Welcome to the Doll General!
A thread for discussion of fashion dolls including Barbie, Disney, LOL OMG, Living Dead Dolls, Licca-chan etc but not BJD.

Other toys considered dolls as well as girl collectable toys that are related to dolls or can be used as accessories to dolls are also welcome such as LOL, Capsule Chix, Shopkins, Polly Pocket and the like.

If you are someone who hates MGA but supports Mattel, explain yourself right fucking now
>>
>>9782237

The fact that there are people who feel the need to simp for either is fucking moronic. Just get whatever dolls you think look cool, they are literally kids toys, it’s not that deep

(And Licca Chan is better anyway)

Being a fan of either company is retarded
>>
>>9782237
While i agree most peoples are biased toward Mattel, liking and staning a company is counterproductive for you as as a consumer

whoever decided yellow should be Draculaura's tertiary color can go fuck themselves

it looks so awful
>>
>>9783354
The yellow is usually pretty nice, better than the light blue accent color they tried to give her in the reboot. More of her dolls should’ve had yellow because just pink and black got very repetitive.
Draculaura was my least favorite MH character for the longest time because she got way too many samey-looking dolls.
In canon Draculaura has a massive closet filled with clothes from every decade because of her long life, more of her dolls should have reflected that.

In retrospect Draculaura’s personal style may have been watered down because of all the newer characters added to the cast since wave 1.
She was “the Victorian Gothic girl “ until Elissabat was introduced, she was “the environmental activist girl“ for a bit because of being a vegan until Venus Mcflytrap came along, and she couldn’t even be the “vintage fashion with spiderweb motifs” girl after
Operetta took that niche.

Unironically yes, they do, especially if it’s a bunch of random designs that make your body look like high school notebook doodles.
The only tattoos that can look beautiful are Pacific Islander (Māori/Samoan/Tongan/Hawaiian) and Japanese (irezumi) traditional designs, and even then only if you’re part of that ethnic group.
But no, white w*men HAVE to get colored tats on their lower backs and ankles that blur and bleed into illegibility after 5 years. Clowns

the mh creeproductions are not only walmart exclusives, but only at "select walmarts" at that. what a weird decision by mattel, why not have it be a wide release? they thought it wouldn't do well enough for that? glad i already have all the mainline releases bc the walmarts here are terrible

Opinions on the Barbie signature look line? I’ve been looking through doll magazines and I want a more mature looking doll because dressing Rainbow High or Licca in mature clothing or lingerie looking clothes is too weird for me. I love the look of Dynamite Girls but I also don’t see a huge difference between those and a nice Barbie besides like $100.

I also think doing my own faceup on her could be fun, though I think she looks nice as is
>>
>>9785499
They're definitely the better Barbie dolls out there, price isn't too bad either, especially since you're getting the MTM body
>>
>>9785499
I really like them for customizing, the MTM body is nice and the face sculpts I've used so far lend themselves well to repaints. They have really neutral expressions so you can repaint them with different emotions, unlike a lot of barbies. I wouldn't buy them to keep them in box or anything but I think they are neat as a budget Integrity replacement, especially with a little work on the face and outfit to make them look more premium.

Any tips for restyling doll hair that don't involve boil washing and fabric softener? I have a doll with short hair that I've already don't some face work on, and the hair isn't cooperating, but I can't dunk it at this point. I've seen a couple tips that you can use product in it, but that seems iffy, and some people who just straight up fill the hair with glue and comb it into place (yikes!). I have an older Mattel character doll which I removed the head from. Every video I've watched showed them popping right off and easily reattached. I took it off and did some work on it, went to reattach it, and it won't go back on. The hole inside the head is smaller than the disk, and even heating it up, the whole head collapses down as I push it rather than pushing the hole around the disk in the peg. The more I push it, the more I feel like I'm damaging it. How should I solve this? Should I cut a slit to help the hole open? Try to bevel the peg?
Pic attached is the type of peg. It's flat on top and doesn't have the bevel that newer pegs of this type have.

>>
>>9782237

Also this
>>
>>9788419
>they’re sketchy and skirt around copyrights instead of working with the company they’re copying like Mattel would.
I was extremely surprised to see this get mass produced and in IRL stores having the no-doubt unlicensed use of the official 90s Barbie logotype, especially since the font seemed to leak online at around the same time as all the legal drama about the original Bratz dolls.
>>
>>9788419

Huh. That reminds me, Mmmmm MGA robot dolls. Does anyone know of any other robot type dolls there are? I think there was a monster high robot but she was ugly.
>>

>>
>>9788452
Not a shill for any company but Cheryl at the very best looks different enough you could chalk her up to being a cosplayer or whatever. Finn’s shirt on the other hand I can tell from my own download of the font is straight up the original copyrighted letter designs, and the fact they go out of their way to hide much of the graphic in official art gives me the impresssion whoever at MGA approved the design knew some sort of legal situation could of happened at any point, but Mattel curiously looked the other way still
>>
>>9788469

Different enough? You even spelled her doll name wrong and made it more like the Clueless Cher’s.

It’s so similar almost like a copy and paste cmon anon, you’re sounding like a shill for not admitting that.
>>
>>9788452

Now that you point that out. Her puff earrings remind me of this scene.
>>
>>9788469

Because Mattel isn’t going to go after MGA for a font they no longer use. It’s a bunch of these little thefts and defects adding up that makes Mattel a better and well known company as opposed to MGA. Not only in terms of creativity but also ethically.
>>
>>9788491
Mattel isn’t exactly a decent company. They once threatened legal action against He-Man. org so they could take the name. They do a lot of shitty things like that when they think they can get away with it.
>>
>>9788426

Barbie IS a iconic trendsetter too, and she has been around for decades. MGA on the other hand has had to try so many times to get their brands to stick. Besides you realize Bratz never went away. MGA just started sinking their teeth into other brands like Shopkins and riding on their coat trails. Then you realize OMG dolls were just Bratz and Bratz babies all along, just with a blind bag appeal.
>>
>>9788499

Anon I don’t think that’s giving the point you think it is. That’s a perfectly normal and just thing for a company who owns an intellectual property to do..

Also, did just actually do it or just threatened? Again..two different things and not truly making the point against Mattel..
>>
>>9788463

I wish I liked the robot but there’s just something about her face
>>
>>9788386

You’ll have to hook on of the pegs inside the hole first then push. You can always wrap the top of the peg with a mini clear rubber band though if it ends up messing up one of the pegs.
>>
>>9788512
I don’t know what point you think I’m trying to make, so I’ll just say it.

No company is your friend. They all only want one thing from you, and it’s your money. It doesn’t matter if you’re a fan, they’ll fuck you over if they think there’s monetary value in it.
>>
>>9788068

>>
>>9788505

I see your point there. Honestly though looking at the doll aisles right now MGA is dominating as opposed to the 90’s/00’s where Barbie had a whole aisle dedicated to her, now it’s just a portion.

MGA definitely hit the nail on the head when they decided to combine baby dolls/fashion dolls/blind bags into one unique creation though.

Though currently the tides of gimmicks is wearing down. MGA was smart to jump on the blind bag band wagon even though that trend is slowly being phased out.

MGA is probably on a high right now because of their current domination of the fashion doll market but Barbie and Mattel have been around since the 50’s and you don’t stay relevant if you don’t keep progressing.

I think it’s great when company’s come along and rival past conglomerates because it gives them a push to do their best.

Barbie really needs to just continue being Barbie though.

And let’s all just be honest this is truly not an actual competition between MGA and Mattel. It’s truly Barbie against everyone else.

And no one fucks with Barbie

This package looks like a random assortment of doll clothes you get at a thrift store, with some ugly homemade pieces mixed in
>>
>>9788875
>looks like a hospital gown
>pattern on front only to save money with cheap material in back
>>
>>9788808
I really like the deep dark skin tone of the tall one in the center, but both of the materials of her outfit are not going to age well. Silvery metallic material (the top) stretches and cracks, and synthetic pleather (the skirt) will flake off and crumble after a few years.

The first Barbie Looks wave had simple black and white outfits made from fabric that is fairly durable because it has no metallic or shiny coatings, so why were the second and third waves full of poor material choices?

Best over all? Damn, that is difficult to choose. On the one hand, the later dolls had some really cool bodies. On the other hand, the second wave dolls had top notch designs and details to their outfits (Clawdeen's brass knuckle ring, Cleo's hour glass shoes, almost everyone's bags with tons of painted details...)
Oh! Webarella! If I have to pick one MH doll as the best, it'd have to be her.
>>
Least favorite MH doll? Clawdia Wolf. It was a low-effort ripoff of Callie from SWAT Kats. Usually MH put in effort into their characters, that one was a pretty blatant copy that didn't even feel like it was trying to be an homage, just as if someone needed to fill a character slot.

The Chinese top thing didn't become an issue until they were leaked fairly recently, I doubt there was enough time to do damage control.

>>
>>9791033
I don't really see the rip-off/homage with Clawdia; more like both characters are the same stereotype/image of "sexy business lady".

My least favourite is Clawvenus; what a mess! If the fusion characters are cheating, then Elissabat. She was just an excuse to have two Draculauras for any given line.

Why do you care though? Why are you so intent on trying to convince others that this company giving us high quality playline fashion dolls is “actually le bad and racist so you must feel guilty for liking them”?
Did you really expect them to change the top at the last minute when the dolls had already been mass-manufactured? Do you people know how long the manufacturing process takes?

I think they stamp them on one color at a time like you described, though some newer dolls have pixelated printed on faces on, idk how they do those. Maybe look up "how are barbies made" on youtube? The MGA stans on Reddit are totally insane, I want to know the ages of that sub. I have -2 on a post because I said Delilah's eyebrows are too dark and don't really make her look albino.
>>
>>9792181
I use some super tiny expensive-ish brushes meant for miniature painting. I also use watercolor pens to paint, I can't get the hang of using them as pens as most youtube repainters do, but it just take it off them with a damp brush (a watercolor palette would work better i think). I also use these paints, they are really pigmented and nice! They are quite flowy, but I still thin them with acrylic thinner. You can get stuff like that from tabletop gaming stores.

Do RH have a fairly 'standard' body size for fashion dolls? I'm not much of a collector, but I want to make more doll clothing and have a Nicole Steel on the way.

sorry to burst your bubble anon but the CEO was pretty in the right with his fury here. How he said it was not well put but his intentions were "you are a liar and full of shit and for all the work you do promoting POC you are giving them a bad reputation"
This influencer really thinks a doll company went from nothing to a full blown doll release in the space of 6 months while they have openly posted their design timeline on the doll which began in 2018, 2 years before her Instagram photo. And for some reason people think the company should post their internal corporate concept designs and sketches online like corporate espionage isn't a real thing. No company is required to post their internal R&D process and if it IS needed it would be given to lawyers through a court proceeding. It never went to court though despite all the hubub said influencer made did it? Why because she knew she would lose OR she did seek legal help, was presented with the documents under an NDA and continues to say they still copied her.

But that would take logic and an understanding of how corporations work and a deign/prototype timeline. People are fucking stupid and this influencer really did bring up the race card repeatedly saying her race is why they don't credit her/slander her etc. when in fact she was a liar and using her race as a way to drum up support when she was in the wrong. The actual designer of the doll is also a PoC and now she can't use her own work because some shitty influencer has claimed that design as hers and only hers like fucking teal and rainbow is a hard combination to come up with.

MGA has done shitty stuff but this was not one fg them.

Thinking about an Interview or Lost Boys collab actually makes my stomach hurt because I want it so bad, I've done a couple of Mattel's preorder mornings to help out a friend but doing it for a doll I NEED makes me so stressed out.

It's like 50/50 male - female

A MH doll of Michael would be awesome
>>
>>9795521
Yeah, nice but basic. Mattel hasn't released any basic line Halloween dolls in a while, since 2016 I think, anything they'd release now would probably be boring and safe.

My tum tum hurts cause I NEED to CONSUUUUUME!
>>
>>9795668
Agreed or Jason.

Do you think they could get away with a daughter of King Kong?
>>
>>9795989

Children of the Damned would be a really cute doll since we’re going off Warner Bros studios films only

The bodies are nice and the clothes look like good quality, no good articulation though, and the faces are creepy. 4/10 it's just a fetish doll.

I have a feeling they're gonna be like Bratzillaz. Maaaybe like the Witchy Princesses line but I'm not getting my hopes up for anything too fancy.

I dunno, seems kinda gay to me

The faces are just ugly but i could see myself buying these figures if i had less self control
