Bought a rhino caked in gs, house paint and plaster a while back for about 2 bucks. After some time in the thinner I was able clean up some of the gunk but a lot of it had been gluecaked/melted beyond what I wanted to deal with so I raided my bits box for replacement parts here and there which is why its an unholy mix of old and new rhino parts. Some anon on here suggested that I make it into an oblitetator infected tank and I had some ugly marks to cover up so I tried it. If I had to be honest I'd measure the "painting area" of the banner and then use a ruler to draw the boundary lines of the painting space on the banner on paper first and practice until you have a clear idea of what the banner should look like.

Then after that try to settle on the colours so that you have the clearest vision of how you want the colour to look like.

Of course this applies in general to painting miniatures but try to brace your hands to be as still as possible when painting the banners. Its probably going to feel like painting the eyes because the eye details being delicate and the banner freehand painting will require your hands to be held as still as possible.

Good luck, anon!

having heard a friend talk about the contents of the Dead Sun Black Sky novel that had the cursed Daemonculaba in it I can say that the flesh covered tank is rather fitting. Though the Iron Warriors really shine when they are mostly industrialized space marine renegades with a hint of chaos aesthetics thrown in.

Yeh this guy has been a wild ride of never looking quite right. He has been the experimental one for the longest time. I made his legs waay too long when I was first going at it. Then when I adjusted his leg position to be more of walking upright he got way to tall. I shortened his torso then he looked like a scrunched pug. Lengthened the torso by 30mil this afternoon and Im happy with that part. I cant remember if there are pins in the thighs and I dont want to damage my razor saw. I might look for a heavier duty one tomorrow.

This is an old picture, see the legs on the left guy and the torso on the right guy? Those are the parts. I have deconstructed this model like 3 times now, even sawed him bisectionally the other week to fix a bad tilt in the chest plate that makes the helmet (right on this picture) kinda look like he sucking in his neck like a turtle.

Thanks for the feedback btw.

i like the idea of your stuff and you put a lot of effort in but you need to consider what the dude under the armor looks like. armor makes your covered areas wider, and space marine armor is even thicker than anything irl so that will be even more prominent. look at some images of police in full riot gear, that stuff has some heavy padding to it that could help you get an idea of what i mean. also EOD bomb disposal armor, but that stuff is not useful for looking at body proportions
>>
>>82315022
Do you think the chest/torso armour is too slender? I looked at the EOD pictures like you suggested, the main thing I got from that was that the bulk of the central portion makes the limbs look shorter. I don't think Im ever going to alter the arms on the terminators, but I am working on how to make thicker legs as its certainly a week point on the models. The t4 has noticeably thicker legs than the t3 in those pictures.

>How long can you leave pewter minis in acetone? Asking for a friend, h-haha
Essentially forever. It doesn't work well to start the electrolytic reactions that lead to corrosion. The worst that generally happens is paints that have a dye rather than a pigment in them (especially copper-based pigments like Phtalho Blue and Green) will stain the surface of the model pretty strongly.
>>
>>82316285
Rattlecans?

Leave it to heat up for 10-15 minutes in warmish water. Keep the models inside. Go outside, quickly prime them, bring them inside and leave it to cure in a well ventilated room.
Rattclecan primers are tricky like that, especially white ones, but it is doable.

Thanks. It still has a long way to go. The skintone is now right, but I still need to highlight all the scales on the body, do all the boney bits and add some final touches to the wings, because it's a fairly slapdash blend at the moment. It's been fun to just paint a model without a plan in mind and see where it'd take me.

>>
>>82312053
Using regular polystyrene is always a bit tricky, since you got the entire bubble texture going. I think the basis is right, but you might want to thing about adding greebling and details.

Some particular things you could try:
- you could use spackle to cover over the outside. This could help reduce the polystyrene texture, as well as making it easier to add other detailing on it. It *should* stick relatively ok on its own, and you can sand it down later to make it smoother
- Bullet holes, tears etc etc in the walls
- Windows, as another anon suggested, or maybe slights through which people inside could feasibly fire a gun.

As for the paintjob: it currently feels a bit flat. Normally I'd suggest drybrushing a lot for buildings, because it adds lots of incidental details and chalky/dustiness, which is fairly realistic for buildings. However, that'd most likely over-emphasize the styrofoam texture here, which you might not want.

Interesting. I didn't consider that. The thing on its back is about the same size as the rat ogre itself, which was the smallest I could make it while still having it be big enough to have interesting detail and also fir the warlord with its ridiculoursly wide stance. You might be right though. I might consider trying to bulk up the ogre a bit. I need to still figure out how the thing's gonna be attached to the ogre anyhow.

I've heard green stuff world does really nice metallic pigments.

My go to metallics are Vallejo Air. Great coverage, smooth application, and the pigment is much smaller, so it looks much less flaky than, for example, GW.

>>
>>82317034
The pole needs to be the right thickness for the scale which is a pain, and the same with the dish which is even worse. The wires and paint are fine. The other issue is the pole needs to be strong enough to support the helicopter, which is very heavy.

T9A has shite balance however overall. It's just really bad base for a game and it feels balanced usually only to people who never played games that are different. So I myself just go off to play other scales for that itch.

Trying to convert my christmas grot into a freebooter pirate grot. I'm clumsy and awful but I generally have an idea of what I want

>santa hat removed to be replaced with sculpted pirate hat (possibly snip further down I'm not sold on keeping the fur and star trim)
>the antlers on the squig need cut off and replaced with a ship's steering wheel (leftover sprue parts will be the spokes of the wheel)
>the festive candle will be a red cartoony dynamite stick with "TNT" written on it
>the chrismas ornaments can just be turned into pineapple grenades
>the wire can just be barbed wire with enough pointy bits added to it

Like I said it looks like shit but am taking a break because I'm tired. If there's a secret to greenstuff sculpting or a conversion idea that would help I'd definitely be grateful for it.

Been a major /wip/ lurker for the past year or so recently I've seen alot of people updating people on their armies over multiple threads so here's a Red Corsair kill team I've been working on. I wanna make a full army of them eventually since I have an entire chaos box set unpainted.
>>
>>82318914
The biggest issue I've faced actually is basing them. I've spent like 2 weeks just making different bases and not liking them then after I finally got one I like the Vallhallan Blizzard is drying fucking green. Did some experimenting and it has something to do with the wash. Problem is even after like 3 days of letting the wash dry it still dries green and even after putting a varnish on it it still dries partly green. Does it with both nulin oil and army painter dark tone. It wouldn't be that big an issue because I could just not use wash on the base but I wanna have the models themselves dusted with snow and they have alot of wash on them too. Anyone know what I could do about this?

>Well that'd be easy but I was hoping for a more scenic option.
At a certain point you have to sacrifice the scenic option for durability. A slender, black metal rod on its own, with a few bushes or a flattened static grass pattern on the base, is WAY less-obtrusive than tying to hide the wire with a tree or something. It also makes the base less-likely to catch on or interfere with terrain.

I'm a rookie painter that wants to branch out of citadel stuff. I'm in need of a pristine white & slightly darker off-white as well as a nice bright metallic gold.
Spare any recommendations as to brands or ranges to look into? I've lost faith in citadel as my Corax White has clogged up to the point where it's no longer usable and I wasn't even 3/4th into the pot. The gold-ish citadel metallics are rather ass too.

>What minis are you thankful for?
I'm just thankful that such a hobby with a community exists in general. I get to level up from playing with plastic Legos to plastic miniatures.
Currently in the process of practicing on some EM4 miniatures before I get into painting more expensive ones like Citadel recasts.

Anyways I've washed some of the EM4 miniatures, I've heard that it is best to always wash miniatures even if they are hard plastic because sometimes washing the release agent is not part of the process. I've read that some miniature companies have release agent washing (probably automated) as part of the miniature production process, but I can't be sure what companies do that.

What I'm really nervous about is washing metal miniatures. Because I don't want them to rust. Will using a tissue paper to quickly remove the water off of the miniatures will negate any chances of it rusting after washing before priming?

Beginner/Intermediate.
The tattoos are too thick (maybe use a micropen), the eyes are too flat (use a micropen for the iris), so is the face. The muscles aremt defined enough, the horns are too patchy, and the metal of the axe too uniform.
Its a great mini, better than most you'll see. But for a competition you'll see some crazy shit that will blow your mini out of the water. Depending on the scale of the competition, of course.

I can’t claim to be an old hand at metal minis, but in the last 8 years of working with them I’ve never had a problem with rust. A good scrub in soapy hot water followed by a good rinse in hot water followed by being left to dry on a paper towel seems to be just fine.
>>
Question about brushes. How does the fullness of the belly affect the time it takes for the paint to dry on the tip of the brush? I've seen recommendations for brushes with full bellies because they hold more paint, but does it help with working with the very tip of the brush?
>>
>>82323218
Use some flow aid with your water to dilute the paint. That together with a big belly brush will solve your issue
>>
>>82323278
So the belly is at least part of the problem then? Because my current "higher quality" brushes are pretty skinny and don't have much spring to them. Kind of a pain when trying to do eyes and stuff.

Primanlets really are trannies. YWNBASM. I really hate that model, compare it to any of the real apothecaries to see the difference. It just looks like whoever was designing it had no idea what he was doing. Even this conversion of mine is better, and I wasn't particularly in good form when building and painting it.

narthecium is incorporated into the servo-arms and the pistol is the reductor (it's literally even in the name)

>>82327594
Thats not very helpful.
You can die at any moment only having 1 miniature on your backlog.
By your logic, that 1 miniature would be 'too much'.
>>
>>82326070
My favorite and most common tools are:
>Hobby knife with Excel #21 stainless blades
My only real commend here is to have two hobby knives. One with a sharp blade, the other with the now dull previously sharp one. Sometimes a dull blade is what you want.
>Art Alternatives 5x7" cutting mat.
I love this little thing, super handy and a great size.
>Lindstrom 8140 cutters (these are my go to clippers)
>Vallorbe LA2443-2 cut#2 jewelers file set
Incredible quality with really clean points, will probably get some escapement files (really fine watchmakers files) next, I bought it from ottofrei.
>Utica 775 pliers.
Best pair I have ever had, nothing comes close. oop.
>Technitool number 3 stainless anti-mag anti-acid tweezers
I have the flats too, cant remember the size number right now. Just nice quality tweezers
>Unbranded minarette #9, this is a scultpting tool
This is a great tool I use it all the time from getting paint out of pots to sculpting to smoothing plastic surfaces. Got it with 3 others in a college art store (hardly touch the other 3)
>Royal sovereign colour shapers size 0, firm
>Huot St Paul #61-80 drill index.
A must have for drilling barrels.
>Old small mint containers
My favorite thing for storing my wip bits in.
>Plano3700 waterproof organizer bins
These are my current favorite organizers, They close really tightly and their inter-bin separation is pretty good. Purity seals still slip around though if you shake it and throw it in the air. I like to cut out all my bits from a box and store them in here so I dont have piles and piles of sprues with only a few parts left on them.

Tools worthy of note:
>JLC004 Razor saw
Has a super thin kerf of 6mil. Which is nice, but the construction and shape of the blade attachment system makes using the saw unwieldy at times. I have mixed feeling about it.
>Starrett 162A pin vise
I honestly dont recommend this, the lack of palm spinner makes it hard to use.
>>
>>82327623
That's the point. Suffer not the pile of shame to exist.
>>
>>82327446

While I haven't personally ever had a backlog greater than two kits, but I'd say the most obvious issues that'd be a sign of too much backlog is lack of storage space for boxes, and/or constantly acquiring kits and hardly building any.

Sounds like you enjoy overpaying and skipping on your bitz box. Bad hobbying habit, it's always useful to have a lot of spare parts to work with. Some of my projects were a result of digging through a bits bin, box or bag and having a moment of inspiration.
>>
>>82328050
Lol, no.
Theres plenty of good paints out there, why the fuck would I risk paying for some mediocre paints when I know there are brands who are good already?
Honestly I dont know whos the target audience for those paints besides Duncan fanboys.
Everyone whos been painting for a while already has enough paints, and newbies are unlikely to know who Dunc is and are probably busy buying GW overpriced shit cause thats all they know and think its the best shit because 'its made by the dude who make the great minis'.

I get your point.
Still i would rather spend 5€ on a couple of specific bits from 3 different boxes than buying those 3 boxes for 30-40€ each, especially if its bits from mini ranges far away from those i actually collect.

Last individual bits i ordered have been some arms from Primaris Reivers and some Blood Angels Terminator heads, both things i will never use an entire kit, because of loyalists + primaris.

>>
>>82328071
This more or less.

Ducans paint might be great, or it might be some average stuff. If its great, reviews will show it, and i can still buy some pots of it if something i own runs empty.
If his paint is just "good", there is no need to get it at all. Other brands are also "good".

Besides those obvious reasons against buying something like paint blindly simply because the name of the brand is a hyped meme, the KS savings are not that great anyway. Its not like it makes a difference in the end if i pay 2, 2,50 or 3 for a pot of paint if i only ever buy 5 at most.

I only have the fours at the moment, so I can't critique the entire range, but in general I rather like them. They are gell based, so longer drying time, which makes them great for wet blending. High pigment density, which is always a plus, and they thin really well into glazes.

They also taste a lot better than scale75.

>>
Is the greenstuffworld compressor and airbrush ok for your first airbrush? It's at 120 euro shipped for both.
>>
>>82329153
I eat paint all the time while painting. Voiding the brush by mouth is way quicker than going to the paint water, swishing it and dabbing off excess moisture.

>>82329161
Starting out any airbrush is fine, because any airbrush is better than no airbrush. It's way better to fuck up shit with a 20-30 dollar airbrush than with a 200 dollar one. The only real requirement is that it's dual-action.

Regardless of how much you charge the model should be cleaned up at the very least. Cheap price = cheap paintjob, but it should still be a clean paintjob.
I don't see the point in commissioning paintjobs myself. Half the fun is being creative and getting dirty with it yourself. If you're the type of tourny player that just wants to get it over with and play, then just prime your shit and slap a mandatory minimum of 3 colours on it and call it a day.

Got some old Citadel paints in tiny pots. They come from old sets that came with 6 paints and 5 miniatures (see image). I'm pretty sure the numbers on the top can be used to identify these. The numbering scheme is consistent, i.e same colour = same number. I am confident on what three of them are:
GW030 = Ultramarine Blue (now Altdorf Guard Blue)
GW048 = Chaos Black (now Abaddon Black)
GW051 = Skull White (now White Scar)
The rest, however, are ambiguous. Has the meaning of these numbers ever been published anywhere?

Thinning metallics. Yes/no? Water or other medium?
>>
>>82329692
Is there science behind why this happens?
Why is e.g blue so easy to get coverage with compared to white or yellow?
Is it some wavelength bullshit?
Genuine question.
>>
>>82329870
In part it's opacity of the paints, in part it's how much pigment's in them.
Generally, all "pure" colours are very translucents. Pure blue, pure yellow, pure red, etc. The more you add white or black to them, the more opaque they become and the better they cover. Pure yellow is very translucents so covers badly.
On the other hand: pigment density a strong factor in this, and generally yellow paints are less pigment dense, because yellow pigments are more expensive. You can see this very easily outside of miniature paints, where they allow different paints to have different prices, and yellows are often quite a bit more expensive.
>>
>>82329907
>yellow pigments are more expensive
Then why are bananas so cheap?
>>
>>82329822
Thin them a bit. But, honestly, mixing metallics with matt paint helps give it better coverage.

Mix grey with silver, brown with gold, tan with brass, etc.
>>
>>82329822
Yes. Depends on what you want to achieve. Mixing in other mediums that aren't explicitly metal mediums will knock the shine out of them, which I wouldn't recommend for highlights.

I mean...there is only war. Stepping on a dead body is really the last thing anybody would be worried about in a battlefield environment, which this type of extraction represents.

Seems like an odd thing to be sensitive about when Space Marines are literally child soldiers turned into killing machines, except most children die during selection or implantation of extra organs. Stepping on a corpse pales in comparison.
