Today’s Build Divide reveal is a Normal rare from set 3.

Jap cards
>Upon [INFUSING] two Infuse-material resources into this card (this is a cost), you may select an enemy, and if you do, then target that selected enemy.
>When an enemy is targeted by this ability, and the infuse cost was [X-CHANG-D] with Infuse-material you control, you must deal 3 damage to that enemy (this effect is not optional).

Maybe I’ve not delved into a lot of the big ones like Vanguard but aren’t those cards the exceptions to the rules? Most cards being one or two cost or type symbols maybe with an If-Then being the height of its formatting silliness?

Japanese card effects are a mix of If-Then statements, costs and conditions.
The symbols are mostly for shorthand, denoting zones and avoiding MTG terms like tap.

The complaints seem to come from games using their own terminology and not the "accepted western approved MTG lingo" and boss/finisher cards having a lot of text and specific abilities

>>82976225
This big difference is how games are designed. That card isn't particularly complicated, but compare it to other games.

If that were a MTG card, it wouldn't use "Enter" as a keyword symbol. It would either have "Enter" be an Ability Word that only triggers if played from the hand or use two different terms for cards that enter play (eg. "Summoned" meaning played from hand and "Enters" meaning entering for any reason). Either way, it would be worded in a way that allows the second sentence ("The Enter abilities don't...") to be omitted entirely.

For the second ability, if this was a game like Hearthstone, they just wouldn't have optional "Enter" effects that trigger if you pay a cost when you play them. They'd just not design cards to work that way to avoid the 4 consecutive symbols.
Ironically, Shadowverse has a somewhat similar effect, Enhance. The ability would look like this:
>Enhance (5): Vanish target enemy SIGNI with power 10,000 or less
Due to the game being directly inspired by Hearthstone, implements this in a way that works well for a digital game. If Shadowverse had 5 elements like MTG or Wixoss, they probably wouldn't use a mechanic like this unless they could word it better.
>>
>>82976538
Forgot to mention, that Enhance abilities are non-optional and they always trigger if you can afford them.

I wish there were more physical Shadowverse promo trading cards around. There's some some really recognizable artists doing work for those Cygames people.

>>
>>82975656
Just how it's implemented mechanically. Ashes uses damage, exhaustion and status tokens. you need turn to turn tracking because everything is persistent to the end of round. on the upside it does allow for some neat mechanics, like double or triple stacking exhaustion (so it's not binary like tapping) and abilities that can move or spend any type of token.

>>82976205
Nah, that wouldn't work anyhow. Plus it's not like an FFG game where you've got tokens out the butt. There's only 3 types. So you could just as easily use coins or beans or whatever. But beside the point, there's not really much incentive to not buy the core set. If you're casual / kitchen table, it's a boardgame experience that can support 4 players. For anybody who actually gets in to it, you'll end up buying the full card pool anyway, or at minimum the first two waves.
>>
>>82977326
What threshold do you have for this? When you read the rules the common keywords and symbols and their meanings and rulings are covered. I get not flooding every card with game-specific glyphs and processes to the extreme, but understanding most the game specific terminology is the entry fee for playing right there with deckbuilding rules and turn progression.
>>
>>82977438
I think this is firmly under the "too many variables to be anything but a pointless argument starter" heading.
I mean I like >>82975080 because it's got few stats, no keywords, and rarely more than one or two rules per card. But then on the other hand you've got Netrunner which has nested rules, keywords, symbols, tokens, and game specific terms out the ass (using different terms for different players hand, deck, discard, etc), and is awesome in spite of that.

Are there reasons why you wouldn't use Go To The Top in Card Jockey?
>>
>>82977991
See I prefer keywords. They convey with a glance what the card does, allows for other effects to reference them easily, and save space when combined with other keywords or text. In the same way I don’t want a card to say, “Take one card from the top of your deck and add it to the cards you do not have to show other players,” I don’t think keywords like Draw, Haste, Lancer, Precision, etc. need to be spelled out every time. Especially if they’re keywords that alter common game rules in simple ways and generally have intuitive meanings like “can now block” or “can attack the first turn it comes out.”

I can see the need for more complicated ones to have clarifications and explanations. Wixoss not trying to simplify banish removal rules with something like “Banish 7000[\/]“ or “Banish 10000[^]” and instead just spelling out the effect for clarity, for instance.

>tfw actually had a cheesy lotus / ball lightning / bolt deck that I played to death
savage, anon. savage, but fair.
>>
>>82978573
Not really. It’s powerful against good and bad players alike and your alternatives are much more situational and don’t help you close out the game. I’ve seen Silent Assassin in some lists, but couldn’t tell you if those lists were only 01 or if 02 was out, in which case Xeno Cluster can undo your ener burn. Until that card comes out Silent Assassin just costs 1 more, doesn’t help you guard, and can’t manipulate your deck.
>>
>>82978691
I took it out but I was probably overspending my Ener to begin with. I will try to play smarter, thanks anon!
>>
>>82978820
Out of curiosity what did you take it out for?

With how powerful GTTT is and the questionable reliability of “Tap down One thing/Heal 1 if you have no life cloth” against aggro decks, Kyururi is pretty common to fight against it. That extra ener is also worth considering when you swing in.

I hope so, because we're in for a lot of them. One upshot at least is that Diva's deckbuilding freedom makes it a lot less monotonous than looking at the dominant centers would suggest.
>I like their designs and I'm trying to figure out what my first Wixoss deck should be.
At this rate they're still likely close to half a year away from releasing in English, so you may be waiting for a while.
>>
>>82978580
I think it's a question of degrees. A reasonably short list of keywords is fine. I dunno, 10, 12, something like that? the most common stuff that shows up everywhere, but not so much that people have trouble keeping track of it. some games do a good job integrating it in to the flow and can get away with a little more. and that overlaps with symbols - the same memory load for playing and teaching is being used to keep track of both. it's all part of the game mechanics dictionary.

On the other hand, I had an interesting discussion last year with one of the guys developing Ashes (brought to mind because of the OP). that game doesn't do keywords, although it does have its own magic-like cost symbol language. as a result a lot of their old cards especially in later expansions got pretty text-heavy. anybody who remembers old-days MTG, same kind of thing. novels. one of their goals with their 2nd edition (which was launching at the time) was to cut the amount of text way down. to the point that they just established hard rules saying "text box will be only size X, font Y, and so many words", and still not introducing keywords. but what I thought was interesting was this dude's take on that was he didn't think of it as a constraint. basically said it kept him honest as a designer. like if something didn't fit in the text box, instead of just bulldozing through and reformatting, or cheating it with keywords, it would force him to think of a more elegant way to get to the same effect.

What also might be notable is not often you see their Assists. I remember seeing a lot of Deus for a sec, though I don’t know if that’s changed.
>>
>>82980085
I think Deus is really strong, but she also seems to be the favoured center. She's still not as strong as Lion or Madoka, so while I gather there's nothing wrong with running her, she's not a must-play, and more of a personal choice. Also, her self-mill likely leaves her a bit vulnerable, as milling seems like a pretty strong strategy at the moment.

You don’t have to convince me too hard to make a Deus deck.

But that’s interesting to know. I really hope that even as power gaps across some of the centers widen, people don’t just gravitate to the absolute top tier LRIG. Maybe Diva is different but old locals in Japan had all the LRIG, but just Mayu and Piruluk.

desu my community is full of awesome people and the occasional rage usually lasts all of one round before he goes back to normal and apologizes for his behavior.

Our community is pretty close-knit though; basically as soon as a new player shows up we collectively make sure that they have a good time, and basically take turns showing everyone the ropes. Nobody has that hypercompetitive no-fun-allowed mindset, but we all play in pretty competitive events and have each other's back when it comes to letting people borrow cars, booking hotel rooms for Callings/Nationals, and carpooling for larger events, especially for the students and poorer guys in our group. It's been pretty comfy.

Sorry to hear your locals suck, but gotta do what you can to foster the same atmosphere you want, you know? And that goes for every game. We haven't had too many grognards join our group but we generally try to befriend those that do and make them feel welcome; if you treat people with kindness and provide a welcoming and friendly atmosphere, they're less likely to sperg out about it and lose it.

Friends and I will mostly get angry at our decks and move onto the next game. Hell we don’t even do that anymore, and kind of treat our losses as a fun calamity to ride out. Still getting to know some locals though. Your group sounds great.

Think I legit raged one time during games. A three-player L5R game where I got ganged up on and acted like an ass because of it. Literally what I endeavor not to be when losing at children’s cardboard rectangles.

i know it's a late reply but i already wrote this down so i'll post it anyways
sure, a Burst in Guilty Gear or BlazBlue can be used as a get-out-of-combo-free card, but a) there are Burst-safe combos that let the opponent block or avoid your Burst, and proceed to punish you for doing it, and b) you can incorporate bursts in your offence, sacrificing your defensive fallback to gain momentum, a combo extend or a bigger Super move that can win the game.
if you can have both of the above while also having it be a "comeback mechanic", then it might work, but honestly i've no idea how to do that in card games with decks. It could work in BattleCon style games, where most of your options are available to you, and the rest will be available after a rotation/cooldown, but that's because BattleCon was designed with fighting games in mind.

There are other ways to make a comeback mechanic for card games, though. See also Shield triggers/Life burst/CNT and other names for "do thing when you see this card while taking damage, but you can't have too many of cards like this in the deck". But that has it's own problems, you're forced to use cards as a life resource one way or another, and randomness can fully screw you over and give you only 1 burst card in your 7 life cards, while your opponent will get 5 or 6, and so on.
Ideally, your comeback mechanics should work together with the rest of your mechanics, and not feel tacked-on as just a way to help noobs not die too fast. And so the way you implement that will depend on the rest of the game.

Defense reactions do help, but unless she has Singing Steelblade she can only add 3 damage per card in hand/resource. On a naked attack for 3, you can just take it and she'll be forced to either pop Bolters or get no value from Glint. On a Warriors Valor turn, you can usually overblock by 3 and be safe, though just keep her damage potential with Ironsong Response in mind.

If you're aggressive, you can just not block and race her to turn off all of her reprise effects. Obviously, d-reacts are super useful as well. If Dori attacks without go again and with no threatening on-hit effects, force her to use her cards in subpar ways to get the second hit in.

Obviously, as a newer player, this may seem daunting. Dori is pretty difficult to learn to play against but once you do she'll be predictable on 90% of your turns and really have to work for the 1st counter.

I like the pressure, and more discard is appreciated. With my LRIG deck leaning towards defense it’s nice to be able to (slowly) remove problems while slapping at their hand, setting up other turns that Hanpanai or RANDOM BAD can really lay into them. Although it does feel bad to down and freeze and Arc or Zhao with a burst only to not be able to target them with Bradamante.

I’m gonna try leaning on the 5k and 10k SIGNI more than Zhao Yun, since spells can snipe her anyway along with a few level 3s and I want to keep my ener flexible as possible. Bradamante could probably be run at 2 or 3 to lean harder on Zhao (or use less than 8 vanillas) but I like the option she gives right now.

Mazica Party. There is a wand thing that is used to reveal a hidden rarer form on some cards. I’m not sure wether it works like a scratch card or wether it removes a printing layer, but either way it is probably a nightmare for those that want to collect them all in mint condition.

Summon & Magic. The card numbering system for Summon & Magic is strange. It’s 3 letters that relate to the contents of the card (like RAT on cards with rats or ART on artefacts) and then an 11 digit number. The first 8 digits seem like they might be a date but I’m not certain.

These are no rarities in Summon & Magic and so no rarity breakdown for a pack.

The marketing I’ve seen for it seems to mainly show children playing so I think it’s definitely marketed primarily towards young children.

I’m not too familiar with Battle Spirits’ rules. From what I understand games resource system is called cores. These are used to summon Spirits, play magic cards and a number of other things.

One of the ways you can use cores is to level up the Spirits you have on the field. You have to have enough cores on a spirit to maintain their lowest level otherwise they become depleted.

There is an official guide to the rules in (slightly broken) English available on the website at:

Can someone explain to me how Flesh and Blood is only 4.75 sets in and already has the same amount of cards banned as fucking yugioh had after 10 sets?
Are they playtesting at all? They literally have one set worth of generic cards and their system makes sure that non-generics are heavily compartmentalized so compared to yugioh and even mtg the number of possible interactions are severely limited and yet ToA exists the way it does. HOW?

Admittedly Yugioh had waaaay more ban worth cards, Konami was (and still is) largely just retarded.
I think the FABcope explination is that FAB was designed to be a competitive game from the git go, while Yugioh wasn't even supposed to be a real game originally.
Like Pot of Greed was broken by design from day 1. It should be a 3 copy auto-include in every single deck in existence, its just no one really cared back in the day.
I think you have to remember that Yugioh's first set by modern standards was essentially unplayable. Like 90% of the cards were completely useless and Summoned Skull was arguably the best monster in the game.
FAB's first set alone has more depth than the first 10 Yugioh sets do.
>>
>>82994635
>Are my expectations just too high?
Maybe this? Not every game has the same conservative design as Wixoss, and the game style has only a handful of iterations over 20 years where monster games could have a lot more design examples. Combine that with having fewer resources than some other companies to playtest and catch anything.

>>82994747
>FAB's first set alone has more depth than the first 10 Yugioh sets do.
Admittedly “being better than YGO year one” is up there with “doesn’t have lands main deck” as far as being hurtles not worth mentioning at this point.
>>
>>82994747
Ok, I can agree to some extend but what do you mean by debth?
Yugioh already had gravekeepers, spirits,sangan/witch, DD,xyz and chaos at that point so mechanically there already was quite a lot to keep track of.
But sure the meta was mostly 2 or 3 decks in a couple different flavors with a lot of auto include cards so I see your point.

I get the point he is trying to make and I do agree but yugioh got its first banned list in 2004 not in 2002 and I am too autistic to let this generalization stand.

>>82994859
This is a pretty good take too.

I concede that my expectations are probably just too high - The game and LSS was really oversold by our LGS owner and I obviously have to temper my expectations some more.
>>
>>82994894
>Ok, I can agree to some extend but what do you mean by debth?
Yugioh gameplay was and is relatively linear. It's not that there isn't a lot for keep track of, it's that the things you're keeping track of are fairly straightforward. There are a lot of "correct" plays in Yugioh that you don't want to deviate from ideally.
A good example, in the mobile game Duel Links, you can pretty much have the AI build a deck for you and then pilot that deck at like 80% efficiency. It makes mistakes but it's going to be doing pretty much the same combos as you would be doing manually.
The depth in FAB is less about the number of words on a card and more the fundamental mechanics of the game. There's a decent amount of complexity just in deciding to defend with a card or eat the damage.
Part of why Briar was so busted was that she didn't have to make those hard choices in defending compared to the other heroes. Something like Briar wouldn't be busted in Yugioh, they'd just release new cards until every single hero played that way.
And I'm unabashedly admitting this is pure FABcope.

Take this as the words of a filthy cardgame casual, but roll with the punches and have fun. If the bans end up really affecting your enjoyment, or deck, or engagement with the meta, or whatever, stop playing or just find a way to play in a way that isn’t making the game unfun for you. Or take a break. Take a step back and do something else, and don’t let stubbornness or sunk cost keep you in a hobby you’re not enjoying when there are so many people who burn out of something they’d still like if only they gave it some breathing room.
>The game and LSS was really oversold by our LGS owner
Expectations absolutely ruin things, and people often believe their opinions to be subjective truth of quality and universal enjoyment and… well yeah that can really skew how you feel about something when it turns out to not be what you wanted.
>>
>>82995291
Very good point, while there was some descision making in every iteration of ygo I played my mind never once went on autopilot playing fab.

>>82995459
You are absolutely right. Sadly Flesh and Blood is not very casual at my LGS. So taking a step back it is.

Just to explain where I am coming from because I realized how frustrated I was when I made my original post. I chose yugioh as a negative example and to inject some hyperbole because at the end of the day I expected more from a game that is clearly aimed at Spikes. Expanding on the Briar example: I strongly believed Briar was working as intended because playtesting would obviously have revealed that she was eating her cake and having it too.
LSS has admitted to not really testing seeds and duskblade and no one at my lgs likes to play ToA sealed/draft so either LSS tests at a much higher/lower level or the sealed/draft focus is bs too.
Thanks for providing my unpaid anonymous therapy session.
>>
>>82995670
I think your point about *why* they had to ban them is pretty fair. Bands like Seeds and Ball Lightning are understandable because they're more overpowered due to just being a bit too strong.
But Briar, Drone, and Duskblade all are the kind of things youd expect to get caught in QA, yeah. Duskblade is kinda fair because they fully admitted it just wasn't caught by QA. But Briar works the way you'd expect her to and Drone seems to directly go against their design philosophy pretty obviously so idk what that's about.
>>
I'd actually be interested in Gate Ruler if you didn't have that Gate Realize bunch of Faggots.
>>
>>82995847
but then you just have ikeda, the man who homogenized force of will by designing Reflect/Refrain
>>
>>82995775
I give Drone a pass because WTR is the first set and they chose to ban it after much debate rather than due to a single deck being dominant because of it (though Fatigue Ira used it to great effect).

Briar and Duskblade are definitely development issues. Note that both Briar and Chane were developed by the same developer, so it's probably an oversight issue - they need more heavyhanded checks and balances within their design team so that this stuff is caught ahead of time. FAB's balance rests on a knife's edge, so they should really be spending more time on development in the future.

I don't think the two are remotely comparable gameplay-wise. It shares some similar concepts on the surface level, but it plays completely differently. The other anon mentioned its card pool, and the unfortunate reality that Magic's deckbuilding is unmatched because of it. That being said, if you like having lots of decisions and more risk/reward valuation turn by turn, you'll probably like FAB.

I think it's better, but the game does have it's haters, both reasonable ones and autistic spergs.

From my experience other games are fine with a certain level of dominance. FaB might have quite the sensitive trigger when it comes to banning.
Most recent example I can think of is in Cardfight Vanguard where two decks each represented more than 30% of the meta. Many players complained but we got no bans, instead the meta corrected itself with subsequent set releases.

Literally a different game and the two systems are barely comparable.
I like FaB (Classic Constructed) because it's grindy and interactive.
I like MtG because it's... fuck I actually can't even remember anymore. I grew up with it, okay? I like it. So far I still enjoy casual sealed and multiplayer more in MtG.
>>
>>82996669
>I grew up with it
This is one of the biggest reason among my friends group.
Nostalgia is one hell of a drug. It's telling that when I convince them to try another game they then themselves ask to play it again.
>>
>>82996669
sealed magic is the best magic, and the best sealed
>>
>>82996721
I value art very highly in tcgs and (for western games) magic's still on top as far as I'm concerned, even though I'm disappointed with it. It's a meme to praise FaB's art, but I just don't think it's there yet. There's some good stuff but also a lot that looks like fucking every other "modern fantasy" product or worse a cheap mobile game. Terese Nielsen when?
The art in magic also used to be varied and interesting. But they've chosen to go down the homogenization path for a "more recognizable brand". Normies love that I'm sure, so I guess it's the right choice business wise. The people I used to play with always loved the dull, technically proficient "realistic" art.
>>
>>82996546

>I like MtG because it's... fuck I actually can't even remember anymore. I grew up with it, okay? I like it. So far I still enjoy casual sealed and multiplayer more in MtG.
I think that neatly sums up most peoples' feelings on magic. It's got size and nostalgia going for it, nobody can contest that. And it's not totally fair to MTG to point out all the areas other games surpassed it, because they had the benefit of learning from its mistakes.
These days MTG isn't really best at anything except being large. You want a tight 1v1 experience, there are games that do that better. You want something built around draft, or good multiplayer, or PVE or whatever? there are games that specialize in all of those things. Magic kind of tries to do all of it, without exceeding in any particular area.

>>82996787
That's kind. old days art for MTG could vary pretty widely in tone and quality, but there was a ton of GREAT art. you're right that that's an area they've got little competition in. these days, eh, I can take it or leave it. there's some decent stuff here and there, but I suspect at this point the main thing separating them from FAB is how much dosh they're throwing at the digital art sweatshop.

>>82996167
>>82996203
>The other anon mentioned its card pool, and the unfortunate reality that Magic's deckbuilding is unmatched because of it.
I'd actually make that a little bit of a black mark. Like if you mean magic's deckbuilding is unmatched in the sense of flipping through binders and going "oh, I forgot about that shit!" all the time, then sure. Which is fun in like Eternal Dollar type formats where you're actually playing vast swathes of that card pool and can get away with pulling out some suboptimal dark horse cheese decklist every week. The reason I'd call it a black mark is I don't think it is unmatched in more competitive settings. Magic's got a cardpool of 25,000 cards, and the depth of its deckbuilding isn't noticeably greater than games with 250.

It's because they were popular in MTG. The first company to make mats was the spellgrounds ppl, even before sleeves were a thing. Soon MTG players were carrying them around to events and getting them signed/drawn on by artists. Makes untouched vintage mats a bit rarer, but the mats with old art with the date, or featuring dead artists or obscure artists who don't do much anymore are rare and sought after too. (You could still find affordable spellgrounds in the 2010s at IRL events for big games cuz it's hard to sell and evaluate the value of as a store. Seen all kinds go for below 100 at regionals.) Anyways, Because of that popularity and cross play, YGO scene soon copied them, and in the late 2000s and early 2010s, it happened that a lot of top YGO players all used them and became iconic in that scene. Because most TCG players come from one of those two games the tastes carried over and spread, and soon other companies were making their own cloth mats for those who couldn't get a spellground or for those that wanted something similar but different. This also made the spellgrounds more sought after though, because they are seen as the OGs. It's kinda like buying the Vans branded slip on shoes instead of the 10 dollar shoes from the discount store that are very similar, or still choosing the original shoes over the newer, visually similar shoes with improved support etc. just cuz of the brand. I only have my spellgrounds cuz I miraculously got it for 25 bucks from a clueless seller on japanese mercari.

That was poorly worded. I'll rephrase it:

The franchise just got more experimental with its formula and even at its most Yugioh(Link Joker) still manages to be significantly different from the rest
>>
>>83002977
I think it's mostly because of the way they go about it. As far as I know back when V started they promised they were going to do things better this time and wouldn't be rebooting again, then lo and behold they did it again a few years later. Personally I got into the game with Overdress and I like the game but if they decide to reboot again after this I'm out.
Helps that I essentially get all my cards for free. Don't know how well known it is but vanguard cases are EASY stonks. I buy a case for myself every set and, thanks to the set rates, selling all of the excess cards basically gets you all of your money back. Hell I'm probably in the black despite keeping full playsets of every single nation and lots of SPs thanks to how retarded dbt01 prices were and the DSRs I've been lucky enough to get.
I went all in on a master case for the upcoming set just based on looking at japan's single prices, they're sky fucking high for everything. Obviously cracking, sorting and shipping is work but it's fun to me.

The first rotation always causes the biggest uproar, that's been the case over two decades now.
Pokemon was massively impacted by its first rotation, smaller games that try to rotate before reaching critical mass end up dying.
In Vanguard's case it didn't help that their first rotation was used to nostalgia pander and print new version of older cards.
>You can't play with your favorite cards anymore

Yep. Same reason the bootleg DMG deck box from max protection from the mid 00s is worth hundreds despite being literally a rip off of a character and having reprints from the same bootleg manufacturers. And why event today people overpay on player choice sleeves despite them being mid tier generic sleeves compared to a modern dragon shield. People attach a certain weird mix of nostalgia and prestige to these things, like "back when it was good." I could see the same thing happening in FOW or other semi popular games (like using old school early promo FoW mats or using the Pentagram dice from the lapis starter decks etc. I’d say it’s already happening with FoW ARG playmats like the ARG Zero valentines mat)
