Is the horned skull on the axe chaos marine specific?
>>
>>8540183
I imagine you could say it's an exorcist marine's
>>
>>8540183
It pretty much is, but that doesn't stop you from creating your own chapter and reasons for why they have them.

It'd be heresy, but fun heresy!
>>
What's everyone working on or planning to work on? I got my eyes set on carchadrons
>>
>>8540370
I'm thinking of making some Justicars of Dorn, or maybe Iron Warlords. Do you guys think citadel dry is ok to use? I have some available that's the perfect color.
>>
So I had the idea of making my AP Intercessor into something reminiscent of a custom little squad a friend and I wrote in a story awhile back. The long and short of it is that they're heavily themed into the gods of Egypt, with mine having thematic ties to Anubis.
I was doing some digging and came across this, it's a custom head made for Dominus Class Knights for the tabletop game. Do you guys think some futzing could make it fit onto the Intercessor or am I better off leaving it as is. I noticed a gentleman in previous threads making customs but sadly I lack both the knowledge and 3D printing materials in order to try and "bootleg" one of these heads into something compatible for the Intercessor.
>>
>>8540518
You'd have to create a hole in this head big enough to accommodate the neck without it looking weird. I don't think there's enough material for the hole if my guess is right. It also a lot of work to do.
You'd either end up with an oversized head or a head floating just on top the neck.
>>
I know jack about Warhammer but I want to army build this guy for the meme of it yet I can't find him anywhere only the ugly version of him with the red helmet. Whats up with that?
>>
>>8540548
It was a prototype that hasn't been produced yet. We're all pretty much waiting for a regular marine for army building, but all we're getting right now are higher ranks and special units, outside of the artist proofs.
>>
>>8540559
I see, gives me time to save up for a shitload of them then. Thanks anon, you keep thinning those paints or whatever Warhammer people do all day.
>>
>>8540537
My initial thoughts were to see if I could accommodate the Anubis head and put it "over" the helmet of the marine, sort of like a mask, but it might take some greenstuff wizardry to make it look not shit.
>>
>>8540370
Getting the rest of my paints tommorow or Tuesday, and plan on painting up my White Scar which I'm really excited to do.

Is Chaos anon still here? If you are, does the backpack you printed for pic related fit well on the McFarlane marine and can we get the STL for it?
>>
>>8541235
Yes it does, but it sticks out quite a bit bbecause the connection part for the backpack is quite longer compared to the Bandai one. You can cut that though.

I was gonna paint my Marines into Imperial Fists. I'm not working on it at the moment but I was planning on turning my Ultramarine into Cato Sicarius, but gonna need a 3d printer or have someone make some parts for me before I can do that. I also want to make Kharn but again need a printer or somone to make parts for that.

My current little project is finding decent options for unhelmeted heads. I've got about 3 at the moment.

I'm savin' all my cash for the Bandai Dorn boy (yeah, I'm that faggot). But I'm getting a huge kick seeing what you guys can do to the MacFarlane Marines. Keep it up, anons!

>>
Is there anyway to get the McFarlane figures without getting rapped by scalpers?
>>
>>8541748
Just wait until they're locally available. With Walmart carrying exclusives they'll get some more in store and online, Amazon probably will too. In Canada they're showing up at TRU and EB (at a big $10 markup though so don't buy it from there), and they'll surely be back on Amazon soon enough.
>>
>>8541748
aren't they available on amazon for 20 bucks?
https://www.amazon.com/McFarlane-Toys-War-Hammer-Figures/dp/B081HVKLLV
>>
>>8541753
>>8541757
Thanks. Last time I checked Amazon I could only find them for thirty bucks.
>>
Newfag here, never done any painting before. Do I have to cover the figure with varnish or something to protect the paint? What do you guys recommend?
>>
>>8541917
im not exactly experienced here but what you need to do is coat the figure with primer BEFORE you paint it, no varnish required afterward
>>
>>8541958
Okay, thanks!
>>
>>8541753
Their sold out in Canada atm on Amazon. TRU has em for 24,99 but they sold out pretty quick was supposed to get a restock last week but don't know what happened there. But yeah stay away from EB.
>>
>>8542049
anon, for best results, dissasemble in boiled water poured off into a bowl, then use dish soap to wash each bit. this gets the mould release off, so your primer can stick.
you should topcoat when you finish painting, otherwise your paint can come off if it scrapes at the joints.
>>
So have we gotten any more info on the Hellblaster or is it still just SOON
>>
>>8542419

It's the wave after the sister of battle. Probably gonna be a few months. no pre-orders yet even.
>>
Does anyone know how interchangeable the hands are on the mcfarlane space marine figs? Are the joints ok with that or will they become stressed if you swap them out too much?
>>
>>8542572
The plastic on the hands are somewhat soft and the wrist joints are fat, hard and durable fucking things.
They pop off just fine, if not with a little bit of force. Heat it up if it's a bit stubborn.
>>
>>8541917
A topcoat will usually help to protect the paint, but with an action figure like this you're bound to have some paint scraping off in areas at some point no matter what.
>>
Hatmaker, could you tell me how you get these perfect holes and even the little adapters for the joints?
I can only hollow and cut holes in chitubox, but thats it.
>>
>>8540548
The Red helmet variant is a marking of a Sergeant rank.
>>
>>8542745
You need to use a program like Meshmixer..Its a free program and very user freindly.Chitubox can put hole and size models but its not the best for that..
>>
>>8543117
I already use meshmixer for cutting up models, but thats it.
Gotta try find a tut I guess
>>
God my McFarlane Necron and Assault Sgt. in.

Verdict: very good. The Marine is excellent for the price! I love my Bandai Marine more - more possible, different hands, just more expressive. But at 1/5 the price I am quite pleased with this one as well.

The Necron is also great. Again, for $20 I am very happy with these. Excellent sculpts, very poseable.

Very happy.

Do we know how tall the Sister of Battle is compared to the other figures?

While I was initially optimistic about this line, the Necron and the Primaris being the same size and seeing Mcfarlane's "more chocolate" argument memed in the DC thread as why he made superman and harley quinn the same height makes me think this might be a monkey paw series in disguise.

When Mcfarlane says it's a 7-inch line, I know what I think that means, but what does _he_ think that means, Option A, or Option B?

>Wraithlord and Grot for familiar but extreme size scale examples, not wishlisting
>Tyranids omitted because there is no way in hell GW will let a toy hormagaunt out into the market of conversion-capable fans for 20 bucks when a scythed hierodule costs about 300 bucks and would be smaller, requires hours of work before painting, and is un-articulated.
>Honestly, we'll never get a toy wraithlord or wraithguard for the same reason because of the 150ish dollar wraithknight.
>>
>>8543923
I think closer to A than B. About a week ago Todd showed off a bunch of stuff including a Damian Wayne scaled properly so he was exactly the size Samian should be next to Bruce and everyone else and Bane who was based on a fuck huge version of him, Larger than the Devestator figure that they just put out so I think the 40k stuff will have a decent scale. If I'm being honest I kind of hope they don't do Imperial Guard ONLY because I think Guardsmen are the only ones whose scale will get fucked, only because they are like the only normal sized people in 40k. What I'd rather see is someone making like Cadian gear for like the Classified Series Joes or something, because Duke and Beach Head are a good size next to the Astartes.
>>
>>8543878

>>

331 KB JPG
>>8543974
i think the scale is completely fucked with warhammer 40k, because https://i.4cdn.org/toy/1604465201291.jpg

its pretty hard to make a toyline centered around 9 foot tall super soldiers and have them in a $20 price range, while keeping scalefags happy.
they'll gonna end up cheating the same way GWS does, because stores aren't always open to lower priced stuff, especially if it's a niche line like 40k is.

>>
>>8544666
disassemble the figure by putting a limb in boiling water and then gently tugging. then shave off the mould lines, rinse each part in soapy water, then prime it, paint like a knight or rhino. then, you need to TOP COAT THAT FUCKER. if you dont topcoat, your paint can scuff off when you move the figure.

Hey Marine Maker, do you mind if I make a suggestion about your work? I think you should (if you can) add a trigger guard to the guns. Rounding off the handle could be useful but that's someone anyone can do with some sandpaper and a little time so its not as big a deal.

Yes there is a lot of good stuff on Instagram. I liked that guys stuff but I'm taking a break from posting myself there.

I'm new and this is probably a -really- annoying question but...
Are Vallejo paints good? Or should I got with the citadel ones? I was going to possibly try to get some T'au or Necrons to see if I like 'em.
>>
>>8557572
I would like to second this anon's question but specifically about primer. I can probably find Citadel primer with some effort, but obviously more general use stuff from places like Walmart and hardware stores is easier to come by.
Is it just worth it to get Citadel primer in terms of quality? I'd rather not buy stuff from the hardware store, find out it sucks, then go buy the Citadel primer afterward.
>>
since sister of battle are coming to the stores, someone has made some 3d models of accesories for theme?
like some spacewolf shoulders or slaanesh breastplace?
>>
>>8544090
That image is incredibly misleading.
1. That's not a GW model
2. They're all on some custom base, so the heights are hard to actually gauge.
3. Something's weird with that model's legs. I don't recall any DW character with proportions like that. Possibly a bad attempt at 'true scaling'
4. That last one is a Terminator, which is supposed to be taller anyway.

The artist proofs are already primed, I think. Acrylic model paint is fairly resistant to wear, but you could give the fig a light spray with a matt varnish when finished.
>>
>>8558661
My bad, they're not primed. Don't buy overpriced spray paint from GW. Any cheap spray primer from a hardware store will work just as well. Grey generally works best, but go with white if you want a white/yellow paint scheme.
>>
>>8557572
>>8557620
Vallejo paints are even better than GW paints.
Citadel sprays are okay, but horrendously overpriced. If you find a colour you love, by all means get it, but basic grey primer really does work just as well.
>>
>>8558678
Perfect, thank you very much.
>>
>>8558326
Sounds about right me and you are in the same boat. McFarlane pretty much told us to fuck off.
>>

in terms of strength sticking to the model, Vallejo are easily the weakest of all the acryllic model paints and Acryllics are already the weakest of the model paint types, so not sure what >>8558661 means by 'fairly resistant' as they come right off if you look at them without primer and topcoat. so even being the weakest of an already weak type of paint is not a huge negative overall really.

however, their strengths that made them always reccommended by gunpla groups over citadels was not their resistance but the fact they are the absolutely most beginner friendly for hand brushing of any brand with maybe citadel coming in second. and the biggest reason being the ABSURDLY cheap price point.

however since Primer is NOT paint I will agree, NEVER buy citadel primers. i have yet to encounter major differences between the modeling primer brands, so buy the cheapest one it wont hurt. what can hurt is hardware store primers, sometimes they produce a much rougher texture on the model. Not to mention so many of these 'primers' are now 'half n half' paint and primer combos.

I think I messed up. My first time painting a figure from the ground up.
I started by popping the figure apart, sanding down some mold seams and trimming off flash. Then I primed it with Mr. Surface Primer and waited about 2 hours. Then did a pass of Mr. Base White 1000.
I’d assume that I need to do another pass of white to even it out, but now that the first coat is dried, I’m really skeptical about doing any more, since it really looks like something that’ll chip right off once I try to put the figure back together (even after topcoat).

Should I keep going, or strip it down to start over with different primer and white base coat? I haven’t done any of the parts not pictured yet.

Bulldog Adhesion promoter and Duplicolor Adhesion promoter is superior to any other primer for plastics that I've come across so far. Both are clear primers, no color at all. Bulldog creates a thicker shiny coat which helps stick any paint, and I mean any paint, even the crappiest paint. Duplicolor leaves a matte coat and it's super thin, almost like a prep for that surface and works extremely well with Testors and Citadel, spray lacquer too, but not crappy paints like apple barrel.

You should let paints and primers CURE before going to next step. So should have let the primer sit a day before moving onto paints. And likewise let paints cure before the top coats

Remember to test the product on areas that won't be visible. Especially stuff like this that is meant for automotive work, never know if that anon might be trying to get ya to ruin stuff.

I will say though, that the product claims to be a massive multipurpose use in automotives including vinyl so it is probably more likely to be safe for plamo then many automotive paint products. But never can be sure until you test.

Stuff like that that has a lip isn't that hard, to do the edge you just get a flat shader brush and turn it on its side and it pretty much does the work for you. Now, what requires real precision hand control is painting the inside edge of that trim.

Those are good for big flat surfaces that won't be painted to adhere to, not as easy to attach to something like the pauldrons where the only anchor point surface is too hard to reach for a cork.

One trick in gunpla when in need of clips was running a sprue over a flame and quickly smooshing the melted end onto the part, it snaps off without leaving a mark when you are done. Unfortunately this is not feasible for action figures without sprues.

this is why people attach the pins to the mini first and then put on the cork.

you can do the same with alligator clips or the toothpick mentioned earlier.

ToyMarineMaker@gmail.com here, yeah email me if you are interested in something and I will see when I can send something your way! As noted, email me for details and those items are sent with the understanding you are going to make a donation to a worthy cause.

I did drop a few items on ebay to gauge interest recently too. I am only selling a portion of the items that way, ones that allow for selling or ones I modeled myself. The ebay stuff is also pre-primed via airbrush if you want to jump right into painting. No clue on legality otherwise. I do see some WAY overpriced (in my opinion) items also showing up on other sites too but then again, warhammer has never been cheap.

I'm glad to see some cool works in progress and more painted stuff out there!

you can pop off pretty much any jointed part from a McFarlane figure because they're just barbell joints. Ball joints on two ends, so they're pretty easy to take off.

The plastic is very sturdy, so you shouldn't be afraid of breaking anything. Just watch out for longer posts like the shoulders, because those joints go pretty deep into the shoulders.

>>
>>8593749
>>8593840
Looks mostly painted to me. Whoever did this clearly has talent, but they went overboard on the weathering in my opinion. Yeah, I know armor like this would probably get fucked up real bad in battle, but your job as an artist is to design the damage in a way that is both visually appealing AND does not distract from the design itself. It's the same criticism leveled at people who cut and burn Gunpla because "that could really have happened in the field!"

The helmet on the Dark Angel is really nice though, I will say that.
>>
>>8593858
Personally I see the issue being that whoever painted these painted them in the exact same way as the models which doesn't work on bigger figures. They went and added to many different shades which is done on minis to indicate stuff like light pulling out and shadowing detail. And all the edge detail pulling out the edges of the armor. Works on the minis because it draws attention to the seams and edges of the armor which you wouldn't be able to see on the minis due to their size. You can see detail much easier the bigger the model/figure/statue etc is. As for the battle damage I think it would have been easier to just create the scratches with an xacto knife instead of painting them but I could be wrong on that working. I've been looking up how to add battle damage on Minis and gundams and stuff so I can add some damage to my marines when I finally get off my ass and paint them.
>>
>>8592602
Went overboard with the paint. Less is more.
>>
>>8593890

A sneak peek of what's next is missile launcher, big plasma gun, combat knife, and shotgun. I'm getting better at the 3D modeling and I am working on prototypes of all those in parallel so I can try to get those done soon.

New stuff is on going to land on ebay under the auction "Warhammer 40k McFarlane Space Marine Choose Your Custom Gear Lot Action Figures" of which some goes to charity and the rest is to help pay for resin and eventually a faster printer.
