I just use Call of Cthulhu for everything.
>>82960032What was the name of Lovecraft's cat again?
>>82960048It's Niggerman, retard.Call of Cthulhu is perfectly fine for any game set right before or any time after pre-industrialization. If you wanted to use it in earlier technological eras, you might need to modify some skills, but it should still work pretty well.
>>82960032do you make the PCs roll sanity when they encounter an elf or do you reserve that for NPC races only
>>82960032You might be even dumber than DnD players.
>>82960558Only when they encounter the Welsh
>>82960032I'm going to run delta green but without cthulhu stuff and see how long it takes for them to stop assuming there's anything but my OC content involved.
>>82960298I really like the idea of Cthulhu in the Bronze Age, will probably never get to impliment it
>>82960298To this end, Cthulhu Invictus is really fun because the world is more connected to magic and ritual.
>>82961239What’s the plot?
>>82961239Are you my Handler? I thought it was made very clear that the upcoming campaign is not quite using the Delta Green lore and all the supernatural stuff has been left so ambiguous that it would be foolish to assume it was based on Cthulhu mythos.
Percentage systems are autistic and a remnant of the 80’s. Dice pools, doom trackers, downtime phases, injury locations, wildcard dice etc feel more appropriate for the era and horror in general.
You mean BRP?
>>82960032It’s called BRP and you aren’t fooling anyone.
>>82960032I use Cthulhu D20 to play Call of Cthulhu.
>>82960032CoC/DG general is right this way >>82930765Oh, it says 'horror setting general' but don't let that fool you. They only talk about CoC/DG 95% of the time.
>>82960032Good. It's a quality freaking game dude and a genuinely good generic system.
>>82961784Couldn't you just use Runequest shit as it's the same system and runequest is actually >>82962733So YOU are the butthurt faggot. It's easy btw, if you want us to talk about other shit, JUST ASK. START DISCUSSION FAGGOT.
>>82962733Don't use that general because of samefagging and "Castlevania."
>>82962392I find it super flexible, even for high fantasy stuff. I'm running Strahd in CoC right now.>>82963190I wish you could still get the generic BRP book but Chaosium hasn't made it available for sale for as long as I can remember. CoC is the closest thing to generic BRP.
>>82965956Castlevania? I'm not sure I get the reference. You mean the vid games or the god awful woke netflix show?
>>82961987>Dice pools, doom trackers, downtime phases, injury locations, wildcard dice etc feel more appropriate for the era and horror in general.Percentile vs dicepools+wild dice is a flavor choice. But injury location can be done in both. Not sure what you mean by downtime phases or doom trackers though, does it affect the dice pools in some way?
>>82961987>reeeing because a game uses D100 instead of dice pools>claims it's the percentile systems that are autistic, not you
>>82960032It's legitimately one of the best systems out there, my favorite d100.>but you can only do lovecraft!Works for any type of horror of any genre, or even pulpy non-horror action.>but you can only play in the 20s!Works for every time period you could think of.>but players always die or go insane!Overdone meme from shitty grog keepers who think if players shoot a gun then 50 shoggoths should spawn on top of them. >>82967823>but chaosium are sjws! Are they? I honestly got pleasantly surprised with how apolitical the 7e books were, at least the ones I got my hands on
>>82960032I just use gumshoe for investigation heavy campaign desu
>>82967874Stay away from Harlem Unbound then and enjoy what you have.
>>82960032At least you don't use GURPS. That would be disgusting.
>>82960558I think 0/1 San loss is appropriate for an uncanny valley humanoid that moves with robotic, fluid perfection.
>>82972908>D&D elves>Uncanny valleyUncanny valley is when they are super close to human features but something is odd about them, creatures like your pic which is literally out of Dark Crystal are just outright abominations. Even the Bogdanoff brothers looked more human
>>82960589Why? Call of Cthulhu is a BRAP based system. It takes zero work to make BRAP work for anything you want. For example, Call of Cthulhu is just BRAP with magic, SAN, and luck, none of which would significantly change gameplay if removed.
>>82960589>a percentage skill system can't be used as universalThanks for sharing you never played anything.
>>82961987>muh pools>muh downtime>muh clocks>muh injury locations>t. skull full of John Harper's cumLiterally all you had to add was bitching about sanity checks to be Harper Drone.
It's not even the best for Call of Cthulhu. I prefer the Storytelling system. Better skill system, better combat, better injury system, merits and flaws. Only thing CoC does better is madness maybe.
>>82965974Cant you just use Mythras? I'm d100 noob, it is a genuine question.
>>82973072i've genuinely never heard anyone say the storyteller system is better than anything
>>82973014Then it's no longer CoC, innit?
>>82973027If your going to do that, just be a chad and use Rollmaster.

>>82973967Left is the loss for passing the check, right is the loss for failing the check and the maximum you can lose for that event. So if a 1/1D6 appears, passing the check only costs you 1 Sanity. Failing makes you roll a d6. 6 is also the maximum you canlose from that source, so if you met 100 enemies, you'd only lose up to 6 Sanity and then you wouldn't lose any for seeing them again. Not every encounter's set up that way though. Some things like spells or nonmagic horror like gruesome murder scenes can always prompt Sanity checks if your GM wants.
>>82973835Those are two systems. Meanwhile WoD does both better.

>>82960032But could I use it to run a Darkest Dungeon style game with an emphasis on fightan, investigating and exploring lonely evil places? Basically: Ya think it would work for dark, gritty low-ish fantasy shit? I see all these rave reviews about how you can now play it in a variety of different time periods and settings
>>82974744Not really, mainly because darkest dungeon is a dungeon delving combat centered game. Even changing time period, CoC is still at core less about dungeon stuff than other games.I heard the Torchbearer RPG is pretty close to the game.
>>82975025thanks anon, I'll look into it
>>82974744Theoretically you could. Use the Pulp rules with the medieval stuff from Dark Ages. You'd need to do some homebrewing though to get all the mechanics in. There are other games that'd require less work for it.
>>82960032Knew a group when I was young that used Stormbringer for D&D style games. They called it Dungeonbringer and supposedly it fixed a lot of problems. So as Stormbringer and CoC are put out by the same people... I could see it.

It's hilarious to see these terminally online, politics is my only real interest, no game faggots out themselves so fucking hard it's not even funny.
>>82980273Saying combat wheelchairs are a moronic addition to a game isn't the mental breakdown you're trying to sell it as.
>>82973139He can and he should.
>>82980417The idea that it's coming to ruin your game and acting like it's being forced on you is.The whole point is that it's always the same types who ignore rule 0. No personality besides politics, no getting out and touching grass, and being exactly like the PS3 at launch.
>>82980638>The idea that it's coming to ruin your game and acting like it's being forced on you isAnd bitching that it's a moronic addition to a game isn't that, which is quite literally every post I have ever seen on the matter that didn't like it.
>>82980273>>82980638Whatever happened to pointing out and laughing at stupid shit? No one ever said that combat wheelchairs or muh slavree was coming for their games. No one's bemoaning that Chaosium has a sniper watching them at all times to make sure they don't use racial accents, or that Wizards wiretapped them to make sure no one in their game ever refers to orcs as evil. And no one's saying they'll never play Call of Cthulhu and that the system sucks because of Harlem Unbound. Pointing out and laughing at demonstrably false things written by an afronationalistic idiot published by a game company is different entirely. Also, no one's complaining that they're comin for er gamez, but they ARE coming for games in general. I distinctly remember threads back around 2015 where a Wizards guy or Paizo guy or someone had made an article about gender pronouns in games being important. Some anons called it dumb and mocked it, but others said it was no big deal, that they should ignore it, no one was coming for their games, etc etc, exactly what you see today. What you also see today is Wizards scrubbing their books of "problematic" content and literally trying to prevent people from legally obtaining the old versions, game companies telling people they aren't welcome in the hobby or in their stores if they wear the wrong political t-shirt, and big internet outlets calling things like Harlem Unbound or the D&D Ancestries books "essential" for playing. They have, demonstrably, come for gaming, and never forget that there are people here who post and have been posting for years that want it. The truly apolitical statement isn't "fuck /pol/tards", it's fuck politics in games in general, no politics wanted, go away. If you read a post where someone says that it's not a big deal and you should just ignore it, guaranteed they're in the crowd that wants the changes, that wants Harlem Unbound, that buys those narratives, and so on.
>>82981169And if you read someone only attacking leftist politics, you also know you're dealing with someone politically biased. I'm politically biased. Anti-SJW shit to the core. I've gotten past wanting my beliefs pushed in games though. I just want politics of ALL sorts to fuck off from gaming. That's the truly correct answer. Whether you're a nazi, a commie, a Drumpf voter, a Cunton voter, whatever, leave your politics at the door when you come to play tabletop games. Period.

>>82981197If you're playing a game set in the current world you can't be un-political without missing half the damn world. If you're playing a game about secret conspiracies you can't be un-political without missing every good conspiracy. CoC and Delta Green are almost inherently political, and work best when you lean in. The only time it is a problem are when players get mad that their real politics are not the coolguy heroic winners in a game where there are few heroics and seldom any winners. If I get the sort who can't stop being political and the sort who complains loudly when a politics happens, I have made the former work better than the ladder. For the former, the deal is you can play as rapid a conspiracy theorist you want, but they have the be the opposite of yours. Now they are invested in their character believing wrong and stupid conspiracy theories, and a Delta Green character who is 100% into obviously wrong conspiracies is a good character. Often they can't and they get booted, but those who can do well. Hell, I ran a short campaign with a full-MAGA and a borderline Freeman-of-the-fucking-Land, both of them just played borderline parodies of each other as Agents, and it worked okay. What I have never made work is players who get mad at politics, because they are never nearly so un-political as they think they are. One bitched about one mayoral candidate being corrupt in a game because IT POLITICAL IT BAD - and ONLY one being corrupt - despite the fatc that all four were corrupt in different ways. Great no-politics there, fucko. Another had some fucking bug up their ass about taxes in general to the point they would groan out loud and refuse to elaborate when players so much as checked on an NPCs tax records. Every single time I have had a player who insists they are not politics, not only are they absolutely fucking politics and can't let the fuck go, they are also smug about it and can't be reasoned with because they reject the very premise.
>>82981814Your point is insanely inept. For a genre where 99% of the content's characters are completely fictitious to the point where Handlers fabricate entire family histories for fictional NPC's, along with their individual relationships with each member of that family, I refuse to accept that the game simply would not work unless you ran it with, "President Donald Trump". Get real.
>>82981814You CAN'T separate politics from your games?Maybe that's just your personal failure, and not a major issue over all.
>>82981914I'm pretty sure he means no matter what you do, you will step on someone's toes, hence the examples.
>>82981946Why in the fuck would sit down to play games with a bunch of soft cunts? Get better friends.
>>82981814What people should do is>accept their political biases>accept that politics will always bleed into fiction, subconsciously or deliberately>try to mitigate how much that bias affects what they writeIf you're part of antifa and you write a scenario in the modern day, you're going to inevitably be influenced by your beliefs, same if you're a nazi. That's unavoidable. What you CAN avoid is letting your bias run wild to the point you're making propaganda rather than a game for people to play. That's the problem with Harlem Unbound. The dude's pretty open that he's a BLM afrocentrist type, but rather than try to reign in that bias to make an impartial-as-possible book about NYC in the 1930s, he ran wild with it and basically made an ideological manifesto.tl;dr you can't avoid politics or bias, but you can try to control it and have restraint
>>82981914Delta Green is a game that invariably invokes the machinations of the government, that before you begin requires you to choose whether you will be in the black ops team who thinks that the government and its components can be corrupt and inept but it is still the best bet for saving the country and that it is better to risk corruption than risk anarchy, or the government conspiracy militia that thinks the government is inherently too corruptable if not outright too corrupt to ever be a positive force in suppressing the supernatural and that it's fine and good to build a militia to tour the country killing anyone who uses or is exposed to the supernatural so long as it means the government is kept away from it. Literally the first thing you do when you put together a campaign is pick a choice that will set a political tone for the entire game, and if you think that you can begin a game with the direct implication that the government of [year of game setting] is obviously the solution or obviously the problem and do it without politics, you're an idiot.
>>82981814This anon speaks sense. The schizo could learn from this, if he wasn't y'know, a schizo.
>>82981169Yeah, like the threads about that sword lesbian game. I'm actually happy it exists because is exactly what I've been wishing for years "woke folks should just make their own games and leave the other ones alone"(still have to work on the "leave the other ones alone" part but it's something) but that doesn't mean we can't have threads to make fun of it>>82981628Eric Andre's been making some weird skits lately
>>82982069That's literally the game itself, and frankly DG is itself neutral because both are fucking pawns, Left, Right, you're all going to fall. The real problem comes a lot more from online crap. You'll get the HU or Combat Wheelchair or any number of truthfully small shit that's barely even relevant, and get the folks out here in the digital space talking, and hell half the time it's made for wonderfully big covers for corporate reality.Need to change something major because of a massive fuckup that took years of table play and didn't come up in your playtests. Create something to get the not actually participating masses to focus on, especially some kind of fluff, or like an adventure or setting book that's not really needed by anybody with brains.Half the reason these "le SJW" things actually make me laugh is because sometimes you'll literally have a huge glaring neon, all caps sign saying "real problem", and the faggots will focus on the crack in the wall.Saw it last year with the Weiss-Hickman vs WotC debacle, and looking back at HU, seeing a big one there as well.I mean which do you think the nogames who harp on this shit after it's old news are going to flock to, "Le Harlem Unbound writer is a BLM SJW" or, "Why the fuck is Chaosium even looking at trying to emulate something like DM's Guild to get people to basically be non-contracted freelancers," Or even the more general "why are TTRPG companies even making freelancers their product production model?"As much as it makes me sound like a conspiracy spouting Militia agent, do you think maybe we're all being played, and by all I mean everybody left, right, and center
>>82982250Actualy looked at it, and SJW shit aside, looks like an interesting system for some fun.Fuck it's going to be SJW Ironclaw or Tales of (GR 15 Won't Let Me Finish This) isn't it?
>>82982330>it's going toIt's already out
>>82982344I meant in that once shit dies down and people just actually look beyond Furry or (GR 15 Violation), it's going to be that system you can't actually discuss without some faggot coming in and somehow being more autistic of a faggot than a GURPS player.
>>82982306Or the way when WotC started making crossover cards go from non-official and only playable in casual games to official, trouney cards, they did so using The Walking Dead, a fairly burnt-out franchise by now left with only die-hard fans. Five threads a day on here were having tantrums about it, which fair enough, but none of them were focusing on the big problem that this was a clear statement of intent by WotC that they no longer considered the setting and the game to be intrinsically linked and would be open for business for future setting compromises. Or the way people complained about the way certain Planeswalkers were too SJW or Dindu or whatever, ignoring the much more real problem underlying that - that the settings and writing of the game were no longer valued components that took work over time to craft, but mere trappings that were thing to begin with and pliable to wilful change if it meant selling another set.I have been seeing your point about the decimation of in-house or long contract writing for publishing houses, and the rise of not just freelancers but hiring inexperienced fan freelancers. It's one thing when Catalyst hires a Batteltech fanboy who turns his fanwiki entry into canon because of course Catalyst would fuck it up they fuck it up every time, but when much larger and much more competent companies seem hellbent on erasing the lines between official and fan expansions, I wonder what the endgame is. Are they looking at popular fan works and deciding that these set the bar for quality and they can easily afford to be as shit? Are they moving to incorporate fanworks into the main game because they are mad they don't get a cut and need these to be sold instead of given away so they can take one?I don't know what the fuck's going on with Chaosium. It almost seems like they don't understand people doing things for fun and assume there must be money somewhere ,and want in on the table so they can get a cut.
>>82982306tldr>x isn't happening, you're overreacting>x is happening, but you should just ignore it, it'll go away>x is happening, but it doesn't affect your game, so why complain>x is happening, but it's reasonable, only tards would complain>x is happening and you will not be missedCall it le slippery slope if you want but I've watched this kind of handwavey apologetic crap progress over the years. You're either part of it yourself or are willfully ignorant of the reality of the situation, which is that this shit will -never- stop and it will -never- be enough for the people pumping out these products.
>>82960032I just use Chronicles of Darkness for everything.
>>82974617If you weren't a critical role 5e kiddie you would have recognized the elf.
>>82981169Well, with D&D they are releasing new "PC" errata and that affects future prints. They are coming for our books. Not the specific copy you have on your shelf, but the ones in the stores. And the errata is a strong suggestion that you don't use the "outdated" copy.
>>82982917This. The problem isn't that D&D's literally coming to you and saying it'll beat you up if you don't use the errata, but they definitely are coming for games in general and doing things to prevent people from playing with the content that they deem "problematic".
>>82982457What it's always been about, more money.>>82982521Sure bud, I'm gonna be over here talkiing about how fan freelancers being the go to for content production because they're fucking cheap compared to say two known authors, while you focus on something from 5 years ago, or whatever they're doing to jangle keys for your righteous and impotent fury. Because >>82982457 got exactly what was being talked about, but you gotta keep on consooming your culture war crap to feel good.
>>82982563Who MIalee, I thought that was common knowledge, just like The Dark Crystal being a fucking movie 80s kids would have seen.
>>82982995Just like mercenaries in the modern days are cheaper than soldiers and a big part of the price drop is deniable responsibility for the nasty nasty warcrimes.
>>82978915True Detective season 1?
>>82983032Pretty much, but their crimes are massive inconcistency.Like WotC's been having to fix the problem the mercs over at Kobold Press caused in Volo's Guide for some 6 years now.
>>82982995I don't understand how many people really think that the Big Mean Transos who consist of 1-2% of their playerbase are bullying hundred million dollar corporations into changing their strategies against their will, as opposed to a hundred million dollar company making a change it had in the works for years and has invested tens of millions of dollars in, who then use a current public campaign as a pretext for a few million dollars of free publicity and a misdirect for criticism from the part of the audience who hates the change and is gullible. The worst part is how transparent it gets with people who want to be mad still not catching on. MTG's whole 'heavyset badass' stupid thing became such an effective heatseeker for the massive downgrading in the money WotC spent on card art, because a small group of people went wild over bad art of fatties be they all YAY I LOVE FATS or BOO I HATE FATS. Meanwhile MTG had its art budgets successively reduced every year for five years now despite art being one of its strongest selling points for decades, they buy fewer art pieces in general leading to more bad or unsuitable art, they use cheaper artists resulting in a surge of shit CG art of awful perspective, and the quality of briefs to artists - the 'leak' itself - went from informative but open management to pointless buzzword-heavy micromanagement from people who clearly don't know and don't care how to offer artistic direction. Two hundred threads in one month getting mad at fatties holding WotC hostage somehow, and a handful of posts pointing out the obvious degradation of the hobby is more clinical and calculated that a few fucken fatties on cards.Power doesn't shout. It doesn't need to. Fatties were shouting because they had no power, and anti-fatties were shouting because they had none either. WotC were silent because they had all the power, and turned up the noise so nobody could get a word in about the visibly degraded art quality overall in edgeways.
>>82982995Dude who cares about freelancers? You can still use stuff written by the more experienced authors, it's still there, and it's not like your impotent complaining is going to change anything. There are way worse problems with the industry right now and you should divert the entirety of your attention to these matters, don't even crack joke if it's not about the REAL problem which is clearly the fact that game companies are in cahoots with the italian mafia, russian mob, japanese yakuza and chinese triads
>>82983311One publisher saving costs on art isn't really much of a societal problem.Grievance studies gaining undue cultural influence is.
>>82960558They must roll sanity when they meet female NPCs. Female PCs roll sanity every morning and risk gaining the Hysteria condition.
>>82960032I too like to use Chaosium's garbage for things it sucks at, which is to say everything. It comes second only after using White Wolf trash.
Is CoC essentially a solved game and Cosmic Horror a meaningless aesthetic? >People are a lot more cynical/nihilistic these days and aren't perturbed if you say that humans are just apes or that science and faith won't get us anywhere, unlike a 20's person>The whole point is mystery but everyone willing to play CoC already knows what a Shoggoth is etc>The game depends on people playing along with the setting. EG it would be easy and probably smart to just burn any suspicious book, brick over that weird door in the basement, etc and move on with life. >The game has a deadly reputation so players won't invest in their characters as heavily. >>82978103TBF, 1) 90% of players just sound annoying when doing accents 2) There is a difference between hating someone with society backing you up and hating someone as a powerless individual and I think they'd be able to sell this to people if they weren't obsessed with these gotcha! moments and redefining existing words.
>>82982563Mialee is a disgusting creature like very 3e-3.5e portrait of elves
>>82985968See, this is why you need to change things up and not go with setting as written. It's all 'known' and that makes it predictable. Sure it's still deadly, but that's not the same as making it scary. Change things up, add new things, make variants. Just be sure to be consistent and have a list of the things you've changed so you don't forget. Describe what they see, smell and hear (hopefully not taste) when they encounter an entity. Never just say "you see a X". To get over the deadly reputation, have said entities go after others, leaving a trail of broken and ruined individuals. Disease, madness, twisted limbs/bones, tumors, having imagination/joy/love/fear/ect sucked out and the problems that come with it. There are worse things than dying. But it's happening to others if they don't stop it.
>>829831051st season was awesome. The hint of the supernatural is better than a bad special effects gribbly. The tension it invoked by keeping it grounded in reality, with the esoteric being used as a seasoning worked well. By never declaring if there was any real power behind the ritual, it kept things unknown. Did that guy see Rust in his dreams or did he just know that one day someone would come for him? Was what Rust saw flashbacks, or something more? Steal that stuff for your games anons. Small, could go either way type things. Keep your players guessing.
>>82983011Dark Crystal had a Netflix series recently, so a lot of zoomers got exposed to it.
>>82988335It was good, felt like something that would have come out a few years after the movie. That it was so faithful to the source material was amazing. I have no idea why they didn't make a second season.
>>82985968That's why you play it differently, and work on not being cynical yourself.
>>82981641Too late, retard. I've participated in the last five games you played. Good luck trying to identify me.
>>82985968>People are a lot more cynical/nihilistic these days and aren't perturbed if you say that humans are just apes or that science and faith won't get us anywhere, unlike a 20's personHoly shit, fuck no. Most people still subscribe to some (ultimately vain) hope that things will get better. The human consciousness has a tendency for it to ignore things it finds threatening to the ego, and those that genuinely dwell on it are considered to be mentally unhealthy by the majority. Most people don't like to think about how they'll struggle for all their lives for a goal, and even if the attain it, they still will be unhappy. Colin Wilson described it succinctly in Return of the Lloigor, and Thomas Ligotti can write shelves about this idea. Just because people make post-ironic jokes about absurdism because of Rick and Morty doesn't mean we accept it. We fled the deadly light of revelation to the continued safety and comfort of a new dark, if we've ever left it, to paraphrase Lovecraft.
>>82991517Also to add on, look at how our supposedly atheist, materialist society still has people who despite generally eschewing organized religion, subscribe to cherry-picked hodgepodges of a vague spiritualism.
>>82988642Apparently Netflix changed executives or something and they're just like ancient mesopotamian kings and pharaohs and they just erase their antecesor's work
>>82991517>(ultimately vain) hope that things will get better>ultimately vainThe physical world's doomed, but the spiritual world's yours with faith.
>>82960032I've just received a phone call, OP. I believe it's for you.
>>82991823In what way physical world is doomed?
>>82991957Sun will go out eventually, though sin will consume us long before that. The world's tainted and marred that only the Lord can repair it.
>>82980273Rule 0: It's just a word>friends: y'all wanna play Harlem Heat Cthulhus?>me: hol up
>>82973072Storyteller is so bad, even the people who publish it advise players to ignore its gameplay results.
>>82960032Just as retarded as using D&Dfinder for everything! Actually just a little bit retarded, not even close to D&Dfinder for everything retarded. I'm sorry I even implied you were as retarded as those things
>>82981693That's literally just how everyone in the south talks.
>>82992907>the people who publish it advise players to ignore its gameplay results. What? Sure it's a dice pool mechanic, but it's not that bad, right?
>>82993354Not really. Sure some southern fried fucktards do, but not everyone. Even the rednecks don't go full retard anymore. You'll still get your white trash that do, but no one wants to be represented by them, same way no black person wants to be defined by a hood rat.
>>82988642Supposedly it was supposed to be an animated series first, but then Netflix insisted on expensive Muppets. When the show aired it didn't make as much money as expected and they axed it.Executive meddling in short.
>>82981690I can read "social queues" but apparently you can't write "social cues".
