So this is how demons should look like?
>>
yes
>>
>>81563954
Well imagine that but not drawn in a medieval style. Keep in mind they can also shapeshift to look like beautiful people like the Greek Gods. As weebshit as it is a lot of the old Shin Megami Tensei demon artwork are some pretty good modernized renditions of demons... though not all of them.

I kinda always felt that demons would just be a mindfuck to look at, like a mishmash of whatever it takes to leave you in a total state of terror just by seeing them. Unless they choose another form but that depends on the demon.
>>
>>81563954
I feel like this sort of art comes from a place of wanting demons to not be scary because anything ungodly cannot possibly appear mighty or impressive. Some of the St George art looks the same to me.

Look at this tiny dragon. Would you give someone sainthood for killing something this unimpressive? George looks bored. His horse looks bored. The dragon design also has those fake-eye spots on its wings, as if it's not a predator but something that needs to use deception to stop it from being preyed on. Novel, but not something that makes St George look courageous.
>>
>>81563954
There have been many depictions of demons across the world and throughout history. The range from the oni of Japan to Humbaba of Mesopotamia.

>>
>>81567189
In that particular piece of art, it comes from what is referred to as the "heroic style". Basically, the more important someone is, the bigger they're drawn. Since St. George is the most important figure here, he's the largest, and since the dragon, ultimately, isn't very important, it's drawn small.

The dragon is very important in the dragon killing. The other guy is literally right: Dragons, as the representation of the evil of nature at that time were almost *always* depicted in a pathetic light, demonstrating the superiority of man over nature.

This is not the case with The Dragon, the biblical beast, but it's pretty well universal with incidental dragons.

My demons are like this, with an emphasis on the mouths everywhere angle and freaky chimerical bodies. Demons are spirits of the hollow core of the world and masters of manipulating flesh, hell looks like pic related. More eyes, more mouths, etc is a mark of status, with the weakest demons just looking like ugly hairy humanoids. Hell is also a physical space in the earth where damned souls are dragged to and incarnated into fleshy bodies for the amusement of their demonic owners, though really, there are more innocent souls than damned ones in hell now, because they got the sinners to reproduce for an endless supply of human souls to fuel their arcane power (but these souls are no fun since they're born traumatized and feral so they don't have the higher cognitive functions to make tormenting them interesting). They only continue to meddle in human affairs because they despise humanity like nothing else for reasons that are hard to articulate precisely in a way that makes sense to the human mind but could be conceived as humans being too "rigid" and "unplayful" for demons to relate to or enjoy the company of. Imagine the most annoying person to you in the world and imagine he is your roommate. Not evil or dangerous, just so fucking annoying. That's how demons feel about humans and why they want to torment them, they're the most annoying little pests ever, just by existing. There's no catharsis better to them than tormenting humans and it's become an addiction over the millennia.

That's a great idea. And could illustrate in a setting how the weaker demons are 'prey' to the omnipotent forces of Heaven, yet in closer commune to human society and human needs.

Although desu you can't beat the presentation of angels as unfathomable cosmic horrors that we get in the old Bible and ancient Judaism.

>>

Why those? If spider and octopus are so they can restrain men I get it, same for snake coils, but why fawns? The cuteness factor?

I did, but I can't see a demon with clam features being very intimidating, though, again, as I was typing it I was thinking that maybe they could be aligned with sloth, so that might be the point; luring one into a false sense of security.

Also, how would you divide the animal features among the Seven Deadly Sins?

in english we say "so this is how demons should look?" or "so this is what demons should look like?" this is a hard grammatical rule to fully explain, but it's basically because "how" in this case already means "what is it like," so using "how" and "like" together is redundant

old demons and old dragons are based, there's nothing inherently wrong with halloween devils and skyrim dragons but they've been done so much i'm completely fucking sick of them, they're a form with no impact anymore, same with "elves are pointy eared humans"

succubi are rapist demons, not seductive demons. they jump on you as you are paralized in your bed and habe their way with you., and the experience is horrible. also they are both male and female, since they take sperm from men and use it to impregnate women. incubi arent male succubi, they are unrelated nightmare demons

true, it doesnt make sense from a modern enough christian perspective, where the demon's role is to tempt and damn mortals, and they can't do anything to directly harm them
but still, they worked like this in old christian myths, probably derived from more ancient legends. they are monstrous creatures that torment humans, used to explain certain frightening things that people can experience as they lie half awake in sleep paralisis. if you want to give them a "point", the children they put in women are cambions
>>
>>81661460

>>
>>81654872
Make it monstrous, not "chick with red skin and goat horns". Stuff like lamprey mouth, perpetually molting feathers (that disappear over time), translucent skin, tentacles with many joints that look kinda like fingers instead of actual fingers, skin that changes over time to blend in with environment texturewise and colorwise (wearing clothes results in you looking like a mannequin). Just make something based on humanity, but throw on several monstrous traits (that aren't common, like goat horns with red skin).
>>
>>81661629
sure, demons started as evil creatures that cause bad things to happen, like in every other myth, before theological autism rationalized them into their limited roles. i was answering to that anon who told me that rapist demons have no point because being raped isnt a sin, as if the only thing that demons can do in his opinion is tempt people into sin

Here:

https://www.nationalgeographic.com/history/history-magazine/article/history-devil-medieval-art-middle-ages

"Early Christian authors such as St. Augustine regarded the devil as a fallen angel; he was bad for having rebelled against God, but retained his angelic substance, and was not a physical being. When taking a physical form, the devil might choose as undiabolical an aspect as possible—a beautiful woman, for example, or a holy figure—the better to deceive his victim. Many medieval artists, however, in order to drive home their message, presented the devil in as terrifying a form as possible. "

>>
>>81654872
According to christian theology it is not possible since demons are of an spiritual substance incapable of sexual reproduction, so it worked by a succubus getting the semen from a man and an incubus seeding a woman with it, supposedly, they were often ill, deformed and bad behaved.

And why is that this sounds so familiar...

human flesh(especially from innocents) and depraved acts are the usual "coin" demons and devils bargain in when they aren't directly asking for souls*, getting possessed by a demon is another common price

*indeed unless it's an absolutely monumental task I could imagine many of Hell's residents finding it a bit crass to directly ask for someone's soul, after all the kind of people who go making deals with them are probably Hellbound anyways

I used that as backstory for a character in Call of Cthulhu, playing out the entire sequence basically word for word with the characters related with the girl's friends who went missing after it ended.

Whole table was riveted as the thread had been set up long in advance, and it ended up working really well. I'm lucky I have players that are down when I go on bizarre detours and my players are usually down.
It started with every character getting dreams in our CoC game, brief, a few minutes, with potential foreshadowing or reflections of past events in them.

I think demons are my favorite fantasy category and I love them no matter if they're just generic gnashing monsters with fire n brimstone or weird/cool things like avatars of sin or grotesque beings with fae-like morality.

My favorite example from someone's custom lore is that at the beginning of time, there was God, and demons were what occupied every single space that he did not. When he made creation, the displacement split demons asunder, and all demons in the present setting were once a fragment of that one gigantic mass. They are the only things in creation not bound by God's will, and while they are in no way a threat to him whatsoever, they are incredibly curious about humanity and fuck with them - for better or worse - out of pure curiosity and boredom, because their lives otherwise have no meaning whatsoever.
