if your connection is shit, don't play multiplayer games. Disconnect should be an instant loss.
>>
>>86824124
I think both com and lichess are too permissive about this. I've had players disconnect and reconnect several times throughout the game. It's very distracting. One dc and return, fine. Several? Fuck off, that should be auto loss.
>>
>>86823937
Every disconnect I've ever seen happened immediately after punishing an opponent's blunder. Rage quit = resign which means I earned that elo boost.
>>
If your opponent finds the best move here qh4 just report them.
Leads to a vicious m8 in 4 if black does the "obvious" response.

I actually agree with this hot take. At least when it comes to bullet and blitz.

I'm taking the Finegoldpill by learning the Chigorin - I already have some experience with the Veresov and the Jobava London but the extra tempo does make a real difference.. Does anyone have experience with any Chigorin opening book (Watson, Morozevich, Liew)?
>>
>>86826781
By Chigorin I assume you mean 1.d4 d5 2c4 Nc6. Not sure why you would want to play the Chigorin as it scores kinda badly online and in the mainline 1. d4 d5 2. c4 Nc6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Nf3 e6 5. Bg5 Be7 6. e3 white got everything he wanted, black responses after that being castle or h6. Never tried it myself to be clear. I made 4 accounts in total and they never bothered me about it. There's one unused, two closed and I barely play on the active one nowadays.
>>
>>86826957
That's true, Black doesnt get too much play in those e6 lines and just suffers the downsides of the Chigorin without the upsides, but I saw some interesting things after 4...dxc4 and 5...Bb4. Those moves are more in Chigorin style - seeking dynamic play rather than turtling up. I like fresh positions where I can rely on my chess fundies, and I don't mind having to be worse if it means the position is at least imbalanced.

I like playing following gambit: 1. d4 Nf6 2. g4 Nxg4 3. f3 Nf6 4. e4 (White's got big center for a pawn while Black only moves a knight. Allegedly this line was developed by actor Humphrey Bogart.)

Komodo (26.5) vs Lc0 (29.5)
Leela is back with a vengeance leading by 3 points. In this game Komodo din't have a good time and got bullied by Leela's three queens. That probably caused great psychological damage to the serpent who is having trouble to stop Leela's streak.
On other news, both Hillbilly attacks ended in a draw, Stockfish beat Leela in the superfinal in it.

I was in the mid500s, started studying, and got to high 600s and then just started losing to everyone. At first I was like, “Oh, I’m just leveling out after a hot streak,” but no, I’ve sunk back down below where I was before even. Every pajeet sees my pins and forks coming. No one blunders meaningfully. People seem to deliberately avoid the openings I’m comfortable with. I’ll have a slight advantage and suddenly someone pulls out a weird fork from like a knight they brainlessly put on the rim on like turn 1. I control the center and wedge them into their own territory, it doesn’t matter. They castle, I can’t touch them. I castle on my strong side, I get checkmated in some sketchy way. If I was paranoid I would say chess.com didn’t like some way I was behaving and just condemned me to some weird instance with only me and 3000+ bots that have names copied from the real user database.

Forks are easy to see

>They castle, I can’t touch them. I castle on my strong side, I get checkmated in some sketchy way.
Learn how to checkmate a castled king. It's pretty easy using queen, even the easiest puzzles show it. Then once you know that you'll know how to defend against it
>>
>>86832422
I bet you were making a lot of one move threats. You are taught to make threats, true, but the point of that is to 1. Improve the position of your pieces, 2. Make their pieces go to worse squares if possible, 3. Build control of space and pressure. You can play like this all game without ever having a specific tactic you'd like to achieve. The thing 700s do, A LOT, is threaten a thing, hope you miss it, flounder around without a plan if you defend it.
>>
>>86832750
Double bonus
>>
>>86832422
If you're even on material, only trade if it leads to a better position, more center control etc.
If you're up on material, always trade unless it would give your opponent way more active control
If you're down on material, never trade, but don't let your opponent think they can just attack your pieces relentlessly, so take certain trades, if it helps your mobility and control
Don't attack pieces for simple tempo unless it also develops your pieces or opens up a tactic
See forks, pins, skewers, checkmates, etc. coming, don't allow them to happen
>>
>>86832775
On the contrary, I’m generally the one who’s very patient with boxing my opponent out and kicking back random useless checks and shortsighted attacks. I force them back while taking more of the center, increasing my coverage, or just developing my pieces. Barely seems to matter. I know every perspective as to why developing your queen early or moving the same knight 30 times in a row will just make you fall behind but for some reason when opponents do it they manage to find the only holes without ever blundering, all with full minutes more on the clock than I have. I wait and wait and wait for someone to hang a piece and it just doesn’t happen

Another thing, in blitz, you can massively abuse the clock to win. I've won games where I have a single pawn left and the enemy has +20 material. You need to know when to invest time. Look at how much material is still on the board vs how much time is left. If there's 30 seconds left and barely a piece is down, just mindlessly trade or even sacrifice pieces and you'll win on time

I only play on lower time constraints when I just want a quick fix or I want to play like a firewagon round just for kicks. I’m not good playing fast even against lower rated players and yeah, I can abuse the clock but I don’t see the point, it’s basically a entirely different game. I’m actually pretty good with 30 minutes per player or more but I’m impatient so I do 10 or 15/10 which is not really in my wheelhouse. I guess for me chess is basically like going clothes shopping and everything is either too big or too small

Today's chessgames.com puzzle is rated 3 stars out of 4, or "difficult." Which makes it extra difficult, since chessgames.com puzzles are tough. It comes from a game played in 2003. Only one move wins. Can you figure it out?

I couldn't. I spent a lot of time trying to make 1.Nf4 work (note the dual threat of Nxg6+ and Ne6, which would trap the queen), but there's no good answer to ...Bxg5 2.Nxg6+ hxg6 3.Bxg6 Bxe3+. Correct is 1.Bxg6 hxg6 and THEN 2.Nf4, threatening Nxg6+ and Qf7 or Qh5. The evaluation at this point is +10. 2...Ngf6 blocks the way to f7 and defends h5. After 3.Nxg6+, white is breaking through and black will have to sacrifice too much material to avoid checkmate. Stockfish meets black's three legal moves with either Qf5, Nxe7, or Nh5, which all lead to exchanges on f6, with threats against the queen and king. If 1...Bxg5 (this is what was played in the game), 2.Bxe8 Bxe3+ 3.Qxe3 Qxe8 4.Qxe8 Rxe8 5.Nf4 and white is up material in the endgame.
>>
>>86833175
No. If you can do it, Marching the three pawns up the board is more dominating.

The dutch and birb are not that memey. They're just in the family of openings that have stronger alternatives and if your opponent knows what they're doing you just get a kind of iffy position. I play 1.b3 a lot in bullet.

King of the Hill is a chess variant. It uses the same board, the same pieces, the same rules of movement. Anyone who has a chess set can play King of the Hill. Shogi is not a chess variant, it is an entirely separate game, and you already know that. I look forward to reporting more of your posts.

Clearly he's a rating sitter of some sort so his actually average strength is likely ~2400 blitz.
And maybe he even inflated his rating illegally; I notice a lot of his top wins are against people with their accounts closed now, though he has legitimately beaten a bunch of IM's and at least 1 GM.

Try to play like Komodo. Here Bh2 with the idea of g4 is good but you have a tactict that wins material. Hard to find 4-5 move combination.
The main solutions are 28. Nc5+!! bxc5 29. bxc5 Ne7 30. Qb2 Qc6 31. Rxa6 and 28. Nc5+!! bxc5 29. bxc5 Bc7 30. c4! dxc4 31. c6+ Qxc6 32. Bf3
>>

Do you have synesthesia, anon?
>>
>>86838087
They always want the cheapest lowest effort wins they can get. This theory is proven when you play an Indian who plays a gambit line, you defend it correctly, the position is now roughly equal or a little worse for him, he resigns (disconnects) because he doesn't want to play anymore.
>>
>>86838186
I get this a lot with people who play 1.e4 e5 2.Qh5. They play the same first ten moves or so and disappear when it doesn't work out.

this is gonna sound weird maybe, but i unironically think the hardest tactic to master is the xray. not noticing xrays and the squares that are guarded through pieces , usually by bishops but not always, is so important in some openings where center gets complicated quickly and i manage to fuck it up all the time

Why would posting a chess variant in a chess thread off-topic or ban worthy?
>>
>>86838315
It's not a chess variant it doesn't use the same pieces or board.
>>
>>86838254
It would be like going to /sp/ and posting MLB scores in the cricket thread, and claiming that baseball is a cricket variant and should be included. I wonder how that would be received there. >>
>>86838296
No, I don't think that's weird at all. I can definitely see how those are a psychological blind spot for intermediate players much like backwards moves, putting your piece on a square where it can be captured, etc, It requires experience and spatial and tactical awareness and those require lots of training. Just keep playing the same opening anon, you'll get better at it one day at a time.

Breh why do you do this to yourself? When you were just shouting into the void with a little echo I understood but now everytime you shout into the void it yells back at you with a vengeance. And you even made others schizo out about shogi and now you're just as unwelcome as they are.
You probably haven't really piqued anyone's interest to a meaningful degree, you don't really get any serious replies to your updates and your posts are regularly deleted. Is this like an autism tic? Cause there's really no other reason for you to keep posting.
And this cope about shogi being a chess variant is sad if you honestly think that, but incredibly pathetic and disingenuous if you know it's bullshit. Which it is and you should know that if you're at least semi-serious about any of these two games.
>>
>>86838362
I knew someone would say this. It uses all the same pieces as chess, and then some new ones, though the board is different. And noone on Earth plays this so its not even really a game.

Shogi isn't a chess variant as it doesn't use any of the same pieces.

It's an equal position. The engine might say it's -0.1 or -0.3 or whatever but that's not really important.

In the words of a particular GM, there's only two kinds of positions, positions that are winning and positions that are not. Playability is a lot more important than arbitrary engine opening evals

No it's not. If anything it would be the other way around, because (I'm assuming) baseball is much more popular than cricket on /sp/. It would be more like if there was a baseball general, and someone posted softball or cricket news here and there. The fact is that there probably aren't enough people posting about shogi to justify a shogi general, and this chess general is the best and most appropriate place to post about it.

All the people who want to talk about other games than chess can easily make a thread about it. This is the chess general. If your thread dies maybe it's best to move on to other platforms, if you actually even care about the game you want to talk about.

Every once in a while I look at their stock, but there's just no way I'm spending $500+ on a chess set. Maybe someday...

Why is he called Mr dodgy anyways?
>>

Lighten up man, it would be good fun. More arguments should be settled through chess in this general anyway. Before the wiki spam and the schizos the complainers really were more obnoxious than the shogiposter himself.
Plus its not like theres no room for that one autist and the handful of replies he gets in this thread next to the youtuber/twitch streamer bullshit, the pajeet-tier chess thot simps, the borderline nonces & pederasts, the unironic homoposters and the absolute retards always seething about everything and looking to blame anything but themselves for their chess failures.

If it were so easy to manipulate the poll, samefagging shogitard, then why didn't you manipulate it in your favor?
Everybody responds negatively to your faggotry and the jannies delete your posts for being off-topic, so go fuck off to your own thread.

its probably cause you can start by taking on h2

why isnt taking h2 better dont you get a pawn

because getting a bishop is better than getting a pawn

Is e4 e5 as black really so fun that it's worth playing it? It scores much worse than every other response to e4, but it's super popular.
>>
>>86840638
It doesn't score much worse than every other response.
>>
>>86840638
The Sicilian is more popular than e5 but it immediately creates imbalances. Many players as black play to first equalize first and then try to win. With lines like the Berlin defense or the Russian defense, black has achieved many comfortable draws so they tend to keep playing them.
>>
>>86840638
It's fun if you get both knights out on turn 3

really? I'd never heard of them

meanwhile, can't bag the Prag
>>
>>86840638
I like it because it fights for equality from move 1.
The responses other than 1...e5 all concede space or initiative or development or some combination of those 3, which is fine if you like that style of play.

Anybody having problem quitting chess? I tried to taper down but the itch is unbearable. It's taking up too much of my free time that I achieved nothing in this year. I feel like having an addiction, stronger than browsing image boards.

Score worse amongst whom? Shitters or SuperGM? 1...e5 at the SuperGM level is a draw factory. Very sound good lines.

any king's gambit players here? what do you like to play against the falkbeer?
>>
>>86841509
exd5 and just play the main lines, getting too fancy is a good way to get murdered. Any specific line that bothers you?
>>
>>86841642
not really, I just play the main lines, but often the position dries up into some shitty endgame. I was hoping someone could recommend me lines that keep the position interesting
>>
>>86841509
Try Keres's line 1. e4 e5 2. f4 d5 3. exd5 e4 4. d3 Nf6 5. Nd2 not best but you might find it interesting.
>>
>>86842175
interesting. So Nd2 instead of Nc3 so that black can't pin you with Bb4?
>>
>>86842269
Yes that's the main point. Keeping queens on is easy in this line. https://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1076309
>>
>>86842315
based, thanks. I'll try this out. any suggestions against exf4 after dxe5?
>>
>>86842383
Main lines, if Qxd5 and then the check from e6, Be2 blocking with the bishop and castling next turn and if Nf6 then c4 c6 d4, if cxd then c5 to block the dark squared bishop. Always responding with 4. Nf3.

>>
>>86842739
recover meaning save piece?
>>
>>86842739
No, I don't think I will. I have a hard time believing there's a move to get out of this one. Best shot is trying to trap the queen somehow but even if that happens and you win the queen for free from here you're still down material.
>>
>>86842739
Nd7 Qxd7 e6?

e6 is illegal.

All I can think of is forgetting about your queen side material and desperately trying to launch an attack against white's king side.

Just play the mainline. Black declined any advantage for a more solid less sharp game so just take that and play it.

Do you guys know any weird sidelines that lead to cool unique positions? The weirder the better, but preferably somewhat sound.
Picrel is one example - it's a position in the pirc arising from 1. e4 d6 2. d4 Nf6 3. Bc4 Nxe4.

Oh is that so? Oh is that so indeed. Timer worked just fine for me.
>>
>>86843227
You're right that most rematches are ragers who totally could have beat you bro and I typically accept unless I think they actually could have beat me. Regardless a tilt game against somebody I already beat is a fully legal way to conduct myself which is beneficial for my elo. Maybe I should start aggressively trying to rematch with people I btfo in order to boost myself.

>>86843521
Does the janny just refresh this thread and ctrl-f for shogi? It's past the bump limit, why even delete this?
>>
>>86843869
I was not even posting shogi. I just said that a poll hosted on an external site isn't authoritative, and it's not even necessarily representative of all the users that browse this general.
>>
>>86843962
And I'm not the shogi poster either. I don't even know how to play shogi. But if someone posts shogi or xiangqi or Capablanca chess or whatever in the chess general, there's no reason to sperg out about it. If there's so many such posts that it becomes a problem, then great. They have enough posts that they should move to their own general thread. Otherwise it'a not a problem to see a shogi post in the chess thread. I for one like seeing pictures of shogi ladies in kimonos.
