==ZAKU GROUPBUILD==

Build and customize a mobile suit from the Zaku family in any way you can imagine! Any suit that has the word "Zaku" in its name is fair game, meaning you can use any of the following:
>Standard UC Zakus such as the Zaku I or Zaku II
>Variants such as the Act Zaku, Desert Zaku, Zaku Tank, etc
>ZAKU Warriors and their variants from the Cosmic Era
>SD Zakus
This means you cannot use the following for the main part of your build
>Other Zeon/ZAFT mobile suits (ie: Goufs, Gelgoogs, GINNs)
>Zaku expies from the Universal Century (HiZack, Geara Doga, Den'an Zon, etc)
>Zaku equivalents from other Gundam timelines (Leos, Grazes, Borjanons, etc)
You can still source parts from other kits for your builds, but the basis of your entry has to be at least 50% Zaku (ie: Swapping out the bottom half of a Zaku II with a Dom to make a Zaku II High Mobility Test Type would be acceptable, but throwing a Zaku head onto a Dom won't cut it). The 50% limitation refers only to the body itself, you're free to do what you wish with your suit's equipment.

Send all photos (Both WIPs and Finished photos, with multiple angles/poses) and a short description of your build to gunplaplamo@gmail.com once you're finished. Additionally, please state whether your home board is /m/ or /toy/ when you're submitting your entry. This information will remain private and won't be referenced with submissions, I just want to know which /gpg/ each entry represents.

How bad am I at picking kits? I picked designs I liked often but won't lie there were several that were just impulse buys because they were "good deals". I've been thinking about getting back in the hobby, posted last thread about something I was interested in. Most of the HGs seemed pretty bad. Fun to put together, but the end result was floppy and fragile. The Victory gundams were the most satisfying of the non-RG 1/144 (I army built the Victories). The 00 was so close to good, impressive considering how early it is but still had issues.

I started to put more effort to make the clean-up good, stepped up my lining game and bought paint equipment but I was really busy with school at the time so I didn't put it to use. Overall stop being the worst snap shitter, but I couldn't imagine the effort being worth doing absolute everything (paint, fusing panels) for HGs given what they were bringing to the table.

Guys, I'm tempted to make a hguc narrative full armor gundam using these parts. how similar is the NG NT in terms of proportion are they to the RG?

Don't worry about that pic, it isn't anyone's entry. That's just an image I got from Twitter of some japanese dude's Zaku.

As far as the cut-off date goes, what I usually did in the /m/ threads is to keep the submissions open after the deadline up to the creation of the new thread. Now that I'm doing this in two threads across two boards, it's a bit harder to do that, so I'm probably just going to commit to the date of the deadline given. AKA, you can submit your stuff on the 16th but after the 17th I won't be taking more entries.

On the topic of deadlines, I asked in the /m/ thread if they needed a brief extension to the deadline, so I may as well make the same proposition in here too. How does everyone feel about a 6-day extension to the groupbuild, moving the end date to the 22nd?

>>
>>9376250
Not directly on the runner. After you cut the pieces and do necessary nub sanding/nipping, then you wash them. Look into a ultrasonic cleaner and some dish soap.
>>
>>9376356
>Not directly on the runner.
That depends on the size of the parts. If the parts are tiny washing on the runner (or at least a piece of the runner) is easier and safer.
>>
>>9376356
>>9376374
sounds like pain lol, what exactly does it do cause i kinda wanna skip that step

It removes the oily mold release agent that makes your paint peel.
>>
>>9376387
>peel
fug, how about assembling everything then washing it?
>>
>>9376392
Leaving the risk of breaking off small protruding parts with a toothbrush aside, unless you are confident you can assemble everything 100% watertight, the water will seep in and might not fully dry by the time you start painting.
Guess what will happen to your paint coat.

Washes off all your "oils" from your "hands", you dirty masturbator. But really it does help get your fingerprints off and any of the mold release grease they use thst may be left over. I typically just wipe everything down with warm water and a bit of rubbing alcohol on a rag. Ir just chuck everything into a plastic tub and put some dish soap and water in it and leave it on a washing machine for a clothes cycle. Maybe use some tape so it doesnt slide off the washing machine.

Put together this building and another one by tomytec this weekend. Definitely worth the effort of gluing everything together.

Package from AmiAmi came today, ultimately decided to slip the Machinedramon kit in with the two figures I was expecting. Judging from the shipping box, I don't think it had much of an impact on shipping costs.

I don't even know how much time I spent tonight building it. It's very, very engaging and I had to force myself to put it away and get ready for bed. I did the head, torso, and arms tonight. I like to think that's about halfway done. Let me tell you, a sick-ass Machinedramon figure has been a boyhood dream of mine for many, many years, ever since I got to the end of Digimon World 1. Machinedramon is so cool. Putting this guy together is so fulfilling. I hope someone at Bandai is considering Millenniumon. I'm sure it would be a clusterfuck, but I don't care. I want it.

Wish I had pictures to share.

>ora ora ora ora ora ora ora ora...

If you're picking based on what you like, you're doing fine. Only people who are extremely picky have exactly what they intend to. If you have several kits that you only got because the deals there's nothing wrong with that, it just gives you more practice.

I'd recommend trying a kit or two from various series just to see what is most fun or worth it for you to build. I love wing and G kits for nostalgia, but Unicorn, IBO, and AoZ are more fun to build.

HG's aren't supposed to be "good" but they offer a wider range of suits than any other grades. I prefer MG's because they're large and detailed enough that I can appreciate from a decent distance. I've only snap built. HIGHLY recommend HAZE’N-THLEY II RAH, it is HG but its detailed and large as a MG.

I have some hand paints I might use, you wont see any nubs and sometimes panel line. I'll never be the people you reference putting days worth of time into a single kit to make it look amazing.

I've spent too much money on kits just because I enjoy building. I don't exactly love them all, but I can use those as parts for kit-bashing or just for practicing scribing/painting before I try on my preferred kits.

As soon as I woke up and finished breakfast, I went to work on the rest of the kit. I just finished it a few minutes ago! Goddamn I love this thing. I'm really glad they put the cannons on ball joints, call me weird but I wanted to flip them downward and angle them out just a bit like it had them in DW1.when it wasn't using Infinity Cannon. I'm so glad we can even do that. The MetalGreymon style breast missiles are also nice, takes me back to when I had the digivolving MetalGreymon as a kid, only this kit doesn't look terrible to accommodate a transforming gimmick.

I do have one complaint about the whole build, though. Just one. The tail, specifically that fucking wire. That goddamned wire nearly beat me, because I cut it too short like a retard. The neck wire at least used the peg as a handy guide for where to cut, but the instructions leaves you on your own for the tail. Thanks, Bandai. I ended up having to cut it in half and rethread the whole tail. It's holding together for now, but for how long with both ends cut, I'll never know. I don't suppose anyone could advise me on obtaining a replacement so I could maybe do it right this time.

Overall though, I had a blast with the kit and I would definitely do it all over again. God bless Bandai for making Machinedramon and not fucking it up.

I wash my hands and keep a towel nearby but I can never seem to keep from smudging my plastic with gross sweaty fingerprints and shit.
I hate having clammy hands.

unironically get a humidifier/aroma diffuser, I had that issue plus my face pores going waterfall mode during intense staring at parts, having the room be more humid from before alleviates that a bit + it smells nice.
I mainly got mine to reduce dust while working with paint and it works to some degree but I noticed way less annoying sweating.

you're not supposed to use godhands on clear plastic (more brittle and can snap the blades; especially the spn blade) and 99% of polycaps have the injection points hidden so there's literally no reason to care. Fresh hobby knife blade will outperform godhands for final cuts on PU.

sanding will also impart less stress marks on hard clear plastic itself. stress will go into the plastic no matter what of you flush cut. seems like you're working pretty hard here to justify your only slightly above average tools that you grossly overspent on.

Not true, see pic related. Clear plastic in particular has almost no stress if the cut is quick enough.

>seems like you're working pretty hard
I don't need to justify my spending, I'm simply pointing out that your statements are not correct.
>>
>>9379402
>Good luck sanding and then re-polishing a clear canopy.
I started building airplanes long before I got into gunpla. 2000 grit + polishing compound and a quick dip in future will make any canopy look better than new.
>Clear plastic in particular has almost no stress if the cut is quick enough.
Now do the same with hard, clear plastic and post results. Almost no stress ≠ no stress. Sanding = no stress.

Yes, like you said they're "pre snapped kits without additional work that was then modded". They've had work done on them to make them more than just the out-of-the-box kit. >>9382614
Everyone knew none of this and then got the information from somewhere. From a manual, with the tool, is as good a place as any to get it.
>>
>>9382412
You should be using literally whatever to cut pieces off of the sprue an inch or so away from the part. Then good nippers to clip the gates close to it (not against the plastic). Then shaving it down with a knife or going right to sanding.
The quality of the first tool is irrelevant as long as it cuts clean through even harder plastic. The quality of the second tool is more important if you’re not painting and far less important if you are.
The ultimatr awakening process is something like:
total newfriend “toenail clippers are good enough”
thinks he’s enlightened “you need Snapshit 3000 Memehands forged of thousand folded autism to cut right up to the part cleanly”
actual professional “toenail clippers are good enough but memehands sometimes save a few strokes of the sandpaper”
The difference between boxed wine and a $35 bottle is enormous but the difference between a $35 bottle and a $500 is much much less to the point that many experts will choose the $35 bottle. Same with nippers. In short, any reputable hobby brand’s nippers are fine but avoid cheapo ones and don't overpay either. Local place has memehands for $72 and they sell out constantly at this price, to plebbitors who also buy Apple every yeat and will defend the brands to the death. Pros (as in those who build models for a living) use whatever’s on hand and get perfect results with little effort.

Yes anon they reactivate the lower layer when the solvent in the fresh application hits it. This will happen with a brush, too. Markers are easier in that they’re as simple as coloring with pens on paper and you can use them in your living room then put them in a cup with your pencils and pens. No jars, solvents, thinning, brushes or cleanup. No art supplies shit.
But you do have to get it right the first time and can only expect so much. Otherwise we wouldn’t use anything else.

Yes, for clear parts. Nightmare mode clear parts (read:resin GKs) still require tons of sanding no matter what and still end up perfect and clear. I shape, modify and reshape whole clear parts in hard plastic and in resin all the time, sometimes things bigger than whole gundams (like 1/4 scale sake bottles or water effect bases splashing up around a mermaid). Sometimes nippers get used, other times a dremel tool or steel rasp. Then all the way on down to polishing compound then a t-shirt.
But I will say, if I was going to just do a very small job like plamo clear parts, sharp nippers will get clean results faster and more simply (although a sharp knife will just as well). Unless the cut itself is showing in which case your overpriced nippers still need me to follow them up with sandpaper or maybe a glass file.

I wasn't being sarcastic. It really is nice.

Since you seem to know what you are talking about:
Total newbie here with some clear plamo kits on the way. How do I not ruin my nippers cutting the parts, and what grits should I be using to sand the cuts? Is polishing paste necessary?

what >>9379264 said, I got mine when they were running about $40 and they reduce time on sanding but the trade off is you have to watch real close how near you get on the nub because it's really easy to take more than you should. I like them for most Mecha Musume stuff since a lot of the runners are either undergated or the nub can be cleanly taken off with practice and I usually just build and play with those rather than paint, but most Bandai and Good-Smiles I'm not really saving much on time because it's too risky to take right on the numb, as well as if I'm painting or doing touch up work like seamlining so I just stick with the free USA Gundam store nippers with those.
>>9379355
this is also true, a good sharp sculpting blade will have the same results on a nub -assuming- you put in the practice.

What, all 5 of them?

Seriously though, pic related. If you build something for a living, time you spend doing it determines your hourly wage. The more it takes you the lower your pay, unless you conned someone to pay you per hour not per finished item.
Have you seen a serious successful home improvement contractor with shitty power tools?

hi, i just finished this guy, is it okay to glue the fuck out of him? i've managed to get everything done by just being a snapshitter so far but he's really wobbly and a lot of his parts are coming off like shed skin

i have the same issue. take 100-200mg l-theanine 1-2 hours before building. you can buy capsules or bulk powder for cheap from any supplement store or even on amazon.
the sweating is probably from a very minor anxiety response. even if you dont really feel anxious, you are always aware subconsciously that you spent money on this and dont want to fuck it up.
l-theanine is an anxiolytic naturally found in green tea and responsible for its calming effects. it will get rid of any peripheral nervous system stimulation from anxiety without any of the drawbacks that benzos/alcohol have like retardation and loss of motor control and it's also non-addictive

Nothing's stopping you from glueing if you're not going to do anything else with it
>>
>>9384799
I appreciate the detailed response but it's not an anxiety thing. Building models is one of the most relaxing stress-relief activities I have. It relieves my anxiety.
This is a problem I have with everything dextrous. Playing games, building models, fixing electronics, etc.

Be glad that it's not. Imagine how poorly it would have been made at the price point that you bought it.
Now you get a chance to poorly make it yourself.

Some of you may know Shizuoka is the best place in the world, but look at their new revitalization project, "plastic monuments" that place signage on runners around the city.

yes i have the same issue. like i said even if you don't feel anxious.
maybe "anxiety response" was the wrong phrasing due to the connotation of intensity and mental turmoil, but hand sweating like that is a result of sympathetic nervous system activation

You're going to need to clean up the glue afterwards anyway so you should do it before paint

Now I don't have to constantly check different targets in person like a madman.
Should I have gotten more to resell them later?...

Who knows how many are really being produced. This could wind up like all the other Gunpla Target stocks and it's just part of what they have for months on end, or this could be it. I've got a spare just in case, but it may go to a friend if he can't find one.

reddit and twitter encompass everything. They are the most gigantic places on the internet and they hold every opinion and every piece of content you can possibly imagine, including edgy /pol/tard shit.
Spending all day reeeeing about them makes you look like an underage newfag trying to fit in. It's the equivalent of those loud nerds in highschool that had to let everyone know how much they hate normalfags who go out on dates or work out at the gym.

If you're concerned about paint, that implies you'll be gluing in places that will be visible rather than just internal parts. It's always better to clean up and sand off any residue that happens during the gluing process rather than ruin your paintjob.

Sorry if this is the wrong thread, I'm kind of new to this board and didn't know where to ask so I figured I should ask here..
Anyways,
I'm a newbie to gunpla and model building anyways and being a Patlabor fan I wanted to get the Good Smile Patlabor AV-98 Ingram and Bulldog kit to try and give this a shot. What am I in for? Should I go for something easier? Anything I should know?
>>
>>9387589
oh no it’s not like that, it’s just that the parts where the leg pieces connect aren’t really holding each other well and I think most of the parts I’ll be gluing are going to be hidden and static, like the innards of the robot. My problem is that they’re in separate colors so I wanna paint before I glue but I dunno how acrylic is gonna mess with the cement

If that's the case why don't you go back there? You obviously don't want to fit in here, so go back to where you belong.
>>
>>9387611
If you want it get it while it's available, but having built the Ingram I will say it's not the most newbie friendly kit. There's a few complex parts & some gluing is required. I regret not having gone for the combo set with the Bulldog now. You can always get some easier models to practice & build skills then come back to it later if you buy it now.
