Anyhow, its not a new idea really to the model painter. Spray it black all over. Spray it white from an angle. Then use thinned paint over it so it keeps the light and shade from underneath. Takes several thin coats, the trick is knowing when to stop. Stay within the lines. That is about it.

The only tip I have is that when I've done it the layering makes everything super gloss, but just hit it with a coat of flat at the end.

If you want good all-around paints, go for AK 3rd Gen. They do well with both brush and airbrush and have the most consistency across the range meaning they all cover fairly well, they all have the same viscosity, same matte finish etc. Before someone spergs out - yes there are paints out there that are better in one category or another. But I've yet to see a range with this level of consistency between all paints.
As for how to paint figures easy, do a zenithal as other anon explained - black or other very dark base coat - white or other very light coat from above - brush in the base tones - glaze/layer up the bright spots. And you're pretty much done.

Well, got this kit for under $15 today and I want to try my hand at doing a car kit properly. Sure it's a stripped out racer with no clear glass parts or a real interior but for starting fresh I think it's a good initial practice model. It's certainly good practice with sanding and filling. I need to get better sanding sticks that can reach odd angles, the markings on the underside of the roof (which I filled in only for practice since they won't be visible from virtually any angle on the finished model) were a real pain to get at.

The kit itself so far hasn't been too bad, mainly just removing mold lines and flash. The exhaust pipes have so far been the worst part, very poor fit and a giant gap running down the large pipe lengthwise that required a lot of filler. I got some sub-assemblies put together last night and everything has gotten a coat of primer, so after work I'm going to put down the base coats and see how things shape up, as right now it's looking like the majority of the underframe is going to be a lot of black/gray (gunmetal frame, black rollbars, aluminum floorplate/firewall, and chrome engine/exhaust with red detail headers)

The camo looks like an ogre vomited and shat diarrhea from the skies. Speckling is not a good way to ersatz mottling.
The chipping is done in a rather senseless manner. You have a cloud of chips that put jap planes to shame seemingly drip down from the cockpit.
The decals could use a little more of a beating. See how the cross basically covers up everything under it?
Also is it just gloss light tricks or has the yellow paint seeped in a lot of corners it has no business seeping in?

Colours worked out nicely, the pattern... ok-ish. The unevenness in the tan field on the side of the superstructure is (from touching up the air brushing with a paint brush) more texture than actual colour so it should drown in the weathering.

Test fit of parts on the Wild One. Its been a pretty pleasant build and beyond realizing the battery was not a control panel like on modern cars and will need a quick repaint, nothings been a real issue. Should get it wrapped up tomorrow or Tuesday.

Its one saving grace is that it will work on ABS plastic. This is an infrequent use case, but if you wind up with some stuff from Rubicon and your usual glue won't do the job, that one will.

Little tip on how to make chains for stuff like smoke launcher caps or machine guns:

Have experience with the molded cables from Zvezda's T-62, and for them being plastic pieces, they were fairly cooperative, wen tin heir places nicely and did not snap in three at the slightest maneuvering.

I once saw a diorama of a winter King Tiger that (by the builder's story for the scene) got a cold engine sitting outdoors overnight, so it couldn't be inertia-started with the hand-crack ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROnb5ouBjNc ), so they had a Kübelwagen with a starter shaft attached to it.

I don't know if the 223 has this sort of arrangement in either direction, but maybe you should look it up.

this one actually has quite the detailed chassis, but it's hobbyboss not miniart so the plastic isn't nearly as soft and the fits a little looser. Maybeeee I'll try a little vignette, I have a chipped up fence I never used that would look good next to a russian dirt road

Build a wheeled military vehicle if you don't want to kill yourself for your first model. You will fuck the plane up. An AFV you can paint once assembled and it's pretty easy. For a plane to not look like utter trash you need to
1) Paint before assembly
2) Learn to do decals very well
3) Learn to do clear parts well
4) Probably do a lot of masking
And possibly something else. Just do a jeep or kübelwagen or something.

1/72 is a fine place to start, pick up cheap Tamiya kits. Bang them out. Get practice in.
Airbrush is near essential for high quality finishes, but you don't need to buy it before doing your first kit or two. If you use Tamiya paints (X/XF range) with mr color levelling thinner, all of that can be used in an airbrush down the line. You can also decant spray paints to use with an airbrush.
Basically get on with a few kits, see how you like the hobby before buying all the shit you'll inevitably convince yourself you need.

Yeah, the thing that has been putting me off of the hobby for a while, was not knowing how steep the price of entry really is. Buy the colours that the kit specifies. Make a spreadsheet of the colours you have. Next kit you do, check if you have all the colours, if not buy the missing ones. Before long you'll amass all you need. There is little to no crossover between military stuff and cars in terms of paints.
You're unlikely to want to run the risk of "ruining" your first model or two by applying weathering once you've put the time in to get it assembled nicely, painted, etc.
1/72 Tamiya is generally the best price/value ratio you'll find. Doing other manufacturers such as Academy may appear super cheap (on some kits) but they'll require a lot of skills and patience you won't have as a beginner.
The price of entry can literally be a few paints, some thinners, a kit, some cement, a couple of nail files, and a pair of cutting pliers.
All that stuff isn't even needed once you start doing more advanced shit, it's your hobby, put as much or as little effort/time into it as you'd like. Pretty much all of us here have our hate builds that we just get through no matter how much they irritate us, some just get boxed and never touched again.
When it comes to airbrush, spend the money on something good (Iwata is great). Compressor doesn't matter; as long as it has a tank, and a moisture trap.
An airbrush compressor in terms of rattlecan cost is going to end up being maybe 20 or 30 cans. It's a big investment. You will, generally, achieve a much better finish with it. But you can absolutely master the art of rattle cans and achieve great finishes with those too.
Find out if you like the hobby first. Remember, Tamiya X/XF paints can be airbrushed and are generally very good quality. They're transferable, not all paints are, at least not as effortlessly.

One very quick bit of building later. Trumpy's 1/72 ZTZ-99A, and as is apparently the case overall with these recent-ish 1/72 Trumpeter kits parts count is very low. Bugger all detail on the inside of the tracks, but otherwise ok I guess. Overall decent fit if a bit tight at times, with one notable exception in that the "neck" of the turret extended too far into the hull where it hit the lower side walls. At least that one was easily fixed.
Going straight to this after the StuG also made quite a point out of how cyclopean modern tanks are.

Yes, two in the front and two in the rear. Also a pair of large ones in the middle of the hull, but they didn't engaged with the top part in any way, I guess they may be for some other vehicle using the same hull tub.
