How do I approach playing kids otb? Will they get mad and bloonder if I play a boring opening like the slow italian?
>>
>>90295601
Depends on the kids. The normal advice is to play boring chess against kids but when I played a local prodigy I thought he was more lacking in the tactical department than the positional one and I won through a tactics. The other kids I played were just too weak compared to me and such considerations didn't really matter

They don't give a shit about your opening. Sharp? Fine. Boring? Fine. They may laugh at you a little if you play the Grob (personal experience... I lost badly). As for how approach? Play your best. Try not to get distracted by the way it seems like they're not paying any attention to the board.

woke up two hours earlier than I need to, so just gonna blogpost to soothe my seethe
had a great club day yesterday, went 5/7. I didn't really think that I was “club level” but I guess it's because I am not in a big city or anything. there's pretty much only one guy I consistently lose to and today I was gonna smash him but I immediately blundered after getting a huge advantage.
I did really well with the Ruy Lopez and also played an okay KGD game.
I somehow, despite there not being any ladder at our club, feel much more motivated to improve. When I have a tangible goal of being better than some random guy, it feels as though there are things to gain and lose. Going for points in internet chess by comparison feels pointless
I think I understand what Fischer meant by the thrill of crushing an opponent's ego. I wouldn't say I am quite that sadistic (or good enough to be that sadistic) but it's definitely much more interesting to watch the people you defeat
Thanks for reading.

>I think I understand what Fischer meant by the thrill of crushing an opponent's ego
Never understood this mindset for amateurs. Losing is a slight annoyance at best to me. Maybe it's projection from people with gigantic egos, they just assume everyone is as devastated as they are by losses.

Losing isn't significantly frustrating for me either. I'm not sure, it's hard to put into words. I think chess is a lot more personal face to face and so when you defeat someone after an arduous battle, then you feel much more accomplished— even if they aren't actually crushed.
I do think you are right about projection. Especially in online play. When people use the chat to showboat or do what I call “peacocking.” Which I guess works since I do see some people here complain about it and also dish it back. Posting a troll face or insult after somebody blunders, etc.

Some kids will be well ahead of their age with their attitude and it will feel more or less feel like playing vs an adult ( usually these are the better ones at chess than the rest ), some kids won't say anything, some kids will cry if they lose, it doesn't change anything you do.
Absolutely expect to play until checkmate vs most of them to win, they do not resign.
>>
>>90296796
I only started seriously looking into playing against d4 after joining a club because it virtually seems to be the only white opening played OTB. My e4 is answered by c5 in 80% of cases to the point where I haven't even had a single chance to play a scotch. I'm considering trying my luck with the open sicilian just because it's worth investing the time in that context but I'd be wary of playing it in team events. Sticking with c3 and Bb5+ as alternatives until I gather some more experience in the open lines online.

My recent otb tourney opened my eyes to how lacking my openings are. I got terrible positions against the bad players who just bailed me out with nonsense moves. I also got nothing against the good players, it was equality all the way until my inevitable blunder into a loss.
And my experience absolutely agrees with what's been said about d4. Really need to get my QGD sidelines worked out.

could someone explain for a beginner why C and F file bishops are good to go for in the opening stage?
I feel like it does nothing if the positions aren't open or if my opponent doesn't blunder in the first 8 moves or so
>>
>>90297521
>I feel like it does nothing if the positions aren't open
Just open up the position with a well-timed pawn break.
>or if my opponent doesn't blunder in the first 8 moves or so
Many opponents will.
>>
>>90297521
The opening stage isn't about immediately winning shit, the point is to fight for the center and place your pieces where they've got some scope or at least some potential.
>>
>>90297679
This. All the best opening books start with a tableau of what the ideal piece layout(s) look(s) like. They should also cover ideal and common pawn structures, how to deal with common pawn weaknesses doubled pawns on specific files etc). Books that jump straight into analyzing a master game in that opening are not for Club Monkeys.
>>
>>90297521
Surely this should be obvious? c4 is on the same diagonal as f2 (weakness) and g1 (king position after castling). Even if the position is somewhat closed this fact can allow tactics.

>Never understood this mindset for amateurs.
because you haven't been to a tournament. you haven't felt people squirm in reaction to certain moves and relax in reaction to other moves. everyone who has played tourney chess understands carlsen's "i didn't sense he was struggling at all" because OTB you can fucking feel your opponent's heartbeat. your own heart will start bouncing out of your chest. may as well compare playing an NBA game vs. playing an NBA video game with OTB vs. online

important reminder that most players (ivanchuk being the classic example) have massive panic attacks while playing. being able to play well through the panic attack isn't easy and it defines who is good and who is bad

never once did i ever get nervous in basketball. never experienced butterflies or got scared before a game. never had heart palpitations. meanwhile have had chess games that are like out of body experiences

i've seen people's hands start to shake so violently they can't make moves in time trouble
>Losing is a slight annoyance at best to me.
how much you care is going to correlate exactly with effort. i can lose 50 blitz games in a row and not get that angry... one bad blunder in a tournament and it's pure self-hatred

and here's another truism for ya' in sports/games... add money to the equation and everything changes. doesn't matter if people are playing for $1 a game... the messing around goes away and the meanness comes out

on the internet you always have the luxury of going "eh well that account just got fucked up" it feels like the account got ruined instead of your name. when you see your own name on a pairing sheet instead of "BlazeItXxX" it'll feel like you're bobby fischer in your first tournament

just the amount of attitude you'll receive from opponents will get you emotionally invested. this interaction slayed me once board right next to me

>low theory
It's one of the most theoretical openings. French players play it because they memorize theory, which is relatively easy from black's perspective, that wins them games in the same way every time. The French forces the game to be played very specifically and if white doesn't know what to do then it is very easy for the French player to win. This is why most French players collapse if the game goes on past the early middlegame - they don't understand chess that well, just the opening. It's really the opening for those most scared of actually playing chess because the French structure is so not-chess.

>>
>>90300504
Yeah sure, one of the strongest players alive has no idea what he's talking about...
He can identify the necessary skills needed to reach 2200 because he understands chess.
But sure, go ahead and take advice from your 2300 rated streamer who has been playing for 30 years and understand nothing.
>>
>>90300559
Regardless, he doesn't have any context for the rating range of 2000-2200 as an adult. Everyone there knows openings. And everyone there is pretty serious about chess. 2200 is master level. Noone who hits master as an adult knows 5 move variations in their openings and then just wins on tactics.
>>
>>90300580
He doesn't know what he's talking about when it comes to regular people improving to master strength. We have a couple guys in here who are scraping master level and they take openings very seriously. Everyone I've ever met in person who's 1800-2100-2200 otb studies openings. Hikaru was barely able to form memories when he hit 2200.
>>
>>90300590
>Everyone there knows openings. And everyone there is pretty serious about chess. 2200 is master level. Noone who hits master as an adult knows 5 move variations in their openings and then just wins on tactics
Well you're probably right about this, but couldn't he be talking about 2200 online though? I haven't seen the video in question so i'm not sure.
>>
>>90300552
What did he say
>>
>>90300619
Well 2200 lichess is different. Even then you need to know openings to not get bad positions consistently. Hikarus perspective is warped because he could beat any NM on the planet with the bongcloud so it seems like openings are irrelevant. If you have the tactical, positional, and endgame understanding of a top super grandmaster then sure you can play a3, a4, a5 as your first 3 moves
>>
>>90300608
>Hikaru was barely able to form memories when he hit 2200.
Well that really proves the point that you don't need a strong opening knowledge to reach 2200.
>>

they just don't get it. i have a friend who's been playing piano since she was 6 (chinese tiger parents forced her to learn the piano) and i recently started learning and i suck at it. she can't understand how bad i am at it because she learned so long ago as a child. it's the same for these chess masters. they don't know how they did it because it's become a part of them. they don't consciously think about chess improvement anymore, just like how my friend doesn't think about playing the piano it just comes naturally to her.
>>
>>90300665

At the end of the day Hikaru is right if you think about it. As long as you aren't losing our if the opening (in other words, basic openings), then you will win the game if you are better tactically. You will see tactics in 100% of games and your pet opening lines in like 10% of games, why focus on the minority?

D4 is literally cheating.

Also I've never played d4 or the London but it genuinely does look like a great opening for beginners. Tyler always has a good opening position every single game as white it feels like

>>
>>90300298

>>

This. Just look at the eval graph for your games. How often does white maintain a slight advantage in yours? More likely the advantage bounces around 0 until someone starts winning tactically

Tactics rarely come out of nowhere, especially at above 1800 fide. People there aren't just dropping pieces for no reason, you need to pressure them into it. And that comes by organizing the correct plans in the middle game which comes from knowing your openings. Or if you are Hikaru and have already seen millions of positions and analyzed thousands of games in your life, then you don't really need the opening part at all.
>>
>>90300577

>>

Well a big difference between hans and magnus/hikaru is that with the latter you've got a trillion examples on youtube where they had to blitz out moves, OTB, at such a rapid speed that it's incomprehensible they could be cheaters

>>

not impossible, not quite. A contact lens showing stockfish live would do it. Deep state have the tech to do that.
It would be trivial to have something transmitting the player's view of the board straight to an engine, which they could see reacting live and then copy it.

Unlike l'chess, Chess.com seems to purposefully match new (or high RD) accounts with other new/high RD accounts. Amusingly this means that you often find yourself at ~1800-2000 after 2-3 games. As your provisional status doesn't show on chess.com you can just rating sit forever and pose as a 98%-er.

>>

>>
>>90303471
The Karla gambit is a lot trickier. You have to get through enough games with a rating over 2000 to get an RD below 110 and lose your lichess '?' of shame. Even then you have to keep on playing, and winning, games to keep your rating.
If Karla played on chess.com(TM) she could finally hold 2000 rapid FOREVER.

NTA but depends on how you want to play it. There's 4 big lines in the french for White
Advance
Exchange
Nd2
Nc3
You don't need to study the exchange, you can put minimal time into the advance and still get something decent out of the opening.
>Nd2
the Tarrasch, black has a few ways to play but the biggest responses are
>c5
>Nf6
c5 is easier to play and leaves you with an IQP, Nf6 is pretty theoretical since you have to know how to sacrifice material in the main line or you'll lose pretty handily.
Next is the main line French
>Nc3
The mainline has 2 big responses against it:
>Bb4
>Nf6
Bb4 is the Winawer, it's very theoretical opening and you do have to study it.
>Nf6
This is an alternative where White has a few responses and Black can play different moves against them. It's not heavy on theory and the positions are playable.

Of course if you don't like these there's also the alternative of playing a Rubinstein. It's not a very active opening but it's solid and you can grind people down with it. There's also an advanced Rubinstein in the Nc3 variation: 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Bg5 dxe4
This is generally regarded as a better rubinstein variation so you could play this.
Theoretically you could make a very low maintenance French by playing the Rubinstein against Nc3 and Nd2.

>>
>>90296276
>>90296181
You might want to change hobby. Go with something more appropriate for your IQ, like Simon Says
>>
>>90303996
If you've ever joined a club or played an OTB tournament you will understand the question. It's not about wanting to, it's about the opponents you get when you're unrated and new.
>>
>>90304017
When you're unrated and new your adult opponents crush you? Is that what you're saying?
>>
>>90304024
I'm saying you will play the weakest players available to start, which are invariably mostly the kids. That did change somewhat since the boom though. There are more adult improvers around now.
>>
>>90304024
Look up tournament flyers on USCF or some state federation/association, most are sectioned/flighted and some have stipulations about who can play up.
Unrated and low rated sections are mostly filled with scholastic players because most are new to the game or are still bad.

Switched to d4 and the number of Englunds I'm getting is crazy. Been playing 2.e4 and transposing to something I know but I should learn it if people are so intent on giving me free elo.
>>
Why does chess use increment instead of guaranteeing a set minimum time per move that doesn't accumulate?
>>
>>90305727
Because of Fischer.
>>
>>90305832
What?
>>
>>90305881
Increment was invented by Fischer.
>>
>>90305694
Definitely learn it just fair warning the Englund gambit people are fairly dedicated to their opening. It's going to be a lot of prep (not necessarily theory) before you exhaust them of their memes. I'm assuming you are a reasonable mid range or better rating. If you're on the lower end they will run out of tricks very quickly and now you're +5 or whatever. The 2...d6 stuff is more dangerous than the Nc6 lines, generally. There are more interesting shenanigans available to black with that one and it's more work on white's end to prove the +2 advantage fish likes to say it is.
