If I remember correctly that was based of a Dragonlance campaign that some Japanese nerds played, so it should be pretty /tg/ approved.

Also, I got a special place in my heart for Bastard! and Outlaw Star.

When I was a child, this movie scared the crap out of me. I saw it again in my thirties, and it was a religious experience.

Saying "Lord of the Rings" in this thread is like picking your religion's holy book when someone asks you what book you would want trapped on a desert island.

Oddly enough, as a huge fantasy fan, I did not enjoy the Peter Jackson films nor did I enjoy the books they were based on. They were both far too long and incredibly dull for much of their run time. Visuals, soundtrack, scale, and such they were pretty God tier though. Given the choice as to which is the better story, I enjoyed the Hobbit as a read MUCH more.

Oddly enough, Ralph Bakshi's LOTR movie was waaaaay better in terms of pacing to me by a retarded margin.

Back on topic, I showed a hard-core fantasy nerd Gen X'er Dragonslayer last year and they were incredibly pissed they didn't know it existed before I showed it to them because "Little me would have watched that shit on loop for days on end."

>>
>>81306244
Lord of the Rings is overrated anyway. I mean, it's respectable and definitely energized the fantasy genre in movies and TV, but it's not nearly as great as everybody seems to think it is, and think it benefits from a relative lack of competition. I'll take the original Conan movie over it any day of the week though.

Side note, give the movies, adjustment bureau, upgrade, cloud Atlas a try. They're good movie. That last one should be able to give the best example on pulp fiction SCI fantasy.

Thundarr makes me angry at the world. That show is so fucking good, it's got early eighties Hanna barbara Jank but the stories are cool, the designs are excellent, and it oozes style.

Any yet somehow, no one has ever gone back to the well. Yet He-man keeps getting attention, when the original he-man cartoon is fucking awful. It's terrible. I legit don't understand why people give a single fuck about he-man.

The He-Man toys, amigo. The story behind how those toys and cartoon came together was some of the biggest collection of ass-pulls I have seen.

>Dude obsessed with muscle men made a toy with incredibly exaggerated muscles
>A crew of folks spitball it a bit to make more for the company
>Oh, shit! The main hero needs an animal companion and we forgot to give him one!
>Big cats are bad ass, lets give him a big cat. We got an old toy line that had one. Just use that!
Boss, that toy line was from a different scale. That lion is retardedly big.
>Paint it weird colors and slap a saddle on it. Kids are dumb, they won’t notice.
Boss, the executives are here about the new toys. They like them, but don’t know how to market them.
>Tell them the cartoon will sell them.
What cartoon?
>The one I am about to pull out of my ass for next weeks meeting.

Forgotten film about an amublance driver in the early 90's. Good WoD vibe.
>>
>>81309342

BSG was like the Game of Thrones of the aughts. The last season and finale annoyed everyone so much it went from "plug your ears in the breakroom if you haven't watched the episode yet" to forgotten overnight.

I still kinda like it though. And I'm a little in love with Callie despite everything.

>>
>>81310582
Plenty of writers have shown themselves to be complete dipshits when it comes to an ending. Stephen King is notoriously awful at writing endings with "Fuck it, let's just blow it all up" being a common mindset for him. At least he is aware of it and actually poked fun at himself over it in the latest It movie.
>>
>>81310715
It's the JJAbrams problems in reverse: setting up a plot and delivering on it are two entirely different skillsets. For network TV, it is *extremely important* to hype up the show and get the audience invested. If they think something cool with happen in the future, or think that a big payoff is coming, you get your viewership ratings and the show gets to live. Conversely, shows that don't pull in the expected ratings can get cancelled before their first season is even finished. Nobody has any patience for whether the show is going anywhere in the long run, they need to be sold on the hype from the first episode or its a dead show. And as long as the hype train keeps rolling, so does the money and you get more seasons.

What this creates is a formula where you can't plan on a real ending because your goal is never actually to end. Its to stretch this out into as many seasons as you can. Selling people on future promises is just one of the ways you do that. By the time it actually comes time to end the show, because someone's contract is up or the money ran out, you don't actually give a shit how the finale episode goes because after that ratings don't matter, you have your paycheck and you are out of there. And It is entirely possible that you spent the last 4 seasons hyping up the answer to a mystery which you never actually knew the answer to yourself. Your goal was never to resolve the plot, only to dangle hints about the resolution in front of the audience to get them to tune in next week.

So you have an ecosystem where the people who can hype up a story and generate interest thrive, and at no point is actually being able to write an ending rewarded. So people in the industry get really good at the first part, and never bother to think about the second. Why should they? Thats not the part that gets them paid.

So, true to the source material :^)

On a semi-related note, while I find Tolkien's books pretty boring to read, they translate amazingly well into audiobooks (and I say that as someone who vastly prefers paper books in general). It lends credence to what I've heard about them starting as bedtime stories for his kid.

Guin Saga*
Berserk

Druaga

Robin of Sherwood.

It's a great show that mixes history, mythology, folklore and sword and sorcery elements. RoS is set about 100 years after the Norman Conquest and portrays Robin as a rebel fighting for the Saxons against the Norman Occupiers. It gets my personal pick for the best Robin Hood adaptation. RoS is remarkably bleak compared to other Robin Hood adaptations. Characters die constantly. Including Robin in the Hood himself at one point. This happened because Michael Praed who played the first Robin basically stabbed the production team in the back by landing a role in a production of a Shakespeare play and not telling anyone until the very last day of filming on Season 2.
As a result he was killed off and in Season 3 a new Robin in the Hood introduced based on the second, noble background found in later versions of the Robin Hood legend.

Still a a great show and Season 3 is still very enjoyable.

It really shows that a Historical setting doesn't have to hamstring you creatively when DMing a game.

I wouldn't recommend 5e for this but grab Wolves of God, Lion and Dragon, Darkwood or Dragon Warriors and go to town.

Actually, I just realized something. Crossing this with Cthulhu Dark Ages would be FUCKING LIT.

It's England, Prince Jon is being a shit but what if he's acting that way because he's being manipulated by a secret cabal of Great Old One cultists or Serpentmen.

You could even have an adventure based around a Medieval English version of Innsmouth and have to face Deep Ones with swords and longbows.

Plus the struggle of trying to reconcile the awful truth of the Cthulhu Mythos with a world as motivated by Christian Faith. That bit would require a delicate touch so that the game doesn't turn into:
"HEY CHRISTIANS! YOUR RELIGION IS A HOLLOW LIE, NYA-HA!"

A movie I find really enjoyable is Takeshi Kitano's 2003 version of Zatoichi. Great sword fight and I liked his take on the character. Nice straightforward samurai plot.

In terms of anime I'm surprised no one's mentioned

08th MS Team really does capture the general feel of Battletech. Especially since with the full Total War rules with tanks, infantry and aircraft, it really turns into a combined arms game.

>>
>>81329382
Guin Saga is an odd one, because the novels are early 80's fantasy and the anime takes a long time to really fall into its proper pace. It had a ridiculous first episode, then sort of wandered about, but by the end of the series, when Guin is reduced to just some background character, it really develops into something that makes you understand why it is one of the biggest fantasy influences in Japan, inspiring everything from Final Fantasy to Berserk.

Also, what is wrong with you, if you can't enjoy Berserk or Claymore.
>Almost all of them are the same
Man, I don't even know where to begin with you. You might genuinely be too dumb for anime. It changes a hell of a lot, but that's kinda the gimmick of versions of Escaflowne, having the names and sometimes faces in vaguely comparable plots. The "overall best" version is still the original series.
The movie itself has great music, some great visuals, and the best/least flawed version of Dilandau.

>>81324378
Berserk is the only one I can think of.

And you still need to put up with a little bit from every category you listed. Its all inverted from the usual anime tropes. Guts was passed around the mercenary camp as a kid. And theres a moe spellcaster introduced later. Generally readable. I tend to hate Manga too but I can still recommend it.
>>
>>81329834

For context, Record of Lodoss War was made by Japanese DnD players, and the concept and story of the anime came about from their play sessions.

Ctrl+F'd for this.

Such a wonderful show. I watched it in an actual castle once!

You can break down the D&D-ness of it all, but it never really goes into "superhero" territory. Not that it's gritty or low fantasy or no wizards ever cast a fireball, but it hits such a sweet spot between historical accuracy and Errol Flynn type action.

Believe me anon, it does sting a little to type those words. It has a place in my heart. I even had the actual art book ffs (probably ended up in some clearout sale at some point sadly). But ... as a film itself, it's lacking. The animation can be a bit screwy even by the standards of the time, the performances a bit stiff and it really needed a few more passes at the script (and some fatter wallets in general).

And yet I will watch it. Repeatedly.

Slayers is a realistic depiction of a great PC party. They goof off, throw their weight around, annoy NPCs, demand all the money for any most miniscule work and so on, and so on. 2. King John lost the part of his baggage train that contained the crown jewels while crossing a tidal estuary.
King John made pacts with followers of Dagon, fucked it up somehow, and then they came and got their gold back. I'm sure you could also tie in the White Ship disaster that happened a few generations earlier that led to the Plantagenets gaining the throne in the first place.

The BSG reboot had some great acting (especially from the older folks) and really nailed the gritty, desperate atmosphere, but it was completely undone by its flaws. Basically everything about the cylons was lame, characterization was regularly thrown under the bus for a plot twist, everybody was an unlikable idiot, and the writers had no idea what they were doing and were clearly making up shit as they went along. If everything was bad about the show, it'd be easy to write it off, but because of its good qualities, it was incredibly frustrating. Also, far too many people thought it was amazing.

I didn't like GoT because I figured out what it was made of fairly quickly and it got too boring to watch. Manga just isn't very well written. It's like superhero comics. It goes from cliché to cliché without ever doing anything clever.
I'm not saying this to claim superiority, I really wish it didn't suck. Western comics are just as miserable but with much worse art and much slower releases, and I wish the Japanese put as much thought into writing as they did in the art.

What system should I use for a Princess Mononoke campaign?
>>
>>81335031
That was an interesting dichotomy in Blade of The Immortal, that drove the plot- on the one hand you had these very traditional Kurosawa-style historically-accurate samurai, on the other hand there was a faction of flamboyant anime samurai, with colourful costumes and crazy weapons.
It actually has a historical precedent in the gangs of Kabukimono, Kabuki-inspired crossdressing delinquent samurai.

Ryuutama is pretty much made to run Ghibli films. Might be cool to do it in The One Ring, though you'd have to make up a lot of your own material since the game itself is Lord of the Rings. Both systems focus a lot on the journey, and things outside of combat.

The puppets can be off-putting for some, it took awhile for me to convince a few friends to watch due to them, but the show is good and the puppets are a novelty. The Enigmatic Gale kinda feels like a DMPC of sorts though, he's good at basically everything, has a bunch of magical tools, and moves the plot along a lot like gathering the various party members in season 1 to exposing Kei Gai's resurrection scheme in season 3.

Aside from that I think Zaku II's have a canon armor thickness of around 200mm-500mm with some places reaching 1000mm.
Modern main battle tanks have upwards of 1000mm RHA. Plus we don't know what strange and advanced chemistry makes up that rocket's warhead.
So it's entirely plausible that infantry with AT or in this case AMS for Anti-Mobil Suit could take out a Mobile Suit.

There was a REALLY great show about a group of mercs on a converted stellar cruise ship just trying to make ends meets. It was named like "black star" or "dark sun" or some shit. It was contemporaneous with Lexx/Andromeda/Farscape back in the late 90's. It had 7/10 special effects but the writing was 11/10, one episode the crew just ran out of money and had to take some rando jobs just to make ends meet. Another they need to fix up something on the ship so they take on a bounty and capture the guy who seems like a total schizo, only he turns out to be a aug-hacker who is in psionic content with his ship through his impant and has it attack them even though he's in the brig.
It was like a sci-fi TTRPG campaign put to television.

I've spent the last 20 minutes trying to find it to post it here but I can't find shit since modern search engines are made to shill modern products rather than answer questions. It also doesn't help that while really great to watch it was a definitely a lower budget late night scifi show.

I had the name confused with another show but I managed to find it. It was called starhunter.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starhunter

The rest was totally true. Just a bunch of goofs who couldn't even afford a proper warship and inside got an old starliner on the cheap making ends meet in space. Like watching televised recaps of some homebrew sandbox scifi setting where the writers were playing out their characters.

I think the worst thing about nubsg is there's the unrefined ore of a better show under there. Whether you want to go with human Kobol paganism Vs cylon monotheism or lean hard into the cyclical time stuff or play around with the refugees with guns element or even just do the original premise of hidden roles the TV series properly. There's so many ways it could've been done better. But instead we got a Mish mash of the above that lost direction after season 2.

I didn't mean to say the books or movies were faggy. I mean the answer is faggy.
Saying "Lord of the Rings" in this thread or your holy book of choice is basically a cop-out. A way to avoid making the effort to give an actually thoughtful answer.

>Ryuutama is pretty much made to run Ghibli films.
>Ryuutama is a tabletop role-playing game developed in Japan by designer Atsuhiro Okada, now available in a complete English edition. It is set in a world where the "NPCs" of the village--the bakers, farmers, shopkeepers and healers--set off on a wonderful adventure exploring a fantasy world together. Some people colloquially call it "Hayao Miyazaki's Oregon Trail", because of its heartwarming (in Japanese "honobono") feel of family anime, and its focus on traveling and wonder over combat and treasure.
Is this it? Is this the RPG I have been subconsciously looking for all my life? Is this as good as I hope it is? Is there a catch like an insufferably autogynephiliac weeb community?

I prefer the LotR books, but the movies are great fantasy movies even if they made a lot of characters less heroic. But I can understand that some find the movies too long-winded, especially extended editions.

IIRC it was cited as a source of "inspiration" by the devs and a few aspects of it are literally pulled straight from it like the bladed whip weapon

I really loved the way Magic was portrayed in Robin of Sherwood.

Baron Simon de Belleme setting Robin's bow on fire, cutting him at a distance with a magic sword and tormenting the hero with illusions just feels way more, well magical than going "EXPECTO PATRONUS" and throwing out a fireball.

One game that does seem to capture this feel very well is The Forbidden Lands. That's one I would add to the list of suggested games.

>the only catch is you might not like the rules themselves.
From what I've seen of the rules they look nice and simple, I like minimal games like this a lot. But it also looks like you need a very creative, imaginative group of people to make a good experience out of it since the daily exploration rolls need to be used as a prompt for roleplay. Knowing weebs, I have my doubt this is possible.
