what is this black nub marks? i can't seem to get rid of it no matter how much i sand
>>
>>8974483
That's a hole anon, not a nub mark, use putty, sand it and try to match paint
>>
>>8974483
There's a tendency for the plastic pigment to collect at the gate during injection molding, causing those dark marks on darker and metallic plastics. You can't get rid of it without gouging a hole in the plastic.
>>

>>8974486
nah not holes, they are from one of my 5 years old kit, i just open and build it today after long times, and every pieces has this dark nubmark
>>
>>8974483
That's the change in direction in the metallic flakes in the plastic due to the injection location.
>>
>>8974483
its metal flake injection, the flakes want to stay by the surface, since thats where the plastic was injected, the metallic flakes dont really stay there it seems, black plastic is its true color.

>>8974486
how could you be this wrong
>>
>>8974499
so like some kind of plastic degrades? and the only way to get rid of it is painting?
>>
>>8974502
>>8974503
what the hell is metallic flake injection? it mean low quality plastic or what?
>>
>>8974511
It means they use metallic flakes to give that colour, but of course since its not metal, just plastic the method used have that particular issue
>>
>>8974521
So its the manufacture fault? not the plastic?
>>
>>8974524
Yeah, its a factory problem, not only your kit
>>
>>8974511
The "flakes" are what make metallic materials that aren't metal shine. Little flat peices of material that reflect light. Due to the orientation of how they are injected, they are not reflecting light at the injection points (Think mirror, but from the side). Undergating can alleviate this to an extent but it's not worth the extra cost because injection molded metallics look shit 9/10 times and should just be painted anyways.
>>
>>8974504
>>8974511
It's due to the fluid dynamics during molding. Imagine the plastic parts being streams of liquid, then at the gates you'd have a stream exiting a narrow channel straight into a perpendicular wall. This causes pigments and metallic flakes to gather in front of the gate. You'll also see this happen in darker plastics, it's much more obvious on metallic ones because the flakes are larger and opaque.
>>
>>8974347
So let me get this straight, they really create false scarcity by not making more Pbandai models just to rev up the prices?

Whats the fucking point if scalpers are going to rape us by buying everything on stock and resell it at 200% revenue? Its not like they are seeing that money, it only benefits scalpers and resellers
>>

>>
>>8974744

>>

Most Pbandai sell like hotcakes, so I dont think that applies here
>>
>>8974483

probably gonna get shit for this but if it silver in color i usually just put a little dab of sharpie metallic silver on it blends in pretty well to not be noticeable

>>
>>8974483
does anyone actually like "metallic" plastic?
it looks like shit and it's awful to work with because you can barely see what you're doing without primer.
>>
>>8975517
yea it sucks, but keep in mind most people dont paint gunpla
>>
>>8975524
it's not even that, even for people who don't paint their plastic models it looks like shit and feels like shit ignoring the nub marks.
>>
Has anyone here bought gunpla with a titanium finish? I see some P-Bandai kits with titanium finish for sale, but its really hard to see a huge difference the coating makes, in the promotion pics the titanium finish basically looks like a gloss coat on the kit. To those who have bought a titantium kit, is that what it looks like in person or is the finish nicer? Was it worth the extra money?
>>
>>8975696
Short answer is you are not wrong in your assessment. It’s basically buying a kit you won’t have to paint
>>
How are third-party kits in quality compared to official stuff in terms of how solid the plastic is? P-bandai's not an option for me so I'm buying the Dragon Momoko Geminass 1, but it doesn't seem to have reviews.

>>8975696
No. It has an actual metallic sheen to it, kind of like a candy coat. Still not really worth it unless the kit is undergated, since the nubs are unfixable on Titanium Finish kits, but for what its worth, the finish does look nice.
>>
>>8975720
lol you didn't look very hard, did you? Prime92 has reviewed that exact kit (and also has many other bootleg/third party reviews up).

Enamel paints are supposed to be more resistant to damage than Acrylics. However, I know that you can't paint Enamel over Acrylic. I can't seem to find anyone that makes an Enamel Airbrush primer though. What can I use to prime my parts for use with Enamel paints?
>>
>>8975737
>can't paint enamel over acrylic
uh, no?
>>
>>8975861
I understood that you always needed to put a stronger paint over a weaker paint, so that Acrylic always needed to be your topmost paint and Lacquers would be on the bottom.

"Snapshitting" is the ideal way to build model kits. Painting and even panel-lining is typically only good for if you wanna pose your model on a shelf and forget about it, which is boring and cringe. "Snapshitting" is for real men who want a cool toy to fiddle with and swoosh around, none of that delicate detailwork bullshit.

Seriously though what do you guys think of the general shape so far? Nothing is fixed in place or un-doable yet, its just all held on by pressure and poster-tac. I'm shuffling some parts around to try and make an original looking gundam frame. No idea what colors to paint it yet.

So I've gone from just making the kits without most of the stickers to panel lining and putting on decals and now I want to transcend into top coating and painting the kits into customs. Any recommended guides or youtube channels for starting it.

I started by spray painting the pokemon kits, before buying an airbrush. My reccomendation is to pick up some sdcs kits, and learn techniques.

Even if you buy an airbrush, you still need to learn to hand paint, unless you want to mask everything for hours

Weathering triggers most people because 9 times out of 10 it's badly done. Good weathering involves extensive research, precision, and most of all, restraint. Saavy modelers will consider things like what parts will logically wear down first as the MS moves, and how large/visible the weathering should be given that these are massive suits. Since this is a difficult route full of hard work, barely anyone bothers to do it.

No, to most people, "weathering" means roll it in some dirt outside, drybrush way too much silver over it, add so much rust it looks like it was made of cheap iron alloy left in the rain for decades, use a lighter to burn/warp it, and absolutely brutalize it at random with xactos and soldering irons. The idea seems to be "well, war is hell, so I should give the kit hell myself, right?" This is almost always hideous, and drives some people nuts when they see it.

Nope.

Proper weathering seamlessly blends into the kit. Pic related.

Not him, but I wouldn't call that seamless.
>Pristine metal on the shield next to weathering on top
>No chipping on the body near the inside of the shoulders where there'd be the most rubbing
>moving elbow joints are untouched.
>White surrounding exhaust on chest is pristine save for some nonsensical chipping, and chest vulcans show no sign of use.

Cross posting from >>8977858 but you guys might wanna take a look at Final Faction from Dollar Tree.

A super cheap figure series, (literally only $1 each) that has weapon packs that are great for kit bashing. The scale of the weapons will fit most 6 inch gunpla hands with minimal modifying. Other weapon packs include jet packs and wings and just, stuff.

Dear lord do you have research to do. I could answer this, but you're at a level where that probably wouldn't be the best for you. Google some painting videos and start there, but this contains answers to a lot of your questions. https://finescale.com/how-to/articles/2014/02/build-great-scale-models-part-4
>>
>>8981175
B-b-b-b-but since i'm living in a small apartment, i'm not gonna paint anyway, only prime and top coat, do i need to primer then top coat or top coat then primer?
>>
>>8981180
Watch some videos. If you can use rattle cans for primer or topcoat then you can paint, and the questions you're asking don't seem to indicate that you know what the stuff you're asking about even is so you don't know why you're doing what you're asking how to do.
>>
>>8981152
If you can top coat, you should probably just actually paint your kits. I only top coat stuff, if I don't have the time to paint it, and most people can tell.

Tamiya has pretty much made it a half day job to paint any kit that isn't char pink. Every gundam is paintable via tamiya. The only things that aren't are really rare colors like dijeh teal
>>
>>8981221
Nevermind, they have coral blue. Dijeh is paintable

I like to leave my gundam completely free of any decals or pannel lining, because I prefer the toy look, but it drives people absolutely batty. I enjoy the building and posing more than anything else. I came to gunpla after lego got too expensive to continue collecting. I think some people will find irony, or insult that gunpla is cheaper than lego now. I like to zone out to a pod cast or music and build things. I don't really care what it is, but I like to stick to a theme or brand so it looks cohesive on my shelves, and gundam is fun, because its easy, and kinda relaxing. To those who swear by perfect grades or whatever, tedium is not difficulty. Patience shouldn't be a skill to measure by.
>>
>>8986528
I get you. I kinda wanna go back to that to be honest. Gunpla has gone from being something fun and enjoyable to a kind of stressful grind that feels like work lately. I can't even really enjoy just putting together and posing something on the same day because I know the process and don't wanna have a disassemble later. Trim, paint, topcoat, panel line, decal, topcoat, then finally assemble. Sometimes even thinking about it just makes me tired, and that's not what a good hobby should do.
>>
>>8986542
Your hobby shouldn't be a job.
>>
>>8986542
>not enjoying the end result of a long and satisfying build
sounds like you might be in the wrong hobby, if assembly is what you enjoy the most, lego sets or even simple blocks may be more up your alley
>>
>>8986528
I'm pretty new to this all. Grew up with lego stuff, especially Bionicle and with that dead in the water for the second time and a few years running, I had to move on. Gunpla has served the same niche, putting together some cool looking dude while listening to music or a video or something, then admiring how it looks all put together, posing them, and putting them up on my shelf.
I'd love start kitbashing things later and making custom mobilesuits once I get more space for a better work area, as all I have is my computer desk and I don't want to start painting shit here. That'll be fun, but I don't doubt that even when I start spending more time and money on things I'll still enjoy buying a cheap HG of a design I like, snapping it together as is and posing it up with the others.

I'm pretty sure it's just the usual troop of /m/ shitposters that are giving this thread a turn with their usual shitposting bait
>Dude fuck snapshitted kits
>Dude fuck weathering
>Dude fuck mecha musume kits (see last thread)
>Dude wojaks this is you, you're the funny meme! Cope! Seethe!
The only thing missing is some poorly painted build lifted from Reddit and you'd have a Royal Flush
>>
>>8986900

Try building slower. I do things less efficiently on purpose now, usually working on two or three small things at once so I don't burn myself out in the limited time I have. For instance, I've just finished painting my Amatsu Mina's left leg so tonight I'm going to assemble it and maybe apply decals, and I've got a bunny-shaped radar dish for my Baselard I might put together. And that's all I have planned. Enough to feel like I've accomplished something without feeling any pressure to complete the kits.

I suspect the fliptard that shitpost on the shinki thread, since non-shinki posts are now banned, the only thing the flip can remotely post is gundam, since gundam is popular in flipland

they have bpo companies in flipland where they hire people to shitpost/shill in forums/imageboards/comments/mass like youtube

I wouldn't discount the idea that he can change the way he writes or the style of writing isn't his.

The only one of those that's actually relevant to the /toy/ gunpla threads is whiteagle since he actually posted on /toy/ (Although last I checked he fucked off to /tfg/). Fllay, Snapfit-kun & Airbrush-kun are/were /m/ tripfags, and I'm not sure who nikex is.

yeah gun itself is really nice but the rest of it looks like this, feeling more comfortable just scratchbuilding something myself than dealing with it.
also I bought it a while ago and I assume it's just a bad mold or something dunno, it looked nice and sharp in the pictures goddammit.

looks like a shitty recast, better whip out your putty and knife. Or just scratch build it.

Nah, this is nothing a half an hour with a good chisel won't fix. Warping would've been more troublesome.

This is what happens when lazy fags use shitty cheap silicone for their molds and then fail to replace it when it starts to break down.

I prefer to use nippers on my polycaps. Why does this trigger "hard core" builders?
>>
>>8987662
It's honestly fine. Just not much reason to clean them up beyond the autism of knowing they're cleaned up as 9/10 out of 10 the polycaps are completely hidden.
I twist them out.
>>
>>8987662
You can even take it with your bare hands or nails, why would anyone bother if its hidden?

If anything most of the times it helps to get the joint more tight
>>
>>8974347
I like Gundam Wing sets, fuck you for trying to shame me for liking the series and double fuck you for trying to mock me for my tastes in Gundams
>>
>>8987662
everyone knows cutting polycaps with nippers produces mustard gas
>>
are godhand nippers or just expensive nippers in general(like $30+) pointless if im planning on painting?
just about every review on expensive nippers mainly highlight that it reduces the amount of stress marks on parts.
seems pretty pointless if im just going to end up priming and painting over everything.
>>
>>8987869
They mostly save time.
>>
>>8987869
It still reduces amount of sanding needed on flat parts. Will improve your workflow a noticeable amount.
>>
>>8987869
they're a god send when dealing with tiny ass parts on traditional models.
>>
>>8987888
This

You will def fuck up a pilots cabin with regular pliers or just a dull hobby knife
>>
>>8987662
how else do you trim them?
>>
>>8987869
It's a slight but good improvement and is physically more satisfying because it "cuts" rather than "clips". You still need to sand of course, but knives gouge too easily. I do a lot of straight builds though so having less stress marks definitely helps a lot in my case.

What do you think is the ratio of people who build gundam that have never watched any of the animes, or have no interest in the back story to the figures?
>>
>>8987994
In these threads like 3 out of 10
>>
>>8987994
what category do i fall in? i watched gundam seed back then on toonami, couldnt get into it but i liked the gundam designs.
years later i tried giving the series another chance, still couldnt get into it.

On /toy/ thread, i'd say about 33%. /m/ thread about 10%. Just guessing anyway.

>>8987994
Probably more people on /toy/ than /m/ that have less interest in the source material, but that's probably why these threads are comfier. Less tantrums about how other people build their kits since everyone's just here to enjoy the hobby.
That said my model choices and enjoyment comes entirely from suits and series I care about in the actual source material.

See, thats interesting. I have basically zero understanding of the gundam back story / lore, other than the green ones are bad guys, and hyper realistic depictions of military stuff. I just like building them. I am excited to see the live action gundam movie that was announced. Apparently ready player one was actually used as an animation test to see if a realistic looking gundam could be animated.

I liked everything around the 0080 era through Wing (with the exception of G, which was just a little too goofy for me) but my interest started waning after that. I loved and cared about suits like the Kampfer, but with the more modern stuff I'm hard pressed to give half a fuck regarding the backstory of the suits I really like, such and the Barbatos Rex.
>>
>>8987662
Some of them are just a bitch to twist off. Like the ones that usually end up as PC-8 on HGUC kits, the flat rectangular one with the hollow middle that's usually used for knee joint connections. Those things are stubborn.

I know a couple of people who've never watched them in my local hobby shop. Though most have watched at least one or two series.

That said, I think I've watched Gundam Seed as a kid a few times but never really had any interest. Me building Gundams is mostly just for practice purposes.
