So here are two things I've been working on lately.
An upgraded 77012 that conforms more with my sensibilities. After the mods I really have to say it's a very good set, especially for the price point. Gives you quite a bit in terms of play value and the vehicle builds are great (except for the fire damage to the plane which I chose to omit and the cannons mounted on top of the wings which I moved to the underside).

Minerfag back here, thinking of buying some stuff off bricklink, of course the singapore bohrok eyes are mainly a priority but stuff like star fish, a few weird parts and any that doesnt really have a limit to buying should also be a priority, Just need some advice on how to do so from bricklink since I havent bought online before, also as a sidenote, does anybody remember the guy making a custom knights faction who posted his shield and other stuff designs here? I am also surprised theres no spider knights (as in an actual faction of knights with a spider on the shield, not marvelslop) for anything, I feel like they would be a decent step for a villian from Wolf, Boar, Bull, Dragon, and Falcon, also since the lego spider is a pretty good shape it would fit, though castle isnt exactly my expertice, just an idea for anybody to take. Should just focus on the aliens and the miners instead
>>
>>10635181
I mainly should try to focus on doing more simplistic style builds or keeping to actual 2000's or 90's style building for my mocs, both for cost and for actually doing the style right instead of becoming overpieced blobs that try to emulate what a few bricks can do with a lot more than nessecary, also even maybe trying to have play features in a few but I am getting ahead of myself, point is I should focus on aesthethics and lower piece count/doing with what I have first and with lore and stuff second, may even need to maybe sketch some out before building them just to get a good shape or something, with the aliens stuff I can go more crazy since they use WAY more bizarre stuff and less regular system stuff (such as bionicle, animal parts, and other forms of eldritch connections to the point of even maybe using stuff like those big launchers as parts of a build by sliding a thin thing through them instead of a bullet to actually use them for connection points, but again, ahead of myself. Biggest challange is if I should keep the brown of the rock raiders in these builds or use a different color for stuff like roll cages or chains besides gray, just need some help here guys since this is one of the less shit lego communities online

Forgot picture, any advice for chains and stuff? because using lesser used elements or gimmicks (that I can afford) from across other themes could be good, since these guys are more gathering up scrap somewhat to make their vehicles and are building them on a case to case basis vs the more professional rock raiders or power miners, They have a lot of fire power but thats mostly from being pretty closely connected to blacktron for funders and a few members of the crew also being ex-blacktron since cheaper+stronger bond and experience including some of the rock raiders lasers (but modified) being used for example or other stuff, again I feel like the pieces obtained will be gotten to as I go further into this for helping establish the style but is stage one or two currently right now, hopefully everybody here understands

https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=2466&idColor=16#T=C&C=20 I feel like these are a somewhat important part, though getting them in regular clear, dark transpartent pink (aka chinese factory maybe), or something else may be tricky, if not settle for another more common window color, though then again the window color is another thing I have been having troubles with deciding since Magenta and Dark greens are a bit of a more dark pallet for space, so should the windows pop or go with the flow sorta? along with not adding too much color conflict/overflow due to the larger pallet, the troubles of color composition is a maddening one.

Despite what the Redditors who have only collected for 5 months and think they know everything claim, sustained pressure on the heel of a fig might crack it. Obviously Reddish Brown, Dark Brown, and Dark Red (Pre-2015) will crack quite easily. But it can also affect any color if you're just unlucky. Personally I had both the heels on both of my 2014 Shock Troopers crack just from keeping them on studs.
>>
>>10635459
there's far better ways to make money with better returns, and lego requires a fuck ton of storage space for paltry returns.

the days of sets giving 200%+ returns are over for 95% of sets, it's very seldom that a set is going to give you a very solid return anymore.

Take for example the recent Disney castle set, retired last year I think and was sold out on Lego.com early in the year, and now this year a newer one was released within a year of returement that is a superior version of the same set, and prices have thus plummeted for the original castle. Right now the old one (71040) can be obtained for barely 50 over retail. Last Christmas they were selling for over $500-600.

The point is Lego is way too risky, the ideal investment time was in the mid 2000s when prices were skyrocketing for older sets as Lego skyrocketed in popularity with the release of the Lego movie and its sequels.

Covid did give quite a boost for those prices as well, and some sets are still seeing really nice price increases, but this is mostly limited to older, more limited sets such as early 2000s Lego Star Wars sets. For example the Jango Fett's Starfighter because of that minifigure has skyrocketed in price in recent years, or the Cloud City due to the boba fett classic with arm and leg prints that is one of if not the most expensive Lego minifigure now.

The point is, doing this today only makes sense if you are buying sets at DEEP discounts. For example, the Galaxy Explorer set that Wal Mart was selling for 50% last year, and buying at least 10+ of that particular set and sitting on it.

That's another factor, you're going to be sitting on this inventory for YEARS at minimum, and even longer after the sets are retired before you resell or you aren't making jack shit in profits, especially these days with inflation. This leads to the only worthwhile sets being very expensive $100+ sets to make maximum profit off from collectors.
>>
>>10635460
ok, and? Total up what you paid for all of those sets, most won't even be worth 25% or more of what you paid for them. A few might be 50% or more, and even fewer might double the price.

Ok, so you doubled the price of a $50 set you bought and held, it's now worth $100. Now you have to sell it. ebay, bricklink, other online marketplaces are all going to have fee structures, and these days fees are shipping cost + final value + taxes, so you're paying like 10%+ (12% on ebay which is the fastest place to sell) on each item PLUS shipping costs PLUS sales tax.

So let's say you sell that $50 set for $100, great, but the customer had to pay $20 to ship such a large box item, because shipping Lego is difficult as not only are larger flat shipping boxes expensive (>$1.50 per box even from bulk sellers) but shipping rates are higher for larger items in general. So you're already down a couple bucks from paying for a box to ship it in. You're now paying fees on $120+ taxes, so let's say just 5% sales tax so around $125, That's $15 in fees alone on ebay for example. minus $50 you paid for the set and you've made a grand total of.... whoa $35 in profit and you had to wait YEARS in order to make that paltry amount of profit off a $50 set, like 3 years minimum. Congrats?

But it's not over, you've made a couple thousand on ebay this year, and now you have to pay taxes on that amount, sure hope you kept receipts of your purchases and can deduct the cost, enjoy doing that math / work for just selling Lego.
>>
>>10635460
Also just looking at your collection I can tell you most of those sets aren't going to be worth much anything at all, unless you got a good deal on them when you bought them on clearance or w/e. Ninjago sets don't really increase much in value. Harry Potter sets as well, they are not money makers at all. WW84 set was literally trash on clearance not worth anything. Star Wars X-wing is way too common and been on sale for years, it's never going to be worth anything and they will just release a new version in a year or 2 just like always.

Even that Poe's X-wing set, which retired 2 years ago isn't worth more than retail new and sealed, and no one gives a fuck about the sequel movies anyways so they won't ever be worth much money at all.
Overall you have a pretty poor collection and you're not going to make jack shit off those sets, sorry to say. If you had some mid 2010s stuff, for example the sets from Rogue One which are worth quite a lot these days that would be worth something.

This is an interesting idea, however I don't think it would work. All the Chima animals had long muzzels or beaks or otherwise, so having smaller slightly sunken eyes would look fine. But when it comes to the sonic characters the eyes are very large and right at the front of the fig. If masks were used then what would be the hollow area? The Chima heads already looked quite strange and they were designed by Lego. I can't think of a way that they could print a head and have it look passable as well as having something peer through the mask and look good. Having a specific hair piece is also an interesting idea but the heads would just look too small on Sonic characters.

Thoughts on the 2006 playscale Star Destroyer vs the 2014 one? 2014 definitely looks cleaner, but the play features on the 2006 model are so much better. The bridge that can hold mini figs is awesome and the escape pod is very cool too.
>>
>>10636339
i can understand why a collector might prefer the "accuracy" of the 2014 version, but come on now, it's Lego. Why shouldn't it be a toy with goofy shit you can play with and pose figs in?
>>
>>10635739
Imo the only way to do Lego “investing” is to buy the sets you want, open them and enjoy them, and then once you’ve gotten all the value you want out of it, sell complete with the box years later and hopefully make a little more cash than you paid.

Why is scatological humor so ubiquitous with Lego these days?
>>
>>10635645
100% true, at least here in America. I just looked at a torso from the Lion Knight's Castle that I got on Bricks and Pieces earlier this year. it has just been posed on a brick on my desk at work, hardly ever played with. It has one heel crack and one of the arms is inexplicably cracked. There is no quality control in the factories anymore, at least the ones where North America gets the parts from.

Lego chose Virgina because of globohomo: https://www.worth.com/esg-principles-drive-legos-choice-virginia-1-billion-plant/

>Richmond had attracted the attention of “a very large, capital-intensive manufacturing project that was interested in Virginia because of the Virginia Clean Energy Act,” says Wakefield. That legislation, signed by Democratic governor Ralph Northam in 2020, mandates that Virginia’s two power companies,Dominion Energy VirginiaandAppalachian Electric Power, produce 100% renewable energy by 2050. Any utility that didn’t meet the new standards would have to pay into a fund used to train members of historically disadvantaged communities for jobs in the clean energy sector.

Do we really not have any Halloween sets releasing this year? Just a fucking VIP add-on pack and this? And don't even say the Hocus Pocus set counts - it doesn't count any more than the "Haunted House" expert set from a few years ago.

You have to admit people who make a big deal for Halloween or have it as their favorite holiday are weirdo creeps though. Halloween is just for kids to dress up silly and get candy. If you are a grown man you should redirect your enthusiasm and embrace a real holiday like Christmas or Thanksgiving and make a big deal out of that.

I like Halloween as an observer. I always find it interesting to see what costumes seem to be the popular ones on any given year.
Funny little side story. I was still in grade school when the 89 Batman movie came out. We had an event where kids from all the classes throughout the day got to walk through other classes to show off their costumes. There was plenty of Batmen but I was the only dork in a homemade costume that was blue and grey like the Adam West Batman.

I think it's more that Halloween lovers feel like Christmas encroaches too much on their space. Which is kinda fair when stores are literally putting up Christmas decorations before Halloween has passed.

I wouldn't say Lego is dying. Obviously financially they're doing better than ever. They just keep making even more idiotic licensed themes like Jurassic World and Disney instead of actually good original themes. Then when they make an original theme it's some overly market tested boring slop like Dreamzzz. This has really driven a lot of long time Lego fans off. I think Lego is just a FAD among Millennials right now because people started buying it during the pandemic.

with buildings of that style there's nothing wrong with slapping on a flat roof or emphasizing a slight angle. You can spice it up by adding skylights, HVAC, or all sorts of other weird shit you see on roofs.
>>
>>10638647
Oh, well good luck ever building this irl in that case.

Surprisingly, not the case. Very few specific pieces are worth more than a dollar. Even set exclusive ones.

>Man I miss Lego LotR. It's basically the only other them besides SW to have extreme aftermarket prices.

Modular sets dab on both those themes when it comes to drastic increases in price.
>>
>>10638651
That's what I plan to do. But I have not found a satisfying solution yet. I think of maybe splitting the roof in half one for the left side with the windows, the other for the metal looking segment on the right.
>>
>>10638726
Modulars are more of a sub-theme not a theme. You are definitely right though, those prices get insane as well.

Now I see Mayan style more like. That cog wheel reminds me of Maya calendar. Are you going to stick with it? I'm glad you dropped arches. They were so out of place.

My suggestion. Since this is using molded baseplate with a deep pit in it, maybe make 'collapsed' floor that reveals Mayan king sarcophagus underneath? It doesn't have to be this deep. Just make some wedges to get cracked floor look so explorers can take a look at coffins or skeletons underneath.

The UCS Slave 1 is one of the most popular SW sets all time, and that piece is exclusive. As far as I know its the ONLY part exclusive to the set, although I may be wrong. People want to just Bricklink them together instead of buying the set because it's so expensive so that part inflates massively. The Mustafar set comes with 3 of that piece, is obscure, and unpopular. Another good example is the 4x4x6 Cylinder Quarter being nearly $40 each because it's only in one Alpha Team set and UCS Darth Maul bust. The Alpha Team set comes with 1 and the bust has 4. No other parts on the bust are exclusive or expensive so people try and Bricklink that together too. R.R Slugger made a whole video about it.

They are quite cute! I really like the panels + transparent wedges for the bionicle mech cockpit. I'd maybe change the white airplane thrusters at the top to blue to balance the colors a bit.

On the rover, would a vehicle spoiler / plow blade fit? (part # 2440pb004 on BL). The finger hinge is already there, and that part was already used as a plow in an ice planet set.

Everything you used in your mocs are also available part colors, which is great. You could build them in real life with currently existing parts! I always appreciate seeing that consideration.

The rover has actually been built IRL, it ended up coming out a little bit different than the digital moc. I'm glad you mentioned the plow idea, because I've got something a bit like that going on with it, I just need to finish it.

>>10638471
I'm not sure if opening / closing windshields or vehicle doors count as play features, but if so I guess those are my play features, along with the rotatable dish on top and the aforementioned adjustable plow on the front.
>>
>>10639281
I want to try building the mech but I'm a little concerned that the bionicle legs won't be able to support the weight of the body, since its bulkier and heavier than a typical bionicle torso. Do you think those legs will be able to support the weight?

As long as the blue socket joints are in good condition they easily should. If you buy sockets I'd suggest picking up extras if they are available so you can use the best condition ones.

You can build some big bulky bionicle bois and have them be stable without issue using just a single socket joint on the hips.
