I never insinuated he can't or shouldn't print those models merely commenting on the quality of the sculpts.
He can print what he wants and I can critique what I want.
>>
>>82304533
That's not a crisp print however it's rather rough especially on the helmet and the right arm. Slowing down will definitely improve your quality. Also it seems a bit on the overexposed side of things.
That said you did a good job on those skin tones, really digging the blending and overall tones.
>>
Normally, when I print I crack open a window to improve the ventilation in the room I'm using, but now that winter is approaching that's not really an option anymore. Is there anything I can do to help keep the room well ventilated now that I can't expose it to the outside?

If it helps, the room is pretty big, it's a den area that takes up basically almost half of my house's basement and has an attached kitchenette for even more room for air circulation, theoretically.

I just printed out some Raven Twins hellhounds I suppported myself. The print finished, and there was nothing stuck to the fep, but the models are a bit disfigured. The details are there as normal, but some of them are missing certain features. One of them is missing a leg, another had a half-printed foot, some had half printed horns.
What was the cause of this? Did I fuck up the supports? I cleaned everything up and I'm currently doing the test to see if there's any holes in the fep by filling the vat with water over some paper towels.
>>
>>82312248
90% of the time it means support failure when that happens, though it can also be a screen problem or a lift speed issue. Fun part of those vat cleaning settings that a lot of printers have where it cures a thin sheet of resin to the FEP is that you can use that sheet to test for dead pixels on your screen; just look for holes in the sheet.

Siraya fast grey is bendy and very tough compared to other resins.
>>
I want to try printing with 50/50 siraya tenacious (the rubbery one) and regular resin, but I'm wondering how well acrylic paint stays on something that bends? Will the paint just flake off if you bend a piece, say, 90 degrees?
>>
>>82312433
Those are perfect table ready minis my dude. Nice.
>>
>>82312580
It might, but if you varnish the finished model there's much less of a chance it will flake when the part bends.
>>
>>82312433
niiiice.
>>
My prints keep fucking up and having missing bits and I think it's because I don't bother placing supports manually and just auto generate them with chitubox
I tried autogen with 100% density once and one of the models STILL didn't print, the other ones were fine after I excavated them from the plastic jungle
>>
>>82313029
lift speed?
>>
>>82313029
There isn't a slicer that exists yet where you can just place auto supports and expect it to work fine. The closest you can get to that currently is Lychee, but it is not all the way there yet. Its really good at supporting all islands when you tell it to, but the auto supports aren't smart enough to know if specific features on the model need to be supported more or less to prevent a failure.
>>
>>82313179
>lift speed
uhhh in English doc?

>>82313232
Yeah I guess I'll have to get off my ass and learn to add supports properly.
>>
>>82313352
lift speed is english. it's the speed at which your build plate lifts away from the FEP along the Z axis. i take it you haven't looked at your print settings at all yet?

Even though I'm using pre-supported models I still end up with a lot of flat legs and arms. I tried lowering the lift speed some but it didn't fix the problem. Same models had the same limbs wrong. This is probably the best place to ask. Sorry for animu shit, but why it failed to print part of the skirt? Sprayed a bit of primer to make it easily visible. I was super careful with cutting supports with hobby pliers, I did not break this part away. Double checked all cut supports for missing part — nah, yadda. No shit was glued to FEP or left in the vat. Made sure to properly fix all normals in blender after ripping the model from the game and solidified the skirt a fair bit, in slicer it was ~1mm thick, all perfect.
>>
>>82319265
purely supposition here, but is it possible that spot is not an enclosed volume? Some slicers disable printing non-enclosed polygons by default so they would skip it

is there a lightweight program that lets me cut off existing parts of an stl in case I only wanted a small bit?
>>
>>82319636
is it possible to get the part you want just by shoving everything else underneath the build plate in your slicer?
>>
>>82319710
don't think so, I'm specifically after left handed pistol grips and the bolter magazine would still be there
though I guess it might be an option if I don't mind having random magazines on the plate
>>

>>
>>82319743
in that case, Blender has the ability to import and modify stl files
>>
>>82300108
So when stuff comes as builders and parts, am i supposed to assemble them in something like blender? Or in the slicer? Or print them as parts?
I'm not very smart.
>>
>>82300320
imagine inhaling gasoline and diesel fumes from cars on the daily and acting like you're above resin
>>
>>82320015
depends on the creator really/how the models are positioned if you open the files in something that is not a slicer, like blender
>>
>>82319498
If it's a separate piece, there may be an air gap between her ass and the skirt causing the skirt wall too be too thin and tear during the lift process.
>>
>>82320306
Forgot one other thing other than tearing. There's a phenomenon called cupping. If there's air gap, it can form a cup that creates suction during the separation process with the FEP. The result can also cause a blowout/failure in the weak points.
Also, solution: Remesh it into a single piece or extend geometry to eliminate the gap.

Meshmixer can select and isolate independent meshes from stls even if they are intersecting each other and does plane cutting reasonably well but often fucks up when filling the holes resulting from cuts
>>
>>82321567
Use standard resin or a blend of abs like and standard. Shiraia dental has slightly better details but we are talking miniscule differences that don't justify the 3 times higher price unless you print actual dental or jewelry masters that sell for hundreds of dollars. For minis a well tuned printer and good settings make far more of a difference than the resin brand and type

I have interest in getting a 3d printer for black friday, preferably a 4k one with the main intended purpose of warhammer bits. I see that the Saturn and Mono X have sales going on, but then there's also the new Mars 3 and Mono 4k that go for less than the former without even having sales. Is the difference pretty much just that the former pair have a larger printing volume? If so, I'm thinking I'd be satisfied with one of the latter.

Or Perhaps am I better off starting with a 2k printer?
>>
Does anybody have the new 3d Breed march to hell Europe in Flames kickstarter?
>>
>>82327468
yes the saturn and mono x are more expensive because the machine is almost 4times as large as the smaller form factor printers

if you dont want to print Titan / Knight parts or larger tanks a smaller printer is more than enough. i can reccomend a 4k printer but a 2k one is more than enough if you just want bits. the quality difference isnt really visible to the naked eye from a few feet away.
>>
>>82327468

I have a Mono X and think the same as this anon >>82327880.

If you just want to print bits buy a Photon Mono and think about investing in wash and cure station.

Pic rel is a terminator with the same resolution as the 2k photon mono. As you can see there's no noticeable pixelation. It has imperfections because it was one of my first prints and im retarded.

So, looking to get into this hobby, I've seen some good reviews for Anycubic's photon mono x and their wash/cure machine. They're on a pretty good sale right now on their website until the end of the day.

My big question is everyone always talks about safety and the smell/fumes with these things. Most of the rooms in my house are generally occupied for most of the day or evening, and the best place I can think of would be in my room roughly 6-7 feet behind me by a window. Does the dome on these machines mostly keep the fumes down until you take the lid off, at which point you can wear a mask/gloves to deal with the resin problem? I do have a window close to the table it'd go on that I can keep cracked.

Thanks
>>
>>82335965
I'd keep it cracked, I keep my saturn in my garage with no windows open, and I don't notice much smell but other people may, and I've stopped wearing my respirator cause I have enough ventilation and I'm not huffing the fumes
>>
>>82333098
>>82333259
based, thanks a lot brother.
gonna have lots of stuff to print when my printer arrives
>>
>>82335965
the smell aint so bad but some people (like me) can have headaches with prolonged exposure.

Mine is a mars pro 2. I keep it in a small room and you cant smell it from the outside with the door open.
>>
>>82335821
>>82335846
So generally what happens is that lychee doesn't like supports from chitubox because they're essentially primitives intersecting rather than a solid piece. Like a cylinder with a tilted cone at the top. I'd suggest doing a slice and looking in preview.
>>
>>82336117
To add, the main issue I've seen with non manifold in lychee is holes in the mesh turning into thin columns for the full height of the model.
>>
>>82336147
Also if this helps anyone, this can be caught in the export tab by manually scrolling up and down through the layers
>>

Alright guys I'm thinking about pulling the trigger and getting a printer now since it's still Black Friday. Amazon has the Ender 3 Pro for 237, I haven't seen a better deal anywhere else, is there any reason not to get this as my starter printer?
>>
>>82338709
If you want to print minis, resin is better. If you don't care about that and would rather be able to print tough plastic parts and utility shit go for it; we can't really advise you unless you say what you wanna do with it
>>
>>82338709
the Ender can give good results with minis but it takes a lot of finagling with the slicer settings, and there will always be a good amount of cleanup involved. Excellent for printing vehicle models, terrain, and other larger figures
resin will always give better results and with less cleanup of the models, but there's the atrocious smell of the resin to deal with

Hollowing the pieces, a massive ass support to hold it, angling it so there is less surface on the fep at a time, and lastly, making holes in objects so that it doesn't create a suction. Just a few ideas besides the lift speed ad incresed exposure time which will be your best bet

For any anons that use grow tents and space heaters in winter for printing: have you tried using heat tape instead of the space heater to warm the enclosure? It seems like it'd be quite a bit safer as it's meant to produce localized heat and remain plugged in constantly. you sent me down a bit of rabbit hole. I was sure I've seen a XV22 stealthsuit, somewhere but it turns out GW apparently also used that name for the one that the female commadner character model wears. So you got two different types of suits with the same name. Anyway, the one GW is selling for shadowsun right now you can get as stl from Piper Makes.
I didn't find the one from DoW, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was floating around before and just got DMCA'd into obscurity.

Anyway, I extracted the game model. While not exactly ready to print as is it may be a good basis to work off. Exporting it as DirectX model merged all elements into one, so the two textures for the body and weapons would have to be assigned to different uv channels or you can just break the model up, but I figure using the textures as guide for surface detail might be useful.

Anyway, if you want the game files at least here you go

If you can't afford those you could try 3d printing mmd models of those characters.
>>
>>82335777
Use large supports with 3mm tips on the lower parts, lower lift speed to 20mm/m, increase the ambient temperature, up your exposure by a fraction and leave larger gaps between the individual parts on the print plate
>>
>>82335872
Where did you find the presupported parts or did you do them yourself?
>>
Yesterday
>Prints come out absolutely fine.
>Supports break off perfectly
>Detail is great
Today
>Prints fail everytime
>Half cured gloop at best
>One print literally didn't do anything but produce a clear layer at the bottom of the tray.

No settings changed, all cleaned and zeroed perfectly. I'm so mad.

Do ArtelW not sell any STLs? The stuff is nice but I don't want to buy finished minis

Way of GW, just take huge profits even though everyone knows the production costs are less than a $.

If I had to live off it I wouldn't sell files either

Any good deals this weekend on printers? Preferably something in the 4k mono range?

I think this will have to be it, there's nothing else that's changed but the date.

Do i need a decent computer to run 3d modeling stuff?

I only have a laptop atm but was looking at getting a printer, will it struggle to do stuff?
>>
>>82344656
Some programs need more power than others, you can download blender right now and see how if it hangs.
>>
>>82344656
I run em ok on a laptop that was top of the line 7 years ago, so anything mid range modern should be able to run them to a point. Zbrush can run 10million poly models on a toaster, so that's a great program for handling dense models, and blender does ok for smaller ones, although it's not quite as good at handling heavy files as zbrush, it's much better now than it used to be

Mars 2 pro vs photon mono 4k

Anyone know the key differences or any issues with either? Thinking of jumping on one of these

>about the tits. Those things defy all laws of physics.

I believe that was the point and totally intentional. Gravity-defying balloon tits have been common in fantasy art for a long time.
>>
>>82345818
not to mention in miniatures you need exaggerated proportions to "sell" the form factor. So dudes are jacked and women are dummy thicc/stacked.
>>
>>82345928
Muscular men are fine, sexualized women are bad.

>>
>>82342085
Looks interesting. What model is that?

You should hollow that model out and remember to include drain and breathing holes. Other than that, some of those long sections might need more supports to prevent shapes from getting wobbly from printing stresses related to build plate movements.

Holy crap thanks anon. Pretty solid quality to go off of.

>Honestly anon you could have answered all of those questions by typing them word for word in Google...
I could have, but I trust printfags over some bought out review of a printer. I figure if it is twice as better I might as well not budge and just wait for a good 4k option, it doesn't even need to be that big I'm not printing out anything larger than a tank or Imperial Knight and I am fine printing those out 1 at a time

Is an intersecting shell bad? I have intersecting geometry all the time in my prints and I've never had a problem.

Anyone tried to print basreliefs for terrain pieces? Displacing image on a plane in Blender and printing it basically. Want to make super-detailed church set piece for high scale diorama, but can't find anything good already modeled.

What do you guys use as a work surface for resin, atm im just using 2 foil trays but theyre shit and pretty dirty, so id like to get rid of them

is it just a silicon mat like for a kitchen?
>>
>>82354278
The silicone mats I got are for putting under dog bowls to contain the mess when they eat.
>>
Tried Water Washable resin. I'm never going back to the regular one. Same quality, but it's so much easier to work with. Isopropyl's been giving me these painful rashes on my elbows.

Is there an easy way to re-scale limbs on mini's? I have squat marine designs but wanted to make them nearer truescale size (smaller head, longer stomach/legs)
>>
>>82352665
If the shell normals were facing outward, it wouldn't be a problem. This one was facing inward and created an air pocket in the slicer.
It's also good modeling practice to remove the extra shells because it's wasted data.
>>
>>82354742
Some kind of lattice deformer should work. That will allow you to rescale/warp any parts contained within the lattice bounds.

Where did you buy your current printer from? Online like Amazon or Ebay or the brands website?
>>

Brand official ebay account.

Use disposable sheets of plastic or aluminum foil. Once it gets too dirty simply toss them and roll out a new sheet
