Decent set of general purpose metallic paints that won't break the bank?

Did a little progress on my self imposed challenge to paint these guys with craft paints/craft materials. Trying for TT standard with the craft paint and it’s been fun figuring out how to work with it. Responding to last time I posted, they’ll be going inside of square movement trays eventually.

If I'm army painting I just use black templar and call it a day. if I'm trying a little I use an off-black I think is appropriate. That can be any tint of black you'd want. Blue-ish black looks nice, but it's not like anything is stopping you from trying brown-ish or green-ish black or whatever. I tend to stray from greys because grey is the most uninteresting color imaginable.

Picrel (by Stahly at Tale of Painters) is the cleanest I've seen in a bit, and it builds up from black.
Then again I also like dark metallic a lot, if it's black metal armor.

I think it’s the print markings. Never used a resin model before. It’s prominent on the right thigh and there’s a print line across the neck and hair. I already had to snip off some leftover resin nubs when it arrives.

I love this camo pattern but I have painting it. The base coat, some dry brushing, and shadows are done. I need to clean some things up a bit though. First coat of varnish is going on soon so I can put decals and start to weather and chip it. KMT Chinese Vickers A4E11 light amphibious tank. The tanker is just placed in at the moment. Doing fine details are rough. I add a tiny amount of flow aid into the paint to thin it without ugly separation like would happen if I used water. The saturation is good but the paint is very runny, so it all about doing big areas and hoping the wash does detail work for me. I normally am not somebody who uses a lot of wash but that’s how I’ve got to work with craft paints. I haven’t even attempted trying to progressively blend colors but I imagine it would be a pain.

Hearthfire Warriors? Seems like most of my Kill Team is going to be Demiurg now because I just kind of bought a whole box to do one conversion and now I don't really want to waste the box.

Seems like I'm getting better with each iteration, but I'm still figuring out the highlight colors. Are the brown highlight colors on the left two too warm or mudding the scheme because it's the same as the shade colors of the ochre?

you can always mix and match parts from other kits, lengthen limbs or swap parts out to give you different types of aliens.

As far as colors are concerned I think they all look good. I have a hard time really seeing a difference, the female one just looks a little more orange I think.

I like painting black armour with a black contrast paint over a blue>grey>white zenithal and then edge highlighting with your classic space wolves trio of the fang, russ grey, and then fenrisian grey. Lots of other recipes out there though and you could easily use any dark colour to white gradient and it'd read okay

In Darren Latham's 20 top tips he mentions that there used to be national styles, French, German, Spanish, etc. I can find practically nothing about this online, possibly because it's not in English.

Ye sure anon, it's really not a crazy gradient if you break it down simple. Your black contrast is your work horse for blacking everything out and then you're just hitting your edges with a wide highlight of the fang, a thinner highlight of russ and then touch your corners with your brightest highlight. Left is current method whereas right is attacking all edges with brightest highligjlight and yoh can see it reads sort of strangely

I mean, black contrast paint over a three color zenithal is a lot more complex than just blacking everything out. The effect is subtle but I like how it came out on the backpack, there's more depth to it than just the highlights but it's still clearly not grey.
The funny thing is, right doesn't read strange to me since everybody and their dog is over-highlighting these days.

>simply can’t stand that i never seem to finish anything and i never seem to be able to paint well.
you need to finish your pieces to learn sth. The post-mortem stage is where you can look back on your process and assess areas that need improvements.
>i’ve finished two models in my life and have been painting for a long time. getting to this point took days for me. i don’t know what i’m doing wrong.
you keep doing the same thing over and over without seeing it through. It's not an effective method to learn any skill.

Imagine somebody was trying to build a table, but they never get further than cutting the wood, giving up before putting it together. By the end you'll not have learned much more than using a saw. You won't be able to build a table. You can say you've been woodworking for a long time, but you never actually built the table.

You need to make an effort to improve to actually improve. My advice is to finish ANYTHING. Then make an inventory on where you think you succeeded or failed in what you set out to do. Get feedback from others as well and compare that against your goals. It's an iterative process, but you need to go through the cycle in it's entirety.

>>
>>88108230
Turpentine and acrylics don't react with each other, but you could probably destroy your acrylic layers when they're not cured because the entire process is pretty abrasive. Varnishing helps, too. You can find plenty of odorless thinners in your local crafts store, try those.
>>
>>88108230
Think you may be too aggressive with the turpentine, using too much.

I'd personally use methyl spirits over turpentine.
Think it's also called mineral spirits.
It's pretty common in hardware stores.
It's the kind they colour and blend "puke-chemicals" in, so that bench people can't buy cheap alcohol.

While I generally like Vallejo "Metal Color" line, I have issues with their "chrome" and "aluminium" shades - each time I try to use them, they don't form even surface but pool right away and I use them straight from bottle. Other, darker metallic shades have no such problem (like magnesium or iron).

Could anyone give me a hint what I could do wrong?

Sounds like you just care too much about how your models turn out. Just means your more of a painter than a gamer. Try painting some stuff that just doesn't matter at all. Throw together some objective markers out of some spare bits and just paint them with your favorite paints/recipes. Doesn't matter if they match your army, if you like your objective counter enough you can always repaint it to match later, or just keep them all random colours so they're extra obvious which counters are which. Little projects that don't matter turn into big projects when you get the inspiration, so do as many little projects as possible so you can have as many ideas for your important stuff when inspiration hits

So I'm doing black armour and I tried the stippling method and then highlighting to make it look a bit nicer. Now I have to darken it all, the video I'm watching uses an oil wash but I don't have access to one. What would achieve a similar effect? I was thinking about heavily thinned down black templar contrast, or nuln oil. Would this work?

>I'm watching uses an oil wash but I don't have access to one. What would achieve a similar effect? I was thinking about heavily thinned down black templar contrast, or nuln oil. Would this work?
depends on what properties of the oil wash you are after. If it's about the surface tension you can mix acrylics with alcohol or a bit of detergent/dish soap or just use a regular ink.
If you want something you can move around and remove with a cotton swab that will not work with acrylics unless you've applied a coat of varnish and a special medium beforehand and it just chip the paint, not thin it or remove it.
If you just want to stain the surface you can use contrast paints or washes, they'll just settle a little different.

What's the pearl white you're using?

Try pressing each strip down with a toothpick as you lay it down—especially in corners like the space between the raised center ridge and little bump on the front top of the left bike. Try to avoid laying a piece down all at once and then adjusting it.

This previous talk about focusing on flaws reminded me that while I started this project solely as "relax" aka "it's not for competition, whatever I do will be good, I just want to paint" I still can only focus on flaws like how I screwed up green-yellow (applying layer after layer for coverage until it grew thick) or how, while still making progress on highlighting, Im still far from optimal results. Somehow it looks better when I look at it IRL while on phone camera it's awful. No idea why.

I really wish I could just have fun like many people here. Oh and sorry for it not being /tg/ stuff (but it's brush painted so I guess it's okay?)

It's a wraithbone primer, then Turbo Dork's Pearly Gates, followed by Mother Lode. Turbo Dork are really great paints, but they need a lot of thinning.

That basecoating is the only airbrushing I've done, and I can do it with my eyes shut as I've done so much experimenting for it . I know vallejo air is pre-thinned, so I'm not sure how much further I should thin them. I also forget what PSI is best for colours other than white, as you need a higher PSI for the whites and metallics (approx. 30PSI). I used a toothpick to get the tamiya tape down and pressed, I'm sure I just need to work on technique. I suppose the principle is the same if I'm handbrushing?

I really like that face. That came out well. I need to do a few more touch ups blending into those muscle definition lines, and I missed a spot in the underarm that needs to be pale. Looks good anon, if a bit heavy on areas that are questionable for wear and tear.. If you want to ad more realistic weathering effects to your worn down paint, the "stripes" should first be worn down to the colour below (the main colour of light grey/white), and then at sertain spots, all the way down to the bottom layer.
This will give the effect that the makers of this machine, have first painted it in the primary colour, and then added a second layer of stripes above, as one would go about these types of coloours.

To get it, I advice to do it in several layers, do the rocksalt/hairspray after a basecoat of your choise. Then ad the lighter grey colour, weather it down (and as said previously, less is sometimes more, and try to aim it at areas where it would be reasonable to get these damages and wear and tear, not just at compleatly random). Then seal it. Ad another layer of hairspray, lay down your masking tape, ad the stripes, and then repeat, to get a weathered effect of the stripes that has lost its colours to show the primary colours below, and at some parts even down to the base coat.

keep us posted anon. will be cool to see the finished product.

You can get cheap oil paints in just about any arts or craft store together with oudorless thinner.
Doing oil washes is no rocket sience, just mix up a small ammount of paint with some of that thinner, wash your model, let it set, and remove with a q-tip dipped in thinner, or a brush you dont care so much for.

>I really wish I could just have fun like many people here

Stop joking around. Painting aint all sunshine and rainbows, its a fucking drag from time to time, and the only way to say active in this hobby is to keep moving forward one brushstroke at a time!
Jokes aside, it really is a drag from time to time. I personally have a mindset that focus on routines rather than feelings. If I say "I really don't feel like painting today", I also say "but that wont matter, because my daily routine is to do this, no matter my feelings about it". Some days its easier than others, but certainly not every day....

Cameras make everything harsher, especially how, compared to IRL, this photo fails to convey how small this piece is.
Also you're your own harshest critic, it looks better than average and I only noticed the thick green yellow after you mentioned it.
Have you looked for a workaround for the coverage problem? You're far from the first to have problems with yellow. You might feel better about it if you slay that particular dragon.

Did some sculpting to spruce up my Redemptor Dreadnought. I tried to pattern it after the religious Japanese rope thing called Shimenawa. I'm not sure if I'll add more, I like how this turned out so far. I think I'll try and clean up the metal, "joints," covering the rope ends. This was my third attempt sculpting the rope out of two bits of floral wire, I found that I needed to keep my motions repetitive, keep the wire each at a 45 degree angle, otherwise the pattern would get messed up.

Exactly what you need to do depends on the face, eyes in helmets are much different than eyes on an open face. In short though, paint the face whatever colours you want it to be, highlight, wash all that. Then, when you actually want to paint the eye, come in with some thin white and apply it in the eye socket, don't sweat it if you go over the edges of the eye, you can clean it up later anyways. Then once you do like 2 thin layers of white of so to get the whites looking good, take your brush with the finest tip and get some pretty thin black on it. Carefully put a dot in the eye wherever you want the model to be looking, middle is easiest, but depending on pose to one side or the other might be preferable. Then do the other eye's pupil, being careful that the dot is in a pretty similar spot on both eyes so they don't look cross eyed. If you aren't happy with the placement the first time, just go over with white and try again. Once you are good with the pupil placement, come in and clean up any mess with an appropriate skin tone or armor color to match the rest, being careful to leave the eye as it is. Pretty hard, so just practice.

>>88102328
Going good. Definitely sand the other one before you paint it, pretty sure you said you bought two.

I have to second the Vallejo Metal Color line. I HATED using leadbelcher or any other metallic from GW (exceptt retributor armor, that one's pretty good) and would dread putting on metallics for whatever i was working on

Then someone recommended metal color. I shit you not, it was night and day. It's already thinned because it's made for airbrushing, but there's so much pigment it doesn't need more than a touch-up after the first coat in the worst circumstances. I use Exhaust Manifold as my gunmetal replacement, and Chrome instead of silver. Shit is cash.

where can I reliably get a sable brush that isn't going to show up in the mail or be frayed/crooked right out the packaging?

I've gone through 3 sable brushes from winsor and newton and raphael from amazon, Blick, and jackson's art supplies respectively. they've all come in bad condition. I don't know where to get one anymore. I feel like an idiot about to be fooled for the 4th time but my only alternative is a cheap AP super detail brush.

you need to go to an art store an inspect them in person. That's the only way to make sure you get one with a nice tip.

Go to your art store and get one there. I never buy brushes online for this reason.

drybrushing is basically destroying your brushes.
Don't do it with good ones. Use old ones or cheapo synthetics you can replace for a couple of cents.
>>
>>88117414

Your not a fool anon, you just don't understand how to deal with the a frayed brush.

Just like with beard, you don't shave because you wake up with a bad-beard-day, now do you?
You wet it, shape it, and straighten it under high heat and enjoy the rest of your day. So that is what you must do with these brushes. You repeat until you have straighten the hair on these brushes and shaped a perfect tip.

On the bottom picture, I can see the black Raphael brush has paint on the metal rim at the base of the bristles, that is never a good sign. If you get paint dry at the base of the brush, you might never get a fine tip again, and it might be ruined. But other than that, do what I told you.

That's correct; these are just the Series One Space Marine Heroes. Brother-Sergeant Cassius/Sevastus isn't even molded in a different colour! The caveat here is that four of these models (the ones that are *not* blue) were never available in the blind boxes in the United States:

-- Sergeant Cassius of the Ultramarines (blue), armed with a grav-pistol and chainsword. This model was also available in America, where he was known as "Brother-Sergeant Sevastus".
-- Brother Infernus of the Salamanders (green), armed with a flamethrower. In Japan, this model was named "Brother Calistus".
-- Brother Grimm of the Imperial Fists (yellow), armed with a heavy bolter. In Japan, this model was named "Brother Toriad".
-- Brother Frostclaw of the Space Wolves (grey), armed with a bot gun and combat knife. In Japan, this model was named Brother Aethor".
-- Brother Gabriel of the Blood Angels (red), armed with a bolt gun and auspex. In Japan, this model was named "Brother Dolor".

Ready for another surprise? The Blood Angels Heroes are also the same models as some of the heroes from Series One, just molded in red plastic!
>>
>>88122649
The other cool thing is that if you were never lucky enough to get Brother-Captain Thassarius - the rarest of the bunch here in the States, appearing in only 1:36 blind boxes - all you had to do was buy the Recon Mission expansion for the game. He's molded in light grey plastic to represent the White Scars chapter, but it's the same model.

Stupid question incoming
Getting into painting minis and a friend gave me a shit ton of old, unopened paints. Most of them are from 2012 and they're all citadel. How long do paints last? I mean I opened one or two up and they still look wet so I assume they're OK if I shake them for a few minutes.

>>
>>88122809
not bad for a start.
the silver on the knife could use some thinning and maybe 2-3 thin coats to prevent visible brush strokes and the brass on the edges would really benefit from some light drybrushing to highlight them.
>>
>>88122749
decades if they are air tight. I got an og pot of goblin green from 97' that is still good. for most older citadel paints you want to thin them with a few drops of water or acrylic thinner as they are very thick out of the pot.
>>
>>88122870
thanks for the advice
>>
>>88122895
I'm making a wet palette so that should be able to thin the paints if I understand how they work correctly.
They're all unopened save for one or two I opened so I assume they're airtight. Thanks anon.
>>
>>88122749
just shake the fuck out of them and they should still be good, if they're chalky and thick you can thin them out with water or more preferable acrylic medium. Buy some steel ball bearings and pop one or two in a pot for easier mixing.
>>
>>88122928
Didn't think of using balls to mix the paint with shaking, that sounds like a good idea. Thanks anon.

Contrast, inks, and washes are brush destroyers. They flow up into the ferrule and dry there, splaying out the bristles. Just get cheap synthetics for those. For sable brushes W&N, Raphael, Da Vinci, and Rosemary & Co are all good. Dick Blick's house brand sables are cheap and also nice when you get a good one, but the QC is lacking compared to the name brands. Only buy them in store, and ask the staff if you can test the brushes out by moistening them with a bit of water to see if they can get a sharp tip first.
>>
>>88123039
They are quite soft tho.. I find their tip too bendy.

I'm not kind to my brushes at all and have a really heavy hand (due to nerve damage, I can't tell I am being to hard on something, or burning myself), so I don't like the idea of using the fancy $120 a piece hobby brushes.

I got this Ghostface mini im painting for a diorama, and I was wondering if anyone had tips for the white mask and the real costume's glitter-robe effect. I was considering stippling on the tiniest white dots you could imagine, but maybe that's not the best idea.

>>
>>88123813

>>
>>88123709
if you want actual glitter you could try glazing thinned down metallic paint over the robe. That will leave some of the mica flakes on there and depending from which angle you look at it, it will sparkle.

If you want to do that via traditional painting i'd experiment until I have a good consistency in my paint for doing splatters. Like flicking a stiff bristled brush over a toothpick or plasting it with air from an airbrush or draggin a toothbrush across a sieve. You know how you'd paint a field of stars as a kid. That works with acrylics as well. Might just have to mask some parts of the mini off. But it will probably give you finer spots and a more even texture than trying to paint it by hand.
>>
>>88123813

GW and Army Painter whites are a little chalky imo, but should be fine for your shoulder pads. I think Vallejo is cheaper, better quality, and more easily available, at least where I am in the southeastern USA. I personally like using gw screaming skull on my templar for a warmer tone.

>I was thinking of basing the whole thing white, then apothecary white over the mask + white scar or some other bright white to go over the raised edges.
sounds like a plan. You might want to do a base layer of grey before you go to the first layer of white though. In my experience you have to do three or four layers of white over black (assuming you prime black because of the robes) before you are even getting close to even coverage. That is kind of a pain in the rear and white likes to get chalky, so look out for that.

I've seen the "Contrast over different bases" and "Contrast over metals" thing but i have an odder request

Does there exist a reference of contrast over different colored bases? Like bright blue over magenta/pink basing? Would that result in a bright blue highlight with dark purple shadows as it glazes the pink, or an unreadable mess?

I'm interested in playing around with different color theories and seeing the results, but trying to see if this has already been done.
