Naroditsky already entering meme territory on move 3
I'm not that familiar with e4 lines, but this can't be a totally sound move, right? Danya is going into meme territory again
The board themes on Lichess suck. Suck! I'm using the "blue" theme (top left in list), best of a shitty selection imo. Some of the themes have uneven brightness across the board, or a weird blurry texture in the squares. What theme are you using? Are you using a custom with userstyles?

>>81714169Stockfish is very strict about endgame accuracy. Pretty common to have a smooth-ish line in opening and mid game, then seismograph endgame if it's not already completely winning for one side or dead draw. Particularly so in rook vs rook endgames where shit gets very tricky and correct moves not always obvious.

>>81713854he deserves it for playing the memeidor defense
>>81715702Very nice. I have never managed anything like that in a game. Only puzzles.
>>81714908I’ve always been a big sucker for sacrificial tactics where you throw away materially important pieces to open up killer blows for what you have left, classic stuff like >>81715702 or that one mate (Damiano’s?) where in some variations you sacrifice both rooks to clear the way for your queen to deliver mate, though that one’s less elegant and more butchery it’s still always fun.The single most satisfying tactical sequence I had was something I posted here before from a 3+0 game, I still think it’s really sick and a great combination of two of my favorite tactical ideas: Sacrificing the queen to remove a crucial guard, leading to R+N mate. Technically best is to not take the queen but it’s still mate shortly after, just less cool. My opponent took the queen though so I got to play the fun one.
>>81716267I would be so pissed if i lost to that. That is throwing things across the room tier.

hey :)I’m pretty new to chess and have a question, after an opening like say:e4 e5Bb5 (or a similar move later on)I see a lot of people saying that this is a good move and I understand that it pins the Black d pawn on the queen, but I always feel like after… c6Ba4, b5that I haven’t actually accomplished anything and have just fed Black free pawn development moves while I waste mine repositioning my bishopis this true? or am I just an idiot
>>81720059Yes you're wasting time moving your bishop. You either do it to bait C6 or wait until you're pinning the knight, pinning a pawn's fucking pointless when you can just be attacked by pawns.
>>81720059>e4 e5>Bb5 (or a similar move later on)Yeah that's just bad, don't do that. Usually if you're moving your bishop out like that to pin something it should be after they've developed a knight, and you are pinning that knight. The Ruy Lopez is a good example of that.
>>81720059e4 e5 Bb5 is the Portguese opening and it's crappy as white just lets black equalize right away without any trouble. Black shouldn't play b5 at the end of that though. d5 is much better. However, if you add a couple knights coming out first you have the Ruy Lopez. Pic related starting position. That is a very good and very theory heavy opening.
Bros I think I might experiment with playing the Philidor while listening to Philidor.
>>81720173You mean the BLACK LION of course
>>817200592. Bb5 is just bad2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 (the ruy lopez) is good though. it threatens to win the e pawn (not immediately, but after white defends e4) with Bxc6 Nxe5. The threat of this requires black to make some kind of concession, like a6 and b5 (not losing time since black also wastes some moves. this also leaves the bishop on an excellent diagonal), which can later be attacked with moves like a4, or d6, which is just kind of passive most of the time. white also is usually able to get c3 and d4 in, getting a large center that can be difficult to play against.

I used to spend a good deal of time actively trolling on there and I got pretty good at it - I was able to disguise myself as an earnest commentator just enough that people kept replying, while winding them up as much as I could. I'd laugh at some of them and feel contempt for others, and thought I was just having fun fucking with their stupid website. But over time I had my own cliched Nietzsche abyss moment, because the site was affecting me too. My own thoughts and emotions were exposed too - I was INTERACTING with these people, and interactions are bidirectional regardless of any ironic detachment. An exchange would stick with me imperceptibly for the rest of the day. A contemptible opinion I saw would color my mood. Realizing that I shouldn't permit r*ddit users to affect my mental state at all, I left the site.

Yay queen sac mate. The most bog standard of sac mates but still, I haven't got one of these in a game in a looooong time. In non-cool maths games people will make space for the king at even the faintest hint of back rank trouble.
didn't even realize rxf7 was a move.my opponent hung an entire piece early (Bd2 after Bb4 in the four knights scotch) in the game but I gave it back (for a pawn) because it looked like he had counter play with like qxg7 etc and now this is what I get.

After the naroditsky game yesterday I looked into the schliemann. Engine says its only 0.6 for white instead of 0.2 for nf6 or a6. That doesn't seem that bad of a deal if it gives practical chances. How come that grandmasters dont usually play it but are fine with stuff like kings indian defense?

>>81723009>s the King's Gambit THE meme opening of our time? It's one of the original meme openings. Used to be very popular at GM level before theory sorta threw a wet blanket on the fun. It remains good against anyone who isn't very familiar with how to play against it.
>played 3 rapid games and 11 boolet games today>last all of them except for 1(one) boolet gameWtf is wrong with me? A-am I dying?
>>81724517People don't really play KID at the highest levels anymore either. But both are fine for normal humans, at peak classical levels there is a meta game which doesn't apply to normal players. Not gonna pretend like I understand it, but for whatever reason the majority of high level players have found those openings to be sub optimal. That doesn't mean you can't play them, I think Naroditsky has shown you can play sub optimal openings at those levels if you prep specific sidelines, but if your opponent has done any preparation for them you will most likely find yourself in a bad position. Look at Naroditsky playing the Colle, it worked the first time because his Xiong most likely hadn't studied it in a long time and Naro heavily studied a particular sideline and knew how to precisely play it out. He tried it again a couple days later against Lenderman and Lenderman promptly shut it down. When Naro played the Schliemann he went down some obscure fianchetto sideline that hasn't been seen in professional play, so the chances of Dominguez knowing how to play perfectly against it were low. Dominguez had to burn a ton of his clock trying to think through the position while Naro was still in prep.

>>81720994Chess.com boards suck too. Suck! As explained here: http://ixian.com/chess/xboard-winboard-pixmaps/>the color schemes of most chess programs I've seen are difficult to use and are similarly unappealing. In particular, the piece and board color schemes are frequently dark enough that I have trouble seeing at a glance what Black piece is on them. I solved that problem here by having much lighter dark squares and having much lower contrast between my dark and light squares, making both White and Black pieces stand out reasonably well against them.

Lads what do you think about the Papa-Ticulat gambit against the french? It goes like this: 1. e4 e6 2. b3 d5 3 Bb2 ... Black of course has many options. The engine prefers Nc6 to leave the tension. Taking isnt a mistake either, and imo quite natural on lower levels. After that white can even go 3. Bb2 dxe4 4. d3 to truly sacrifice a pawn.Stockfish evaluates the resulting position as slightly better for black (-0.5) but I think it gives great chances for white especially if black takes the d pawn as well. Also you pulled the french player out of their preferred trench warfare type shenanigans and got yourself an open game. Just look at pic rel and tell me it aint pretty.I only ask because I recently got rekt by it as black and thought it was a fun idea. Seems like a nice surprise weapon for blitz/rapid.
>>81729130Dude shut the fuck up
>>81729130sure, i'll take the bait. Papa-Ticulat kind of reminds me of the Danish- sacrificing pawns for better development. Seems fun and interesting, might try this in some of my games today. Out of curiosity what rating are you playing this in for rapid/blitz?

Reached 1300 chesscom and I think around here it doesn’t feel like you’re playing beginners anymore. I’ve definitely reached an intermediate online level and I like it. I feel like here is where I’m going to plateau tho because I’m just too lazy to study chess. Doing puzzles is as far as I will go in my quest to improve my chess skills.
>>81731991>I feel like here is where I’m going to plateau tho because I’m just too lazy to study chess.Yeah you'd think so but as long as you play puzzles and analyze your games you should be able to motor on up at least a couple hundred more points before encountering resistance that requires SOME small amount of additional study. Game analysis is pretty much all I do to gauge how much theory I should be familiar with to prevent getting in to near lost positions in the opening. I go up to whatever I remember (six or seven moves max at this point), encounter a good move I don't know, usually find out it's theory, learn the response, and that's it. No need to be booked up 15 moves on every main line and sideline in your openings yet.
Playing anonymously because I just want to chill and eat chocolate right now
Can we go back to super de duper Good Master only tournaments where we all draw each other plz?
Was this one of you playing white? If so not too bad. Just need to sharpen up your tactics, both for offense and defense to prevent me from winning all your stuff. Opening and positional was okay. Ballpark guess maybe 1300 lichess/900 chesscom rapid? Somewhere around that area? >>81732521No I like open tournaments. They're more fun. Watching the top 8 play each other endlessly gets stale.
>>81732521lol didn't watch the games today so I decided to check. that's brutal
>>81713624lost to a 1600 rated player in a game for school. How would you play against the caro kann. In the game I played the fantasy variation and he played e6 leading to a good game that he won due to time pressure and being a couple pawns up.
>>81732740>how to play against caro kanndon't
>>81713624I love that little nigger biting his shield. I love him so much.
>>81732091Well, hopefully everything goes well for me, anon. Thanks for the insight.
>>81732740Analyze game and see if you made any opening mistakes first. Fantasy is a decent line against the Caro so I would stick with that if you're already somewhat familiar. Your other sharp choices are the Panov and accelerated Panov. If you prefer slower and a little less pointy, the advance and two knights are also fine.
>>81732729So... this is the power of Super GMs.....
>>81732740Panov or one of the advance variations, tal variation or van der wiel attack are both annoying. As a caro player these are what I hate to see the most.
>>81733317It's hard to avoid this in classical time control. Do regular 1 for win 0.5 for draw: get lots of draws. Incentivize wins somehow so draws are less desirable: still get a lot of draws because then the meta can become about depriving your opponent of a win.
1. e4 c5 2. b4!!
>>81733919My point is just add theory as needed when resistance encountered.
>>81731758Because Levy told them that in order to play c5 you need to know 9009 moves by heart and that's their way of bringing you out of your alleged theory. Also the d5 or b5 with tempo is completely harmless even at GM level so whatever.
>>81733966i don’t actually watch this guy but every time i hear someone mention his opening advice it sounds insanely stupid. doesn’t he tell beginners to not play the ruy lopez because “too much theory!!!!” too? that shit isn’t relevant at all until you’re well past shitter territory, such stupid reasoning to avoid some of the most critical openings
Problem: suppose that White resolves to castle as early as possible, no matter what. Likewise, Black has resolved to prevent this if possible, no matter what. Can Black legally thwart White's goal, or not? Assume "optimal" play from both parties, focused solely on the given task, and ignoring standard tactical considerations.
>>81734061I don’t have an actual answer because I’m about to go to sleep and I’m too lazy to think thoroughly, but my gut feeling is that it would be just about impossible to forcibly prevent white from castling, if white just starts with some king’s indian structure or even regular old e4 Nf3 Bwherever stuff it’s quite easy to quickly castle before black can do anything meaningful to stop it
do you guys own a chess set or you just only play online and never bought one
>>81734165I have a travel set with a floppy nylon board and plastic pieces. They're decent plastic pieces though, feel nice and weighty. I want a big boy chess set though for home, but need people to play it with to justify the $300+ purchase.
>>81734061>Black has resolved to prevent this if possible, no matter what. Can Black legally thwart White's goal, or not? Some openings for white are specifically geared towards fast development and castling. Black can (sometimes?) prevent this but the cost to do so could be very high, depending on the opening. For example, bringing a knight or bishop in to sacrifice itself for the f pawn will get the job done in many positions but that's a horrible waste of time and resources. Preventing castling is hardly worth it if you give up too much tempo, space, or material. Meaning yeah you achieved your goal but you are now losing the game. Pic related is something black could do to prevent white from castling in the bishop's opening. This is just a blundered bishop though.>>81734165Yes I have a plastic piece and roll up vinyl board set. I do play OTB occasionally and work on puzzles from books with it.
>>81734318You have one right idea with Giuoco Piano+Petrov but you're ignoring the spirit of the problem itself. For the purposes of the problem, we do not care about winning a game/advantage/etc. Can Black legally prevent White from castling as early as possible, yes or no. That's the problem, no more, no less.
>>81734542>For the purposes of the problem, we do not care about winning a game/advantage/etc.Why don't we care?
>>81734549Because we are interested in the problem for its own sake.
>>81734680Depends on the opening then. The only way it's forced is if a bishop or the queen is used to sacrifice itself on f2. In many openings one or the other will have a diagonal available to do that. Knight sac on same square is semi-forced as white loses a rook if he doesn't the knight. Also queen trade where white has to recapture the queen with king. Other scenarios involving a piece disallowing castling by way of the king not being allowed to move through check would not be forced and may only exist for one move.
>>81734061If white doesn't care about proper development or center control then black can't stop it.
>>81734061White needs a pawn move to free up the bishop, a knight move, and a bishop move. White castles on turn 4. Black has 3 turns to stop castling. The only chance is for black to try and sack on f2 with the queen, but this prevented by Nf3. I thought about black trying to just make knight moves only to sack on f2 but white can just castle through it
>>81735005knight only for black
>>81735032White bravely sacrificing a queen for the right to castle.
Puzzle streak is so deceivingly difficult. First couple of puzzles you have to mostly just play the first move that comes to mind, then you have to think about it, then you gotta calculate, and then it hits you with some insane king and pawn endgame. How is one supposed to go from lol checkmate to calculating 30 different king and pawn moves with 4 consecutive only moves?
This is the good shit right here. >>81735121That's the unique challenge of it. Getting a wrong move deep in to puzzle streak feels worse than blundering a game to me. Especially if I'm a good 30 minutes deep in to the thing.
>>81735005You have appreciated the basic thrust of my problem. My current thinking is that the Zukertort opening (1. Nf3, or even Nh3 since we don't care here) deprives Black of White's intentions about what he will do with his bishop, losing Black a tempo. The queen and knight-hoppy stuff seem to be irrelevant, it seems to come down to what Black's queen bishop might do.
Black to get advantage in 3 moves.
Poor kid made a one move blunder with his Queen and sacced his bishop for my c-pawn on move 3. I feel dirty.
Better than sex desu
just had pretty good coolmathgames match gg if youre here
>>81735633Yay! I came up with a plan and dumped it in to board editor to consult with stockfish to see if it was the right one. Success. Qh6 intending Qh2+ Qh1+ and grab the g pawn. Allow white to capture b pawn and even a pawn after Rb8. King is in major trouble with both f and e pawns pinned. I saw Rb2+ as a decent possibility because it can't really be captured without creating even worse problems for white's king. Surprised to see black then has forced mate after that rook is captured
>>81736113After Qh2 black is basically forced to protect the g pawn with Ne1, as there's too much pressure on the king. The most difficult thing about this puzzle for me was to find the eventual rook "sac" on e3, leading to an unstoppable attack. The official solution to the puzzle is Qh1 -> Qh2 -> Qg1
>>81736161Meant to say White is forced to protect the g pawn with Ne1
>>81733809Winger gambit. Works okay in boolet.
my god i love late night coolmath chess
silliest Automate game ever: one move and he resigns!
people used to pay for chess engines
>>81733966"too much theory" is a legit argument for openings where you're simply much worse off if you don't know the exact plans. I've had players at my level dish out like 10 moves of Grünfeld theory in 3 seconds and then lose pathetically because they got themselves in a complex position they couldn't manage.Same thing happened to me a lot when I wanted to play the King's Indian as a shitter (it has a cool name)
>>81737738ohnonono grunfeld bros...
>>81734054Yes he does, he roasted some sub 1000 shitter in a "guess the elo" or whatever for a strategic blunder on move 10 because "he doesn't understand the opening's goals and this is why shitters shouldn't play Ruy"
>>81739283Based Levy.I also remember when he mocked his <1000 fans who think that when they win one of their blunderfest games, it's because "muh caro is the bestest opening ever!!!1!!" and not because somebody randomly dropped some pieces.
>>81735005different anon here, I considered developing the queen to f6 and the bishop to d6. This would allow ...Bxh2 and either knight takes allowing the queen sac, rook takes losing castling rights or the bishop is ignored and castling is illegal. The problem is this is one tempo too slow and I can't think of a way of gaining that tempo
I'm bad at chess.
>>81739283>>81739326Eh that still seems kind of retarded. The Ruy is fine for beginners, you develop your pieces, fight for the center, follow good opening principles. It's one of the most played openings so there is a wealth of theory you could study, but that doesn't mean you have to study it. If you're low level the chances of your opponent knowing a bunch of theory against it is low as well. Maybe if the sub 1000 had like 20 lines of theory memorized then I could see why it's a problem. Most likely GothicJew was just trying to pander to his fanbase by roasting some helpless fan so he could farm some laughs in his chat
Why the fuck is this guy ALWAYS streaming on Alirezas channel? Why doesn't he just make his own channel at this point? Every time I see Alireza is live and get excited cause I want to see Alireza stream, open it up and it's this sad cunt.
>>81735005Cant the queen go to the h4?
my new chess set came in42x42cm, 50 bucks, woodenUsed some 3rd a delivery company to order it from online chess store as I could not find any local store. It works pretty well - a network of delivery places in other peoples' stores, dozens of places in every town over the country, works way better than snail mail. The package had the chess store branding on it. The female cashier gave me that completely uninterested "you nerd" look, I felt so weak at that very moment.
>>81737738Yep. Some are more forgiving than others in this regard. The modern wing attack style openings mostly fall in to unforgiving category. Ruy Lopez isn't too bad with limited theory knowledge.
>>81719377I miss yahoo chess.
I hate everyone who plays ruy lopez from the bottom of my heart.
>>81741557>hate Ruy players.but why?
>>81741098Just change whites move order, move the knight out first and h4 is covered.
>>81730849I used to like his channel a lot when I first started playing, but then you start to realize most of his content just steamrolling 1500 shitters with meme openings. Also seems like he's really trying to chase the gambit stuff lately, I guess he had a lot of success popularizing the stafford and he's trying to do it again, but there just aren't any decent gambits left.
>>817340611.Nf3This is the Reti Opening move order (though it may not turn into the -actual- Reti).1.Nf3 2.g3 3.Bg2 4.0-0

Never play Ruy Lopez
>>81743728Literally me when I play the Pirc.
>>81745251It seems to attract people on the extreme ends of the bell curve the most. So very shit players or very good ones with less popularity in the middle. The ones in the middle give it a go, see it results in kind of mediocre positions, choose something either more sharp or more solid. Shitters use it as an excuse to whip out the wayward queen. Very strong players like it for possible tactical opportunities not otherwise available in other openings.
