In Vanguard, you have a central Commander-type card called, naturally, your Vanguard. Surrounding him are your rear guards, divided into two rows. Your front row rear guards can block attacks for you, assuming they have the ability icon for it. Your back row creatures "boost" your attackers and make them harder to defend against. As you attack, your opponent discards cards from their hand to guard, but then, on your Vanguard's attack, you perform a drive check. This reveals the top card(s) of your deck, and if it's a card with a trigger icon, you get a power increase, plus an extra effect depending on the type of trigger. What makes things really interesting is that guards are placed before the drive check. You have to be aware of the odds of your opponent pulling a trigger (or multiple) when you attempt to defend yourself. Similar to FFTCG, you're drawing at least 2 cards per turn to make up for the loss from guarding.

A lot of TCGs fail to sell you an actual world the cards are exhibiting.I was playing Shadowverse recently and there's just a "Fighter" card. Some dude with a sword.When there's no interconnectivity between the art, players zone out and just read effects.It's really important to do things like, between 4 creature cards, having the same mountain in the background or a banner on the side.
