poxes couldn't not be 5points, but their base toughness and ignoring D2 being what it is makes them better than cultists by a country mile

deathshrouds are 50 points per, the reason they are good is because they absolutely murk chaffe spam armies and can shoot into melee. They are worthless at range and have 5". Armies like Admech or Eldar variants or even psyker armies can blast them at range and kite them, and they cant do much about it

If you have to play with people that intentionally limit themselves to prevent breaking the game, the ruleset isn't balanced by definition. Not even sure what your dumb argument is at this point, its like claiming PL is fine as long as you play with people that don't exploit its glaring and obviously broken nature.

An anon dropped a mega download link and I was able to watch the Angels of Death (first 3 episodes) and some of Sugghammy's videos.
I'll drop the post that has the mega in it soon after I finish up my reviews.

Crack a soda or light a cig.
I'm not gonna do a TLDR.

First off with Angels of Death.
DO NOT WATCH IT IF YOU HAVE EPILEPSY

I'll start with Angels of Death's graphics.

If my memory serves correctly Angels of Death is primarily being directed by the lad behind the Helsreach animation Richard Boylan.
I think he had some kind of deal to keep his video up.
Said Helsreach animation is animated in Source Filmmaker and most of the 3D models are from Joazzz (SM, Orks, Titans, scenery most like) and Superninjanub (Imperial guard, Sororitas, Steel Legion) if anybody cares to drop a mega link with those GMOD/SFM models I'd appreciate it.
>why are you talking about Helsreach, anon?
Because the Angels of Death 3D assets are all modeled and textured to appear like a well made animation made in the Source Filmmaker or at the very least to look like they were rendered in the Source 2 Filmmaker (I heard that program has its own bugs/poison compared to OG SFM).
Though if you told me that some of the assets (some of them are video game assets heavily modified) were made by Joazzz/Superninjanub and ported to say Blender or Maya I would have no reason to really dispute your claim besides possible copyright issues. I'm sure GW would have covered that though.

>the good about the visuals
I totally understand if you don't like the SFM rendering style with a Sin City colour palette but you're gonna have to deal with it.
I believe that Richard Boylan decided on this style because the HD video game asset looking renders are a compromise between being hardware friendly for reducing rendering times, and creating an "equilibrium" between a "cartoonish" and "realistic/gritty" visual style.
Said style genuinely does allow for one to turn off his brain and just enjoy the visuals.

>>

>>81311062
Now before I go into the bad part of the visuals I just need to say that the story is basically follows a simple formula of a Blood Angels detachment being stranded on a good for nothing world and the space marines are even more stranded.

The ship's crew has to (you saw this coming) fend off incoming Genestealer cultists, and keep the ship safe from harm from the other ships that presumably are part of its Armada.
The main ship we worry about is stuck to a giant refueling pipe and is basically immobile.
The genestealers have infiltrated it.
The Space marines are unfortunately on the surface and they basically have to fight their way through the urban city streets to make it back to the refueling tower and get back to the ship to save the day.

I think Richard Boyland is playing it pretty safe by keeping the plot a simple thing to follow. Doesn't seem like there will be anything grandscale in how this will affect the 40k universe.
Just a pit stop for refueling/repairs on the wrong planet at the wrong time gone horribly wrong.
And good on Richard Boyland. I'm no good writer myself and I don't think I could screw this up either.

>Now before I go into the bad part of the visuals
I got sidetracked with the story apologies fellas.

Remember when I mentioned that epilepsy warning?
THE COMBAT IS FULL OF FLASHING LIGHTS, AND HOLLYWOOD CAMERA SHAKES.
Seriously anybody watched Sodaz's SFM animations?
The combat was always near perfectly framed and the camera was not shaky.
This means that the viewer can easily see what the fuck is going on.
Even with bolter shots and their muzzleflashes and lasguns/autoguns firing off the flashes are not like JJ-Abrams lense flares going off every couple of seconds.

Now I am quite sure that the reason for the shaky cam is to convey that the animation is chaotic and fast paced, but that isn't necessary.
The action does not seem fast paced and chaotic.
The camera is.
I think this was meant to cover up how there isn't much animation going on.
Unfortunately the South Korean Source Filmmaker animator Sodaz somehow manages to brutally look better than Angels of Death because from what I remember his animations had the camera steady when it mostly needed to and knew when to have the camera move quickly through the action scenes.
Angels of Death does not have that.
To make shit worse there are lens flares and the bolters make huge muzzle flashes that cover up the fucking screen AND SOMEBODY THOUGHT IT WAS A GOOD IDEA TO HAVE MOTION BLUR APPEAR IN THIS ANIMATION.

The action scenes are a bit janky and blurred out.
I reiterate again. The camera is not the best in the first action scenes when the Space Marines are on the ground.

Most of the sectors are also dimly lit I think this is to have the viewer focus on the subject and the action and draw them away from the background.
But this is a huge missed opportunity because the sci-fi gothic look that Warhammer fans seem to like visually also applies to 40k's architecture whenever it is shown to be its sci-fi gothic look as intended.

I'm still glad Boylan is keeping it grimdark.

I have no idea who uzaki chan is, nor do I care. But I stopped looking for manga and anime when all became infested with moe pedo shit. Even seinen like Berserk, Gunnm, or Shirow's and Gainax' works became unbearable after they sold out. Nothing wrong with titillation here or there, but the otaku pedo crap that became the norm is an abomination, and dudes like Miyazaki or Anno know it (even if the later took profit from that). Just child-like sexualized women and teenager crap to the infinite. The pretensions of intelligent content and 3000yo dragons are irrelevant.
Source: dude that began watching anime in the very early 90s.
>>

>>81311329
So all in all the plot is so far forgettable at best because the animation quality is supposed to have you turn off your brain and just look at everything.
By the end of the third episode it visually looks as though Boyland wants to build something up to a fight with the Blood Angels to the heart of the GeneStealer cult's hive.

I know that right now the Angels of Death series is not quite unfurling its wings yet.
Were still in the introductory phases of the series.
I hope that Boyland's animation team gets their shit together with the shaky cam
FUCK THE SHAKY CAM OF ANGELS OF DEATH
FUCK THE LENS FLARES
FUCK THE BLINDING MUZZLE FLASHES

Right now what little plot is in the story is forgettable at most because so far whatever it is leading up to is not yet known.

5/10 I'd recommend watching it as you're waiting for your painted layers to try between painting.

Now to cover Sughammer's videos...

The term lesbian got colonized hard by trannies so maybe sapphic is a way to gatekeep feminine penises out of their rugmunching clubs.
>>
>>81311526
>Sapphic, also known as woman loving woman (WLW), girls loving girls (GLG), LBPQ (Lesbian, Bisexual, Pansexual, omnisexual, Queer), difemina, or sapphist, refers to a woman, woman-aligned and/or non-binary folken, who is attracted to women, exclusively or not. They may or may not be attracted to other genders as well. This attraction does not need to be exclusive, as the label is used as a way to unify all women or women-aligned folken who love other women such as Lesbians, Bisexual women, Pansexual women, Omnisexual women, queer women, and other m-spec women, promoting solidarity among women of all identities who are attracted to other women.

Alright so now we move onto Sughammer's master class tutorials.

Suggy is a talented miniature painter and nobody can take that from her.
The problem is that Duncan Rhodes' videos still outclass Suggy's videos in terms of brevity and displaying the steps to achieving what the video sets out to show. Barely anything in Duncan's video feels like its there to extend the length of the video.
>So when models like Archaeon the Everchosen are painted and the video is an hour, it becomes an anomaly and the audience knows to sit down and pay real close attention.
>Somebody mentioned that Suggy is Scottish not sure if that is true.
Don't worry you'll be able to understand what she is saying.

I'm not sure if it is because the GW studio wants to keep making cuts where the camera is on Suggie.
It almost seems like GW is trying to pad for time by showing less of Suggie painting and having it more like Suggie explaining. Why can't she just record her voice and that audio gets used over the miniature painting?

I know that the camera sometimes focuses on Rhodes in his old painting videos but it was not that much.
The cameras in Duncan's videos were like 70 percent on the miniature painting and like 30 percent on Duncan. I'm being generous here.
In Suggie's videos the camera feels to be like 60 percent on her and 40 percent on the painting.

Part of why the Duncan Rhodes videos were so amazing is because they were always getting to the point and compressing as much information as possible into as reasonably of small time slots as possible to make the video steps easy to track and easy to follow.
All of this is absent from Citadel's Masterclass videos. It feels like the studio is making a deliberate downgrade from Duncan's videos.

Now the outcomes of Suggy's videos however are wonderful. That much I can say. They somewhat justify the lengthy time but I feel that there is just so much that can be cut out.

Considered the start of the gay rights movement in America and its why pride month is when it is. Basically the cops did a routine raid of a gay bar (where there was a bunch of illegal shit happening like no legal liquor licence, saftey hazard, bribing officers, literally run by the mafia, rampant drug sales, ect) and all the gays freaked the fuck out and rioted for days. Now there admittedly were some instances (I have ADHD and doctors say that means I'm on the autism spectrum) but I think Suggie briefly shows "flickers" of nervousness.
I'm sure this is probably Suggie's first job where a camera is in front of her and she is being broadcast to a worldwide audience.
I'm sure that such things will eventually go away as she gets used to it in the future.

The end results of her video displays do come out in excellent quality.
The wet blending video seems like something that GW just wanted to put out there. Suggie does get the job done there.
And ummm.
>She uses a wet palette that looks DIY instead of the video teasing a GW wet palette
>on her pale skin tutorial she doesn't use the Citadel painting handle
Its obvious that she most likely has a bit of freedom to just do her thing and do it the way she wants to.
If the video tutorials are really that long as required by the studio for most likely watching while paint dries then GW is shooting themselves in the foot.
That's for an episode to be watched or making lunch after a thin coat is applied to a miniature and one must wait for it to dry.
The videos are still worth your time. I just feel that the studio is a letdown in how technically there are loads of youtube tutorials that basically explain the same stuff.

>allegedly Suggie uses /tg/
This is not a personal attack on you, Suggie.
You should take lessons from Duncan's videos in how they are conducted in a way where they are brief and informative.
The videos just feel like there is too much talking and not much walking even with audio over the painting. I just found it weird that I was feeling this way watching the videos.
The order in which the words come out reminds me of myself trying desperately to cram as many words as I can to reach a word count.
Even when your explanation is over footage of the miniatures being painted.
The graphics that appear while you're painting with your audio going over it are a good way, but do try to find ways in which to compress the videos into shorter lengths.
Try to make the introductions a bit more brief.
I'm an ADHD tard so the shorter and informative the videos are the better. Duncan Rhodes exceeds at making videos stupidly easy to follow and seems to have a plan to keep any unnecessary explanations/info out to keep the videos as brief as possible
This is because Duncan's videos have a more "utilitarian" aspect to them in keeping nearly every second something important to entice a viewer to stay at attention to what is going on.
Try to make every second something that a viewer cannot afford to miss.
Like every second needs to be like a page out of a Lego instruction book. Skipping one page could lead to ruin down the line like skipping 3 seconds at most could end in disaster.
Try to watch some of Duncan's videos and take notes from him.
>will you have episodes dedicated to answering painting questions like WH tip of the day?

>Okay I'm done.
Actually no.

Besides my relentless nitpicking of Suggie's videos I primarily said a lot of negative things about them because I want them to be successful.
Suggie did her best, and I hope she improves some more she definitely has the talent and oratory skills to fit in Duncan's shoes.

Besides my ADHD I will freely admit might invalidate some of my analysis.
The whole time when I was watching Suggie's tutorials (which I downloaded from the mega for free >>81301626 )
I just felt that there wasn't really much.
I could easily google whatever Suggie was teaching me and get a free result that achieves similar results and satisfies what I am looking for.

The only thing that I can think off of the top of my head is probably me digging up what I was saying about comparing Suggie to Duncan Rhodes.

She needs to find a way to make these tutorials get to the point faster, make every second an informative note-taking worthy one with as little explanation as possible with the audio over the footage.
The studio and Suggie need to work together to get the videos to be as brief as possible.
>because one major gripe I have with video tutorials is that they are mostly longer than 15-20 minutes.
I want answers.
I want explanations.
I want steps.
I am stuck with looking at videos because good PDF instructions are what I find difficulty finding.
Suggie and the Warhammer studio need to start googling youtube video tutorials and try to make Suggie's tutorials briefer, more informative, and they must leave the viewer with knowledge that they will take from the video.

Right now there is nothing that the masterclass video tutorials offer that Youtubers show.

Suggie you and your studio need to find a way to set you apart from the rest besides being a series of tutorials behind a paywall.
Find the faults in the average painting youtuber tutorial videos and don't repeat them.

There's not much I can really think of anything to improve.

Good luck, Suggie!

I think his point is that when they have to use black and white to do the illustration they have to do more elaborate shapes and details/shading rather than let the evocative colours imply more detail than is drawn/painted.

>>
>>81312212
He's not wrong, but he doesn't understand why he's not wrong. With B&W all you have to worry about is lighting and shading, so it's much easier to create dramatic pieces with hard shades or create the implications of massive forces that the human brain will fill in if you silhouette it right. Once you include color you have to ensure that your colors are all balancing and it's a lot harder to direct am audience's attention to the focal point if you have loud colors clashing with each other. The end result is that a greyscale version of a colored piece can be more pleasing to the eye because it's just plain less noisy.

Take your own pic for example. Without all the bright neon glow on the Necron structures, my eye is naturally drawn to the clash in the foreground and then the rest of the picture "unfolds" from there, making the foreground feel more visceral and allowing the background to lend that intimate clash a sense of scale. The colored one, however, has my eyes darting all over the place. First to the green exhaust from the pyramids then the random streamers from the dogfight in the skies then that fire in the back left and FINALLY on the fight up front. As such, the piece now feels disjointed, scattered, and incoherent. It's not really a thing people can put into words if they don't recognize how brains like to read pictures, so most people just default to calling this gut feeling of a well composed image "soul" and the vague sense of frustration you feel at a poorly composed image "soulless".

>join the deathwatch or are they part of the deathwatch permanently
Deathwatch service is generally not permanent but obviously can be. Any ranked position like Watch Captain, Watch Master, or of couse, Black Shields? Those guys aren't leaving the DW any time soon.
Other marines?
Yeah, do your time then return to your chapter and share what you learned. Various DW anthologies have confirmed both of these.

And I guess to be thorough:
The most common way of leaving the Deathwatch is of course by dying on the job.
>>
>>81312479
They can ask for chapters to do things but generally it's not often "I command you to do this". An Inquisitor asking for marines to redeploy on a large scale/distance strategic level has to make the case to the chapter master/captain. But if the inquisition come up to you and say "you're in the area, I need you to do this", the marines are more or less obliged to be the rapid response force on an elite mission.

I don't think space marine retinues as a regular thing is the norm. If he needed a squad he could ask for it, but on a case by case basis.
Of course, if it's part of your homebrew guys' lore that they owe the inquisition or like to parcel out their soldiers to the inquisition, it's totally plausible and congruent with the lore.

Most of them are religious or spiritual, fhey just don't follow the same religion as the rest of the Imperium set down by the Adeptus Ministorum. Chaplains are leaders of the Chapter Cult and most Chapters have one. None of these things will happen.

I fully expect Infantry squads to become units of 20, like with skitarii, and then Conscripts will be removed (strictly speaking, there's no model for them).
I also expect Sentinels to get insanely pushed, because no one owns 9 of them. No one. And if you could convince every guardfag to suddenly buy 9 sentinels, that'd be $300 per guardfag.

Tzeentch fits my Alpha Legion boys perfectly, they're twisty and turny and constantly adapting to changing circumstances, to the point they've never lost a maelstrom game and my friends insist on actual missions now
which makes it even funnier they're 99% mark of Slaanesh

in general though I think it varies from warband to warband, the legions that didn't commit to a god are more or less an even mix of each god's ethos - I can make a case for Khorne, Slaanesh, Tzeentch or Nurgle Iron Warriors and I don't really think any of them's a stronger argument than the others

Night Lords are pretty heavily Khorne slanted tho

There's 9 OG traitor legions. Four of them are heretics devoted to a god, one of them is a Heretic devoted to all gods. That's 5. Three legions are traitors not devoted to a god, but who kind of align with a god each. Khorne for NL, Tzeentch for AL, Nurgle for IW. Though IW are also big on bloodshed and has khornate Berzerkers, and can display Slaaneshi obsession and shoot twice. But the Black Legions is kind of like the Word Bearer of Traitors, not actually devoting themselves to the gods. They are chaos undivided against the imperium, not for the gods. This leaves you with no Traitor Slaanesh Legion. Wew

It's not that hard to grasp it. You do agree that Word Bearers fights for the glory of all chaos gods, right? Now, the AL makes plans and lies, which are aspects of Tzeentch, but isn't actually dedicated to the glory of Tzeentch like the TS are. So, the TS are Tzeentch HERETICS, and the AL are Tzeentch TRAITORS. Following this, the Black legion, using aspects of all of chaos undivided, are Undivided Traitors, not unlike how the Word Bearers are Undivided Heretics.

That's what you are reading.

I can't speak for anyone else but for me and several of my irl friends it's a 1-word condensation of "this is aesthetically pleasing to me in a way no miniature made since 2005 is, and I lack the vocabulary to explain why because I'm not one of those fucking dweebs who delves into art theory"
>Seriously I haven't seen Lego fans who grew up with Bionicle screeching "Sovl" when they see the OG Bionicle sets.
a) how much of a gap is there aesthetically between old and new lego
b) a group not using a term they haven't been introduced to isn't an argument. old ladies don't use the term "meta" because they have no need for it, that doesn't make it an invalid word in other contexts

>Or is this just zoomers born in 1999 (like myself) pretending to be grogs to be niche/try to feel unique in an already niche hobby?

Since fucking when? Trukks/buggies were always AV10 all round and open fucking topped. You used a forcefield or your vehicles vanished. They've done a total 180 on that.

They're probably a liiil bit overcosted but they do have as a bonus that they can push onto the board unlike PBCs because they're still handy in melee, they have weapons for most situations and most importantly the mini is cute.
I don't think they necessarily fill the same role as PBCs, though the PBC is easily the best tank in the game so it's hard to compete with that. I'd say they're somewhat equal in resilience though, belching fumes and -1 to be hit in melee do some serious work.

Terminators tripled in wounds, and rerolls are now extremely common. Instant Death became extra D. 40k was a chance game, it became a "dice-based strategy game". Random chance was barely there.

So are you admitting it's less thematic or not?

there's something more to it than just nostalgia, EYE divine cybermancy has immense soul despite being relatively recent
maybe it's that there's an undercurrent of fun and care even if (or magnified by) any objective shortcomings

how do I run my daemon hunter and witch hunter armies from 4th edition in the current edition? Looks like they were splintered into like 5 different books. Can inquisitors still lead grey knights armies? What happened to stormtroopers?

The fact that you would call EYE soulful just reinforces my believe that the word means "shitty but I like it"

I mean holy hell that game is a mess
>>
>>81313559
Yes & No = "Kind of". Turns out the answer isn't a boolean yes/no.
I'm saying Orks were steered away from lul random because the game itself was steered away from it. So it makes sense Orks were given "something to that effect". It's just that the rule cannot be flavorful of Orks because random chance is now frowned upon.

Just look at lascannons. Damage 1d6. Noooooobody wants to use lascannons, they all want the more dependable D3+1d3 guns. Lascannons would be orky now lol.

this isn't a videogame board, so I won't delve into a rant about the absolute joy and old source engine feel the game exudes and how it's much less retarded once you get into it, but long story short mess != shitty
but yes it is a hot fucking mess

I think that models tend to be ascribed "soul" when people see them as being personal in some way, either to the original sculptor or the hobbyist. The aesthetic consistency between several models produced by a well-known sculptor, or the personalisation of a multi-part plastic kit, can make those models feel like they represent their creator in a tiny way that monopose doesn't.

There's a heavy current of old=good in there, but it's not a useless term. Examples that buck the trend include the well-liked modern GSC multipart infantry, versus the more excessive Marine sculpts of 5th and 6th. It's an ambiguous blend of nostalgia-goggles and genuine criticism of GW's changing design philosophy.
>>
>>81309745
DG don't need nerfs whatsoever, I mean 3 factions win literally every event and you wanna nerf DG?
>>
>>81313911
yeah, sans not having limos new GSC is high octane soul, I'd even wager that the primaris have a hint of soul with the radical bike chaplain but that'd be very contentious

CCON (CoolCastOrNot) is retiring sometime this year, is his current working email the vip.163 one? I'll damned before I let that sekrit klub boomer retire just when I thought I was about to finally get an order in.
>>
>>81313945
Yeh it's ambiguous. I lumped multiparts in with single sculpts there but the latter is the much more contentious, since it's about what the sculptor put into the model vs what you the hobbyist can put into the model.

I honestly think part of the effect is illusory, coming from how GW stopped naming who sculpted each individual model. There's plenty of classic "soul" models that are named by who made them i.e. Diaz Daemonettes or the Perry LotR ranges. I think people connect less with sculpts that they feel were produced by GW rather than a person, even if some (like the bike chaplain) are very characterful.

- Something that seems to be created out of personal passion and fun more than financial incentive
- Something that was created by a single individual (magnum opus) or small group of people as opposed to a massive collaboration
- Something that took creative risks and was either avant-garde or remained highly esoteric, especially in themes and art direction (the failures are not remembered)
- Something that looks worn, rough-hewn, or vintage as opposed to factory fresh and flawless
- Something that caters to a niche audience rather than broad appeal
- Something with a very good soundtrack combined with a strong understanding and application of music theory

Also Bionicle is extremely soulful.
