Since OP didn't have a TQ, tell us about the last game you won. Who'd you play, who were you against? What happened during the game?
>>
How long does it take for you to play a 2000 points game? A common complaint about gw games that I see is that it takes ages to play them compared to something like Kings of War (which achieves faster playtime by multibasing and removing player interactions nearly completely) or OPR (which plays faster due to extreme streamlining).
>>
>>87494938
Probably mattchup dependeant
>>
>>87494938
I'd say at least a few hours. If I want to get quick games in, me and my buds will usually just have a Warcry game night because a match of that is like 30 minutes to an hour at most depending on the mission and matchup.
>>
>>87494938
I took an hour doing 1k CoS vs Stormcast.
I also took two hours for 1k CoS.vs Skaven. Fuck horde players.
>>
Here's that thing anon asked for last night.

Still new to the hobby, should I varnish my finished minis by default? I heard it can have either a matt or gloss finish, but that also means you'd potentially un-gloss or un-matt parts you did so on purpose right?
>>
I'm going up against Ironjawz in a league game and I've been reading up on their abilities and this caught my eye:

Mighty Destroyers:
- If the unit is within 12" of an enemy unit and more than 3" from all enemy units, you must attempt a charge with the unit.

Does this mean that if I win priority I can shut down all their movement shenanigans by deepstriking an expendable unit 9" in front of their lines?
>>
>>87495365
research the gloss you've picked. GWs is matt, but yeah but might want to apply a glossy finish on top of that to a spell effect or something if you aren't masking the parts separately?
>>
>>87495365

I've never varnished any minis and outside of a couple metal minis I've never had paint chip off.

My experience doesn't mean varnishing is bad though, just that you don't *need* to do it.
>>
>>87495365
if you touch it you should varnish it
>>
>>87495388
I figured I'd need to use both? Stormshield the entire thing, then ardcoat afterwards for the armor and weapon parts of the mini to get back the gloss? But I dont even know if thats a thing lmao
>>87495403
Right, fair I see people say this too
>>87495406
Well I will be touching it so theres that
>>
>>87494938

Depends on the armies involved, I mostly play Stormcast and have had games ranging from 1 hour (vs Ironjawz) to 7 hours (vs gloomspite gitz)
>>
>>87495365
Varnish will protect from casual wear-and-tear and from the natural oils on your hands as you handle the miniatures. It's not strictly necessary but it's absolutely worth doing for any models you plan to play with regularly.
>>87495413
>Stormshield
>'Ardcoat
You're going to waste a lot of time varnishing everything by hand. Get yourself a rattlecan of matte varnish (I'd recommend Mr. Premium Top Coat Flat from Mr. Hobby) and then once that's dry, use a brush-applied gloss varnish to touch up the areas you want glossy. Or if your models are primarily glossy, just flip that and use a spray-on gloss varnish and a brush-on matte.

gw games are as speedy as anything else unless you're slow at parsing dice. More rolls but fewer rules and modifiers.
it's probably just that players have a bad rep for slow movement because of nitpicky tournament minded opponents or something? I see plenty of trays at my lgs for big hordes (lol as if in 3e) tho
>>
>>87495464
I dont mind taking a lot of time doing it by hand, I enjoy that.
Thing is that I hear people say that Stormshield is more like a satin varnish which means its best of both worlds? Would that alone suffice? I paint GSG mainly.
>>
>>87495375
>Mighty Destroyers
it's a CA anon, they may never use it againt you at all. You deploy in 12' they just move normaly in their turn and charge you. Bloodhoof pigs will move - charge - kill your unit and then move again due to Hunt and Crush. IJ Might as well take their chances and just MD up to 3 units to get you, at least one may have a pretty good change to get the charge to keep you from redeploy(or just kill your unit). Ironsunz can do this in YOUR turns end of charge phase due to their CA. I mean sure you can do this.

Usually between 2 and 3 hours, but it can take longer if my opponent doesn't know their army or they're playing something really hordey like Nighthaunt. I have played 2k games in one and a half hours, but that was against sons of behemat so it barely counts.

Varnish is a tool by itself.
Many people just use it to "protect" the paintjob, but I don't find that to be its main use desu, specially since I grab my minis by their bases.
I use varnish when I want every color to be on the same level. Paints have different finishes, some colors are matt, other glossy, which in results ends up looking out of place.
By varnishing , lightn reflects the same in the entire miniature, giving it a more "painted" look and less of a "dirty" look.
You can for example use mat varnish on the entire model, following by some gloss varnish to pop up some features that should be shinnier, like gems.

>like Sylvaneth with 3 new sculpts
Man, I wish some of the old microfactions had been developed as well as Sylvaneth have. Between the new Gossamids, Spide-riders, and the Lady of Vines, they got a truckload of added versatility that perfectly complemented and expanded on their preestablished playstyle. All those models also look absolutely fabulous, I think it's genuinely hard to have gripes against them. And that was all just in one box. Sylvaneth make other holdover microfactions from before the GHB (e.g. DoK, FeC, FS) look like hot fucking garbage left on the backburner in comparison.

Fantasy had an extremely high barrier to entry and general investment cost, which ultimately kneecapped its growth. AoS lower barrier to entry, comparable to 40k, but the fluff that helps get people invested is kind dogshit and came at the cost of a much more established entity.
In my opinion as someone who plays both AoS and Fantasy, AoS should have just been an expanded and properly developed version of 6ed Skirmish. A lot of what was added by AoS could have easily been added to Fantasy, either wholesale or with some tweaking.
For example, the contentious Stormcast could be made into Fantasy if they were a sort of golem or vessel created by Gelt in order to serve the empire. Some people might still take issue with that, but it's leagues better than (not)fantasy space marines created by the (not God-Emporer of Mankind) God-King Sigmar.

>No one likes AoS
Do people just collect the models for AoS? Idk if there's any lore to it

It has lore it simply shifts away from copy past history to more mythological fantasy with historical influences.

The reason why it has a bad reputation was due to the fact that the end times was garbage. Lot of popular Warhammer lore youtubers immediately vent their hatred of the end times on a setting was shallow due to fact that the AOS modeling & writing team was dump this project and was told to create something in less than x months.

It also doesn't help that a massive number of secondaries coming to the hobby through video games like Vermintide and Total war first hear about AOS in a negative way due to what i mention above autistically screeching about how AOS killed their video game universe and incorrect 1edition lore.

Right, totally in tonal opposition to warhammer where Kalgalanos the Black was the legendary father of all Dragons and all the oldest and biggest dragons aren't around anymore.

My recommendation would be to get a matte rattlecan (to protect the paintjob on metal minis or minis in general if you're not the careful type and most importatly to un-gloss any mini that might accidentaly turn out so, happened to me pretty frequently when I first got into painting) and a brush-on gloss like ardcoat to make glossy details at the end of a paintjob, like eyes, tongues, gems and such. Of course, brush on gloss goes on after the matte spray.

5+ Years = Ageing
10+ Years = Dated
15+ Years = Old
20+ Years = Ancient
25+ Years = Antediluvian
30+ Years = Primordial

That's ym personal autistic definition for models.

Skaven - Skreech Verminking/Vermin Lord
Skaven - Thanquol & Boneripper
Skaven - Warlord
Skaven - Grey Seer
Skaven - Stormfiends

Are 2015, so 6 years old. SO they are ageing.

Skaven - Warlord
Skaven - Hell Pit Abomination
Skaven - Warp Lightning Cannon/Plagueclaw Catapult
Skaven - Ikit Claw
Skaven - Tretch Craventail
Skaven - Doom-Flayer
Skaven - Warp-Grinder
2011, so dated.

Skaven - Warlord Spinetail (DT)
2010, so dated. Won't include Blood Island stuff here as it isn't available separately.

Skaven - Clanrats
Skaven - Stormvermin
Skaven - Doomwheel
Skaven - Screaming Bell/Plague Furnace
Skaven - Deathmaster Snikch
Skaven - Warlord Queek
Skaven - Skweel Gnawtooth
2009, so dated.

Skaven - Plague Monks
Skaven - Rat Ogres & Giant Rats
Skaven - Plague Lord Nurglitch
Skaven - Plague Censer Bearers
Skaven - Plague Priest
2005, so old.

Skaven - Gutter Runners
Skaven - Stormvermin
Skaven - Throt the Unclean
Skaven - Rat Swarms
Skaven - Assassins
Skaven - Ratling Gun
Skaven - Rat Ogres
Skaven - Warlock Engineer
Skaven - Giant Rats
Skaven - Screaming Bell
Skaven - Warplock Jezzails
Skaven - Night Runners
Skaven - Warlord
Skaven - Grey Seer
Skaven - Warp Lightning Cannon
Skaven - Standard Bearer
2002, so old, nearly ancient.

Skaven - Warpfire Thrower
1995, so 26 years old, Antediluvian then.

Again this is my stupid list, probably missed many. Warpfire Thrower I believe was redone in finecast but I am considering sculpts. Yes it got redone in Isle of Blood but I can't count that as you can't buy it separately

Skaven - Warlord
Skaven - Warlock Engineer
Skaven - Warpfire Thrower
Skaven - Poison Wind Mortar
Skaven - Packmaster
Skaven - Rat Ogres (2)

Was the IoB stuff.. They would be dated under my meme autism definition (2010).

>lizards: kroak, chamaleons (WC), scenery
END TIMES
>skaven: verminlord, thanquol, clawlord, grey seer, stormfiends
8TH ED
>lizards: carnosaur, bastiladon, terradons, starpriest
>skaven: hellpit, warpcannon
7TH ED
>skaven: clanrats, stormvermin, doomwheel, furnace
>lizards: stegadon
6TH ED
>lizards: skinks

then what they need to update:
>lizards: warriors, guards, kroxigors, a hunting pack muktikit, cold ones, slann, banner bearer, veteran rider, 4 other heroes
>skaven: monks, runners, rat ogres, a weapon team multikit, jezzails, globardiers, censers and 2 heroes
the lizard stuff is among the core and most important headpieces for the army, where you need to make a memelist to not touch the old models, the skaven stuff is mostly side and support units, with them having a more expansive already up to date roster to make a whole army from.

the idea that skaven need an update more is simply laughable.

>theres also etsy but thats a bit sketchier and i've seen people buy prints and get them either uncleaned or all broken and fucked up, so thats kind of a crapshoot.
its not a crapshoot because there's a review system with established professional sellers on there.

I appreciate these maps in hindsight as sort of setting equivalents to 16-17th c. european cartography
>>
>>87502418
It's understandable if it was hard to keep track of everything every step of the way.
>>
>>87502473
The skinks on the bastilladon could use a touch up.
>>
>>87502473
how are stormvermin fine but saurus guard need updating?

the stormvermin are in line with the up to date design of skaven

the temple guards aren't
>>
>>87502537
Nta but if regular saurus get updated I'd like them to just do guard too so we don't wind up in a grave guard scenario like with soulblight
>>
I can't believe Gitz are basically unchanged and still giga ass. Thanks James.
>>
>>87502589
premature but so far it does look like BoC is going to be the best army in the game by a mile and gsg got the skaven 3.0 treatment.
>>
>>87502533
even the most recent skinks still follow their same design, down to the lack of scales beyond the patch on the back and the "fused" feet claws, they don't need updating
>>
>>87502576
stormvermin certainly are not in line with the up to date skaven
they just aren't as shit as the other old stuff
look at thier hands, faces and proportions, they're somewhere between nightrunners and clanrats
that being said other shit needs an update WAY before they do, they aren't really all that bad
>>
>>87502607
how so? all the GSG rules they've shown so far have been 10x improvements over their previous rules

Because SV look crisp when TG look like shit. SV are the second least kit in need of an update after clanrats.
>>
im gonna....print a kragnos damn his face is ugly
>>
>>87502678
they do look crisp but they arent the same scale as some of the other kits, especially the newer ones.

i dont think they're horrible, they're certainly not as bad as plague monks or nightrunners, but they arent quite as good or timeless as clanrats, and they really suffer from rank and flank mono poses in a way that clanrats dont because clanrats have a ball joint shoulder which can create somewhat dynamic posing, while stormvermin remain a bit stiff

The only thing out of scale is the bombardier. It is retardely huge for some unfathomable reason. Everything else is proportionate to everything else.

stormshield is supposed to be matte, although I've never used it. I would say go on amazon and look up vallejo satin varnish or see if they have it at a local store, satin is not super glossy and not super matte, so it's an inbetween, meaning there will be some shine to it and it won't completely kill metallic paints, but it shouldn't be super glossy.

I would also just tell you to buy a satin varnish spray, liquitex or vallejo are good brands and you can also go cheap with like krylon or rustoleum, they're essentially the same thing. Painting clear liquid over models gets real boring, especially for a horde army.

>10x improvements
That's an exaggeration. Loonshrine is unchanged, squig herds bad mw flee ability still exist, bad moon effects are unchanged, hoppers are slightly faster, still have a mega ass profile. Moon still looks like it moves around, I don't see anything that's a big deal so far. Looks like slight incremental improvements.
>>
>>87503197
Stop whining you fucking baby reddit is that way
>>
>>87503174
All lizardmen and skaven are bestemet too. Even more so then Kragnos since they're just human + 1 animal like gors and not human + 3 animals like Kraggy
>>
>>87503243
the loonshrine gives moon effects in aoe regardless of position, which in itself is pretty big
>>
>>87503278
It was already doing that. The problem was the short range and its still 12".
>>
>>87503237
k
what miniature are you going for then?
>>
>>87502666
I'm sorry Loonboss can I have some of your mushrooms? It must be the heavy shit because there are literally the same rules I already have in my book. Manglers getting a worse stonehorn charge and rampage doesn't make the army good friendo.
>>
>>87503243
Incremental changes across the board is fine, it's a sign of a healthier balanced book instead of just pumping up shit because GSG have been D tier for so long. Really all I care about is that the battletome is more friendly to mixing and matching the various keywords.
>>
>>87503312
incremental changes work for 50% armies not for 30% ones.
>>
>>87503299
i think great dragon ogre from ghamak, the one with a weapon and shield, im trying to find something that fits the bcr aesthetic. Might slap thundertusk horns as shoulderguards or something like that, dont know yet im open for suggestions to push him towards bcr
>>
>>87503301
Mangers make better use of it because of their base size.
>>
>>87503323
>source: my ass
Either way the doomposting is premature. Bitch when you have the full book not because the spoiled buffs GSG aren't good enough
>>
>>87503301
If you can double +1 attack reinforced squigherd with squigboss and snufflers, release the squigs for move 10" run and charge. and then rez them on a rerolling 4+ with the subfaction that's alright.
>>
>>87503373
Source of what? Their win rate? Are you serious?
>>
>>87503373
no, he's definitely right. The optimal time to criticize a GW release is before/during the launch week to hurt sales when they release a trash update. Otherwise they just continue making profit without ever fixing whatever army is being pushed (because fags who say words like "doomposting" wasted their money already before they even find out the product is 30% winrate yet again)
>>
There's a Skaven artefact for a Master Moulder, Foulhide.
>The bearer has a Wounds characteristic of 10. In addition, at the start of your hero phase, you can heal 1 wound allocated to the bearer.
Would taking this artefact therefore disqualify him from being a Galletian Champion?
>>
>>87503408
No I'm not because you're strawmanning.
You don't have any info that says incremental changes aren't effective on sub 50% wr armies. It's just being pessimistic, so just relax bro. If we're still trash I'll be right beside you but until then find something better to do with your energy than bitching about incomplete information. Go paint some minis
>>
>>87503466
>You don't have any info that says incremental changes aren't effective on sub 50% wr armies.
Yes I do, the entire last 18 months of kruleboyz and two years of slaanesh.

>>87503434

>>
>>87503439
yes
>>
>>87503486
Okay, fine, GSG are going to be bad. I don't care anymore
>>
>>87503174
Yeah, they've kind of messed up the Beastmen 'message'. Imo they should be more about corrupting and despoiling the religions of their foes, rather than just smashing their settlements (that's destruction-territory!)
>>
>>87503486
Man I wish Kruleboyz weren't dogshit
>>
>>87503519
I'm not being absolutist, you are. My original comment was my impression was that its not a ground up redesign like most people wanted. Given that case don't expect a lot of movement when the fundamentals don't change, and in this game relatively slow, low armor, low quality, melee armies aren't good.
>>
>>87501665
What would be the specific minis for each
>>
>>87503356

>>87503395
Oh no not running and charging fucking squig herds, whatever will I do? Except be totally fine because you forgot they don't deal any damage.

Also rally on 4+ is hilarious, are you seriously implying fucking squig herds will survive a single combat? Have you ever played with these balls of shit? They literally die to other armies chaff.

2k Gargants vs 2k Orks. Managed to plant my ass on objectives before he did. His plan to teleport his units to my backline failed. In a head-on fight I managed to Survive until round 3. At that point even if I died he couldn't catch up enough points. It was my very first game.
We've replayed that match recently with his new list of Orks and I got my ass handed to me.
