Just finished my last scout. Feels good to be done with them.
How can I safely share these?
messed up my post last threadHow do (You) paint your grimdark/blanchitsu style? Regular acrylics and oil washes or just contrast?
>>87498141I have seen anons use litterbox.catbox.moe here
>>87498202I use a mix of ink, contrast, dirty down technical and gouache. I personally find both oil and enamel washes infuriating. Question: how would I transfer renaissance paintings onto the doors of a Rhino? Print them off and glue? This feels too crude but I can't think of another way?
>>87498202also they are fabulous models
Should've bought this little son of a bitch years ago. What a wonderful piece of equipment.
>>87498278>how would I transfer renaissance paintings onto the doors of a Rhino? Print them off and glue? This feels too crude but I can't think of another way?printed decals could work. If you are a good enough painter you could glaze paint over the decal to make it less "printed"
>>87498930Yeah, the comfort they add to a painting session is worth every penny. Especially if you are using a brand with dropper bottles. Just gotta worry about the painting and not a rotator cuff injury.
>>87498202Mix of contrast, inks, oils, traditional acrylics, enamels, wax paints, just about everything really. I just have fun doing lots of different techniques throughout a model.
>>87498278>Question: how would I transfer renaissance paintings onto the doors of a Rhino? Print them off and glue? This feels too crude but I can't think of another way?Just buy nail art decals off etsy, took me exactly 4 seconds to find a pack of Renaissance themed decals so you can too. Just make sure you're ordering from your country on etsy as people will fuck you on the shipping
>>87498930>>87498987really? i've always thought of it as a cheap gimmick .i'll consider it more if i'm passing by one
>>87491785painted this guy back in april/may only 2 months into the hobby cuase I thought it was a dope model. The last 3 images after the 2nd arrow are me picking it back up after leaving it unfinished months ago. I think I went pretty overboard with the agrax tho. tried to glaze for the first time but idk wtf I was doing. I want a shinier blue/purple color then the purple I had b4. think I need to drybrush and edge hihglight next.what u think?
>>87499258I had no idea something like this exists..
If I want to paint thin white lines on dark surfaces, I shouldn't thin paint too much, right? I always have problems with white and yellow, always overthinning them or making them too thick instead. Or should rather paint lines in light grey first and then apply white over it?
Finally finished my Lich's tower for January's theme. I'm pretty pleased with it.
>>87500419And of course I had to paint up a lich for it. Not the best paint job in the thread, but it's table ready and I'm happy with it, especially for the time it took.
>>87498278Our very own Lich's Laboratory printed them on decal sheets. You'd need a laser printer though. Studson Studio printed a label with printer paper soaked in diluted mod podge if you're interested in doing that.
>>87498202Now that's a big Servo Skull
>>875005554u
>>87498278>how would I transfer renaissance paintings onto the doors of a Rhino? Print them off and glue? This feels too crude but I can't think of another way?You can use Liquitex heavy gel gloss medium, or just regular old matt medium, and the waxy paper from the back of a shipping label to transfer laser prints onto just about anything. https://youtu.be/s2wDEgZcDuwI've also seen people get similar results with inkjet printers and just regular old printer paper, although it seems to require more work (scraping away residual paper.) https://youtu.be/1JBC3_ipeocIt seems like this method gives a bit more distressed look which might be beneficial to a mural on a tank. You can also buy transfer paper sheets you can print onto and use like normal decals, but they're fairly expensive and just work like regular water transfer decals. https://youtu.be/uf8KHaSAmuY
How do I paint horns? Saw some method of thinning a darker paint and striping it out from the tip of the horn but it looked like shit.
>>87498131Those look really great!
>>87500419Rad as hell
>>87498202brown then white zenithal, contrast, then enamel grime coat with airbrush, clean that up with white spirits, then do regular weathering

>>87500546Man fuck that guy, he's a tool>>87498278But for real, I just recently did this with my Chaos Knight. I used decal paper from https://www.bare-metal.com/experts-choice-decal-film.html and they have inkjet and laser printer versions of it. What you do is>design the decal in GIMP or photoshop or Word or whatever>print them out on choice of decal paper>give the front a light spritz or two of either a gloss varnish (I used Testor's rattle cans) or their specialized Liquid Decal Film (have not used so can't attest to performance) to give the decal some rigidity>make a painter's tape template of the area you want to have decal on and attach it to paper for rigidity>apply like a waterslide (although it'll still be a little more fragile)>use mark softer and setter to ensure good application, sometimes a toothpick to push it into corners>give it a coat of gloss varnish after it dries to seal it all inI hope that's in line with what you're looking to do anon
>>87501699checked but youre still a faggot for not uploading
Does space marine under-armor have to be black?
>>87501776That's totally fair, the new Fire Emblem's got me by the balls this week. I did finish a squad yesterday though, although I haven't done their bases yet. Shouldn't take very long to do them though
>>87501809black is easiest to work with but I‘m not sure if it‘s appropriate for every chapters

Scouts. Trying to make them a little unique
So since Vallejo is discontinuing brown ink what's the closest alternative for anybody who uses it?
>>87503723Pretty cool. I kind of want to see them next to a forest background.
>>87503887Wait, they are? Fuckin why?
>>87503997I don't know. Maybe because they think sepia fills the shoes of brown ink. Just guessing there.Anyways from Stahly's VGC paint review he had a picture that showed the discontinued VGC paints.
>>87504074Why would they discontinue the varnishes and the thinner? That doesn't make sense at all.
>>87504074Holy fuck. Those are almost all amazing colors.
>>87504089Only thought is that the new formulas and old arent compatible.
So trying out more just display mini stuff. Trying out the idea of having a backdrop panel. But not sure how high up looks best. What does anons think?Or just ditch the background panel altogether?
>>87503887Couldn't you use artist inks as a replacement with some water/acrylic medium to get the pigmentation/consistency you need? Sort of like these:https://youtu.be/t-gDGkS22H8https://youtu.be/6vFcRT2wOh8
>>87504074>>87504100>>87504089afaik the 'heavy' ones are just rebranded model color paints, and I would guess the same for thinner and varnishesI also would expect new whases to come back with the new formula in the future if they don't have a model color equivalent
>>87504089They're replacing their acrylic varnishes with polyurethane varnishes. I am not sure why the thinner is being replaced though. Is there any reason the thinner medium may not be compatible with polyurethane varnishes or the new acrylic paint formula?
Anyone here ever scratch build a turret before? I'm working on an Armored Train project, and I'm thinking about building an armored carriage with a machine gun turret, but I'm admittedly very inexperienced with scratch building. I'm planning on buying a flat car, and building an armored casement on top with turret if possible. If anyone can give me some tips I'd love it. Pic kinda related.
>>87503540Cry about it.
>>87504089Could mean they're not offering the little bottle ones anymore.
>>87504074>thinner mediumPlease be a goof on Stahly's part please. Should I really stock up on thinner medium? >>87504195Anon was asking for the closest kind of ink to Vallejo's brown ink as a replacement.I've seen Dr. Faust use brown ink: https://youtu.be/yAQtGlSsviE?t=266He did it for making a wash. The closest I found to it might be burnt umber, but I'm not too sure.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yzjd9l6aEI

>>87505094Might have just been a thinner coat or just by random chance the paint didn’t have as much pigment between the different blobs of paint you used, maybe it was mixed as well
>>87499589they are unnecessary, just shake your bottle

>>87505684Couldn't you just buy chestnut/van dyke brown/burnt umber ink for pens? Liquitex sells transparent burn umber 1oz/30ml jars for $9.
>>87505758>Couldn't you just buy chestnut/van dyke brown/burnt umber ink for pens?I looked at anon's post at >>87504411 with the video with the brown ink being used with the black ink and glaze medium mix. I think the burnt sienna might be closer to the Vallejo brown ink. The keyword is MIGHT. I think I saw a bit of reddishness in the brown ink a bit.The burnt sienna in question: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUgbn6ekyqwI didn't know brown ink would be popular here and when I replace my paints I like to get as close as possible.I'm going to miss brown ink too.

has anyone used teddy bear stuffing to make smoke markers? Just wondering if spraying it with watered down PVA glue will harden it? Or should I use varnish?

>>87500419Nice job, it's always amazing seeing a big project finished compared to the first draft posts.
>>87504174background panel is pretty nice, I'd pick the one on the right. If you had more on the backdrop, like a moon for example, I'd lean more into a bigger onemy question, though, is how did you do that backdrop? build yourself? premade base+backdrop?

So, I've had this issue with deciding how I want to theme my GSC army for some reason. Genuinely spent the last year hung up on how I want them painted. Finally got the idea in the shower that I'm just going to make them Mexican, and I'm gonna theme the bases in a martian western style and apply a sepia filter all over the entire base and mini to give it that look that movies have when there's scenes that take place in Mexico. >>87510364Just slapchop them all so they're not a greytide then polish them later (never).
>>87510364while a color is drying you can apply the same color to a few other models, so maybe you can paint in batches of say 5 minis every 3 hours or something
so painting vehicles for the first time, then im going to be using AK enamel wash and white spirit to do the panel linings, the tutorial I'm following recommends hitting the vehicle with gloss varnish first so the enamel wash doesn't strip the acrylic paint, anyone have any recommendations for a gloss varnish spray can that goes on really thin so that I don't clog up all the panel linings?
>>87510364sounds like you are>slow>perfectionist>not organizedif you plan smart you can probably get that number down and with practice you will be much faster. The perfectionism thing requires a therapist, so maybe just setting yourself a deadline is more cost effective in the mean time. Looking at 35+ models is different than looking at one guy in a vacuum as well of course.
>>87510364What's the rush? Remember, they will stand with you for a lifetime, if you care for them. What's 2h compared to that? And with practice it will go faster eventually.
>>87510907Any gloss varnish will go on really thin if you don't go full tard and spray hard. Get a matt as well, because when you're done you'll hit it with the matt to take down the shine. Is that the Rubicon BTR? Looks nice.

i finished up with nigger rigging little shelves so as to give myself lots of room to stick and order paints and stuff around without having to bend around the lower drawer which now has lots of room for other things (ΦωΦ)can be fun, working around pretty firm space constraints and fleshing out a hobby table
Nothing like a pint after a hard day's work killing xenos, right lads?
I know this is more of a gunpla thing but I bet some of you have opinions on it too, but do people really buy God Hand nippers? I feel like I only ever hear about them when I see people posting pictures of them completely shattered and all the responses basically boil down to "if you had used those stupidly expensive, temperamental tools in exactly the right way, they would have given you marginally better results and not broken so this is actually your fault."I bought some shitty amazon brand clippers like 4 years ago and I've never had a single issue with them, and I remove nubs with about 3 seconds of xacto knife scraping. What the fuck is the big deal about these stupid things?
>>87513297A lot of people don't paint their gunpla, so removing gates is a big deal. If you don't do it carefully or your tools are shit you leave stress marks that look out of place. For models that you paint you don't really need that kind of quality tools I guess.
>>87508230Wow - ok. Missed that. Maybe a large impassable stalagmite or water feature? Pond settled with some odd colored liquid? Field of sharp scattered crystals?A little cache of stuff related to one of your armies? Signage (Keep out!) or a mine head type thing (bucket, winch and hole)? Bedrolls and a small fire?
>>87513297They come super sharp which does mean less force needed to snip. I have a friend with them and they ARE pretty nice. But the difference in them vs like a 15-20$ tops pair isnt enough to justify how autistically costly they are. Plus like any blade Im sure with enough use will still dull. So yeah you're right, its mainly a meme
Ey, I did it! After months of not painting, I got back up on that horse again! This is tonights progress on stuff I have had standing on the shelf for ages, half started on. Now they are just a few details and some base work on the DG!
>>87513297They cut through the nubs like butter. That said, I'm fine with entry nippers and wet sanding.

Working on a conversion to represent a delaque nacht-ghul with a shiver sword but torn on whether to keep the tail or not. I'll flip the 'claw thing' so it's facing the right way but will have to chop it off and greenstuff it and not sure if it's worth the effort.
>>87509776>but afaik the game color range was meant to be 1:1 to citadels>wasNot anymore it seems. I hate that Vallejo seems to be dropping the whole alternative to Citadel now with Game Color.
Dots done. Now to paint all the details so these guys aren’t just camo blobs.
>>87505094First one is the one painted after you rinsed your brush and less paint was loaded into it. Can be avoided by either rinsing brush at the same points with every model or fixed with a hyper thinned glaze of the same contrast.

Opinions on Pro Acryl Prime?
Can I use the new Vallejo Xpress Medium with Citadel contrasts? I can't get the Citadel Medium.
>>87516743Yea nibba. Acrylic is acrylic. Also, using Citadel contrast is paypig shit but you do you.
>>87516796Cool, yeah I have a couple colors I really like. I'm also hoping I can mix the medium with pigments or normal paint to get the same contrast-type effect. We'll see.
OK, I've only used GW paints to this point. But their pink and purple options are pretty unimpressive, so now I'm forced to look at other options. How do Army Painter paints stack up? Do they work basically the same, take to thinning similarly etc? Also, they have three different paints all called Pixie Pink, all of which are pretty different shades of pink. What's up with that?
>>87517162Pretty much all brands will be thinner than GW. Army Painter in my experience is a crapshoot. I've have paint from them be good, and then bought the exact same paint and it be crap. I personally avoid Army Painter paints now because I've been burned too much in the past. Vallejo is a much better and more consistent option, and that is my workhorse brand. I've experimented with P3 and really liked their yellow.
>>87517207What about Army Painter sprays, are those OK? Please say yes because I've been comparing purples all night and this is the exact fucking purple I want and it comes in a spray no less.
Finished priming it.
>>87517321Imma soften the hurt by attaching a pic, but Army Painter sprays have been shito for me. I've either order Vallejo sprays, or painted whites and base coated the color I want.
>>87514396I think the pose would work better without the tail.
>>87517162Warpaints: slightly thicker, made for brush (though can be thinned for airbrush like any other acrylic)Warpaints Air: like the name suggests, aimed at airbrush use, they are thinner straight out of the bottlePrimer is a primer in a aerosol can. They have lots of color matched primers. There is at least a Warpaints and Warpaints Air version for most of their paints, also a primer spray can for lots of colors. I think some colors only exist in Air range and vice versa. Fey pink is a different shade of pink than Pixie Pink.
>>87517470How are AP washes then? I've checked the archives and it seems they're okay. Has that changed? If not then how about the new formula of VGC washes?
>>87517881I literally have a bottle of soft tone still in my rack within reach. It always comes out weirdly glossy. When I want something not nuln oil I prefer my custom mix of black ink and medium over using AP product. I've seen a few painting channels mount their models' heads on a little toothpick pike and then paint them there, then transfer it onto the model. What's the best way to do this? And won't a layer of primer on both the head piece and the neck spot of the model make this way harder? I got the Magus yesterday and this head is absurdly small for the detail I'm considering, and it'll be a ballache to have to keep finessing my brush behind her collar.(Also if you have any toothpick-pike videos that explain it I would appreciate it, ironically I can't find them in my history.)

>>87519818ime AP is not that bad. I've got an old batch (bought in mid 2019) and most paints are fin, it's just a couple that give me problems (such as weapon bronze, which has shit coverage). Washes are also fine, but they're a bit thicker than geedubs' so you might want to get some flow aid. Also heard that they've picked up the pace and significantly increased quality post 2020, but I can't vouch for that, as I haven't bought anything from them since my first order
>>87520707>Also heard that they've picked up the pace and significantly increased quality post 2020Different anon. Where did you hear that? I only remember seeing talk of a video they put out about how they addressed a problem of their paints separating too much by putting two mixing balls in their paints now through a video announcement.
>>87520266Is vaseline better than water?>>87520313Fuck me, that might be the case.
>>87520266>>87520967I get by with just water and eventually my saliva when I get way too focused. I've used vegetable oil and vaseline in the past as well but eventually got tired of walking to the kitchen to get sculpting fluids. Now I just keep a tiny water bottle on my desk or walk to the bathroom 10ft away since I'm a lazy sack of shit but it's 100% preference. You will have to reload your tools/sculpt with water more often since it doesn't have the permanence of oil/vaseline but if you're a mouthbreather like I am and lick your sculpting tools it doesn't taste as bad. I do wash the mini when I'm done sculpting though, just to be somewhat civilized
>>87521032if you use oil/vaseline you have to wash it too anyways, and can make it harder to get new chunks to stick to already applied putty if you go overboard
>>87520967Mix is supposed to be 60% yellow 40%blue
>>87519818>Model wash looks more like it's for weathering that to be used as GW washes are to be used for.A wash is a wash. Its up to you how you apply it and what you want to do with it.

I'm just about to call these done. I touched up what I wanted to touch up on the type 89s, and am pleased with the toned down exaust. >>8752202215mm? And yes I always want to make nice looking models and aim to improve, but at the end of the day if you are the kind of person posting in WIP, then in my experience your models look better than 90% of people showing up IRL in stores. Here’s my 90% done “gud enough” stormtroopers
>>87511784>new dark souls DLC looking swell
>>8752216428mmI've been painting for 8 years and once upon a time I had to have each and every model be 110% and that made me miserable. Nothing was finished, nothing was good enough, I started to hate painting. But I slowly learned that I am pretty good at what I do and finished models and projects make me a lot happier than hating myself and my hobby and never finishing anything. If I've got a model that I feel really needs it I will still flex and put in as much effort as possible, but for the most part, I'm happy with what my projects look like at "good enough" levels. Especially when I can pile it all together on my desk and bask in so much shit being painted and ready to play. Your lads look great by the way, I've toyed with the idea of a starwars project some day.
>>87522327Thanks. They are 3D printed by a local. Access to super cheap 3D models has totally made me more able to happily experiment, or do drybrush fuckit models. Really great that it’s becoming more popular. With tanks, I’ve found watching non-wargaming YouTubers helps. PanzerMeister and NightShift have both had really good techniques I’ve integrated. Often I’ll take what they do in dioramas and simplify it for wargame minis.
>>87517162I binned most of my AP starter set someone bought for me. Why? Because they're diluted with thinner to reach a 'budget' price-point. I've seen AP sprays clog when others don't. Just pay the extra pennies to have peace-of-mind. Go for Vallejo Model Color as the core of your selection, same price as Citadel but you get 42% more volume/value and the quality is equivalent.

has anyone here tried AP crusader skin speed paint? I'm having trouble with it, it doesn't adhere very well, its really runny, and when it dries it shades resources extremely dark while not adhereing to any raised sections, leaving them white or whatever color of primer you used. Am I using them wrong or is crusader skin just one of the bad speedpaints?
>>87524546Yeah I don't like that one, I usually opt for Guilliman Flesh and either thin it or wet blend with speed paint to get other skin tones.
I'm doing my first diorama with XPS foam, it's going to be a mine and I'm just curious what are the different coatings I can put down over the foam itself. I have mod Podge, PVA, lots of paint. Would I need to get something like plaster or drywall compound? Most of the texture will already be done so I don't want it to be anything too thick.
>>87524804if you've already textured just podge or thinned pva works fine
>>87524200you can combat staining by thinning it with a flow aid to break the tension or a medium like contrast or lahmium medium. you can also take a damp clean brush to areas you don't want to pull to suck up the excess. How do conventional artist acrylic paints hold up on minis?I stopped by an art supply store to snag a cutting mat and they didn't have Vallejo, Army Painter, or Citadel. Last two didn't surprise me.
