Note to anons: The first magnet is a big repo of 40k GW games until early 9th. All RT to 8th is there.
The second is a repo of all classic White Dwarfs and other goodies like the rare Citadel Journals

Please seed them! Those are pure gold and 40k history.

Why does this need to be a general?

because there's enough interest in it and it's different enough to modern 40k that trying to discuss it in the 40k general always results in arguments

Post cool campaign ideas
>>
>>82969766
Having the 4th edition book was such a pleasure when it came to giving me ideas for small skirmish games and all that alongside other game systems.
>>
>>82972494
Like a Kill Team Game to disable a planetary missile silo that will influence a BFG game that influences a 40k game by giving the winner a free orbital strike?
>>
>>82972700
Yeah a lot of that stuff is awesome. It really captured my imagination with all of the stuff they showed off even if it was just a new, fun way to interact with the table and your models like vertical terrain and special rules for that stuff.

Other systems that aren't 40k like Spectre also have some really cool rules that could work for some 40k houserules.

>>82972465
I wish I had some. I think my "ultimate" campaign idea would have been to replicate a game like L4D but in miniature format, maybe with things like allowing models to pick up wargear around the area like a deathmatch-style thing. Small band of dudes have to progress through an area while completing objectives and the like.
>>
>>82972758
>L4D but in miniature format
I saw once in Dakka Dakka rules for Dawn of War 2's The Last Stand mode in tabletop. You could check it out.
>>
>>82972785
I had a funny feeling that someone would have written up rules for that gametype eventually, it sounds pretty wicked. I'm undecided whether it would have small squads or a singular dude.

I guess it might be difficult to cram a game like L4D into such a format but I think it sounds fun.

CARRY THE EMPEROR'S WILL AS YOUR TORCH
>>
Has anyone played this? If it's fun I might print a bunch of paper tanks.
>>
>>82972785
>>82972758
My brother made a L4D for table that we played with his friends. We each got a 150 points to make ourselves a Space Marine using the Captain profile, except we also had access to all special and heavy weapons, and had to navigate our way through a taiga forest to an industrial outpost. Once there we had to hold off several waves of nurgle zombies before rescuing a tech priest and making it to the evacuation zone. It was really fun, but jump packs are super over powered in it, as they could basically get out of any corner so maneuver didn't matter as much. My dark angel plasma cannon guy got fucking murked because I couldn't fire on the move and my damage output was low because of it. Couldn't retreat and shoot like you do in L4D.
>>
>>82973321
I think that idea sounds absolutely excellent anon, it's unfortunate that there were some winning combinations that were sleeper picks. If I were to put my idea to paper I would try to balance out more of the picks, maybe using the KT 2021 rules with some extra stuff tacked on. I would also want to try to include every army I can.

>>
>>82974299
Torrenting software like qbittorrent I think.
>>
>>82973353
It was great fun, but unfortunately was only a one off. If I was to recreate and run it anew myself I would increase the wound count on PCs, or maybe add some kind of Fate point mechanic like in LotRSBG, as it was possible to die in one round of close combat, and almost certainly in two if you got mobbed and hadn't taken artificer armour. I would also up the rate of fire on non blast/template weapons, and double or triple the ranges on guns. Using variable movement speeds would also be useful, as it was too easy to get blocked off by the zombies as they moved at the same rate as you in 4th when we played it. We were allowed to leave combat though as we were all given Hit & Run, which helped, and had an equivalent of Overwatch, and the ability to fire weapons into combat.

Only two guys and the techpreist made it off the board out of the five guys playing, but it could have easily been fleshed out further had we decided to continue playing it. My brother didn't like being the DM, so we went back to our normal 3v3 6000 point snafu-fest games we always played.
>>
>>82974927
Yeah I think one problem with that system would have to be the fact that someone would be stuck playing DM. That being said there are games that go around this in a really effective way like the "AI" system in the Fallout miniatures game. I'll have to keep some of those ideas in mind. I think the newer editions might be a good baseline for the game but I also like the KT system and older statlines.

Speaking of LotRSBG, I ran a deathmatch-esque game for that a few times that was just ridiculous. Everyone had one model that could pick up wargear scattered around the board; there was even a cave troll with a platform on his back that you would have to wrangle around. The best part was playing it on the LGS's Helms Deep table.

As someone whom got into 40k 5 years back, I kinda am fond of oldhammer stuff, as game at times was pretty fun and minis were nice.
Also like it because it's a lot less "problematic" since a lot of both bad and very /pol/tardy players are seemingly afraid of oldhammer like devil is of holy water.
Thus nowdays second end is my second most played edition of 40k, and while I do find it fun, it's kinda ironically also complex in all the right areas.

Why do they do this? When I first heard of the Warhammer Plus thing I thought "well, if that pdf vault has good scans of all the old books and White Dwarf issues then it's kinda cool". And then I discovered that they only had the nuWD and gimped versions of the 7th ed codex supplements. What's the point, then?

I used to buy White Dwarf religiously (had all from approx 75 to 300ish) but stopped when I realised that they no longer encouraged conversions, scratch builds or terrain making. I understand the utility of buying a terrain piece from time to time but that's not what the hobby is to me.

>>83004434
These days I play smaller games on smaller tables (3'x3') because that's what is around. I've just moved to a new town though so once I find a new player group I'll aim to get them to go more retro.
>>
>>83004545
Fairly decent with the main models; rangers, grav platforms, war walkers, striking scorpions, fire dragons, dark reapers, most (maybe all) phoenix lords, some (not all) farseers and warlocks. Does not have the original swooping hawks (ie the best ones) or howling banshees. Doesn't have a good range of exarches.

>>82976335
Dark Millennium is a literal ripoff with no miniatures inside.

I think it made sense back in the day though, as it was truly an expansion that catered to players who wanted to get more out of the game, coupled with the fact that you didn't have to keep up with a stack of other supplements like in later editions. That said, you're right in that I wouldn't encourage people to pay scalper prices for it to complete their collection, and only get it if it's a decent price (and if you're actually playing second ed).

One time an old player dumped a chunk of old models in the bits box of the game store I lived near at the time. Some beautiful stuff, nabbed some old terminators, beakies, an eldar I can't identify.

One of my big regrets was the tyranids I had to leave behind. But I could only take so much, and they were fragile plastic things - a few had broken just sitting in the bits box.

If you dont mind a bit of paint stripping you can find large numbers of 2nd edition space marine tacticals cheap, looking at joblots on ebay can net you entire armies. The current blood angel to dark angel army i posted earlier cost a total of £70 but it had extras like complete death company and another metal dread and couple of tactical squads i stripoed sold separately and made the total cost back so in theory its probably cost £20 for all you see in that pic

I'm quite surprised that no one has retrocloned an old edition of 40K (or some mix of older editions, like 3-5) along with an attempt at a stable army meta. There are a few threads in dakkadakka with people doing that, IIRC one it's called "prohammer" (I know, it's cringey). A 4-5th ed. ruleset cherrypicking things from 3-7th. Interesting discussions about the merits of each edition rules, too.

Renegade scout is indeed really good retroclone, and overall one of my go to systems to play since it's basically good mix of fun and simplistic/complex rules.

I recently came into possession of an old pewter splatta kannon. I was wondering if people find it generally agreeable to drill the barrel on it, as is the norm for any models I make, or if I will have to deal with somebody whining that because they didn't know what a drill was in 1991 it means that any drilled barrels are "inauthentic"? Either way, looking forward to painting it to add to my (rather modest) oldhammer ork force (mostly 2nd Ed and Gorkamorka).
>>
>>83025385
i tried to drill a metal barrel once. never again.
>>
>>83025385
Drill them, they're a detail that make minis look better. The only con is lowering resale value, maybe.
Old hammer/middlehammer aesthetics are more about the painting style.
>>

>>83025541

>>83025776
Funnily enough, the guideline on the mini is already not a perfect circle. I settled on drilling it out close to center, then widening the edge of the barrel to match the sloppy original circle. If I finish painting it while this thread is up (or a new thread is made) I will post it then.

Guy who has sent a bunch of old Warhammer to a certain someone here. I'm currently trying to rewrite for the second time a rule set for 40k that takes design cues from 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 8th, and 9th and blend them into a cohesive whole. There's things I love and hate about all these editions, so I trying to bring all the things I love, smash em together, and smooth it over into an alternate turn system that prioritizes fun(in the "crazy rules and strange shenanigans" way) and balance(on the "no, this unit is not going to be king for a month before being needed into uselessness next month" way).
One of the hardest parts was to find a perfect way to do vehicles. Gotta make it so that a lucky lascannon shot won't completely obliterate a massive knight turn 1 because of critical damage tables, but also not make vees into shitty characters. I think I have a system down packed for them now, strange hybrid of 2nd, 4th, and 8th. Codexs not even started yet, refuse to touch them until the core is sound, but I have ideas. Orks, for example, will be a lot like the 3rd Ed codex and the two books they got in RT.
Also there's going to be no primaris period. End of rine. Rine ends here.

If you're going to ditch Primaris, I'd strongly suggest ditching Knights (and all other lords of war + flyers) at the same time. Retrohammer is great for its simplicity: heroes, infantry, vehicles, walkers. Limit the size of the vehicles on the table, and you'll limit the impact of single lucky lascannon shots - nobody's going to lose much sleep over rolling badly and losing a Rhino or Predator.
>>
>>83034389
Yeah, but... I like Knights :(
They might have a points limit to take, ie, may only be taken if your game is 1500 points or higher
>>
>>83034516
That could be a good solution, or something like the old FW books: it's an optional extra, only to be used in games if both players agree to it.
>>
>>83026098

>>

It's how it works in 2nd ed, knight has to be quarter of your points and you have to warn other player in advance before even gathering that you will be using one.

Been getting into playing older editions (currently preparing for some games of 4th edition with 3rd edition codexes) and I have an old armorcast reaver titan currently disassembled in a box. Was wondering if reaver titans had any rules in something like a chapter approved anywhere. Was thinking of returning the old beast to the table.

Armorcast did do Datafax for all their models, which they included with the kits and in their own Inquisitor Magazine. They were in the same league as Citadel Journal rules, technically legit though you'd not got away with them at Games Day

"no"

Yep that's how it should be.
you can bring your titan when we play apocalypse, leave it at home for regular games, and leave named special characters for big narrative games based around them.
>>
>>83043057
why does how much your opponents army cost matter? i just want cool models on both side of the table to make a cool looking battle and involving a titan would make for a cool story.

ebay is so rife with resellers, where you guys picking up old models at decent rates?

been looking for some original genestealers and the 6th edition plastic wfb zombies but can't find any.

Tbh just looking for any marketplace with older models.
>>
>>83043781
ebay is always a good option. Even if there are scalpers etc, there is also always somebody getting rid of a collection etc.
Then you got classified and local commerce. If you got a bunch of local gamestores it's worth checking for ones with old inventory. That means don't try GW stores, try independent retailers. If you get lucky you can get some 2nd edition stuff in original shrink wrap.

>>
>>83043451

Titan's aren't as cool to play with as you think. Unless you are playing a big enough game (like apocalypse), it tends to make games very one sided. At lower point values, most armies wouldn't be able to bring enough firepower to even think about hurting a titan like that. For casual pick up games with others, its not that great.

For more planned games among closer friends? Go to fucking town with whatever list building you want. But, I imagine most people wanting retro 40k, at smaller point values, probably want a traditional FoC with 1 HQ, 2 troops, plus a few other slots filled to get to ~1000-1500 points. None of this lords of war and fliers bullshit.
>>
>>83044059
As someone who uses 3D printed stuff, no it's really not, the wonky mold detail old metals get is not same as what 3D printers can do right now, also resin as material is kinda shit to be honest. Not nearly as fun or easy to work with as old metal or even old plastics.

Yeah that's the idea. Superheavies and characters will be locked behind certain sizes of battles(why come Creed on a patrol?) as more of a strong suggestion, with it specifically stating you may ignore this limit if both agree, just as with taking the thing in the first place.

>>83043057
Exactly. if you bringing a 5000 point model to a small skirmish you're a cunt, and if you're playing a huge 25,000 point apocalypse game you're a cunt if you're not letting your buddy pull all the checks and bring out the crazy cool center piece model. Of course, y'all can cook up a game where it's an army vs a titan, that might be fun enough to merely ignore my rule.

>>83043657
God damn dude that's fire. Based heavily on the second edition imperial fortifications, yeah? Did you build it yourself or follow instructions?

>>83044127
Never played with or against a titan, let alone know anyone who owns one, but I can imagine it being hard to manuever due to how big it is compared to the board and all that.
Will agree with the appeal of retrohammer being smaller but more granular combat, and that's awesome. I'm trying to strike a balance for the system being able to handle kill team size all the way up to apocalypse size. Sort of ruleset within ruleset, like how 4th did kill team: a permutation of the core rules with some bits thrown in. Never understood the hate for flyers though. Airplanes are dope. Live To Fly, Fly To Live, Do Or Die AAAAAAAACES HIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGH I will admit they've been handled pretty poorly in every edition However.

>Did you build it yourself or follow instructions?
I build it myself basing it roughly on pictures from a blog.

QUESTION!

Does anyone have a scan of Asuryani Sketchbook and Drukahi Sketchbook by Jes Goodwin?

Supposedly, the pdfs were posted in Vola before.
>>
>>83048197
I have the "The Gothic and the Eldricht - The Collected Sketches of Jes Goodwin", but I've never seen a scan of the Eldar/DE book
>>
>>83048197
That is Holy Grail of classic GW art, there are pdfs for both, but you can forget about getting them now that Vola crew is gone.

I saw Eldar scan, although I downloaded it and just deleted it since I am not really a Eldar fan. Shame, because that shit is rare now.
>>
>>83047604

My big issue with flyers is sense of scale for the game. Even with titans, most flyers outside of like drop ships and helicopters would be moving too fast to be represented by an actual model on the table.

And with the interact-ability. Needing dedicated AA units to be able to hurt them worth a damn kinda sucks

>>

There's a bunch of MEGAs I have bookmarked that I'm slowly but surely downloading from but they're far from complete (6th and 7th folders in most are incredibly sparse), but in the background book folder I haven't seen the Eldar art books, but I'll look again later. I'm trying to get as much PDFs of Warhammer as possible for the sake of posterity and keep a copy of all of it on my external with all my pirated anime. Speaking of piracy, have you ch cked the magnet links posted here and previous thread? It may be among those torrents.

>>83048600
>My big issue with flyers is sense of scale for the game. Even with titans, most flyers outside of like drop ships and helicopters would be moving too fast to be represented by an actual model on the table.
I can agree with that. Big fuckers like the Marauder Bomber or dedicated aerospace like the lightning fighter are a bit unnecessary outside of large or even apocalypse games, but most armies have some type of anti air, if not multiple options, so it's not that bad. Depends on your local meta. I'm talking about the more tactical aircraft like the Valkrye or the Stormraven or the Chinork, where they can fly around and deliver squads and/or hunt targets. Those are a wealth of coolness that would be a shame to remove.

>And with the interact-ability. Needing dedicated AA units to be able to hurt them worth a damn kinda sucks
True. It's not as bad in 8 and 9 where they have skyrocketed in use compared to even 7th, let alone earlier editions, but most people don't take anti air since they can buff their troopers' ballistic skills so much they can snipe it out of the sky, thanks to stratagems and an overabundance of auras(or, the infamous 8th tactic of anti-air flamethrowers). But it can be disastrous in an edition that didn't bank so hard on stratagems and auras, so AA units would be far more important. This could be circumvented by simply making it another "ask your opponent" thing, or quantity restriction
>>
>>83049019
I'm a data hoarder too, and I have a disk full of old GW stuff. Much like with videogames, piracy is the only way to keep old games and content around. Without it, it would be lost forever except for a few collectors. For example, they put the IA Taros book in WH+, but without any old rules and scenarios, which sucks.
The magnets do not have the Eldar art books, sadly, but they do have almost all the 6-7th books.
>>
>>83049206
When I get out of camp and back home I'll have to turn on my VPN and torrent it so I can complete my 40k collection, and composite it with the stuff I already have(if it doesn't blow my already substantial collection out the water). Like I said, after work I'll see if I can find it among the MEGAs
>>
>>83049411
I'm not the anon who asked first for it, but I'd love to see it if you find it. Feel free to ask for anything you don't have, I've got a few "rare" scans, like the complete version of IA Vraks part 3 (almost all scans lack the end pages of the story!)
>>
>>83048600
I feel the same way about artillery. Something with a 10k plus range shouldn't be represented in the battlefield unless the scenario dictates it eg, you've identified the enemy's artillery and are attacking it directly.

>>
>>83049019
>>83048600
Epic did flyers properly: they live off-table, activate to make a single attack run (taking AA fire and risking fighter interception), and then move off the table to refuel and re-arm. Even that system seems too fast for a skirmish game like 40k, though, and I'm not sure if it'd be workable within an IGOUGO system. Better to just stick to ground-based skimmers.
>>
>>83049658

Yeah, I both love and hate the basilisk. It's a cool looking model for sure, but it definitely is something that's firing at stuff significantly far away. A standard table is likely to be entirely too close to fire at.

Using it as a centerpiece in a game setup to defend it from someone trying to actually taking it out would be super sweet. You don't directly deal with it's fire that close, you deal with it's defenders.

I am pretty sure I used to have a box of old space marines but I can't find them. All I could find was an old ork and a broken skeleton. But a have a couple of old marines and I have bought some boxes of the space marine tactical squad. Always thought that the aquila mark VII was the best.

NEVER buy a finecast version of a metal model. It's always gonna be garbage compared to metal.
The only FC models you should even look at are the handful of exclusive releases before GW switched over to doing characters in plastic as well.

In my opinion the last run of regular Space Marines were some really good models, such a subtle but solid improvement on what came before - and what came before already worked well for decades. And the fact that you could use marines as old as beakies in a modern army (one person I knew did) is huge to think about.

You can find older space marines for a pittance these days with only a little digging. Hell, even before Primaris I was finding them in old bits boxes.

I have just about everything published for 40k from Rogue Trader up until midway through last year, if you anons need any specific scans let me know.

For my part, to complete my collection I need the following:
>War Zone Charadon Act 2: The Book of Fire (current available scans are rules only, missing ~40 pages of lore)
>War Zone Octarius Book 2: Critical Mass
>Crusade Mission Pack Containment
>Crusade Mission Pack Catastrophe
>White Dwarf #466 though #472
>Codex Genestealer Cults 9e

Also this one is a long shot but I'm trying to find scans of all of the old Battlefleet Gothic Magazine issues, most of the ones I've found are incomplete.

Closer to 22mm on average but it varies a bit. You wouldn't really need to make any rules changes for it to work. For a long time there was no real fantasy 1/72 but now there's orcs, centuars, ratmen, lizardfolk, dwarves, elves, etc.

Not to mention that hordes of the little bastards can be had cheap. around 15 bucks for a box of 50 is pretty standard.
