Anyone know of any good sources of oldhammer style alternate dwarf miniatures? i like my dwarfs with big beards and i cannot lie. I ordered some from eoeorbis 11 days ago but i know its gonna be a lot longer a wait and the itch to paint new dwarfs can't wait much longer.

Forgot last thread was dead, woops >In earlier editions, Independent characters were meant to join and lead squads, allowing that squad to benefit from their Leadership value and possibly some nifty wargear they might be carrying. The designers envisioned them getting stuck in and leading from the front, resulting in epic showdowns with their minions swirling around them... but it rarely worked that way. When the Second Edition Eldar codex came out, and suddenly characters with a Ballistics Skill of 7 started toting around the equivalent of heavy weapons (the Maugetar, Firepike, Brightlance, etc.), they even instituted special rules to tone down the obvious strategy of having your characters sit in the back and snipe the most interesting thing still standing in the opposing army.First of all, thanks for answering!Didn't they have a similar system back then where you can't target a character if he's in a unit? That's what I remember from fifth. Nowadays it's literally if they're anywhere near a grunt unit.So my best bet is to think of what I want to do with my characters, and use them that way? So, stick my captain with a squad that really needs to land those hits, then he can hoof it to another if they need him? Also, Chaplain in Termie Armour accompanying Deathwing seems like a no brainer for that *teleports behind you and smacks you off the board* manuever.I suppose just stacking all your characters into one death ball and bumrushing up the board is good in a few situations I guess as well, since it's such overwhelming force in such a small area you can just punch right through.
>>85405946>First of all, thanks for answering! You're welcome.>Didn't they have a similar system back then where you can't target a character if he's in a unit? That's what I remember from fifth. You couldn't shoot him unless you dropped a blast marker or laid a template over the unit he was in and happened to get everybody. If you were in base-to-base contact, though, which was the indicator that melee was taking place (as opposed to the "Engagement Range" rule we use now), a model in base contact with a character could throw all of his attacks at that character even if he were also in base-to-base contact with members of an enemy squad.>Nowadays it's literally if they're anywhere near a grunt unit. The "Look out, sir!" rule is there specifically because characters no longer join units like they did in earlier editions. If they were part of a squad, it would be up to the defending player to decide which models had gotten hit, not the shooter. There are some units in the current rules that can ignore this, though; they usually represent some kind of sniper or marksman role like Space Marine Eliminators.>So my best bet is to think of what I want to do with my characters, and use them that way? So, stick my captain with a squad that really needs to land those hits, then he can hoof it to another if they need him? Also, Chaplain in Termie Armour accompanying Deathwing seems like a no brainer for that *teleports behind you and smacks you off the board* manuever. For Space Marines, it was almost always advantageous to have a character join a squad, even if it was just so they could all ride in the same tank.>I suppose just stacking all your characters into one death ball and bumrushing up the board is good in a few situations I guess as well, since it's such overwhelming force in such a small area you can just punch right through. Are you using Oldhammer-style rules, though? Be careful your opponent does start dropping blast markers or templates on them!
>>85406126>You couldn't shoot him unless you dropped a blast marker or laid a template over the unit he was in and happened to get everybody.GW even introduced rules later that allowed the defending player to reposition a blast marker placed by the opponent provided it covered the same number of models, just to prevent some Imperial Guard wise-ass from aiming at all the character models with his Basilisk's Strength 9 Earthshaker Cannon.

>>85417565I've always wondered, what are those little slots in the titan bases?
>>85427350>I've always wondered, what are those little slots in the titan bases?Titans and other massive super-heavy vehicles like the Capitol Imperialis are protected by large shimmering barriers called Void Shields. Void Shields can absorb a certain amount of energy before they flicker and disperse, leaving the Titan vulnerable - which is why most Titans have several, layered over each other like the skin of an onion. When each shield gets knocked down, the crew try to restore it by re-routing power directly from the plasma reactor, engaging emergency cooling systems, etc.In the game, this is represented by each Titan starting the battle with its maximum number of Void Shields up, and that they may get knocked down by enemy fire. Afterward, the Titan crew may attempt to restore them; you get to roll for this, modified by things like stopping the Titan and using energy from the motive systems to give you a bonus, and so on.The base of the old Titan models is hollow, sandwiched together with a thin cardstock dial in between that has numbers on it. There's a "window" cut out of the base that shows you the Titan's current number of operating Void Shields, and you rotate the dial to increase or decrease the number which appears in the window.

>>85426384>Is there a rule in WF you'd say's more lore flavorful than Orc Animosity?Animosity just means they're pretty much the only army with mandatory command and control problems which always seemed odd to me given the other big candidates for it (chaos, skaven) just kinda bypass that stuff. For me though my favourite was unfortunately post-oldhammer era, in being the Empire's detachment system, which actually made it entirely possible to use a balanced army and be successful with it, overcoming the mediocrity of their infantry stats through teamwork. Given how the Empire in the 4/5th editions had been pretty much driven to rely on all it's specialist troops (Dwarfs, Halflings, Ogres, Knights) and warmachines instead of regular people, it was quite nice to have an effective mundane army to contrast the more fantastical stuff.

Inspired by Rick Priestly talking about how some of the original intention with 40k was to just sell a bunch of guns and such to convert fantasy figures with as "sci-fi doesn't sell" was the wisdom of the time (partly thanks to Laserburn not doing well) the following idea struck me: Getting a bunch of older style fantasy barbarians and knights, chaos-y particularly (Knightmare? >>85443344Yes, thank you.
>>85443344It's interesting these don't turn up more. As in I don't think I've even seen them before in pdf collections of the old materials.Reading through them the modelling and converting stuff guide book seems to be the best of the bunch with a lot of really good technical information, where as the painting guides it largely just gives pointers on a few key bits for a lot of colour schemes and you have to work out the rest. There's some genuinely great stuff though in that modelling guide; some simple tweaks, dealing with awkward large metal models or mixed plastic and metal stuff, building the blood angel captain from the front cover on 2nd edition 40k, building an Arbites rhino conversion, standard bearers, some weird John Blanche shit, just a ton of very good, mostly simple guides and tips. Honestly this is one that should be up there with the terrain building guide of the same era.
>>85408270I have seen a lot of oldhammer dioramas, but this might take the cake for fantasy. I think the floor and gems really make it.
>>85448120>>85443344Those conversion guides carried me through converting some forty models in an all-metal Sisters of Battle army. There was a weird detail I recently found in the Realms of Chaos books, regarding the great Chaos incursion that lead to Magnus the Pious reuniting the Empire for a bit, was that a lot of forces of Chaos fought against the main organised invasion force. Alongside men of the Empire and the like. Because Chaos is like that.Does give interesting ideas though, imagining an Empire army teamed not only with the distinct Kislevites but warbands of Chaos champions and their entourages. Fuck knows how they negotiated that arrangement, trying to pretend they're simply mercenaries or "We're here to help you, or else" kind of meetings. Strange mercenaries happen like that though on occasion, like over in the 5th edition Dogs of War there was a unit of Undead-hating skeletons that were known to team up with the Empire against Chaos and other such things. Had Orc, Dwarf and Elf skeletons in the mix of models too which was neat.
>>85468452
>>85469000Another odd realisation: it's statistically incredibly unlikely but it is actually possible to generate a chaos spawn that's a normal looking person with all their chaos attributes rolled as essentially positives; just a bunch of stat boosts and the like. For instance: rolling the D6+6 attribute for say, 9 total could net a spawn like: Technology: Stub gun (cos why not)Strong +3 strengthResilient +1 toughnessRapid RegenerationMassive Intellect +2 IntBlood substitution - acid +1T, S3 hit on opponents when hitAgility +3 InitiativeIrrational hatred: anything bigger than itIllusion of Normality: +1 fear point when it switches from looking normal to... looking normalSame thing goes for champions falling at the eye of god check, they could be turned into a spawn with only positive traits thrown on. Even more likely if you count moderately but not hugely mutating changes. and if you've not had mental stat drops. The big counter to it is all spawn are subject to stupidity and don't get to use a bunch of equipment unless it's physically attached to them. I don't know if spawn are prevented from casting spells if they knew them though, I don't think I saw that they are... So it's entirely possible to have a spawn who is just some decently powerful, perhaps even intelligent (when not suffering from the stupidity rule), normal looking, probably naked, person. Which would probably be one of the weirdest things to see.
After weeks of waiting they are finally here. I am kinda nervous about opening them desu - in foil they feel like relics.

Well, a bit low on creative moods as of right now, got giant pile of various eras ork bits in my box, what should I make....I was thinking on perhaps making some bases and later making some orks for em or perhaps painting up some old metal elric/elf riders.
We've lately been getting into 2e 40k, and I was looking at some of the stuff I got around to make a dedicated 2e army. I have a bunch of Cadians, some tanks, various HQ models, and Prospero box Custodes. I was thinking an IG army (maybe Malcador's Chosen style vets using Storm Trooper rules) with Custodes backing them up. But what should I field them as? I've been thinking of GK rules. 5 models, big, good save, stick that can shoot and chop. Seems to fit the bill.
>>85483822Currently trying to fight losing the creative mood by alternating what I'm working on; am currently crafting some Ork hoverboard riders to counter the newly jump-pack equipped assault marine opposition. Trying to make suitably high tech but a bit industrial looking hoverboards instead of just surf boards. The riders are being some of the 1990 plastic orks, with some conversion. And they will be painted suitably absurdly bright colours to make them stand out even amongst the rest.

Space Wolves got lots of love in Second Edition - probably more so than any other specific chapter. After that, Blood Angels get plenty of special models between the Death Company (which include some Mk VIs) and the Sanguinary Guard, but for older models we really just have to improvise... although if you look closely, some modern kits have the parts to build a Mk IV Imperial Maximus suit in them.
Anything new/notable in the oldhammer related 3d printing scene lately?
Anyone know the safest brush on primer for lead minis?Read some contain acids that could promote lead rot.
>>85503197If you're super concerned you could always varnish the model first then prime. Otherwise I think gesso is usually safe for everything. I've used it a bunch anyway, not that it proves anything.
>>85497416just because you don't like it doesn't mean others also don't like it (yes even turkeynids)
>>85500548I don't think so, I just spent 48ish hours scouring telegram for the same couple of dozen (of admittedly awesome) oldhammer model scans I already had. Wish the remainder of the old plastic monopose minis would find their way to a scanner. Would be great fun to have the OG psycho styrene Dwarf and the rest of the fantasy plastics as well as the remainder of the 2E 40k monopose dudes, Nurgle marines, Orks et al. But it's either patience or investing in a photogrammetry rig and the old minis.
I'm probably one of the few people that love the old plastics as much as the old lead though.
>>85509441I have the old WHFB plastic dragon and I love him.

I’ve been reading Ian Watson’s 40k books recently, and they’re a fantastic read. Extremely fun and gross in the same way reading the Rogue Trader rulebook is. I finished Space Marine a few nights ago and now I’m on the Inquisiton War. Anyone else read these? What did you think?
>>85511192After early 2000s the quality of BL books fell dramatically for me. I have a few I've found here and there, and they're perfectly fine pulp. Stories were less about cool dudes being cool to sell more toys and just fleshing out the universe.
>>85511192If you are reading the reissues, they are pretty heavily censored. Original copies are pretty cheap and a good look at Watson's style before he became a SF powerhouse. Also, the first editions have some cracking art. Bill King, Ian Watson, and Jack Yeovil/Kim Newman's early Games Workshop books are all great reads. Also, without Draco we wouldn't have gotten Eisenhorn, Ravenor, or Bequin, so yeah, I'm a fan.
>>85511275>reissues censoredFuck this gay Earth right in its aids riddled asshole with a rusty pipe.
>>85511192Only ever read the first one Inquisitor one, fortunately it was an original run version (before the re-edit where the Squat was replaced) and I enjoyed Watson's take on the insanity of the setting and his mature approach, and not just in that there was sex as well as violence, but in that it was clearly sci-fi by someone who had written things before GW employed them, yet fully embraced all the really weird shit.>>85511245file name of that image is good, since there's always been the fuck it just draw the model stuff jammed in alongside more worthy pieces..
>>85511390>there's always been the fuck it just draw the model stuff jammed in alongside more worthy pieces..The what now?
>>85511192Currently reading inquisition war and I definitely agree with the divide between this style of stuff and later BL stories. Even the Eisenhorn Omnibus was kind of meh by comparison.
Anyone going to Bring Out Yer Lead this weekend?
>>85513296
>>85513296See you there, anon.
>>85511383Yes, the modern company with a much bigger audience of mostly children should definitely be republishing novels full of bondage and piss fetishism. That's an entirely rational perspective.
>>85514691>GW buys Brazzers>keeps publishing their videos>but censors them to be "kid friendly">this makes perfect senseHow about just memory hole the books if you're embarrassed by them? This middle of the road stuff pleases nobody. Kids don't care about some old crap and people who do don't want it watered down.

>>85517910Wasn't Fangorn just a pseudonym for Christopher Baker, the same guy who did the Redwall covers?
>>85520987It still is his pseudonym though? All through his Hollywood career at least. No idea if he dropped for the Redwall books, not my cup of tea.

>>85403945im about to cancel my eoeorbis order. its been months now
>>85403945>>85526040There's a reason in every OP it lists them explicitly as very unreliable. Both US and UK versions.Black Tree are bad and have been bad for many, many years. Like 15+ years. Unfortunately with the exact same pattern of non-fulfilment, nil communication and then maybe an approximation of what was ordered arriving months late. If you're lucky/complain a bunch you get an apologetic email at some point blaming whatever they can think of that makes it not their fault. That absolute ancient grog who ran Navwar, a place where you had to order by fax or postal order well into the 21st century despite having a website, was doing things with better response time and professionalism than Eoeorbis/Black Tree ever has. Get your money back any way you can possibly up to the point of robbing them.

TIL that printing the scanned epic Magnus the Red at 28mm scale looks pretty fantastic.
So there are scans of old minis and what not, and I kinda wanna test one thing, any of the shitty 3rd ed plastics scanned as 3D prints? Since many were of low quality testing if perhaps FDMs can print them.

Are there any hellcannons done in oldhammer style? I recently bought two boxes of frostgrave demons (lovely kit, lots of spare parts and the models have bit of a retro vibe) for OPR and I thought of getting them some artillery.
