SoL lacks any excitement and hentai is too focused on coom. +sentai doesn't seem to give me any particular enemies so what would I even do with that.

>>
>>88107514

Either Shounen or hentai:

Shounen depends on the limits of the setting. If there are truly no limits and magic and such is on the table, then it is incredible.

Hentai is just hentai. Hentai protags rarely have to worry about ancilliary life stuff and it is just a matter of how much they interact.

Technically I think shounen wins as you could focus on physical pleasure and such as a focus for betterment which would give you a hentai-lite experience just with more consequences for actions as derived by the shounen formula.

Need more info on the black crystal.
Is it just my old life record is removed and I have to make a new one?
OR is it a normalization option, aka no one notices or cares about me. I can punch someone in the face, they'll wonder why their face hurts and onlooker wonder why that guy just flinched?

>>
>>88107975

Choice depends on some specifics.

3) free money and the ability to have it appear in cash (hopefully chosen each day) makes it less problematic with audits.

8) Massive information dump, very good.

9) knowing languages can be a great help

10) If touching a person adds them to a database and I can concentrate later, this is great. If I have to initiate the change while touching them, its crap.

Actual choices:

10 - if databse version; Otherwise 9

3 - it is inflation adjusted free money

In Dragonfall?

1. Yes, they did. Most - maybe all - of the builds used companions.

2. Granting wishes lets you customize the setting. You can help/hurt the gods, move continents around, screw the Lovecraftian horrors, save/destroy the elves . . . all with little chance of reprisal.

I'm not Tankista, but I would assume it would depend on the spell and the being in question. For example, I don't see why you couldn't use any of the healing Reanimation spells on any living creature, as they're more a "rewind time"/"fast forward healing" ability.

Alteration spells would likely be more complicated, as they actively change how living flesh grows. A master flesh sculptor could probably quickly figure out how to adapt the spell to differ biologies, while a rookie might cause more damage than good.

Usurpation spells might require substantial reworking, as they hijack the central nervous system of the victim. If the victim has a substantially different brain structure than the caster, you might need the spell equivalent of an adaptor to control the target.

Anime or western. I play cyoas for escapism, when I see photos of irl women I start thinking they are real people and full of intestinal parasites and bacteria.
>>
>>88110193
Depends on the type of cyoa, honestly.
IRL photos might work great for some cyoas, western for others and anime for the rest.
It sets the tone of the cyoa, too.
If you're doing something grounded, or set in the real world IRL photos might work. Fantastical/power fantasy works well with western stuff. Anime is good with alot of stuff but it just makes it feel generic imho

>Since you're here, mind if I ask a lore question? What is Basilia's proposed Fifth Sin in Blood Magic?
I’ll be honest: I haven’t thought of this thoroughly. Thinking about it logically, it should be something related to self-awareness of magic, but it would break the neat complete picture of the Chain of Sins. Perhaps that’s why her attempt had failed – it didn’t and couldn’t fit. But this was supposed to be something mysterious that is up to the reader’s interpretation, so you can come up with any other answer as well.
…I find myself answering “hurr durr up to ur interpretation lol” too much recently. Perhaps I should devote even more time to planning things than before.

>>88109848
>Is the green at the bottom one of the polar ice caps?
It should be land covered by the ice caps, kind of like the Antarctica. Except here it is directly connected to normal land, so there will be gradual change when (if?) I get to making that part of the map.

To finish the second route of the War of Fakers. I already did too much of it to back out now. So I keep delaying it. And it has been years since then…

I could, but I won’t.

>What are you thinking of adding or removing?
As I said many threads ago:
1. Every faction will be getting an advisor who will be commenting every single option, giving voice and reasoning to the hollow “-x faction opinion” every time. There will be banter among the advisors, too. This should humanize the factions (and will be part of my plan to make Purists less evil, by making their advisor the most reasonable of them all, or something like a straight man). However, my plan here requires showing their portraits every single time, so to make sure it does not get stale, I need to find a way to change their expressions, so if someone could give me a reliable idiot-proof guide on how to use AI to edit their poses or at least faces, I would greatly appreciate it.
2. Purists will be less evil, Adversary will be less nice/perfect.
3. More political decisions, by a lot. And every one will have advisor commentary.
4. Planar Chart will be reworked to fit my current notes on everything I have ever planned to do.
5. Stats for both followers and the player are getting cut outright. The focus will shift to being the leader of the Convention and political stuff, and there’s no point in allowing you to be extremely weak as an Omniarch to get more mana.
6. You will start with a massive mana deficit, to add urgency to the situation. But there should be more options to give you mana.
7. Spellcraft will be fleshed out, and you will be given a set of 3 spell examples per option. More options will be given in general.
8. Not sure what to do with Sorceries yet. Perhaps I’ll leave them as is.
9. Units will represent the various types of units the Convention can have under you without specifying the number rather than letting the player make it so that a grand total of 3 magical girls will be defending the entire Observable Multiverse.
10. And various other minor things.

>How well would it work if someone tried to control, heal, or sacrifice from the mind of the philosophical zombies created by certain spells?
It shouldn’t work at all, assuming I am reading your question correctly. Philosophical zombies don’t have any mind, the spell only emulates them having any. It is an elaborate illusion.
>When a spell's description specifies that it affects "humans", does it mean the biological human species or the general metaphysical order of mortals, IE, would it be possible to cast such spells as Lobotomy or Lesser Healing on aliens or fantasy races?
I meant it as a term for “general sapient being” like you guessed, but there should be differences depending on who you use it on, or what specifically, like Anon >>88110125 had guessed. Only that Usurpation shouldn’t depend so much on brain structure, but on alienness of the mind. You wouldn’t be able to easily adjust the mind of an eldritch abomination not because it is so physically impossible, but because its mind works in impossible ways.
>In the same vein, is the Redemption spell a unique byproduct of the Sheol demons' human origin, or could it work on for example the demons of Gehenna?
It should only work on demons of Sheol.

>Most of the example characters have similar aspect limitations to the player, ONLY the majority of the companions from BLood Magic; there isn't such an aspect limit for Zenobia and Basilia featuring Dante from Hell Rebellion, the tsar, or the Sixth Omniarch. Does it hint that the ally sheet also made a deal with Eclipse?
You could read it that way, yes.
In reality, I was adhering to the rules of my own CYOA for most characters because I wanted to keep things balanced and fair to the player. You could easily imagine that there’s blood mages out there who adhere to the general rule of “x path has y amount of aspects” without being involved with Eclipse, which is why it is the general rule. Likewise, there should also be other extraordinary mages who went beyond these limits. You could work to research other aspects and so on yourself, as the CYOA only gives you your starting point, it does not define your ceiling outright.
>Character profiles say that you have to be of the same Covenant to be their enemies...no such text exists for the Ally option.
Really? Whoops. Well, uh, you are supposed to have covenant-specific characters as allies only when you are a part of that covenant. I guess I just forgot to mention this anywhere.
The reason for why the reverse requires picking characters as enemies in the same covenant – well, they are your enemies if you’re not in the covenant by default.
>Is the Path system in general a real thing, even as a social construct, or just something used to explain the different kinds of Blood mages to the reader?
It is a real general rule. They might get called different names in different places and have slightly different characteristics from time to time, but they should be a real thing.

>Is it still canon that Destroyers can breach the Void for free?
Nope. You can say that it was only ever “canon” in that specific CYOA iteration due to Basilia’s machinations. Without her external involvement it is no longer the case.
>>Is this how the Hell Rebel ignited their spark?
No. That is its own thing, which is meant to be a random freak occurrence, a black swan event.
>What Disciplines (+Traits) do the V2 characters have?
I haven’t thought about traits, but disciplines:
Classic – Kina, Gregory, Alton, Basilia, Hydra, Alice
Diabolic – Alexander, Cornelia, Sergius
Esoteric – Olivia, Vella, Ian
Vampiric – Yang, Fermin, Noelia
>Is there any reason why one can't use Nameless Warrior to pour arbitrarily large amounts of mana into a Sabbath Sorcery, and solve the mana crisis with a self concealing crime?
Because I hadn’t thought of that, so the answer would be: you can’t pour fake mana from Nameless Warrior into a sorcery, or the world created by Sabbath would get erased by the end of the curse, or anything along those lines.
>Are mission benefits a pre-emptive compensation for the player's trouble, or rewards for completing the mission?
In some cases they are pre-emptive, and in other you get them as rewards.

>>88110157
>Any plans on updating Time of Troubles?
Much like with everything else, of course I have plans. But that will be far in the future.
As for what will be in its complete overhaul, consider this a teaser: the Godhead religion from the world map DLC will be added as an option. It will be the “ultra nightmare hardcore” difficulty option compared to your normal “hardcore” Umbraic run.

rentry.org/voldy on setting it up yourself, you only need marginal amounts of vram nowadays. /g/sdg for some more guides and a (questionable) community around it, though I am in this thread and not the only one who uses it. What you are looking for is likely the Inpainting option, which allows for regeneration of a masked area with given parameters. I am not overly familiar with the intricacies of that option but am fairly certain that even if automatic1111's UI cannot provide what you need the comfy UI in the thread referenced can, or an appropriate addon for the webui. It's all pretty straightforward. Best models for anime-ish art are NAI, Anything 3 and berry mix to my knowledge

Is diversity and representation important for CYOAs?

>>
>>88110713
Yeah, make sure to diversify your bait. Look at Cyrus stuff for an upper limit
>>
>>88110713
Not unless there's a good reason for it. In particular, restricting the number can give the player a feel for the world. If straight people are a discriminated minority in your setting, tolerated only to produce the next generation, most of the "useful" companions should be gay. If your cyoa takes place in pre-colonial Africa, it makes no sense to have a bunch of white/asian/Indian characters.

The best writers show, rather than tell, what their world is likel.

>What are some books you like?
I’ve read many books when I was younger, but now I realize I hadn’t read much proper literature in years (visual novels and fanfiction don’t count). Now that I think about it, it is hard to even recall the things I’ve liked, both because of time and my poor memory, which is quite sad and embarassing.
I’ll try to recall some books now:
Guy de Maupassant’s short novels about the Franco-Prussian war were pretty charming.
I remember really liking A Song of Ice and Fire, but I think my past self does not match my current tastes, so I fear re-reading it and no longer liking it.
The very beginning of The Count of Monte Cristo was great, but it quickly jumped the shark when Edmond Dantes actually got around to getting his revenge. The worst part was him forgiving the guy who was the most to blame for his misfortune, while giving the most disproportionately harsh punishment to the guy who was the least to blame. That made me mad, and I am still mad to this day.
Russian parody of Harry Potter – Porry Gatter (or should it be Porry Hatter then?) – was amazing, I love every single one of these four books. But it only works in Russian.
The Alexiad gave me an interesting perspective on the Byzantine Empire and was very insightful, though the prose was quite purple and Anna Komnene was prone to lying or being wrong, as my translation’s annotations kept on proving (but that’s how it was with most historians at the time, I imagine).
I recall that Spartacus by Raffaello Giovagnoli had impressed me a lot many years ago, but I cannot recall a single thing about it now, unfortunately.

Yeah, the descriptions for Followers will be expanded overall.

I had couple of Blood Magic questions as well, if you don't mind.

Can you "properly" learn spells by reading minds of other mages with Memory Entry? Is the replica mind created by Insight sufficient to cast spells known by the target? Would either of these work together with Necromancy to read or copy minds of the dead?
>>
>>88110477
>You could work to research other aspects and so on yourself, as the CYOA only gives you your starting point, it does not define your ceiling outright.
From a philosophical perspective, I like the limit on aspects in Blood Magic. Archimedes once said that he could move the world, if he had a lever long enough, a fulcrum strong enough, and somewhere to stand. Limiting the aspects could be seen as a way to maintain the "somewhere to stand" idea - to keep themselves from losing it, and going full Destroyer, they block certain aspects off as "impossible".

I do like the ability to grow, though. CYOAs that permanently cap your abilities rub me the wrong way.

>Can you "properly" learn spells by reading minds of other mages with Memory Entry? Is the replica mind created by Insight sufficient to cast spells known by the target? Would either of these work together with Necromancy to read or copy minds of the dead?
If you mean instantly learn a spell by examining how they do it in their own mind – then no. Some minor part of the same spell will function slightly differently depending on the perspective of who casts it even though the result always works the same.
Kind of like cooking where you get things like “add a pinch of salt or two according to taste” when you don’t know how much is a pinch of salt and what the result would taste like to you.
But you could still learn it that way through practice and adapting to the changes. It’s just that you use someone else as an example instead of written instructions.
So all of your suggestions would work to get your hands on knowledge how that particular mage was casting spells, but you still need to figure out how you would be doing it.

>>88110872
>I do like the ability to grow, though. CYOAs that permanently cap your abilities rub me the wrong way.
Which is a part of why I decided it should work like that.
The other part is consistency: if everyone is limited by X number of aspects, how would you get people like Zenobia and Basilia to begin with, when they are supposed to break the pattern and enable you having access to magic in the first place?

I guess I almost always take precognition type abilities in CYOAs (not just my own) because Worm taught me that precog powers are the best. So my Worm builds always involve me having at least one Thinker power regardless of which I theme I am planning to go with at the time.
My Outer Reincarnation builds predictably end up with me having a bunch of View of Fore (just like my stand-in character), or at least one, unless I am going with All-Glimpse.
Fate Another Pretender is the one I am playing the most often, and it's usually the most varied of all, though I am always tempted to pick Revelation as a Personal Skill for the same reasons. If I am making a Servant, it is usually an Assassin or a Caster, and when I am making a Master it is a magus with abnormally high focus on mystery or overpowered Command Spells.
I consider Magocratic Convention and Time of Troubles to be too outdated at this point, so I can't look at them without wincing, preventing me from playing them.
Build a Barracks and 4 Farms usually have me create some sort of build that focuses on the gimmick mechanic of the particular dwarven clan I've chosen at the time, but there's only so many I can make, so I rarely return to it now.
Hell Rebellion is the simplest of one-pagers, so the builds I tend to make for it mostly depend on my mood and I don't give them too much thought.
Now that I think about it, I've heard that authors don't usually like to play their own CYOAs, which I find odd. I make CYOAs I not only love making, but have fun playing as well. If they weren't fun to me, I wouldn't have made them. How can other people just make something they don't want to play?

>How can other people just make something they don't want to play?
Personally I often make builds to CYOAs in general to "beat" the situation author has presented by making the most with it while adhering to the rules, avoiding choices I don't like, and trying to keep a common theme if possible. Doing that with setting and rules I myself made up just doesn't feel satisfying, sort of like playing chess against yourself. I do like reading builds made by others though, to see paths I wouldn't have taken or even thought of.

Interesting . . .

While I always try to grab the "see magic" ability in a cyoa (any cyoa), Perception didn't do much for me in Blood Magic. Oh, don't get me wrong - I like the spells a lot.

However, I already live very deeply in my head, and I find myself wanting to be more active in experiencing and shaping the world (while minimizing my personal risk). A bit like Old Father Williams in "Alice in Wonderland", I suppose.

That's why Corruption, Reanimation, and Negation catch my eye. The ability to change the world for the better, to heal myself (and others), and counter hostile magic. I suppose I could swap Alteration in if I had to, but those three are an excellent match for what I want.

I suppose that's why Basilia's quest appeals to me, too. A damsel in distress, promising secrets, and begging for help? In real life, I don't think I could turn that down.

(Excellent cyoa, by the way.)

Go to furry conventions across the world to seduce countless furry bitches with extremely confident claims that I can turn into a wolf/am I werewolf or whatever. It’s not bestiality it’s shapeshifting, so at least 99% of them totally would, search your feelings, you just know this to be true.

>From my latest build
Andor: Zep, Blackthorn, Bonius, Delathwyn
Kaldgrim: Illenwyn, Vanrir, Gromna, Ignar, Morrigan, Grix
Ixtacotak: Nenetl

I really liked how picking companions would change the world in some cases, that’s why I always pick the 4 companions that help return magic to the west/north (darkie nations don’t matter btw).
Also yes this was a broodlord build, but I only took that so my powerful magical offspring wont betray me or be evil.

Bullshit. Several companions change the world significantly and several give opportunities unavailable otherwise. I always save the elves for example and in several builds I take Sanguinir to be my sire (you can become a vampire without him but if you make him the worlds only daywalker you have a huge advantage), several offer training, the dwarf gets you another egg worth of dragonite, etc.

>>
>>88115805
Am I missing something? Brynjars wish is really stupid.
>>
>>88115762
I don't see any spend of 11 points that'll give you as much power as the loyalty of a dude who was so strong all the dragons of an entire continent were pissing themselves in fear of him

>>88115805
>>88115824
Brynjar is the most based person on Elderia. "never, never, never get drunk during a dragonfall" has gotta be rule number 1 on this planet, lest you end up losing your soul in exchange for another round of drinks or something. Brynjar however doesn't give a fuck and got completely plastered.
>>
>>88115839
Okay that is a funny way to look at it, Brynjar has balls of steel to get drunk and make a wish.

I also really like granting Laos wish so he can find out he is the stranger.
>>
>>88115839
It is also worth noting that to permanently animate a gollum and have it be capable of casting lots of spells would normally require t4 animate construct so you actually make him a t4 mage if you grant his wish.

>>88115864
Laos is cool I just can't afford him with all the other companions my build buys
maybe I'd feel different if I understood what level of martial arts fantasy dragonfall operated on. like, is this a murim/wuxia style fantasy where the peak martial artists are natural disasters?

>>88115892
I find that a bit dubious
he used something clearly different to the animate construct spell, given that his soul went in there
but then that goes back to the old dragonfall question "how much leeway do you have in granting the wishes"
>>
>>88115985
You not a living cloud with big boobs and anime eyes.
>>
>>88115989
I can usually only justify taking Lao if I am in Muzuchi and want him as a teacher. I would say that the martial arts level is pretty high considering abilities like shadow clones are floating around.

I would say that his inability to animate the body indicates his magic isn't powerful enough. But you are right it does come down to how much leeway we have. Muchkins really ruined it for everyone as I feel the original intent of the cyoa was more open.

FUCK NO
That was the coolest path!
Magocratic Convention is one of my favorite CYOA’s, so I’m hyped to hear that it might get an update, but this part is upsetting.
If you’re about it being unbalanced, then fair enough, but the mechanical advantages were never important to me.
I just loved the story idea of the Omniarch powering Eden themself, leaving them tapped/drained of energy. This would paint a massive target on your back, but you have True Immortality, and it also heavily incentivizes all three factions to keep you alive.
Irrelevant side note, but why do you think the Purists seem evil or Eclipse not evil enough? To me, they seemed fine as-is

Not him but it has always been accepted here that the backdrop of the setting has the statement that Adversary was right about everything and win no matter what you do. And since they are right about everything then the purists are wrong about everything and their world killing is not only evil but inefficient.
You can say that is because the narrator is one of them but considering the plot itself is already hidden it would make more sense for it not to be as black and white, specially if the player doesn't want to join them or disagrees with them. Including me, fuck Adversary/Eclipse.
>>

The purists will oppose ANY sensible choice that you might have. On the Cyoa they are not a faction. They are a fucking burden that you have to tardwrangle or you will lose.

Although it's more for taking Eyeless Sight without Sight (nor Scales), and for taking Animal Speech which is an out of combat thing so you can just Mutate it when you need. Use those 25 points to get max Crawling instead, way more useful for you, and you can mutate tier 4 in emergencies.

I just posted it for being built around companions, I may not be able to accurately reconstruct some of thoughts though, I made like 10 builds in a frenzy back then and it was a year ago.

>taking animal speech
Pillar of the build is being battle-bros with Vanrir, who is a wolf. It does read like he could understand my human speech, but doing him the courtesy of not shutting down the radio when I get into combat is a consideration

>crawling
A feature I have pretty much always ignored due to flying or not really thinking about it with humanoid builds. Very true and an angle for improvement.

>eyeless sight
For being a cool anime swordsman with Muramasa. "Seeing" 360° around you. I treated it as an extra sense rather than as an extension to sight. The sense itself does not require the actual eyes, and having that ability doesn't require me to have no eyes. Quite sound imo.

>starting on Kaldgrim after pissing off Ordin
Something I was aware of and chose to ignore.
Cringe text I posted back then, which acknowledged this in the first sentence:
"Hope Ordin will forgive me for reaching into his pocket..hanging out with his grandson and being a strong warrior may help. Plan is to fulfill Vanrirs dream and be his bro for life. Going on adventures together, epic tales, camp fires. Enslaved to him on paper, but I believe his vision lines up with mine. Wielding the story-material sword Muramasa adds to it, and the bitch better behave, lifelinked as she is. I will cast runic bond between us, making me take only half of all damage while her near-unbreakable metal body tanks the other half. Taking regeneration was probably a waste of points with the tier 3 boon. Going to stay in humanoid form most of the time again. My breath negates other breaths. Wielding a dragonite sword + cursing enemies with dragonite weakness = profit. Rootless roadtrips!"

Thanks for pointing those out

It built an interesting world, gives you a clear idea of your place in it and gives you tools to fuck about and make changes to that world

Most CYOAs fail on one of these three points. The clearest comparison is with Hatchling, and the difference is immediately apparent. Whereas Hatchling says "yeah there's a fantasy world out there, whatever", Dragonfall lays its cock on the table for all to see. You've got continents, history, powerful figures past and present with their own agendas, and it's up to you to decide how your era is going to shake up the established order and adjust your build to that end. Dragonfall understands that in order to choose your own adventure, you need to have an understanding of how that adventure might develop.

The Scenic Route was another CYOA that got this exactly right. Despite being pretty bare-bones in terms of the choices, it approached worldbuilding and the player's role in that world with the same attitude; it found the happy medium between a TroyX cyoa's meaningless powerwank and the horror CYOA's tendency to write a really interesting world and reduce the player's role in it to short-lived meat for the grinder.

Lol very true. >>

When bloodmagic was written the convention were more of a plot point than anything else and having to play as them wasn't on the table. I (and most other anons) didn't give a shit that ecplise was succeeding in solving the magical entropy problem with the time loop, we had our own goals.

Interesting - I never saw Eclipse as the good guys, even in the early version. They came across more as . . . ideological fanatics, I suppose. People who would rather see the multiverse burn, than give up their preferred solution. Sort of the blood magic counterparts to the Convention's Purist faction.

Throw in their efforts to play puppetmaster, and basically kidnapping slave soldiers from across the multiverse (such as the player) . . . yeah, no. You could work with them, and (to be honest) I wouldn't mind helping them in exchange for magic - but not the good guys.

Ark (and to a lesser extent the Supremacy) struck me as the good guys. The ones trying to save Sheol's humans, or build a utopia (albeit one they would rule).
