double varnished my finished army and while they were all laid out took a picture too and counted points got 7500 points base cost
Been trying out some different silvers for my Astral Claws. What one do you think suits that scheme best?
>>85014685Nice bug infestation.
>>85014685Thats a lot of bugs, they look fantastic. Also seeing your post reminded me i needed to varnish something, so thanks.
This Gaslands stuff is a lot more fun than I thought it would be, I really enjoy slapping bits on cars to create dumb things.I need a batter way to beat up and damage cars though
>>85014723I think I prefer the left one more. Tough to tell with just the silver how it will play out with the other colours though.
Do you guys paint the mouth of models black to show the teeth better?
>>85014723I think both metals either way without the blue tint of the left or black wash of the right would look closer to astral claws colours. however, i think the left would go well with golds and other metallics and themetically look pre-corruption.Whereas the darkness of the right would give off traitor vibes with metallics.
>>85014893That was my initial thought as well. I did a quick mock up of roughly how it might look (obviously very saturated colours) and I think the browner shade with the other colours is more striking. That being said, the brown steel has had an oil wash and the bluer steel hasn’t so that probably helps boost the contrast so I don’t think it’s a very fair comparison.>>85014970Interesting. I wanted to try and capture that slightly brownish tone in the shadows you see in the FW colour plates for the Astral Claws but I think it’s ended up making them too dull - more IW like. I think I’d err towards atheism brighter steel on reflection now. The blue tint is very interesting and I think comes from the S75 metal I used as the base. I do think overall, when the other colours are actually painted and even with the blue tint, left will look a better. Thank you for the thoughts, anons.
>>85014918For human heads I typically paint a very light layer/base of white and then add a light layer of a dark purple and or red as those are the realistic colours. But I suppose black could work if you were going for the "grim" & "dark" look but also depends on the race.
>>85014875I don't really damage mine, I just weather them a bit.Pic rel was also heavily converted.
>>85015106I was thinking of doing it on my termagaunts.
One way to clean up pile of junk you put away for scratch biulding but can't find a use for I feel? Also various cut offs of plasticard, sprue and so on, made for some nice (if a tad brittle) piles of trash. Gonna see about varnishing them in a week and use them on the table.
>>85014723>>85015095The blue scheme. You just reminded me of an Astral Claws plog I used to follow on Warseer back in maybe 2009.
>>85014806Thanks anon! Do you happen to know of a good specific colored paint that just works with soft tone?>>85014397I'm pretty sure those bubbles won't show up if you've been brush priming just fine.
>>85014723Darker silver looks more atral claws
Reposting my pot punk, I'm pretty happy about this one
>>85014918I find black too dark for that, makes it look like a cartoony black hole, esp of teeth are white
>>85015283>>85014875The more Gaslands the better.
More kitbashing
>>85017490I know drill the barrels. I can't settle on a scheme so I'm just doing a new one for each squad trying to add more detail each time and using more normal paints and less speed paints.I'm assembling the warboss and really like the effects that speed paint gives over a silver base. He's going to be a shiney boy.
>>85017490>I can't settle on a scheme so I'm just doing a new one for each squad trying to add more detail each time and using more normal paints and less speed paints.I know the feeling. A good majority of the infantry I paint for my Orks are "test models" so the scheme and skin tone recipes are pretty different for each one. I've settled on painting the armor and skin with care but skimping on the rest when it came to batch painting.
>>85015095Wow anon howd you get that cel shaded effect?
Work on the bad bitch wagon has commenced
>>85018192looks ready to gatekeep, gaslight AND girlboss
>>85016386
Anybody used the TTCombat sprays? Are they really cheap for a reason?
>>85018389About the same price as Krylon, its probably fine.Don't see why you wouldn' just use Krylon though
>>85017812I like the freedom in changing about orks give, makes it easier to head canon why my army is going to look like a group gathered from hobo ravers. I'm only really painting past couple of months and can see improvements each time I go at them.. I gave up in 2nd edition as I hated painting that much>>85017872Base coat black, heavy dry brush gray, light dry brush white, speed paint Ork skin, dry brush verminlord hide, dry brush niblet green finally a wash with a 50/50 mix of agrax and nuln. I think the last step done most of that look but that's everything on the skin there
>>85016386Still nailing it, hope you're doing great !>>85017812Absolutely loving them !Also, base. (dont mind hooves prints)
>>85018429>KrylonNot sold here, very expensive on ebay, guess i'll order the TT stuff.
>>85017223This needs more (you)s. The sculpting work on the robot and wolf are particularly nice.>>85018657If you're in England, Halford's is pretty well-reccomended
>>85017490really nice anon
>>85017812These a great dude
>>85018451I wasn't talking to an ork poster, check again. ;]
>>85018756Thanks, my greenstuffing isnt that good honestly. But I appreciate it. A lot of work went into posing these guys though. Got a few more in the works, but I really should get to painting instead of building.
>>85013489Idk I was drunk, git gud. I usually just use back of a hobby knife and various grits of “swizzle sticks” It was also a metal version of the model if that makes a difference.
I saw this basing material used to edge an urban toxic waste pit in a video, any idea what I could buy to get a similar look for ruined terrain basing?
>>85019930It's literally just coarse sand mixed with various sizes of stones, anon. Steal a shovel full of dirt from the nearest construction site and you're 90% of the way there.
Almost finished a test model for a colour scheme. Went too heavy on the wash, made a bit of a mess, had to clean up a lot and still ends up looking rough. Particular areas I didn't paint back over with the base, like directly under the collar, end up being very, very dark. Too close to the gold, perhaps. Note to future me: Apply it extremely thinly everywhere except the recesses.Excuse the horrendous camera quality, it is the best I had at hand.
>>85019210I really should have gone to Specsavers then
>>85020136Gotta stop forgetting to add file
Finished a Heroquest Chaos warrior that Ill be running as any number of characters in my Fantasy Chaos warriors army Ive been working on. Really happy how he turned out. I bought this with an ebay batch of the 1998 chaos warriors, so hes pretty old and was the only one unpainted in the batch, so I assume hes pretty old. He was good pratice for the SOIAF baratheon army Im working on on the side.
>>85017223Absolutely fantastic. Don't usually like tacticool 40k but this is gnarly. Cant wait to see it painted
>>85017223Sexy warband.the contrasts between tacticool and space fantasy work very well.
>>85014893>>85014970>>85015814>>85016286In the end I settled in the bluer tone but I’m going to try and reign in the blue a little bit more. Done the base coats on a few models so far. For some reason my camera in this lighting is killing the shine on them a bit but you get the idea. >>85017872If you mean the pauldrons etc that’s actually some PS editing I did - not paint haha. Although it would be cool to see a paint job like that. If you mean on the armour that’s just an oil wash. Thank you again for the opinions anons. It helped get through the analysis paralysis. And while I’m posting, I don’t suppose anyone would know where I could get the old FW Astral Claws transfer sheet?
I'm still pretty happy about this magenta
>>85021204very nice. I love the palette and how the base works with the miniature. Great work anon.
>>85020196Looks good to me
>>85020414I like him a lot overall! The new(er) shield somehow looks a little too crisp and big on him, and his articulated gauntlet being leather colored bothers me, but those are quibbles. It's a clear, clean, straightforward classic look
>>85015095The brown looks better. The warmth offsets the blue better and matches the brownish look from the FW Badab war books.
>>85021517That was what I was thinking with the brown but I now feel like outside of close to ideal lighting (like the pic) the techniques I’d used dulled the shine a bit too much. As this is quite a special project (I’m aiming to make it up or rare or OOP models) I want the models to be quite punchy. The blueish steel is a lot shinier so I’m going to stick with that and hopefully reintroduce the brown with some selected glazing.
Kill Team 2018 WIPnever into nurgle, but oh boy im having fun.
>>85020414>Heroquest Chaos warriorIt's been a while (25 years or so), but I believe that's a Battlemasters chaos warrior, no Heroquest.
>>85021106>I don’t suppose anyone would know where I could get the old FW Astral Claws transfer sheet? If you need exactly the old FW sheet without compromises, I guess ebay or some other secondhand marketplace, but good luck finding one out there. If you're open to compromises there's either this one: https://www.chaptercustomizer.com/collections/astral/products/astral-decal?variant=42731090673886Or alternatively printing your own, pic related, I know it's missing the star symbol but it's the best one I managed to find on a quick search.
So I'm thinking I'm going to make Picrel into a GSC Patriarch, for a kitbashed Techno-Barbarian household, dabbling in the supersoldier-via-xeno-biology, with the Patriarch being the prophesied end result of such work.Want a couple of opinions on ways to implement this, on things I'm currently deciding on myself.>Do I Gigerfy the limbs? Adding ridges or cutting out little divots or pockmarks in a natural sequence pattern. There's already a fair bit on the arms, but I could do some on the legs as well.>Or do I shape the legs into more of a natural, keratinous armour like I plan to do with the body?>Should the body armour look more Tyranid-esque, with the pronounced ridges and ribs? Or should it look more smooth, musculature armour, like Stormcast in https://www.games-workshop.com/en-NZ/Age-Of-Sigmar-Warrior-English-2021 ?>Armour only the upper chest, or the full trunk?>Incorporate the tits into the final model, or flat out go over them.Would be interested to hear the opinions and perspectives of elegen/t/gentlemen like yourselves.
>>85023832Oh yeah, and I will be removing much of the more Slaaneshi parts of the model most likely, such as the chains, the masks, the tentacles, and very likely replacing the sword as well.
>>85014521Anybody know of a specific skin colored paint for lighter tones that just works with brown washes like strong tone/agrax earthshade?
Holy mother of god Vallejo metallic are so much better than GW. Like I know people say this all the time but the fucking difference is like night and day. I recently repainted some SOB vehicles I had with a Vallejo Air Metallic (Gunmetal) and my god that shit is so easy to highlight. GW Metallics even after washing look so fucking bland and are so annoying to highlight.
>>85024083Pre Vallejo metallic (Leadbelcher)
>>85018596Your base looks beautiful, what kind of unit is going to be on top of it?Starting on my bases today, everything got a wash of agrax, now I'm working my way up from the bottom adding the basecoat back in, highlights and drybrushing after that.
>>85024083damn good job on the stained glass
>>85024366I won't lie, I redid it probably 4 times and at that final iteration just decided to call it good enough.
>>85021449Truth be told anon the newer shield always bugged me. It was put on by the previous owner. They unfortunately used plastic cement on the pour guy so it did damage when I attempted to remove it, as it had fused to the original plastic. I felt in the end, it would have been best to simply leave in on.>>85022745Im a zoomer whos only barely 20. Unlike 40k model lines l, I havent been able to find a great amount of documentation on Fantasy models and history. To be fair, I also haven't searched an absolute ton. My bad anon.
>>85023855>>85016019Found a dakkadakka forum post. Pic relatedhttps://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/792059.page;jsessionid=870A2A3747158D734348C8C0F154D64F#10927924Basically wraithbone and then guilliman flesh. Can anyone confirm if ArmyPainter flesh wash or reikland fleshshade will get a similar effect on this or even a very light grey paint?
>>85024302what are those toppers? Did you use one of those GSW rollers? Also what material is the putty, wanting to try this myself but can you give me some pointers?
>>85024083You mean Vallejo Metal Color gunmetal grey in the 32mlk pot? I've been using AP Gunmetal but I need to buy more soon.
>>85024482>>85022745That Warrior also got included in the "learn to paint" kit that GW put out in ~1998. These two were my very first minis.
Second model for my nurgle aligned iron warrior kill team done
I think this is about as done as my "firewarriors" are going to get. Now just two more squads! and five crisis suits....and two broadsides.......and farsight...........before Saturday. Pray for me brothers.
>>85024302>Your base looks beautiful, what kind of unit is going to be on top of it?Ogroid thaumaturge, and I am being an bitch not fixing all the problems he got.For your bases, if you like my result, yoy're not far from my process, 2 or 3 pigment powder at the end of your process, placing them here and there, spreading them randomly and boom !
>>85017812The difference in skin colors looks so cool. I've got some orcs I should try different things on
>>85024083Did you take that picture inside your fridge?
>>85026746Fridge is unironically a easy lightbox
>>85026746yes I did, can I get you some cheese?
>>85025229The bases are 3d prints from Txarli, if you have a 3d printer here are the files you can use, https://gofile.io/d/m14HzqSorry I can't give you any pointers, I'm a complete newbie to sculpting as well which is why I opted for 3d prints.
>>85019550>His smile and optimism - restored.
>>85017531Speedpaints really are just a tool, not a crutch. They look like shit when used in singularity, but you look like you're finding a good mix. I really like the axe and the cloth.
>>85017223Is that a goddamned Zoid?
Question, do people use white oil washes and if so for what? Found some white oil paint in my brother's old art stuff box and he handed it over (had to use it when he went to school), thinking of what to use it for, I already been trying to learn to use brown and black oils to paint models and washes.
>>85028013I have some resin bases I'm going to test it on. I know for certain I can't destroy a resin base with a oil wash. A plastic mini though I can certainly turn into a brittle piece of broken plastic.
>>85028037I never had plastic working poorly with oil washes? I mean what would whte paint based oils do? In terms of color I mean, what color would it help with.
>>85028013oil washes are great for recess shading, adding grime, glazing, subtle shading, but they require some finicky set-up and tools. for one thing, you need NEED the oil paints (thinned with the appropriate oil thinners) to flow readily into the crevices and that requires a gloss coat over the model. from there you can then clean up the excess oil with more thinner, using soft brushes (not your good acrylic ones because they'll get fucked up) or q-tips to brush away excess. oils also take a long time to cure vs a normal wash, im talking days instead of minutes, but its the tradeoff for ease of weathering and shading so.
>>85023832>patriarchno, keep the booba, make a matriarch
>>85028370>instead of brainwashing women to breed she brainwashes menstop I can’t walk correctly with an erection.
>>85028280Oh I am aware how to use them it's mostly asking what white color would be good for, I know stuff like "pink undercoat for yellow is good idea" or "green for red" and so on
>>85028409does the patriarch even discriminate sexes?
>>85027358>>85024083Sorry, which Vallejo gunmetal was it exactly? there's several.
>>85028447Are genestealers hermaphroditic?I’m not well versed on tyranid biology but I assumed the use of “patriarch” meant it was a male.
I come here from the frontpage. All these figurines look badass.Who are you guys? What is this? A game?
>>85028723Mixture of statues made by people themselves using epoxi putty (a form of self curing clay like material), miniatures made by various companies, display models and sometimes 3D printed items, generally ranging from things that look pretty to peaces for games like TRPGS and wargames
>>85024083Just wait until you try scale75 metals.
>>85028723Miniature building, painting, and playing hobby. Mostly gamesworkshop stuff posted here, but this thread encompasses all miniatures.
>>85028525No Genestealers carry young or lay eggs, all stealers infect other species with their DNA so when they breed the babies have stealer DNA. Its closer to 'male' than 'female'.
>>85028778>>85028821Holy shit! What a hobby. You fucks must've spent thousands of hours just to get to the point where you couldmake something half decent. Bravo, I'm truly impressed.
>>85028723>What is this? A game? It's lots of games ... or not, if you're just into collecting, sculpting, printing, and/or painting miniatures. Back before GW rebranded all their stores as "Warhammer" stores, it was always a hoot when someone would walk into the Games Workshop store in Denton looking for a spare controller for their Xbox or Playstation. The cherry on top was when they'd recognize the Space Marines and ask if they were based on the Space Marine or Dawn of War video games.
>>85028940It's generally not nearly as hard as it looks, it's mostly about picking right colors, doing all the steps right and coloring mostly within lines. It's far easier then painting on canvas since tools like "washes" exist allowing to hide good chunk of errors or some art styles just generally being better at hiding ones lack of skill. It's more about knoweldge/asking others what to do.
>>85028723It's wargaming, a type of turn based combat simulation on the tabletop using miniatures and markers. Most people here play Warhammer, Warhammer 40k and other games by Games workshop.
>>85024746>wraithbone+reikland fleshshade=that picAight I think VGC bonewhite is close enough to those paints. Has anyone tried this?
>>85028828>genestealers reproduce the way Terry McGinnis was born in Batman Beyondthat’s kinda funny.
>>85014521This might be an odd question, but what's a good place to go blog post autistically about conversion and army projects? Say you wanna get really into explaining the thought process behind why you army ended up looking the way it did and what concepts and inspirations you were playing around that lead to it? Twitter or some shit? I've been so used to just being anonymous for a decade and a half that I haven't ever really bothered making accounts on social media sites.
>>85026032This is giving me Girls Frontline vibes, good work on the paintjob
>>85028940The beauty of a place like this is that you can get the insight of thousands of hours of other anon's testing and innovation and employ it in your own art, using lessons learned by other anons. I have zero days in any kind of art school or lessons, or the like, but I've been complimented on the look of my models (not these ones, obviously, they're just paint scheme tests) . What's important is that you post models yourself. Show your skill, get critique, make progress. Happy painting.
Loving the new MVI marines, perfect for kitbashing a custom warband
>>85028968I found a "Grand Crusader" GRN-D-01 Mech in the back of a box. Is there any reason that Ral Partha EU and Iron Wind Minis no longer sell the old FASA version of that Mech? The only one on Ebay is going for about £80.... so $100-ish.
>>85030244Unironically instagram, take pics and provide captions to explain everything. Use a burner email
I started to highlight the black, I used a dark grey but I don’t think it’s enough contrast so i’m gonna do a 2nd highlight of a bright grey. Also AP washes dry glossy as fuck because all my dudes look like their clothes are covered in oil.
>>85030244I'd say the Bolter and Chainsword forum (although they'll be offline for maintenance for a little while longer) or maybe DakkaDakka.Instagram does allow for easy pictures, but if you want to go full autismo with the backstory then that might not be the best place for heaps of text
>>85021106>>85021725i look forward seeing your progress astral-anon
>>85030452you just made me buy 2 squads from ebay. Great looking conversion, despite it being so simple.
guys, what the fuck am i doing wrong with glazing/layering?I've watched so many tutorials on glazing and layering to paint human skin, but i can't ever get it right. if i thin the paint down to the exact "glaze" consistency the videos show, it ends up just going on patchy/splotchy, if i thin it less, it covers way too much, if thin it more it just runs off into the recesses... how the fuck can i ever get that smooth skin highlight to shadow gradient... is it the brush I'm using? it's a 35mm base model and I'm using a 00 size thin brush. should it be a bigger/thicker brush??the colors I'm using aremournfang brown for the solid darkest base coatthen i layer on a thin as i can coat of cadian fleshtone all over it, and then a second (or third) coat of cadian fleshtone again but only over the parts the light will hit and then i do one single as thin as possible coat of Kislev flesh all over and then another coat only on the places the light hits directly. in the end it all looks like Kislev flesh... what the fuck am i doing wrong... even if i don't do the all over very thin coat of Kislev it still looks like shit because there is no "blend" between the Kislev and cadian fleshtone no matter how thin i get it>inb4 GW paints lolit's what i have on hand to practice and try to get better, and in the end we have to admit that all acrylic paints are essentially the same in the end except some minor differences in color tone or finish.
>>85030593>>85031013Cool, thanks. I might try both. Although, what are their policies on straight up booba models? Because I have ended up making a bunch of them.
Any good videos for airbrushing? Everything seems to be cleaning, setup or setting reccomendations
>>85028723I consider this a three in one hobby of collecting, painting/modeling, and playing.

>>85031103Too much paint on the brush
>>85031103you're probably way overthinking the process. also mournfang brown doesn't seem like a good start for glazing thin layers of bright colours ontoalsogw paints lolin all seriousness if you can get them the reaper skin triads are fucking great and are good to use straight out of the bottle
>>85030477>Is there any reason that Ral Partha EU and Iron Wind Minis no longer sell the old FASA version of that Mech? Not sure about how much real world FASA/Battletech/Ral Partha history you know, but the original Grand Crusader design was one of the fancy Japanese-style designs created by Victor Musical Industries (VMI). After the mess with Harmony Gold, FASA tried to distance itself from any other company's products. This meant the obvious disappearance of Macross/Dougram/Crusher Joe models, but also extended to those created for Battletech by VMI and even seemingly innocuous things like mentioning "the enigmatic Dr. B. Banzai: and the "Fighting Uruk-Hai".They didn't want to get sued again - by anyone!

And now with decent lighting.
>>85031103the key to incorporating light sourcing seems to be to use layer after layer of diluted paint to affect transitions and to enhance contrast. I find that I'm having to do it a lot more for my first real non-metallic metal project than I ever really had to in the past, when I mostly painted in the 'eavy metal style. you have to be patient and learn to recognize when you're starting to take shortcuts or lose concentration. that's when it's time to put the brush down for a few hours
Hey mates, I posted the other day with a pic of my first model. Here are the others, I think I’m just about done. Not sure about adding anymore detailing, the paint is already on pretty thick.I feel like I’m getting the hang of this
>>85034221the paint is on thick, but I would recommend you to color the edges of the pauldrons to break up the red.
>>85034421Yeah I’m still getting the hang of the paint thickness. I’m inconsistent, but I started using a wet palette and it’s helping a lot.I agree but I’m sick of fussing over these three. The next set I do I will take it slower
Figured I'd ask around as much as possible before I try.Going to run some ink through my airbrush. Most people are saying you don't need to thin it at all. This true, or should I think it with some water? Or is there something specific to ink to use?
>>85034673Inks are fluid enough that they work with even small needles without thinning. They can be thinned same as any acrylic paint for a subtler effect.
>>85021725Sounds cool. Post progress updates when you can. I liked how FW presented the Astral Claws in the books. >>85037953It's mostly miniature focused so maybe not quite fitting.Which is a shame because I like the idea of using miniatures as a starting point for nice visual imagery. Sadly I am unsure if any other miniature company takes dioramas and edits them to look "cinematic" and I am unsure about what the name of such a style is called.A twitter artist called "artistsempire" calls them "paintovers."Here's a non Warhammer pic of one of his works.

>>85036358Maybe the carbine variant reads better. I do have a markerlight version to represent an upgraded squad leader, I just haven't painted it up yet.
>>85038842They do read a little better. I wonder if test-mounting the "head" of the rifle drones to the side of the gun or under teh edge of the dish would make them read a little better? You could also mount them on some kind of simple spoiler or yoke, which would give the "head" elevation enough to not look like a weapon accessory. The Reliant-class ships in Trek provide a good example. As-is they look like scopes and not heads per se.
First time magnetising on a Troll. I know the seams are a bit wide, might have to greenstuff it. I also made the head jut out a little too far so I’ll have to remake the neck too, unless I accept a bit of gaps just for play. But I don’t think he’ll see much action anyway because I heard Trolls are bad in MESBG.
>>85034127Good prints and good painting, anon. What specifically are those red and "off black" and dirt brown paints you're using? They look very nice and are used well on those walkers.>>85038842The carbine drone walkers are much better looking. The heavy gun also doesn't look like a massive weight that could easily fall over. And the drones look balanced.I also like two legged walkers with a mounted gun. Also have you considered 3D printing "hollow bases?" They also go by different names but The raised lips seem to protect gaming flock a lot more easily.https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/art/wargaming-bases-recessed-various-sizesJust understand that magnetizing the bases might be next to impossible with the particular link. I think it is possible for the Reaper "Gaming bases" to be magnetized but I haven't seen the underside of those bases so I can't confirm.
>>85038842The issue IMO isn't the gun size. It's the placement.Placing the gun in the centre draws focus to it. Everything on those kits is moulded around the gun, and the motion of it.Same as the official sniper drone kits. The motion of the model is around the gun. Moreover, they read very similar because they have the same basic shapes or shape concepts. Gun in the middle, fin(s) out the back, so you're reduced to counting fins and minor details to distinguish, instead of being able to do so by glancing at the model shape.Personally for pulse carbines, maybe something like the Supreme commander gatling bot? Carbines on one side, photon grenade launcher on the other? It would help, again, to distinguish more readily.
>>85035869The arms are a breeze and the CSM heads fit perfect with the new MVI. The only small problem is that the CSM backpacks don't fit with the backside of the MVI but it's just to clip and file and they fit. I'm waiting out on MII that'll probably release after summer, then I'll add some to my IW
>>85039152>think it is possible for the Reaper "Gaming bases" to be magnetized but I haven't seen the underside of those bases so I can't confirm.I like those bases but I am not sure if there is room to magnetize them from the bottom. >>85037629So far I've done the official chaplain and librarian and I've converted a techmarine from an Ironclad, an apothecary from a vendread and a champion from a grey knight dread. I still have a leftover grey knight dread I'll use as the main part of my captain.

>>85035407Thanks, anon. And yeah the FW Badab books were the main inspiration here, the colour plates are beautiful. Astral Claws, a “lost” chapter, also felt like a good fit for a force made up of hard to find marine models. That BT project sounds really cool actually. The crusading theming and conversions would be amazing as well. I would love to see more armies like that as I always imagine marines having lots of servitors and serfs accompanying them on larger campaigns. I’ll post regular updates as much as I can this week but after that I’ll unfortunately not be able to work on them for a few months (internship abroad). I’ll be in these threads though no doubt. I’m very flattered by the interest!>>85039238Thank you, anon! I’m very happy with how they’ve turned out. I finally feel like I’m over the hill on getting the silver right and can move on. You’re definitely right on the airbrushing. I put base blue and gold on a model last night to see with the regular brush to see how they mesh. I like it so far but it’s the AB from now on. Only issue is these space marine heroes models have moulded on pauldrons so it makes it a bit tricky to AB (naturally, I didn’t consider that when doing the silver first). On the plus side they’re push fit and I didn’t glue them so the arms come off easily. I’ve got a plan to use some tinfoil masking so we’ll see how that works later this evening.

It's a pretty common practice. Artists use maquettes all the time. Comic Book artists use actions figures to reference poses and perspective, you can get these wooden dollies and all manner of articulated anime figures for this purpose as well.>Especially with images like the ones made by ForgeWorld in their Imperial Armour/Horus Heresy stuff. That style is also used for Aeronautica Imperialis. Sadly I am unsure if any other miniature company takes dioramas and edits them to look "cinematic" and I am unsure about what the name of such a style is called.Photobashing, I'd say. You take backgrounds and effects like smoke and muzzleflashes etc and put them together. Pretty common in the concept art industry. Look at some concept art for sci-fi video games and movies and you find loads of cropped photo textures to add quick details and texture.>A twitter artist called "artistsempire" calls them "paintovers."paintovers if for actually painting on additional detail. Say you got a picture of a miniature and you paint additional reflections from light sources in or rework the face etc. All of these things flow together. For example a screenshot of a white boxing of a level or a rough outline for a character in a video game is often painted over to get more accurate representation to the final product as opposed to the first generation concept art. In your case it just looks like you are using the troll as photo reference. That's another thing.

>>85042319>>85042377Can't recommend Gurney enough. >>85044024Like others pointed out the cheaper winsor & newton paints are a good entry point everything below that has too little pigment and too much filler to be thinned properly.

A group of arms coming from under each shoulder might be better. Maybe fit him with forklift blades? The hand on the sword guy looks more Tau elegance than it does Imperium brute force.

>>85047479I use equal parts paint and water with my army painter, but make sure they get a good 10-30 seconds on the vortex mixer first. without it my paints were consistently shit. Hoping to move past the army painter phase and get to vallejo
piggybacking off of the army painter question, How do I properly get the precum out? I shake a little and go to squeeze but what comes out just looks like normal paint.
>>85045221You know, I never played it. Twisted Metal, yeah, but never Vigilante 8.
>>85046901solid painting and shading. looks like you had primer issues. I haven't had to deal with that sort of speckling/mottling since I got an airbrush
>>85047717I've had AP bottles that had very little precum that I could see. It might depend on the paint or even the batch. the precum extraction is best done with a freshly opened bottle that's been sitting long enough for the stuff to rise to the top. after that you don't have to worry about it anymore as long as you shake before use. also: vallejo paints can have precum as well
>>85046114nice. do you have the STLs for those?
>>85048165I own litterally hundreds of bottles of vallejo and i've never seen that, only medium meant to be remixed into the paint.
>>85047397These look great. Very 80s GW.
>>85048254what I saw may well have been medium. I had the issue with model color metallics - brass and gold. in any case, I thought I shook the bottles for long enough (30 seconds or so) and it looked an awful lot like precum to me. I have a vortex mixer now
Using paints similar to these, I want to finally try out NMM. Do I start with the darker colors, putting purple over all the parts I want to be gold, or start with the ivory?
>>85048422Start with the darkest shadow and layer up to the brightest highlight.
>>850455233d prints?
Painting a gundam in BA colors.Zenithal priming, contrast red and gloss varnishing done. Going to pick out the metallics and recess wash the thing. Maybe try to freehand some very minor NMM filigree if I don't fuck up the recess wash cleanup. Want to try the mr weathering color thingies as well and learn some chipping.
>>85048506Yeah- 'Arcadian Stormguard' on Cults from DavikDesigns I'm fairly sure- at work so can't remember
is the Vallejo skin set good or shit? it's 20$ and I've heard it's either a really good deal or shit. (though most people who dislike it are mad because they saw the picture of the paints, bought it anyways, and then complain that they couldn't paint black or dark skinned people with the set, despite being able to see the colors that come in the set) if it's shit though, what's the best alternative? reaper triads like that guy said?
>>85048542>in BA colors.Johnny Ridden is crying inside, Anon. Do you >want< to make the Crimson Thunderbolt sad?
>>85048706Sorry, anon, but I've got no idea what you're talking about. I don't watch gundam and bought the tallgeese simply because it looked cool.
>>85048698It's good. if you want to paint all the major skin types get the larger set
>>85044881my guy I saw this on instagram and I saved it
>>85048542>Red TallgeeseDon't you be hornin' in on my action anon.
>>85048741Welp, I guess it was naive of me to expect to be first.
>>85048734Johnny Ridden is a minor ace who uses crimson and black as his primary color scheme. It's a running gag in the fandom (and side stories) that he gets constantly mistaken for the main villain of the show, who drives a salmon pink suit that is constantly referred to as "red" by everyone else. The man who drives Tallgeese is a flagrant clone of said salmon pink man. You basically set up a perfect joke to which you were not privy.
Finished some lads.
>>85049317Fucking sexy lads.I'm jealous, and I don't even paint SM, much less BT.
Could I get some C&C?I'm trying out various shades of dark blue and also different combinations and patterns for urban camoAm I thinning my paints enough? I can't ever seem to get it as smooth as other peoples pics
>>85049541Bonus: My test mini that has the best camo pattern for some reasonI also really like how striking the triangle camo is
>>85049541Unpopular take incoming, but I'd say your paints are thin enough for now, assuming by your post you're not the most skilled or experienced painter out there.I'd reccommend taking a look at other painting techniques first, before worrying about perfect thinned paints. Like picking out highlights, using lighting to draw attention to different parts of the model, and basic texture rendering. Going back over the highlights of the fatigues and the broad panels of flak armour with paint again to take away the gloss, and going over the skin with a glaze or a wash to add tonal variation and that gloss.
>>85048698>8 paints for $20 How is that not a good deal?
>>85048698>No blues or greens>No redsNot really good for learning to paint skin *well*
>>85049541You can thin your paints plenty and still end up with texture if you're flooding your model. If you're not dabbing your brush off on some towel before appyling it to the model, do so. You very rarely want to go straight from the palette to the model.
>>85049541You just need more practice. What paints did you use for the fairer and dark skin tones anyways?
>>85046114does brass even rust though
>>85049317Sexy work, anon. And a wonderful use of different helmets and bits. Where did you buy the bits for those different looking heads? Might look great for some custom made Inquisitorial crusaders. And that cross plate on the bottom row with the flamer. What third party did you buy from to get those bits? They look kino and great for knightly crusader themed space marines.
>>85049730No, but it does corrode in other ways.I image nurgle worship can rust anything though, even flesh.
>>85049660This isn't good advice. I would like to see the models of someone who posts this kind of advice.
>>85049772Sure thing here's a miniature from the guy who I learned that from.
>>85049738Thanks anon. Most of the helmets are 3D prints, got a bunch of medieval helmets and added sci-fi greebles to them in Blender. The flamer fella's bits are store-bought though, the helmet and flamer are both from Kromlech. Their Imperial Crusader line they put out recently. There's also a few Dark Angels Veteran Squad bits littered throughout.
>>85049800Hmm thats pretty good, I've never heard that you should dab your brush before it touches the model. Must just be an alternative to learning how to properly load your brush.
>>85049317Nice, into the old enamels I see >>85049541To anyone not sure if they're thinning their paints enough I would suggest buying a single pot of airbrush paint from citadel and doing a basecoat with it so that you know how thin your paints should be. I've said this a hundred times but your basecoats should probably take 4 coats for maximum smoothness and opacity and be the consistency of milk on your pallet. "Two thin coats" meme and its repercussions have been a disaster for all involved.
>>85049842why are you like this?
>>85049891Like what? If you learn proper brush loading you won't need to dab the brush before painting.
>>85049720Valejo Salmon Rose mixed 1:1 with Valejo WhiteThe Dark One is Valejo Burnt Umber + overlayed with Blood Reaver flesh. IMO theres no need to overlay, both produce a good dark skintone>>85049606Thanks, should I try to do the highlights now or finish my basecoating to be sure I got the best paint process?>>85049891>>85049930How about I just dab my brush and post back here with my results you skub mongers
This guy is for a space marine painting cimpetition. How does he look? I know its a meme to have Alpha Legion changing colors, but does he look like a snake shedding his scales or a chameleon changing skin?
Thoughts on these test doors? Supposed to go on an abandoned warehouse i'm building. Might paint the lights and buttons with the AP metallics used by >>85045523>>85045575 Maelstroms edge terrain sprue doors and windows with gunmetal then a red-brown sponge and a Vallejo dark rust wash.
>>85050303It's good, but it looks like paint chipping, not a deliberate process occurring.Sadly I don't know how I'd correct it though. Tiny line marker to trace the gaps between colours?
>>85050439If it looks like something unintended but still good I dont mind. I can work with paint chipping off, maybe in Horus Heresy days the Alpha Legion used a more primitive technology to hide their alliegance... like paint.Maybe even put flakes of chipped paint on the base of the mini.
>>85050474Man I would kill my wife if she gave my bits away
>>85049317They look beautiful as a whole squad. But whose helmet is that one Neophyte carrying? All the Crusaders wear their helmets already. Why bring a spare helmet to battle?
>>85050303Looks good to me, like he painted yellow over his Armor, and now its partially worn off due to environment or combat.
>>85050303>>85050439>>85050475You could look at this stealth suit if its supposed to be a technological illusion.>>85050574He's going to brain someone with it.
>>85050696For my illusion I want it to gradually change. The lightning shift is good, but its too stark a change between the two patterns.
i have no tankbustas so i put some rockets on guns
>>85050574Honestly I forgot about the neophyte with the extra helmet by the time I put together the initiates. I guess he took it off a fallen marine to return to the chapter armoury?
>>85050734Now dats orky.
>>85014521>Citadel most likely raised the price but lowered the quantity of their washesWelp. Besides ArmyPainter what are some good acrylic washes I can rely on besides Citadel?
>>85050899Why do you need alternatives to 2 perfectly useable brands?
>>85050439>alpha legionairre painted his armor as imperial fist>the paint starts chippingI honestly think that's actually great and chucklesome.
>>85050899What exactly is the Targor one? Is it replacing Nuln Oil or something??
Progression on correction, white is so awfull to blend...
>>85050969My nuln oil and agrax earthshade aren't gonna last forever. And the price per quantity of those washes won't justify things that much. So it makes me just want to move away to a different line. Already been doing that with going to Vallejo paints and AK's been looking interesting.
>>85051384Then buy AP washes, or try Vallejo washes. They all work.
>>85048542That red is gorgeous. Is that BA red contrast or Flesh Tearers red over the zenithal? It’s the exact shade I was thinking for me HH BA.
Finishing a bt chaplain, now just gotta wait for oils to dry before matt varnishing
>>85051588It's flesh tearers red, yes. I recommend using it through an airbursh because I've done this with a normal brush and ended up with blotches of brighter/darker paint where I wasn't fast enough.
>>85049541Go over them with a matt varnish so they dont look shiny. Army painter does a paint on one.
>>85051619Ah, perfect. And yeah definitely with the AB for that smooth colour transition. Did you do it over a regale black and white zenithal/pre-shade?Yours looks really cool far. While I’m not usually a gundam guy I’m looking forward to seeing your progress.
New thread:>>85051740>>85051740>>85051740
>>85049317really nice, I love how they all have a bit of individuality
>>85050734>rockets attached to the hammerI could see Orks actually doing that. The mental image of an Ork running up to a Space Marine and pretty much going for a suicide bombing without realizing it is hilarious.
