is water washable resin worth it to save on IPA? Just went thru a shit-ton cleaning up after failed prints dialing in settings for anycubic mono x.
>>
>>81719199
I've heard the eco friendly stuff yields pretty brittle models. Once you dial in for a particular resin brand, eco or more toxic original, you should be good to go for it. You just need to keep notes somewhere so you don't have to do it all over again.
How much are you spending on IPA anyway? I just rinse my prints in a jar, pull it out, and then water cure.
>>
>>81719327
usually about $20 for a quart. It certainly lasts for a while, ive just found i use a lot of it having to clean out the vat after each failed print, or having to clean it if im not able to print for a while

I usually spray down with a foaming glass cleaner that has an alcohol base in it. I forget the the name of it but it's pretty effective. I've bashed together bits from other files but never sculpted anything myself that wasn't something simple like a weapon magazine or barrel or something of that caliber. Not worth it unless you are a sissy and can't handle ipa or manly resin.
Water washable contaminates the environment even more due to its water solubility, the cured prints are less durable and the savings on ipa get eaten up by the increased price of the resin.

Sadly I have neither the skill nor time to learn real 3d scuplting. I have done plenty of kit bashing and minor modifications though but that hardly counts as making my own stuff.

DM Stash Shill here. Pretty weird. Try Lychee. All I can think is Chitu is somehow misreading the supports from Lychee, but shouldnt do that in an STL? However doesn't show up like that on my end at all in Lychee.

Pic related. LYS version on the left and STL on the right. Don't have those errors at all.

I like everything about it except the greedy corporation part. I like painting. I like the lore of both the imperium and chaos, its fun to play with friends and make a night of it. I do not like GW, their prices or their crushing of any type of competition. They took some great models from me through copyright, some of my favorite animators got fucked and their business practices are unsavory. So I am going to use their creation. But not pay them for it. Pirate everything. Buy different paint brands ( which is a major improvement) and overall just ignore the fuckers. If I want a model they make I buy it from Russian recasters.
>>

3d print noob here

Are there actual scans of 40k sprues out there? I really wanna print the sprues of the old chaos marine kit. Miss those lads
>>
>>81727695
>a better game

Not him, but i love painting 40k stuff and 40k inspired prints or even direct copies.
I haven't played a single game of 40k and probably never will.

I play mostly co-op boardgames, sometimes blood bowl and very rarely i play Chain of Command (a ww2 game).

So i paint quite a variety of stuff, but the most fun i have with is painting chaos space marines.
>>
>>81727742
No, but you can find inspired models and bits. and mix and match stuff yourself.
>>
>>81727777
Ok fair. I'll hunt down a 3ed sprue on ebay and recast it.

Thanks for the help 3d bros
>>
>>81727855

Good luck.

But is it even worth it?
I mean, what bits are worthwile?
The only thing really unique in this box i can think off is the pointing power fist and the banner/icon pole.
>>
>>81727893
I have an alpha legion army where I mix the mk4 kit with the 3ed chaos kit

The new chaos marines are too big and dont mix well. So I stick to classic stuff

Pluss im also doing a classic army with my uncle.

And I'm pretty good at recasting, done it a lot with various bits. Even made a diy preasure pot. Just wanted to check if there was a way of cheating so I didn't need to buy masters on reddit
>>

Newfag anon here, just tried to print my first minis after a good text print but with only 3/4 success. The muscle mimic and the Djinn from golden sun I added the supports automatically and then added some more myself and the robot warrior was a freebie from OnePageRules so it was already pre-supported. I should have taken a pic of the results with the supports but the robot warrior were so thin it didn't look like they even connected in some places. Unfortunately the Djinn just never got made with its base stuck on the FEP. I scrapped it off the FEP but now there is probably a scratch on it but I got extras so not too sad. Any suggestions to alter settings? I'm guessing I got to lower that bottom exposure time at least. It's a shame since the minis that did come out look pretty decent.

Has anyone every printed Clay Beast Creation's models?
Specially in 2k?
I absolutely love their Lizardmen models (Necron-eske themed), but I have no idea if my Photon Mono will print decently.
>>
>>81729811
Yes. I've printed up basically all of their FEC line except for the entire Prebatorr (I've only printed the torso and keep forgetting I need to finish it.) I think I've had a single print error on their pre-supported models and it was something I could've fixed with green stuff if I wanted to. There was also a design feature on the Vargheist equivalent where you could choose the wing position but left an unsightly blank spot that necessitated some green stuff.
I printed them on a Mars 2 Pro.

Thanks.
This one is from teccotoys.
I purchased and printed one of the mini mechs, and my friend painted it. He's the one with actual skills.
We stumbled into two troubles with this one: the leg joints were kinda wobbly, so we decided to glue them; And two: if you try to remove its arms (it has optional cannon arms), the joints break.

Don't bother, IPA fogs the film, just use a silicone spatula to clear out the debris, swipe out most of the resin and strain it in a coffee filter to reuse, and only fully clean it if you're not putting it to use for a while.
>>
>>81735926
Mechanical fitting is going to be a problem with MSLA due to curing shrinkage messing with tolerances. You'd probably have to go in there and redo some stuff by hand if you want working joints.

not bad at all, anon. nobody is born a master of a craft, my friend told me that much. i think he's really good, and he keeps telling me he's not good enough, that's why he keeps drawing and painting in his free time.
he also says that while some people is way, way more skilled than others, it's all about practicing like a motherfucker. but practicing does not mean shit if you paint a hundred figures and you learn nothing from doing so.

>>
>>81731602
Mate are we looking at the same picture? I can see support scars almost everywhere on top of badly cleaned areas, adding to that the way too thick white primer and it's no wonder you don't see layers in a blurry and overexposed shot of a model caked in white spray primer....
>>
>>81734373

Nah, you paint like the average painter.
>>
>>81736497
I dont tabletop though. I paint purely for display purposes only
>>
>>81736275
Your doing fine on a lot of areas. What drags down the quality of your painting is the lack of cleanup like the spilled blue and yellow on the belt buckle. And your choice of very saturated prime colors instead of using some more realistic shades and hues. I know it's often scary to try and mix your paints at first but the more you do the more confidence you will get.
>>
>>81736079
I found that for at least fitting peg into hole type fittings that I had to really dial in the correct exposure time to get a good fit.

New to the hobby. Are there any complete and playable armies that aren't just copies of 40k stuff? I mean something that uses the official codexes, doesn't look like a blatant copy but isn't out of place aesthetically and maybe even has its place within the lore. Feudal Guard seems to be okay for that purpose but they're not really my thing I guess.
>>
>>81737832
so you want things that arent copies of 40k , use the rules of 40k band have their place in 40k lore ...
then you mention the exact thing you asked for and say "its not my thing"
how about you lurk for some time and use google to search for stuff that "is your thing" first ?
also where the fuck did the rule about not spoonfeeding noobs go in the general?
>>
>>81737832
also im not trying to bash you or anything but give us a hint more info to guide you 40k is vast and im not gonna recommend you the 32th tau or death corps proxy army just to hear " its not my thing" again ....

Maybe I should just rephrase the request.
I'm looking for homebrew lore-friendly armies either using the official GW codexes, maybe old FW rules like idk. Traitor guard or with their own homebrew rules. Like those One Page Rules models, perhaps but without the chinese bootleg feel about them. I think there are 40k skaven using GSC codex, for example. Something like that.

>>81728697
Thanks man. I like to think the Goliath Barb is borderline this month. It's hard to make sexy things without being berated by a vocal minority in our discord. Pic related is our best selling model apart from our Lich, but the amount of shit we copped on Discord and Facebook/Instagram for it was unreal.

It pissed me off as I genuinely don't see this model as being sexualised, it's literally just a topless woman, which is exactly what a male barbarian would look like.
>>
>>81738142
Yeah the poll is borked.

Ignore the critics if they're only complaining about subject matter; nobody is forcing them to buy what you make. Constructive criticism on sculpting and details/aesthetic? Sure. But bitching about booba or man ass or whatever is dumb; just don't look. Blows my mind sometimes. That sculpt looks nice; I hope the Goliath wins the poll. I'd love to add it to my collection.

I really don't know where to ask this question, and I guess here is as good a place as any, seeing as it's kind of related.

I don't have a 3d printer, so I can't print shit.

I do however want to design some characters for a personal game, get them done up in 3d, and get some printed, or cast, or whatever.

At the moment, I don't know how much any of that would cost and google isn't giving me shit looking for examples or people who might be interested in what I'm wanting to do, and how much that would cost.

Once upon a time, I could maaaybe have done the 3d myself but no longer have the program, and my 3d art was always crap anyway.

At the moment, I don't know where to even start. Would anyone be able to provide any guidance or nudges on what to search on google to get relevant links to look at?

There should be a menu in your chosen slicer where all your settings are in one place; lift speed, exposure time/layer, all that. Should be right there. I use .025 on my Elegoo but I have seen some anons say that can cause issues with a non-mono printer and that .3 is more stable, so I plan to try it myself soon. Maybe go that route for now?

Magic
Now seriusly that's made in Gimp, after remove the background with the diffuse selection and the help of new layer and the curves, I duplicated that layer and then I mirrord the mini and I used the other side of the base to do that patch, after that I used the heal tool to fix the border, i did a blur to the border of the mini, download the Aztec paint, desaturate it a bit, add a layer to do a small vignette and that's all, took me about 25-30 minutes.

You really want a separate well ventilated room that you hardly use otherwise. But you can get away with having it next to an open window with a draft or extractor carrying the fumes outside. Obviously if you live in a cold climate this may not be desirable.
What you need to understand is the fumes are very noticeable, the low odour resins aren't low odour and breathing in the fumes constantly will do bad things to your health (typically you'll develop an allergy to the solvent in the resin with enough exposure).
If you can't dedicate a room to it (which you should also ventilate), you need a way to remove the fumes to outside and you'll have to clean up and put the whole thing away when you're not using it (you can't leave it out with resin sat in it); that means emptying your vat and cleaning it every time you put it away, which is a ballache.
>>
>>81744652
FDM will give you no issues but probably isn't what you want. Resin you're gonna have to work out a ventilation set up. I know you can 3d print connectors to replace the the existing vents on plenty of models and use those to connect to a hose and fan to vent directly out the windows. It's possible but its gonna an effort.

Hey anons. whats the general consensus on what test print I should use after recalibrating my shitbox anycubic photon? There was a flat print i saw a few times in these threads, but I don't remember what the actual file was. is it this thing?

I've been so frustrated trying to print dice. I was able to get prints off of it, but then the flat surfaces would have slight scratches and indentations. They're too deep to sand, though, and end up affecting the appearance of the numbers if I sand that face down enough where the mark disappears. Any help on this is appreciated.

have you followed the step by step guide to set the thing up? looks like a lovely printer with a good build area
>>
>>81745864
For one thing, the filament doesn’t melt completely on the bed, so it ends up with gaps between each line no matter how high I crank up the temperature (within limits), and things end up whispy if I try to print anything other than a model base. And that’s if the layers even adhere, instead of falling off the moment there’s enough weight that it needs to balance.

Which is bizarre, because the test print works fine. Bed is level - replaced the springs, because apparently the Aquila has shit springs. Tried glue. Tried washing with soap and water and then rinsing with IPA before and after every individual print attempt. Tried slowing the build down to 15mm/s.

Using Cura to slice, if that helps - It’s what the guy behind the 3d printed tabletop YouTube said to use, but idk how reliable he is.
>>
>>81745929
If it didn’t come with the box and isn’t posted by any official Voxelab accounts, probably not - Where can I find it? Will I need to disassemble the whole thing?

The test print worked perfectly though, so I’m not sure it’s a mechanical issue.

CHEP is a good source.
what filament are you using? i'm using PLA+ atm. 205C, 60C bed. go too high and you fail, too low and you fail.
Sounds like you have one of the following issues:
shit filament (the mattes / specials) can:
a) block the nozzle
b) expand in the bowden tube and get stuck
badly seated bowden tube can:
a) fuck up retraction
b) leave a gap which fills with filament and then turns the whole extrusion into a sludge
or you have the wrong settings in cura. do you have it set up with your printer specifically?
>>
>>81746014
I have it set up with my printer specifically, yes. Tried profiles I read online, tried default, tried tinkering with both, nada.

I usually print at 200 C nozzle and 70 C bed.

I replaced the nozzle entirely - Didn’t do anything. Ran cleaner filament, too.

Using the filament in the picture.

First real print that isn't calibration on the Chitu mono mod. The resin I'm using is really finicky about temperatures and I should update the slicer or switch to Lychee. I'm getting a lot of delamination at lower exposures where I need to be at but I may have mitigated it a little bit with with exposure delays on top of upping the temperature.

Looks like naval stuff. I might be converting some cad ships over to around the 1/700 range. Will post here if I do so, but I have some other projects lined up ahead of that.

>>81745826
FDM printers are okay and do well for printing stuff like terrain and some practical stuff but if you want to do miniatures or display stuff, MSLA is better for fine details.
What were you trying to print and what problems are you having?

>>
>>81746091
I was hoping to print Imperial Guard infantry models, but at this point I’d settle for bases to put my kitbashed Perry Miniatures stuff on lol.
>>
>>81746065
i feel your pain. i struggled with bad extrusion for a long time.
take out the bowden tube holder and the nozzle (while hot) and push a chunk of spare tube through the hole, make sure it can go all the way through (checking the throat is clear).
try moving the filament through your tube by hand, make sure it is really easy to move. if you have your head too close to the bed, then the back pressure can cause the teeth in the bowden tube holder to bite into the tube and make it protude internally

You are trying to drag a large square cross section off the fep with what amounts to sweet FA supports

Yep, basically. You can get sneaky with the pips for the 6 and 9 on dice that have them by making them your drain holes then re-drilling the pip once you fill. But for now just pick a spot you can fill and sand flush easily.

I failed you. This test print revealed so much horrifying shit I'm actually embarrassed about it. Here's what i've managed to learn.

>I really fucked up a year ago when a print got turbo stuck and you used the wrong tool to scrape it off the build plate. those scratch marks are horrendous
>Don't feed the birds before you start pouring resin, one of the seeds may end up in the vat and compromise your resin.
>The printer really struggles making slopes and holes

I threw out the rest of my resin (about 1/5th of Black 1kg Anycubic resin), and I'm looking online now for a build plate replacement. Any suggestions on what color/brand resin to get, and where should I even take it from here?
>>
>>81726711

>>
>>81734410
I hope that's a counter built into the barrel behind the turret.
>>
>>81746784
Scratches on your build plate are fine UNLESS:
>they are so bad they scratch your FEP
>they are so deep the resin can't fill them in with the first few passes
You actually want texture on your build plate. Now the rest of that looks pretty oof. Exposure time tweaks galore at the very least.
>>
>>81746724
I have an OSR3 battlemech printing right now. I kind of rushed the supports since I don't have a lot of daylight left. Other than that, I have a KD recast I'm taking my time on. I haven't painted in a couple of years and discovered most of my brushes were friggin eaten by moths.
>>
>>81746784
that's not too bad. It's overexposed, sure, but it's printing all the parts. What exposure time is that?
>>
>>81746784
concur with other two anons. Build plate not a problem. main issue is the over exposure (high).
exposure depends on resin, though.
you can filter resin too, instead of throwing out. I regularly decant back into bottle in order to keep warm. goes through a resin filter to pick up any floaties.
>>
>>81746417
One tip I picked up somewhere was to make the edge contact points continuous (make the supports overlap to the extent that no part of the edge is unsupported). They look like they're separate in your pic Worked for me trying to print sharp edged dice without deformation..

I recently replaced the FEP, so it shouldn't be an issue there.
As for settings, I just gabbed them off of an online build I saw for printing dice, I think the dude was called Rybonator. Based on how my prints have coming out I know this is definitely wrong, even for an anycubic which usually has longer exposure times. I tried lowering exposure time to 8 seconds for a few prints, but then none of the prints stuck to their supports. Here's what I got right now. Any suggestions?
>>
>>81747149
XP2 validation test with your resin. if it is dialed in right, everything else is in the slicing.
you have no heavy or medium supports, so imagine the surface area of the support connections vs the surface area of the cross-section / fep.
>>
>>81747188
Just did the XP2 test, results being here >>81746784 . Consensus is it's definitely over exposed. I feel like I also might have way too many bottom layers. Gonna lower both and try a new print.
>>
>>81747149
>Based on how my prints have coming out I know this is definitely wrong, even for an anycubic which usually has longer exposure times. I tried lowering exposure time to 8 seconds for a few prints, but then none of the prints stuck to their supports.

This is a Photon Classic (as in RGB LCD)?
What's your resin temperature?
>>
>>81747442
I think I have 6 bottom layers at 60 sec exposure. I use ABS-like and 8s per layer but i think i might try 6.5 or 7 here soon; feel like my prints are a bit overexposed though they come out pretty decent still.
>>
>>81746935
I recommend walmart brushes. Honestly they aren't that bad, and you can get like a 10 pack of detail hobby brushes for like 4 bucks. I like to keep my brushes cheap and disposable

Having tried the sable meme I can say that golden taklon brushes are the way to go. They last almost as long before fraying with less care and cost FAR less.

K, I'm going to assume it's a yes on the RGB. Room temperature seems okay. If it's not humid, you should be fine there as well. Did you check if there are settings for the resin you're using in the Photon resin database? It might get you closer to where you need to be before to fine tune
