Your average gunpla "builder" has no clue on how to use waterslides.
>>
>>9083990
I despise stickers, but modern MG/RG/etc stickers look fine on white pieces I would say. Dark colors are the problem.

Like, I have the PG unicorn coming in but don't plan to replace the stickers with waterslides, because honestly the stickers tend to look okay on it. Even if I'd prefer decals.

If I get kits with red logo from HS in 2021 does that mean they got interns to go to second hand shops and get them for me or they somehow have kits that had been laying around for 10 years?
>>

They don't make kits with the red logo any more so they either sat in a warehouse or someones shed for 3+ years, you can probably guess where they were sitting based off the condition of the box

UK friends, I'm looking at getting my first gunpla, and trying to figure out when it's worth ordering from Japan vs UK, ignoring delivery times.

So as I understand it, if the total value of the package is over £15, I'll most likely get hit by an £8 bullshit handling charge and 20% VAT, are there any other charges beyond that?

And I can dodge the charges if I get the seller to mark it as a gift and it's below £40, or just falsify the total to below £15, but bigger stores like hlj etc aren't likely to do that?

Anything else I should know?
>>
>>9084371
buy from the chinese, they usually mark their packages as a "gift".
>>
>>9084374
Like aliexpress? Are they not just going to send me bootlegs?
>>
>>9084375
Promise a hongkie you'll help them obtain UK citizenship if they send you gunpla.
>>
>>9084375
I'm just thinking about SEA model stores in general, if you find a store you can ask their customer support if they mark packages as gifts.
I'd recommend sealmodel but a lot of people have had some issues recently with orders and such, I managed to make an order in january that went through fine myself though.
not sure about UK gift price tax and how it works but it seems to start at £39 after googling and is a little bit more strict than other countries, seriously though just make an order somewhere to see if it manages to get through customs for free.
also
>And I can dodge the charges if I get the seller to mark it as a gift and it's below £40, or just falsify the total to below £15, but bigger stores like hlj etc aren't likely to do that?
yeah bigger stores just don't do that afaik, and I don't think the japanese do that in general.

The batteries won't hold a charge? They're button cell batteries, you're supposed to swap them out. And if its not lighting up then you probably screwed up as those LED units they came with were pretty nice and well planned out.

To be fair though while while the other guy is an idiot and confused waterslides for stickers those waterslides the plamax PR kits came with were absolute garbage and would tear and dissolve really easily.
>>
>>9084371
Curious-is Ebay a option where you are? Im a burger and have been buying a fair amount of kits from the site with free shipping, and fair prices as long as I shop around. The selection is usually pretty good also. Is the market just not there in the UK?

Bandai has never had decent decals or stickers. Theyve always been shit going back to early 90s mmpr. Still use the same shit sticker type to this day too.

Definitely getting this kit though.
>>
>>9085063
Bandai dry transfers are amazing, and the decals they send with Ver. Kas are as good as any in the industry.
>>
>>9085077
>Bandai dry transfers

Some of them randomly degrade, even if the kit in question isn't old. They're extremely finnicky. This is why half the time they will break if they're a large decal. When they work right they're fine though.

I buy shit from mandarakee and send packages from buyee(auctions, mercari, suruga ya) and weirdly im not paying customs, vat or shit beyond shipping and the middleman service since december 2019, dunno why is that but I even got 6000 yen/ 5kg packages from mandrake and didnt have to pay a cent after shipping.

Last time I paid customs was random as fuck too, once was a set of books 12 pounds worth that wasnt any different from many othe packages that got through and when I got a zudah hg that got sent in a exccesively big box in the sense it was a big oranges crate just for a hg, had to pay 6-12 pounds in these last cases. this year I got a crazy haul and im hoping come birthday all these presents dont have any customs to pay, more than half are here witth me already and ive saved at least a hundred in customs taxes.

I dont know whats happeing but If like me youre in london just try It see If they bother charging customs, I thought with rona and brexit things were gonna change a lot but so far Im customs duty free.

it might have something to with holiday seasons and a lot of people getting packages.

lockdown holiday maybe, I bought more shit than ever in my life, from rare novels to moderoids and 8000 yen collector stuff like the macross movie dvd remaser box just to get the storyboard, shit I got the cyber city oedo novels practically brand new and havent got to pay shit past shipping, Its just crazy, Im totally ready to pay customs for the MG Mk V though , aparently the shipping box is huge or something and I have to send It through fedex.

If it's Parcelforce (they seem to handle it if it's above a certain price/size), that £8 charge becomes £12. Don't count on Japanese sellers marking things as gifts and don't ask them to. You don’t use basic putty for filling hollow parts. Use epoxy or polyester putty, or just cut 0.5mm pla plate.

Id say the sheer ammount of stuff that comes in the box is crazy for the size it is. Hes great, full loadout of all kinds of stuff, but because of that->>9088266 you need him on a stand. But really though, he looks better in a flight pose. Check out a review, its a really cool kit

>>9088612
lol what awful issues does the RG have?
>>
>>9088674
generally ugly detail, don't know what they were smoking when they thought up the shoulders and legs, has a very ugly neck and the faceplate is awful and only looks good from the sides.
I really like the proportions and it's a very sturdy kit so later down the line I want to fix mine up.
>>
>>9088691
Thinking that a plastic robot has ugly parts isn't an "issue" let alone an awful one.
>>
>>9088705
that's kinda what I'm saying, it just needs some work and love.
>>
>>9088707
I'm not nearly as picky about MS appearances as other people. When someone says a kit I'm looking forward to has issues I start freaking out that there's some fucked up engineering or bad qc.
>>
>>9088707
i think the point is that looks are subjective. some people like the look of broken up panels, some people dont.
when someone points out issues on a kit, it makes more sense to point out stuff like fragile limbs.

absolutely, I do like insane part separation to some degree too.
guess I'm the sort of person who always manages to find something I don't like about a kit for better or worse since I can change it up if I want to.
fuck I'm actually tempted to get the HGUC and replace the head and shoulders with that but the RG has very skinny proportions so I'm not sure if that'd work out.

Does anyone here use an airbrush setup in a smaller living space who can tell me how messy that is? I've been thinking about airbrushing for months now and I'd have to do it in my shoebox room with the windows open and tarps down everywhere. Without a vent, can I focus the paint blasts so it doesn't go completely everywhere like cans do? I don't think I'm ready to buy even a mid-range air brush, I'll take whatever airbrush comes with the compressor since I only plan on priming and base coats for now.

not really but paint is really messy without anywhere for the paint to go, it'll just keep building layers upon layers around the area you work at so I'll recommend another solution for you instead.
go to the used market in your area and try to find a powerful fan and hook it up to some air ducting like pic related, will catch most of the paint particles and is compact enough to put away in your little shoebox room.
>>
>>9088346
They're a bit pricey and the first couple had really shitty polycaps that would tear and break easily but they fixed the mix they were using for them and they're better now. Also don't expect them to actually transform. Otherwise they're really nice in terms of surface detail and have good articulation for a non-bandai kit.

And wait for the 40% sale on model kits if your at hobby lobby. They have it like once a month.

Are you the anon talking about the kit being back heavy, or the mushy joints? Well the backheavy factor, for me at least was fixed with a stand. I actually cant see it standing without falling over, so yea I see your point. Id say it looks best in a aerial pose IMO. But yea the arms in particular are pretty soggy. Especially if you have it holding the sword up its gonna droop, I had to tighten it a few times with paint. Currently a lil bit of blue-tac in the armpit is doing the job.
>>
>>9089275
Yeah I'm the one who mentioned the QanT. Honestly I already have an unbuilt Raiser but the fact that the QanT has such disappointing joints makes me leery of even building the Raiser or Exia.
I should try learning methods for tightening them but I already used cement on everything and hate disassembly so there might be some joints in the prebuilt frame I just can't fix.

>>
>>9089325
Fair enough. The only real issue I have with loose limbs is the arm holding the sword. Its pointing straight out with the big ass sword weighing it down. It took awhile, but yea it did eventually droop. Which really isnt a suprise. Like i said eariler though, a tactically put piece of out of sight blue-tac has seemed to fix the issue. Aside from that though its so jam packed full of other things its impressive just to see how much they could slap on the kit. Other then the semi-limp arm its great, and hey you allready own it

Did my first gunpla ever, first model kits full stop actually.

Pretty good fun on the whole, but the crossbones did almost drive me insane trying to get the little eyepatch piece in properly, and some of the tiny stickers pinged all over the place.

I couldn't get the main chest sticker to look anything but shit because of the dome of the chest, I've seen waterslide decals around, would that look better?

The Leo looks a lot shitter because the green plastic seems a lot less forgiving for stress marks, I did try sanding down (400>800>1500>2000>2500>fingernail buffer) but I guess I didn't sand for long enough each time, because it just ended up looking worse. I've got a full weapon set leo coming so I guess I can try again on that one.
>>
>>9091416
>I've seen waterslide decals around, would that look better?
yes.
>>
>>9091416
Dark colored plastic in overall is really bad with discolouration so you're not alone
>>
>>9091416
Waterslides will always, always look better. Much better, since your new and allready know about em you should grab a few. Also, best way to wrap up a build is using some topcoat, it adds a layer that looks day and night better after. Now im not trying to tell you what to do, but if you build more those two things will come naturally.
>>
>>9090742
Thank you.

I had the same issue with my Zero, but I've yet to see anyone come up with a good solution. The precision of the ball and socket joint is pretty bad; the ball doesn't go deep enough into the socket so as to function like an actual joint. Extra layers of paint and topcoat also don't help to tighten the joint. I ended up having to glue the joints and position the feet in a fixed pose.
>>
>>9090742
>>9091559
I wonder if this varies from kit to kit, because mine doesn't have that issue.
>>
>>9091513
I don't know if I'll do more, it was good fun but I don't have a dedicated area to do it in and I've already only got too many toys to display so I have to rotate. Could be a problem if I get addicted, and if I do 1/100 kits too. I would like to get a tallgeese and a nu gundam too, so maybe I will get some topcoat and some of those markers, but I do feel a bit silly doing that since I decided to try gunpla because I thought I'd need basically no equipment.

Well the hobby is all about what you want to get out of it. Nobody's going to force you to use topcoats and waterslides, although occasionally we get a bored troll that shitposts about it. Some people are chill and just build and call it a day, others want to go all the way and spend weeks/months detailing and perfecting a custom model.
Personally I get the most relaxation and satisfaction out of simply removing nubs and panel lining. I would try waterslides but they can scratch off way too easily without a topcoat and spray painting/topcoating in my climate sucks lol.
>>
>>9090934
>I see a lot of resin builders using this
See where?

You don't actually need fancy multi-primers for resin if you degrease it properly. Tamiya Liquid Primer and Mr Primer Surfacer1000 work as well as anything else.

Multi-primers should really be reserved for sofubi, PP/PE and other weird plastics that normal paint doesn't stick to.
>>
>>9091752
>Multi-primers should really be reserved for sofubi, PP/PE and other weird plastics that normal paint doesn't stick to.
yeah that exactly and it'd be nice to have transparent primer for misc/weird things.

I always trigger that troll.
But what this anon says is pretty spot on. Panel lining makes a kit look alot better. Topcoat helps to even the look out. Painting in little details can be a bitch but ultimately rewarding when everything comes together. There is no need to fully paint a kit but they sure do look better the more work you put into it.

Here is my latest build. Humidity has been lowering here lately so probably wait for a nice dry day to slap some stickers and top coat.

>>9092104
I like the guntank, I know in canon he's not very good, but I like to think he just out guns any other suit when posing them. For wargaming, I gave him perks of not able to cripple his movements, knockbacks do nothing, and the guns are strong, but all that balanced with slow movement / aiming speed.
>>
>>9092215
Of course, immediately after taking this image, I accidentally punched the shelf, obliterating the zeons and guntank, because I was playing Gorn in vr. Luckily it only disassembled their ball joints, so it took like 20 seconds to pop them all back together and pose them again.

Its getting what seems to be a tie-in short OVA series as well (I think it said it will be 6 episodes starting this summer). Which I assume is where a number of these kits will be appearing in addition to the new game.
>>
>>9096215
i tried using it once, just with white though since its what i had at the time.
i dont recommend it because it sprays on super thick. even when trying to mindful on how youre spraying it. it ended up "filling" up some of the panel line details.
>>
Anyone have pics of the differences of color looks between black, grey, and white primers?
>>
The OP made me remember I wanted to make a non-SD Ninja Hyaku Shiki in the future.
What's the cheapest and best articulated 144 Hyaku Shiki? Preferably not chromed because I'll cry if I have to paint over it.
>>
>>9096535
HGUC Hyaku-Shiki its exactly like that, not chromed and with decent articulation
>>

These are the same, right? It looks really good.
By the way, there are no issues with gold metallic plastic, right? I have no experience with this particular color from Bandai but Hasbro is well-known for being brittle.
>>
>>9096556
Its not brittle but def has some issues, like dark spots where the runner connects and so, get a gold sharpie if you have any issues with them, it really matches the colour
>>
>>9096556
Oh and yeah its the same kit
>>
>>9096562
Ah, no, no. I'll be painting it dark blue but it sounds like the issue is the plastic darkening instead of brightening when cut improperly so there's no problem.
>>
>>9095915
Looks good in red
>>
>>9096553
Thanx! That's really helpful.

I bought the Flame Toys Windblade figure earlier. Would like to custom paint her when the time comes, but I don't have an air compressor or an airbrush (or a fume hood for said airbrushing). Was thinking of getting a sparkling red air can for the red on her, but wanted to figure which base coat primer I should go for.
>>
>>9096553
whats the point in primers? why does the color of primer matter if the top coat is a diff color?
>>
>>9097020
you'll have to rephrase that question because it makes no sense.
what people refer to as a topcoat is transparent paint, not a color.
>>
>>9097036
ohhh so its like a gloss on fingernails it just seals the primer so it looks good?
>>
>>9097047
uhhh I'm not really sure what you're asking.
a topcoat/finish is usually used as protection and to change the finish of the paint, primer is what binds to the plastic and then you put paint on top of that.
the color of the primer matters as shown in this picture >>9096553, dark primer makes brighter colors like yellow and red dull but is nicer for metallic paint.
>>
>>9097020

I'm assuming bright primers are bad for metallic paints?

Only to an extent. If your paint coverage is good, primer color hardly matters.

>but is nicer for metallic paint
Depends on the paint, the intended effect and the coverage.
You can get better looking metallic finish by spraying metallic paint over bare white plastic (pic related) than over black-primed plastic if bare plastic is smooth out of the box and doesn't need surface prep.
