>>88084594Elves. They have the oldest empire in setting andare the only ones who can use magic, because of this they abhor the evolving technology of the other nations. They use their magic instead to build arcane weapons to compete with the more disealpunk devices and vehicles. Strong caste system with the god pharaoh on top and warriors and the army on the bottom.
Inhabiting both the basin of the enormous Hiero River and much of the Great Desert, the people named after the river are strong, hardy, and extremely religious. So strong is their dedication to the animalistic gods, that their nobility uses magical and necromantic powers to transmit what is treated elsewhere as a terrible curse: lycanthropy. Such rituals manage to transmit characteristics of animals to the one who wants to “Ascend”, often with dogs, cats, eagles. Not only such magical powers, the engineer-clerics of Hiero's various cults possess great knowledge of Life and Death, often on their farms using skeletal labor. However, such sorcery requires constant attention, or the creatures turn against the living. Due to the low number of sorcerers, however, it is frequent that several villages in oasis are lost in "accidents", and therefore ruins with great lost treasures are common throughout the Great Desert.Their leader is always a child, supposedly chosen by the oracles to find the purest soul among the Hiero, but the real power is in the hands of the great leaders of the Cults. Whenever the Pharaoh reaches the age of 13, he is raped, mummified, sacrificed, revived and sealed inside a Pyramid, usually in that order. For the clerics, the end of their childhood, and the loss of their purity, enhances the magical powers that protect the country.
They were the first wizards, and of course they studied spells of death and life. At the peak of the new kingdom, during Ramses II reign, a secret obituary cult managed to raise Khufu (pharaoh who built giza pyramid) from the dead. Khufu's heart had been devoured by Anubis after failing the final judgement, so his soul was denied rebirth and he had gone insane in the underworld. Khufu killed all the cultists, but not before they managed to cave-in the entrance to his tomb. Upon learning what happened, Ramses II gathered all official obituary cults and they performed a great spell that closed the connection to the underworld, and so the dead could no longer pass to the afterlife, and all magic dried up. Over a time period of 1200 or so years, the souls of the dead that could not go on, would amass into powerful supersoul beings, which became so powerful they broke the spell, went to the underworld, slayed Anubis at the final judgement, and forced themselves into the Mother Goddess Nut's womb, rebirthing themselves back into the world as the abrahamic prophets such as Jesus and Muhammad.

My players were playing a conquering army, when they marched on not!Egypt. At the gates of the capitol, they were greeted by friendly, drunken catgirls. A significant percent of the population of this city seemed to be catgirls who did little more than drink wine and flirt every day. They mingled freely with the players' soldiers, climbed in and around the siege engines, and lazed about on top of the quartermaster's stockpiles. Meanwhile the players began negotiating with the human queen. When it became clear to her the PCs would accept nothing short of unconditional surrender, she fled to the top of a pyramid and rang an enormous glass bell. Every catgirl suddenly became completely sober, and it turned out the liquor was the only thing keeping the catgirls from going into berserker rages. One player's NPC friend ended up losing an arm.
Sadists who get a kick out of locking prisoners in coffins that keep them in a sort of stasis where they're alive and don't need food or water but are aware of the passage of time. I think one of my players was getting off to it.

Golden skin, and severely diminished. They were essentially destroyed in a cataclysmic war with another race and forced to leave the surface entirely to live in floating palaces, many of which by the time the campaigns I've ran in the setting have fallen into ruin.
>>88084594I went the Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy route. Just took the canal city of Abydos, plopped it in the campaign as the home base of the Egyptian leg of the story, and rolled with it. A city where people live with beastfolk based on Egyptian animals.

>>88084594I made my non-Egyptians Dark skinned like Haitians. They include other African tropes. Similar to how people smash European "culture" into French, German, English, etc. They are the trade hub of the world. As my not-Africa continent is connected to the southern pole. Similar to real world north America.
>>88084594My setting have kami-like spirit tied to the land.Usually, people avoid the sacred magical lands inhabited by those spirits, some try to appease them with stuff, a few try to kill them which is quite hazardous even if you somehow manage to pull it off.But in antiquity not-Egyptians instead made deal with them. They build an entire civilisation, one of the earliest of mankind, around pleasing the "gods" living around the not-Nile to earn their boons. The main advantage being having the "gods" serving as intermediary to the river spirit who's too far from human mind to be directly dealt with. Other than that: avoiding disasters, fertility, that kind of stuff. There is also a not-Seth that doesn't like those arrangements and do whatever. But they also got a sweet "fake" afterlife out of it. It's a pocket dimension build by one of the god as part of their deals where people can get in spirit if they receive the right death rites. You may receive those rites if you are nobility or earn them through services in temples, the state or the military. I try to avoid having my not-Egypt just being a "land of the dead", but there are still undead, though under strict laws. Some undead are people trying to earn their place in paradise by post-death service, some are people called back from it for specific demands of the priesthood or the not-pharaoh (like calling back some not-Imhotep to teach and for advices). Other undead are just animated corpses of criminals and enemies that must "atone" their crimes through service (menial work or military). There are some rogue undead too, but undead criminals are treated with the greatest severity.
>>88084594An entire race of jackal-headed people. They consider themselves direct sons of gods Inpu and Input, and so they are quite religiously fanatical. They absolutely hate the undead and, basically, dedicate their whole life exterminating what they see as an abomination to the will of their gods.Their cities are basically massive crematoriums where they burn bodies day and night, scattering ashes around the land. Since they are basically the egyptian-styled church in a bigger, non-egyptian state, they do not need to care much about anything else, as it is provided to them so they can keep doing their job.Their mages are psychopomps, dedicated to guiding dead souls for Inpu to judge. To top it off, calling one of them a "beastman" is a grave offence, as it implies you see a mutant in them, some unholy fusion of man and animal, while they percieve their own looks as none other but the living sacred image of their gods (and they call themselves accordingly "tutankhinpu" or "tutankhinput").

>>88084594They turned themselves into demons to gain immortality.
>>88084594Mine have a hard caste system. The humans of the society are slaves in all but name. Some are born with animal heads which make up the nobility. They will take any child born this way to their noble clans, which are broken up into differing roles based on their head. Sometimes there's disagreements over what belongs to what.
>>88084594The pioneers of artifice and constructs. Their shabtis were the original golems, and what the rest of the world calls golems are just inferior copies reverse-engineered from some that were stolen.
>>88084594Much like actual Egypt, a grand and ancient nation born from the desert and one of the largest rivers in the world. It is said that the river was born when the highest mountain tore a hole in the celestial vault, right beyond the horizon, and that the gods were carried from the heavens by her flow. They do not built pyramids, but built funeral barges for the river to carry their dead to afterlife among the gods, some of them lavishly decorated and furnished. A couple generations ago, it was invaded and laid to waste. The conquerors crushed the standing armies, slaughtered most of the upper class of society, enslaved the rest and started settling their own people there. The gods have fell silent ever since, except for one.
>>88084594They are just Egyptians, with no not! bullshit. The only weird part about them is stil being kinda-sorta around, because we are playing Hollow Earth Expedition.
>>88107291In despair, some started to listen to the god in the desert, who had no temple nor priests, was given no praises or pleas. It spoke to them of ruin and dissolution, and of the dust of all the great empires of the past. It blessed them with strange boons, so that they could hasten the fall of their enemies by reducing their works to naught. A mine whoses slaves counted servants of the god would run out a collapse. The crops of a farm would wither, the soil dry up and by blown away by the wind. The stones and stone and mortar of a building would crack and erode as if it had seen a hundred summers. The greatest curse would come with the violent demise of an adept, however, as it would cause a brief outburst of enthropy. Troops defending fortifications might see their walls slowly crumble under them as they cut down cultists. It is said the desert crept closer during the first violent repressions. Since then, the empire has been trying to capture the cultists rather than kill them on the spot. First, they would take them to the ocean, far from the coast, and drown them there as there seemed to be no consequences. Since them, it have experimented with another solution, by carrying the captives to the lands of others foes of their empire and slitting their throat there, so that the curse hit enemy strongholds. That's my character. The party found her in a leaden box after ambushing an imperial convoy.
>>88107319So, they somehow ended up inside the Hollow Earth. Is there a passageway to the inside in Egypt, or did they somehow get in somewhere else?
>>88084648
>>88097139>exactly as tolkien intendedNot him, but can we get a quote on that? Also, how would you make goblins more Egyptian themed? Because a sub-race of desert goblins sounds like a cool idea, and Egypt is a good example to use as a basis.

It's not that he's black. It's that magic is race-swapping established characters who define the English ideal as envisioned by a man born in the 19th century).

They're ruled by the first lich who has recently worked his way out of a deep depression and has now decided to make his mark on the world. Horrendously powerful and a very intelligent ruler who would probably be good for the world if he managed to take over. The big thing is that he's the greatest craftsman in history and is extremely hands on in the construction of his army. Sure the magic helps but he'll take a week fussing over the paint jobs on a force of chariots and his plans stagnate to the point where the people he plans to invade can shore up defenses and prepare for his next attack. He doesn't even go all in on the whole undead army thing. Sure he uses undead, it'd be stupid not to, but no one says you have to be undead. Being a mummy is pretty cool though so some people are all for it. Most of the people go on without really being bothered because he takes so long with his plans, they even quietly trade with his enemies sometimes. He's big on the Egypt aesthetic all around, obviously. He's also territorial about it and gets pissed off if people start building pyramids or sphynxes that aren't in his name. It's one of the few things that will jostle him out of micromanaging his army.Long story short he's just a lonely guy who really likes painting his tomb kings army and is trying to get his grove back. He also likes to walk around as a giant, not that it does much for a guy who specializes in magic but it makes him feel cool. He gives speeches sometimes, they last for hours.
