>>86822438Thanks for starting a new thread, friend. Set of warriors here that are just a few hours removed from completion.
In the grips of a 104 fever I decided to paint up Abby and also try OSL for the first time. The results were predictably poor.
Probably a bad idea to try new stuff when you're sick and especially trying fancy lighting stuff without an airbrush.
>>86822464Looking good anon , always enjoy seeing your lizardIve got two guys from a 10 man squad done , moving onto batch painting the rest bar the sergeant as its taking forever
>>86822520it seems very grainy, is that a primer issue or something? The base rim looks physically lumpy too
>>86823008Probably, I sprayed it in 13 degree weather and the follow-up drybrush didn't fix it. Some of the rim is due to texture paste splatter I didn't clean up, the rest might just be stray pigment.
>>86818200>I tried making mold for those forearms parts yet again but it went worse than before .. with connection parts, is almost completely not casted at all. Some of parts didn't even glued together properly as evidenced on right - while flashes around suggest that it had enough material to do so. You can try pre-packing the detail parts of the mold first with a small amount of putty and then putting a blob of it in between them to weld the two halves together before you close the mold. This is most effective if you put some dimples in the detail bits so the middle layer has something to grab. You should also do this while the putty is fresh, and use a tool lubed with water to do the packing (vaseline, spit, and grease will all leave deposits that interfere with the bonding between the three layers even if you wipe them off).>Secondary question - when making curved surfaces, can I stuff the inside cavity with blue stuff first and then press them into another (mouldable) layer of BS? Or both BS parts wouldn't attach together as result?Unfortunately the oyumaru won't adhere to itself. You have to knead it back together to get rid of the seams.>using c-clamps for more pressureI genuinely haven't had a problem with finger pressure, but I also haven't ever tried to mold things with such aggressive height differences in the detailing. When I have trouble with getting even pressure from clamps, I use small blocks of wood about half an inch to an inch thick. You should cut them to the same size as the hole in your mold frame. They'll be stiff enough to not deform under the clamps. Plasticard or metal thin enough to cut without a bandsaw will just flex under the weight.>want to keep going until I hit the limits of the materialYou're already going past what most people consider the limit, Anon. Kick reality to the curb and go beyond it. ROW ROW MOTHERFUCKER.
Gonna post again. This came out pretty dark and dull so I think I'll make Harry brighter to stand out more. I'd like to try nmm again for his trim but I've never gotten it to come out right and I don't even know what colors to use in the first place.
What’s the best way to rinse mr brushes after washing them? When I use the master’s soap my brushes dry rigid even if I scrub them with my fingers.

A little progress last night.
the literal only thing holding me back from sending my ss gift is the lack of a properly sized box
How to straighten slightly bent spears?
>>86825199Depends on the plastic but in most cases this works>have misshapen bent spear>Hot water dip>straighten spear>keep holding spear>cold water dip>keep holding spear>keep holding spear>keep holding spear>finally have straight spear>look away for 30 seconds>have misshapen bent spear>repeat process
I have already painted 15 or so of these bastards and just have these remaining. I made an oopsie and misplaced my lead belchers bits. This all is for a massive meat mountain ogryn mawtribes army that was just supposed to max out wounds and be an absolute slogging grind to churn through them all. That and the plan was the use these guys to learn how to get better at painting flesh which sort of worked. Alot of the techniques though I think would be better for larger models as opposed to a human from regular 28mm scale. When I reach stupid levels of boredom after these guys are all done I plan on going and using them to learn how to paint tattoos on them aswell. I have a total of around 2,000 points of just ogryn bulls. I plan on doing the same with gnoblars next.
>>86825225Thanks for the answer, looks like it's working!(Have not looked away yet)
How can I overcome my paint buying addiction?I have far more than I could ever need yet I keep wanting more and more.
>>86825546Use it. Confront the fact that buying is a way to short circuit the satisfaction you get from actually doing the hobby thing. Most people hoard miniatures, you just picked a different way to get a quick dopamine spike.
>>86825546My guess would be either chronic stress or a lack of purpose.
>>86825870>Most people hoard miniaturesOh anon I have easily 10 years worth of miniatures for painting alreadt hoarded, I just moved onto some new obsession
>>86825886Well, there you go. Stop buying stuff and building miniatures. Finishing a project will give you infinitely more satisfaction than hoarding supplies.
Continuing number 4 of the squad today. In other news, lithuania anon, got all your stuff finally, going to send the package asap, just gotta find the right size box for it
>>86826126That's probably me. Nice to hear, good luck with that, I know it took ages for my get a good box for sending my gift.
Tonight I begin long weekend painto. Finally starting to vibe with Battletech minis

Making progress on a Malifaux crew
>>86826810i like the blue monkeyboys. Nice paintjob.
Bert from Northern Ireland, I'll be sending your Secret Santa off on Saturday hopefully.
R.L from Wroclaw, you arent getting grinched, I already have the gifts and sweets, Im just trying to find a proper box to send them in.
Very start of a coomer Tau for a mates birthday. This one is odd because when I ordered it I didn't really look at the origin country - turns out it came from fucking Ukraine. Dudes are serious about their miniatures.
KRIS from PA your SS might be a little late because my 3d printer shidded and died and I am waiting for african american friday to buy a replacement
>>86827038How else they going to buy those missiles ? Gotta keep the minis flowing to keep Ivan at bay
A gameshop near me fucked up and released the cadia stands box 2 days early. Managed to grab a box. Been working on the test mini for the company commander. I like how she is cominf out. The navy breachers and new female cadian heads aren't the worst... they could still be better. But hey, they ain't sisters of battle...
>>86827114I'm liking it anon , what you thinking for the base ?
>>86827122I actually have no clue. I have all 3d printed bases for my sisters of battle. My old guardsmen just all have shitty dirt bases. I did find some trench bases on cults3d that i might print though...
>>86827210Could probably get the same effects with some Vallego Dark mud and some lollipop sticks ?
>>86827234Yeah i easily imagine I could. I have way too much resin though and never use it for anything, so may as well. I mainly only ever print heads and bases.Might print a leman russ or a malcador. I'm aware of some really nice 1 to 1 stlsCan never have too many tanks

this year my painting motivation lasted for 9 weeks in which i mostly stripped and painted 180 models but now im all out of steam and this is all that was left

I honestly don't understand sometimes how this works - this mold went out alright (I hope so but when I investigate close up, it looks okay and tiny details seems preserved) on first try while other one constantly have air bubbles or deformations, despite applying proper and even pressure.>>86829617No need for it to be fast. How would one go about getting an aquamarine like this? I'm in love with how it looks.
>>86829786Yes I didn't suggest otherwise, ta.
What do you guys use to seal MDF terrain? I started priming some terrain with the krylon primer I usually used and am finding that MDF is super thirsty.
>>86829995I heard that deep sealer supposedly works well for this. It's an acrylic sealer used by painters over porous surfaces. Might be worth looking into. Problem with mdf is that it could warp, so maybe try it on some scrap first.
>>86829985Probably a turquoise contrast or ink glaze over silver
>>86829985try reverse image search to find who posted it originally. Looks like a wip shot, so somebody is bound to have asked about it. People always do.
Got some primer down on my flyers.
>>86828832For the longest time I've always just thought they are antennae for communications. The first plastic models with that were introduced in 1999 and there were 4 guys on a sprue with 8 normal thingies and one of the long ones with the gemstones/bumps. Since the guardians didn't have squad leaders and there was no discernible pattern how the studio army was built I don't think it matters. This is the only thing from that era that I know about that at least looks like it talks about it. Imperial scholars theroize it could be "some kind of blade, we think, although it carries no edge and is very short".Found a later reference as well gonna post that in a minute.I found two
>>86828832>>86830195this piece calls them "power pack vanes". Now what exactly that means...I don't know. Afaik vane sometimes refers to flags or propellers/rudders. So could be both ornamental or functional.
>>86828832>>86830195>>86830219and here is the one that >>86829067 mentioned
Are you supposed to do multiple coats of contrast paints? Every time I use some on a non-metallic base it always ends up super blotchy. I'm sure I'm just retarded and doing it wrong.
>>86830264you can do whatever you want, but if you finish is blotchy it sounds like you have too much on the mini that ends up pooling. You can remove the excess from your mini if you dab you brush on a piece of papertowel and then go back to soak up the pooling paint from a mini.
Sorted out some bits from my collection in preparation to start on a mechanicus saint tomorrow when the main bits come tomorrow Felt good to go through and sort them
>>86830290>but if you finish is blotchy it sounds like you have too much on the mini that ends up poolingSounds reasonable. I'll try loading less on the brush with the next one to see if that improves things. Thanks anon
>>86830079Nah, I even wrote to the guy and he didn't reply.
Could use some input, what should I do for the inside of this things mouth? I could do a yellowish orange like pumpkin pulp, but The vines go into it so I think it may be intended to be green
>>86830633A tiny jack-o-lantern
>>86830633I'd go for deep vibrant purple for contrast purposes, realism be dammed.
More progress, the skin is where I want it, mustache done, leather bits done, and did some camo on his shirt. All thats left to do is the grey parts, metallics, bit more work on the scroll, and the optics on the binoculars. Also holy shit this mini is hard to photograph, for whatever reason the camera has the worst time focusing on it. Happy Thanksgiving to those who celebrate, cheers!
>>86830820I've done that for other models but they had a more meaty texture in their mouths

Any tips for stripping? So far I just left them for a couple hours and then took a toothbrush to them, which kinda worked, but then in for another 10 minutes and went at it with a toothpick which worked better but really tedious. They are soaking in acetone, i took this pic and dumped them back in.I live in Canada so I can't buy the stuff people normally recommend
>>86831867Posture and reduction of negative space. Pose them like they are heavy. Look at the new chaos terminators for a great reference, the models carry a lot of weight on them. The next thing would be to fill in negative space to reduce sightlines through the mini, give it the illusion of volume. This tyranic war veteran is a perfect example. Not only is a god damn work of art, but I think the author posed it excelently and made him look super heavy. The bend in the knees, the buckler and grenade placements really go a long way. But underneath its just a regular primaris marine.
>>86833059Nothing strips better than acetone, but you can only use it on metal minis. But it also look like those are metal minis so I think you are doing it just right. Soak, scrub off the loose parts, put it back in to soak more. Repeat as necessary. Really those steps dont change for a different solvent. But since thos are metal you can leave them in for a week if you want. But the scrubbing away to expose new paint for the solvent to work on is the most important part. Like cleaning baked on food off the pan. Sure, you can soak it overnight. But 2 minutes of soaking and a quick scrub, repeating until done will get you a clean pan in like 10 minutes. But any scrubbing past the first 80% per soak is a waste of effort. You will spend the rest 80% of your effort getting off the last 20%.
>>86833059my best tip for stripping is to not worry if you can't get 100% of the primer out of every creviceit's not really gonna make a big difference after you reprime and paint it
>>86833059I'm in aus and have been using methylated spirits, that's been pretty good at sloughing it off metal and plastic minis and not eating the detail. Just leave em a couple hours and start scrubbing.Pewter minis were definitely easier to scrub clean, but it really depends how many layers of paint. I found some minis came clean easy and some took a good few rotations in the soup before I finally got through to their original paintjobs. There might be a bit of staining, especially plastic minis, but as long as you don't feel texture and you get it out of the important bits like small face crevasses etc you'll be fine.
>>86830820I decided to go with the purple and finished the teeth, gotta darken the purple down a ton. I think I'll maybe put some thined down white into the deepest part and blend the purple upto a magenta
>>86833100My thanks for your insightful post. It was very helpful, and the example model is on point.>>86832066That works, but I'm not sure if I'm talented to do so, in a way that's visible, and doesn't elevate the model too much. Also it's got this weird skirt-esque effect which will probably obscure a fair bit of the base anyway.
Ausbros. How the fuck do you paint in the heat? Watching painting tutorials is like looking into an alternate reality. My paint acts nothing like it does for them, even with a wet palette any thinned paint dries out incredibly quickly and the worst thing is paint drying on the tip of my brush every 20 seconds.Should i buy a humidifier or something?

Anyone tried using any of the culture hustle paints for minis before? im sick of layering 30 fucking coats of white to still have the base coat show through, and i've heard good things about their white acrylics, and i've seen some pretty neat things done with the LIT powders, but nothing on a mini scale.anyone have experience with their paints at smaller scales?

>>86834753Don't be so cruel, I know I can do it if I finally get it. >>86822520what a fucking mess
what gives oldhammer 'that' characteristic look?I want to replicate it
>>86835329>>86835391Post yours, dork>>86835396One of the major differences between then and now is how the miniatures are made. Those were all hand-sculpted in epoxy clay and then molded into rubber discs. Shapes that are produced smooth and crisp in CAD injection molds now tended to be a little rougher back then. Some call is "organic" or "charming," others call it "a blobby lead mess." Take the face of the catapult. There are irregularities unique to each side of the face, whereas in a CAD/injection mold, the face could be deliberately and perfectly mirrored. Same goes for the front-left Ork's shoulder pads. They'd likely be flatter and sharper if made today, whereas here they look like... old tires. Pic is a good, if extreme, example
>>86835551I'm sure there's a huge difference in the painting styles, too, but I don't know enough about that to say.>t. mold-maker

Terrain-Anons, how would you solve this:I want to place some dead bodies onto my terrain, so it looks more like an active battlefield and more grim. Pic related.Would you integrate them into bigger pieces of terrain? (risking that the space to place actual miniatures on buildings etc gets limited)Or would you base each corpse individually, making pieces of scatter terrain with corpses to be placed on the board individually?
LB from Ohio I am in your walls LB from Ohio I am in your walls LB from Ohio I am in your walls
>>86835614I always used them as seperate pieces and place them whenever there is casualties, so even though models are being taken off the table it doesnt turn into a ghost town. That said, it might not work as well in Warhammer since the casualties would be drastically different looking, and the opponent might not even have models for it, so intergrating it into the terrain might be best there if you dont want to be the only one adding casualty markers around the table.
>>86835614I'd just use them as terrain. Build barricades with bodies. Pile them on top of sandbags etc.
>>86835630saves you the shipping costs, nice
>>86835067The light may not reflect the way it should. Infinity has really strange and small shapes so that could be the issue. Lots of elements interacting. I generally just try to do two light sources, depending on the side you are looking from.
>>86835557Prime from canUse brush onlyUse a limited number of coloursUse the basecoat, wash, layer, highlight methodKeep the bases flat and simpleUse old modelsPick the colours to match the old vibe- the browns were washed out, the vibrant colours were usually very vibrantThe colours have a certain vibe to them, current GW colours are probably the closest, Vallejo or others produce a different finish, hue, vibeWash most of the areas with brown or black, and wash the details with colorful inks/washesUse regular sand for basing Don't be too neat as back then people were notDon't use any weird products like grime, oils, airbrush, make up brushes, etc. Some ideas
>>86835903Probably the weirdest feedback I'll ever give but here goes.Stop centering your patterns on the fabric. It looks too human made to be realistic. Unless it's a specific piece of fabric designed to show the logo like a Cape its never going to line up that perfect. The fabric goes all over her so the pattern shouldn't be perfectly aligned like the side of her head and her shoulder. It's a great point job but it feels fake because it's too perfect in places. The pattern being slightly off center for a perfect framing feels way more natural.
Finally got some Perry plastics. Gonna play some lion rampant with them. These little troopaloops are going to some moustache twisting villainous frenchmen. >>86826810Very nice paints, but man Malifaux is such turbo weebshit. It's the goddamn weebiest.>>86827349Dude, please put some weathering on your tanks. Right now they have that "under the sea" look you get from quick airbrushed camo.>>86835067I think its way too much black or, if they're supposed to be metallic black the highlights are way too fat. Either way the application is sloppy. They look like a budget 90's cartoon. Not at all metallic.>>86835396Hand sculpted models, an absence of non-self referential edge, and layering over a black undercoat. Washes are used very sparingly and mainly on metallics. Go dig up some early painting guides.
>>86835957You're totally missing what makes oldhammer paintjobs.Simple, bold colours used in dynamic ways. Dwarves have stripey trousers and Orks have checks. Space marines have different colour helmets to their bodies or lines down their nose.Colours aren't washed out, they're balanced where the painter wants high complexity with simple highlighting and shading. Which is the polar opposite of the never ending NMM wankfest we've been in for the last 20 years. Banners are super complex and painting like a tiny real painting giving the hyper complex nect to the simple clean look else where. To get the old look you have to see every model as a pirate. Does he have stripey trousers? A dodgy waste coat? Why does he have a bendy spear? Who knows, its the pirate life yarrrr!
>>86836064Am I wrong in saying that for some old fashion paintjobs doing some oil washing rather then acrlics or out right using oils for bright colors helps a bit?
How are my highlight placements? Feel like Im gonna redo at least the raised thigh. Early sketch here, I know nothing is smooth yet
>>86836117Enamels and oils were used regularly back then. Acrylics were shit and barely covered so you relied on humbrel enamels and if you could paint outside of models, you had an artists background in oils or exposure to them. That fell off as GW went fully self contained and tried to push only their paints. Oil washes back then weren't like people use then today. They were pin washes in small areas, not cover everything and wipe it off. You can find exceptions like John Blache but trying to discuss his painting styles impossible because youtubers have flanderized it. His original style is the same dynamic high contrast with selective use of very bright reds to his dark and bone bases. Today its I covered a model in nuln oil so it's the same.
>>86834391If you're in the US there are a bunch of smaller suppliers for neodymium magnets. Last time I needed some I bought from totalelement but they're not the only ones selling.
>>86836117Yes. In the warhammer world oil washing wasn't really a day to day thing and oil paints weren't really used outside of competition entries and then only really by people with an art or scale modelling background. Enamel paints existed but were and still are a pain in the ass to use and clean up for. Dipping was a thing. Day to day paintjobs were typically careful layering with acrylics. The black outlines were either from the original black primer or from careful blacklining.Everything was layered as washes work off the detail in the model. Back then they tended to be diluted acrylics and used mainly for chainmail (black) and fur (brown).Handmade sculpts tended more towards simpler shapes which encouraged/demanded freehand. You wouldn't rely on the sculpt as much. You would freehand banners (of course) but also emblems on shields, stripes and checks on clothes, even wood patterns on spear hafts and bows. All layered up from dark to light, not basecoated then washed.
>>86836180Yes, I assumed as much having stripped old models of the era that were poorly painted, I granted myself am fond of the style and sorta do it myself be it lazy/noob method of it (bright colors, usually acrilics, sometimes doing highlights, strong contrast and oil washing of some areas to make the color stand out more).

Did this little dude, tried konverting some diggas but failed with most, this one is only half decent looking, gonna paint him up and run him in my band of weird mutants and monsters and madmen, say it's a barbarian they found in some cave and got him to join.
Anyone made a diy booth? I want one bad but don't really wanna spend $100 for one. Or anyone found a better deal than $100 for one?
>>86836854legend says you can build one from cardboard boxes and computer fans. Nobody knows for sure.Of course I'm just poking fun, but google around there are almost certainly a bunch of DIY guides.

>>86836961anon, you can put the hose wherever you want. Like out the window for example.
>>86836961You haven't experienced painting until you've done it while high on fumes
>>86836973The stock photo very clearly states the correct position, and that would be blowing the fumes right at your face.

Lithuaniabro, your package has been sent!
Bradford anon, you've not been grinched - I will be sending your gift out next week.
Working on the fruit of my first 3d print.
Does this colour scheme work?
>>86837288explain how you did that yellow squig right now
>>86836180Are enamel and oil paints just two words for the same thing?
>>86836905I would not use a computer fan, you want something with much higher flow rate. You can also just buy one for like $80 with a good fan, filter holder, and built in light.

>>86838456The operator's face looks too good, derp him up to match the rest.
>>86838472Also I bring a new batch of minis to be identified. They have the year 1987 and my guess is they belong to some kind of standalone game, they've have also the class name engraved (cleric, fighter, wizard, alchemist, halfing...)
>>86838105love the thighhighs
>>86837093>but primer fumes give you the strength of a lionIf I were to huff primer and liquid cement fumes would I be as strong as the Emperor?

I guess I have to give up after all. No idea how could I actually improve this anymore. Pressure is strong and even both during mold forming and casting process, rigid casting box keep the mold in shape and prevents deformations but I always ends up with air bubbles or BS is not properly replicating tiniest details and I can properly see the flaws only the next day after Miliput dries up. Paradoxaly, when I used pure Green Stuff, it had better shape reproduction than Miliput but that could also be attributed to lucky casting.I'm sorry.
>>86838456>>86838472They are nice, Anon.>>86838522The look like pre-slotta GW stuff, only they have slottas.

>let's try to do the stripes freehand, how hard can it be?
>>86838522GW did make AD&D minis at that time so they could be dungeons and dragons minis. I didn't recognize any of them from what I looked at though.
>>86839259You did alright anon. If I could paint checker patterns well consistently I would put them on all my orks. I still have a whole british Airborne army to paint that Ive been avoiding because it means I have to paint camo.

>>86839562Arm part from certain Bandai model kit. Movable so I need to cast it apart. At this point I'm tempted with doing crude replacement from plaplate but it will never look "organic" that way.

There should be a word for the pure joy of possessing miniature tanks.Especially the Mammoth Tanks.
Lmfao damn you guys are roasting me goodI honestly dont think they're that bad. Yeah the paint is a little thick and theyre not perfect but the squad probably only took 7 hours tops and they look good on the table
>>86835067that fucker refuses to polish his scratched up chrome
>>86840140Not trying to roast you, we are trying to give you constructive criticism. Or I am anywayWhy post your models here if you are so sensitive to people talking giving you crit.

>>86840140They're alright, though I agree with other anon that slapping a metallic on the hoses and pinwashing the armor would do a lot.
>>86840107Sharp tipped brushes and using the base color to scratch some yellow onto the black (or vice versa).
>>86840140For a 7 hour paint job , yeah they're ok , but they arnt finished if the guns are not metal , its just laziness not painting them at this point
>>86839637That was me last month. The price to pay for being too impatient.
Best way to paint dried blood without it looking so dark its no longer recognizable as blood? I took a break from painting minis and want to come back and redo my Slaanesh CSM army scheme going forward.
Very Early WIP on my dark apostle , loving the sculpt but my god is it fiddly to paint
>>86829026Glad to read you have fun with your space dorfs.
I want a new pair of cutters/nippers. Old one is probably shit - it came from a beginner citadel set, they aren't even the ones that are sold separately by gw. They chew through plastic rather than cut it.What are my options? I understand a lot of people like godhand and tamiya. Seen models ranging from 30 bucks to a hundred.
>>86841589Tamiya is nice. I can't see Godhand having enough benefit to justify its cost.
CF from Georgia, your package landed. Waiting to open until I can get my package out later this week! (I feel weird opening before I give back, but very excited!)
>>86841721Thanks for the advice. Any particular model to pick?
NR from BC I have everything ready finally! Will be sending the parcel in a day or two. Delivery shouldn't take long.
>>86841769Mine are Tamiya 74123. They are a little more narrow than the other model. Makes it a little easier to get into small areas. Just make sure you don't use them on really thick pieces like chunks of resin. Keep your old ones for that.
When it comes to varnishes, is there any difference between brands like Vallejo and craft store ones? The Vallejo satin varnish is quite expensive, but I'm willing to go for it if the end result is noticeably different
>>86842100Just get Liquitex. Equal or superior product for much less money.
>>86838785Ok. Do you have any clay? Just cheap air dry clay? You can put your piece in that, the smooth side and make it a perfect fit right up to the edges. Scrape away the clay so you get the perfect looking potential mold. Except for a few guide pits it should be nice and smooth with parts of the model sticking up but the edges flush with the clay bed. Put it in your freezer for a few minutes while you warm up the BS. Freeze it enough so the clay is not so soft. Then press the blue stuff onto that, you don't need to use a lot of force, just be mindful of how the BS is going over the part. No gaps and no bubbles. Peel it off when it cools and check if its all good. Repeat until you get it right. Clean of the BS each time. Remove the parts from the clay and clean them off, it's clay it washes off easy. Then insert them into the BS mold you just made. Press a new BS onto that mold half with the parts in it to finish the 2 part process. If you do it right you should end up with perfect casts. You can fill one mold half with putty and the other half with putty then put them together if you want, and that can make it easier to ward off putty spill over.If that doesn't work for you, you'll have to find a different method, like letting someone else do it for you. Good luck.
All my bases end up being gravel and/or grass. I need some inspiration.
>>86843677try some tree bark
Just started gluing together my warboss and 2 nobz that I'm going to build as a mek and a painboy. The warboss will be my first character and the rest of the nobz box is only the 2nd I've ever done, eager to test my skills and see what I've learned from my first box of boyz
>>86843776It's good practice to scrape off the mold lines before you assemble the model. and drill out the barrel hole
>>86843796I have a hand drill set coming in the mail, but I thought it was something I could do at any time. If it's good practice to do it before assembly I will in the future. As for the mold lines, I'll file those down in the morning
>>86843828Drilling can be dangerous to your fingertips. It's easier to hold and drill a piece if you don't have to worry about it breaking off the model. Same goes for mold lines. I usually clip everything off the sprue into a pile and spend an hour or so cleaning every single fucking part. I hate doing it but it makes a better mini.
>>86843796I can forgive anyone not doing the moldlines on black reach orks. They are so offset you essentially have to resculpt the area, even the plastic is more difficult to work with.
Does anyone in here keeps a notebook (literally or digital) about the paint they use? With notes about individual paints, like "covers well", "rather thick" and so on?
>>86844363Yeah I write down recipes/swatches in a notebook, helps when you have far too many paints
Are there any continental EU stores that sell single sprues from North Star / Warlord / WGA kits? I can only find UK ones.
>>86844496I'd happily forward them to you if you need to order to a UK address. I'm sure Santa can vouch for me being trustworthy
Anyone got hot tips on quickly improving these bases? What color I could drybrush them which would retain the swampy look for example.
>>86844496Have you checked ebay? I think there is at least one professional seller from France there who specializes on selling single sprues. But for sure, the vast majority of offers comes from UK.
>>86844613some dark-ish green, followed up by a green-grey maybe? are you going to add some tufts?
>>86844791Yeah I am, thanks for the advice.
>>86835551You can have very sharply detailed figures using hand-sculpting and metal-casting. The sculpting medium they were using at the time was not as good as what is available now, and I presume the same can be said for the mold material. Sculptors have also refined their techniques in the time since gaming miniatures were first being made.
>>86827945The rogue trader era paints last a literal lifetime. Every subsequent formulation has followed the modern trend of designed obsolescence, bringing the life span lower and lower with each release. You could store the old paints on the surface of the sun and they would be fine to use the next day. The new ones can be kept in a specially designed, temperature controlled air sealed vibration platform and they will still dry up. Amazing really.
>>86844791There, my Gloomspite Warband is all based and tufted, thanks again anon.
CP from Eastbourne, Royal Mail have your parcel (forgot about the bloody strikes ) , Santa has your tracking number , hope the gift gets there quicky and you can enjoy it soon !
Did a little experimenting with freehand on this guy.
>>86843637Interesting method. I don't have clay but will try to grab some soon. Thanks a lot, you sure put a lot of time into my case.
>>86845021Looks real good anon.
>>86831687>>86839497finished up my inquisitor bits box party, thoughts? anyone think of a good name for my inquisitor? im getting strong fire flower luigi vibes
>>86844899Nice looking gang.
Went to prime my csm with some rust o Leum shit and completely fucked it upIt's been more than an hour and primer is still wetAnd details are slightly clogged up(could be just because it's still wet though) should I just say fuck it and order some primer I can handpaint with?
>>86845487If its still wet, you should be able to strip it with IPA and try again.>and order some primer I can handpaint with?Nothing wrong with that.
>>86845487Will post pictures later so the anons here can explain to me how exactly I fucked up
>>86845523I don't think I have any ipa lying around
>>86845576Then you should get some, along with that primer. Never hurts to have it.
>>86839585>>86839623>>86839781if you're having trouble getting a colour to work over your red basecoat, particularly metallics, just put down before it a colour which takes fewer coats to get a solid coverage, then apply the tricky coloureg:>put black or dark grey/blue before your steel/silver>put dark skin/leather/red-brown before gold>pale khaki/ivory/cream/grey below whiteThen you can afford to have less than 100% coverage with the colour you're aiming for and it will look more natural still
Tried to stipple on a boney looking texture for the armour on this guy. Didn't turn out good, also the whole thing looks grainy.I did highlight the metal but for some reason it doesn't show up under the camera at all.Didn't bother finishing the weapon btw.
>Buy any gold paint>It applies like glitter waterWhy?
>>86845993Gold paint is no different from any other metallic. If you're getting poor coverage it's separated, you watered it down, or you're not buying *any* gold paint but rather some shit like Turbo Dork.
Any suggestion for how to do greenish metallics? Green metallic seems to be rare out of the jar, so I guess I should tint it somehow.
>>86822438Oakville anon, your ss package has been shipped.
Can Vallejo thick mud be used both as a basing material and to gunk up vehicle tracks? It looks like the 'industrial' colour would work for urban ruin basing.
>>86846146I did some metallic christmas baubles for a model and just used a green contrast paint over leadbelcher and it looked wonderful.I'd post pics but it's someones giftYou can also just mix green paint into a silver and get a green metallic
>>86846146every metallic paint is just silver flakes + pigments to give it color. I'd suggest using inks for the color as that will give you the strongest colors. You can use any silver you want or use something like vallejo's metallic medium which is just a very bright silver paint intended to be mixed with other colors.
>>86846211it's gooey anon you can apply it to any surface you want to, really, and it makes visual sense to have your basing material modelled onto your tank tracks anyways
>>86845993shake it better
>>86846146Vallejo Mecha has metallic greenOr you paint on silver, and use some green contrast/speedpaint/ink or wash on top of it.Or you mix metallic paint and green paint and apply this mix directly.
>>86844899love these gits
Is anyone able to vouch for the quality of Black Market Miniatures? They're selling Brother Craig AKA Johnny recasts now.
>>86844363My BRAIN is my notebook.I forget the paint recipes I've used all the damn time, but I usually get pretty close in replicating it.
>>86846146This is Tamiya clear red over silver, I think the clear green is similar but these paints are alcohol based.
>>86836048The heck does "under the sea" look mean?

>>86846637I’m gonna guess he means how light shines through the ripples and waves and you get streaks of light on the sand under the water. It doesn’t look that bad anon don’t worry. Maybe another color mixed in would give it more of a camp vibe
Vallejo Premium Color Gunmetal or Vallejo Metal Color Gunmetal Grey?
>>86846747Yeah realistically i need to add some more colour into it. I have a good idea of what to do. But yeah that other anons criticism of "under the sea" is a bizarre thing ive never heard...
>>86846714straight up heartwarming
>>86846764Vallejo metal color sets the standards for metallic paints. And it raises the bar very high anon.
>>86846764Always metal color, except for gold and even that is fine if you're using it for that natural gold recipe.
>>86846849You dont even need a gold colourhttps://www.youtube.com/shorts/Sb_wOUO4qDw

>>86846870I don't like it
Continuing from my last post of fucking up priming my csmAnyone have any experience with hand brushing Vallejo acrylic polyurethane primer? I'd rather not be a slave to humidity conditions all winter
Well I finished those 4 X-men I had. Now I gotta wait until the 9th to get more.I don’t like highlighting black hair, but I did find a caucasian skintone I like.
Do you consider a regular miniature painter a craftsman, or an artist?Or do you hold a double standard where some are artists and others like those following a recipe are craftsman?
am i giving myself brain damage by using spraycan primer indoors?
>>86847201Artists to be honest? You still doing thing yourself even if with a recipe, since minor things will always be different when it comes to painting.
>>86847275Yes, I know weather is shit, but just go to the balcony, or go outside when weather is calmer, spray, put minis in a box and then shove them under the sink while they dry.
>>86847201I don’t think the two terms are mutually exclusive.in my opinion a craftsman builds something physical, while an artist creates something that is attempting to be aesthetically pleasing. If you just build minis and paint them you may be an artist but I wouldn’t say you’re a craftsman. If you were to build your own model and then paint it you could be considered both.
>>86846847>>86846849Is it really worth paying more for a smaller bottle if it will primarily be used as a basecoat?
>>86847361NTA but yes. VMC is the best acrylic metal paint you can buy and it's not even close.
>>86847048I dont get it. For OOP miniatures, that site seems to be a good alternative. But why the fuck would i pay more for a resin recast of a current GW plastic set than GW directly is charging for it?
>>86847386Okay Anon, i'll trust you. I feel Vallejo has too many paint lines going on.
>>86847275Using it indoors will increase your mental fortitudeIf you can handle the spray fumes then you can handle anything life can throw at you
So when it comes to preparing resin models, should I give them a wash in warm water with dish soap? And then brush them with a toothbrush? Wouldn't warm water fuck up the consistency of resin and result in me fucking up the miniatures with the brush?
Charlottetown anon here, I've just moved and have yet to set up my mailbox yet, should be up in the next few days. If Canada Post fucks me and sends in back to you, let me know I'll cover the cost to reship it. Also here's some BB guys I finished
Well, waiting for box to get to my match and it's seem to be stuck in a sorting center, here is hoping it goes though.
>>86847959This looks okay, still dont know why you are limiting yourself to so few colours though

Not a fan of the new Lord Solar on horseback so im thinking of possible conversions? What do y'all think of using the command pulpit from this SoB kit as a base.Plan would be to removed the SoB iconography and flamers and stick an IG officer (maybe the creed model) in the pulpit.Might also add treads to it so it (like the treads from the thunderfire cannon.)What else could I does as well? Add some radios and such? The holomap from the genestealler nexus could work but im worried its too big.

>>86847817depends on the resin for the temperature.Old Finecast shite would start getting bendy at like 40°C, other you need more heat, so regular warm hand washing water would be fine. Also it really depends on if and how much mould release gunk is on them as to how much of a paint to clean up they are. Forgeworld practically pisses that stuff onto their shit like it was going out of style, where as I've known some people who get away with just not bothering with any.
>>86847497This might be coming out of my ass and I don't want to stray into off-topic politics but from what I've been given to understand the guy behind that site went full Z-tard and jacked his prices. Seems odd to cut off your own nose to spite westeners looking for miniatures on the cheap but that's what I've heard.
>>86847386>>86846849>>86846847God damn, I looked up reviews and I must have it. (77.712 Steel over gloss and matte black)I do most of my black priming with black gesso which dries to an almost satin sheen, i'll have to make sure the metal doesn't end up too bright.
>>86846714Blessed post. I'm very happy for you anon.
What do you guys write to your SS mates about?
>>86849554Details about the gifts and food, hope he was a good boy, santa orc drawings.
>>86849554Insult and mock them with banter. If they play elves you call them a fag, if they play Orcs you call them a retard, if they play space marines you grinch them. You should be putting some of your personality into the package. Like the guy who included a condom in the card, have fun with it and do something outlandish.
>>86849554I generally just copy passages from whatever book I'm reading and then end it by wishing anon love and a merry christmas
Someone make a new thread.
>>86849554Depends on the parcel. One year I wrote it as a supply package sent from a Sister of Battle to a Guardsman. This year it will be Ork to Ork communication.
>>86849960Why not you, anon?
I'm retarded and don't know how to paint.
>>86849209Idk about anything recent but his prices have always been high and not worth buying for regular stuff.
>>86849748For me it's the guy that put it in the adult diaper box
