becoming less soulful in some way or another.

About eastern cities.... I don't have much to say. Sartre wrote a decent short essay called "Manhattan: The Great American Desert" which you might enjoy.

Minneapolis. Nothing there but niggers and nordcucks. Very boring. The Mall of America is called the Mall of Africa by the locals. Also the sports teams suck with 0 championships.

I've heard it was referred to as, "SoMALLia of America"

There is more soul and culture in a town of around 500 in Wisconsin or the UP.

Denver is in the Great Plains. Western Kansas is nearly as high up and nearly as flat.
