How should I go about marketing it?
I outsourced some funds to Islamabad, Pakistan for them to produce a commercial for the game.
It's a wonderfully terrible commercial.

I was thinking about visiting some local game shops and talking with the workers/owner but aside from that, and talking to you guys, I'm sort of at a loss.
>>
I don't get it.
Is this real or a joke?
>>
>>81295544
You could make a youtube channel where you talk about the game, an official twitter account for it, and a discord server. Basically drum up interest through social media, I'm no publicist so this is kind of the only thing I can think of at the moment.

Cheers for putting the time and effort to make something of your own, I would be interested to hear what the game is about.

But I’m not I’ll bite, what’s the concept
>>
Post a PDF here and if it's good someone will buy it and if it's bad it will become a meme and someone will buy it anyway.
>Minarchy is a tabletop game which is rules light when taking the Tabletop Role-Playing Game genre into account. For those who have never played a Tabletop Role-Playing Game, Minarchy serves as an excellent entry point into the genre.
>Minarchy was created with the intention to help autistic children and teenagers socialize and to serve as an educational aid for home schooled youth.
>May this game manual hold over your thirst to drink the water of far off worlds.
Wtf lol.

The game is 100% real.
I would be happy to answer any questions you guys might have.
There are over 30 professions, over 40 classes and over 25 races.

Generally speaking, I kept the foundation of what it meant to be a TTRPG (table, dice, pen and paper, RPing) and then wiped away almost everything else and started from scratch.

I talk about what drove me to create the book in the foreword.
The pictures I will post are from a proof copy that had some typos so if you see any, they've been fixed.

>>81295835
I paid $237 (lol) to have that commercial created from a young lad in Islamabad named Arsalan.

Dental Hygienists have extremely sharp tool kits.
They require precision and speed to clean effectively.
Naturally a clean mouth leads to better health thus they are healers as well.

>>81296875
The game switches between Battle Phases and Story Mode.
Story Mode brings its own small set of skills that everyone has access to.
Battle Phases are just as you imagine.

I haven't gone full blown Tolkien yet.
But this is actually my 5th book that I've released.
The first four were fiction novels based around our own reality.
After writing that 3rd book, I knew the 4th book would be the last one I wrote based on reality - it's just so boring to write about.

The next book I plan on working on is a children's book or two just for fun but after that in 2022 I plan on starting to write a fantasy novel - likely a collection of short stories - all of which will be based within the world you find in the Minarchy game manual.

>>81297206
I spent around 3 years taking notes intermittently while attending trade school and in May I decided that I would take all my notes and expanded upon them.
I spent May through July getting version 1.0 in order and the last two months finishing up legal work.

That stack of papers you see on the left is all of my original hand written notes.
As for releasing a PDF, I'm not so keen on it.

But - since today is the release day - if you add me on Discord, I will get you a free .epub file.

Honestly anon, I would recommend doing a kickstarter. Commission some basic art pieces, put it on there and say it's for helping autistic children socialize, and see how it goes.

If you do though, make sure you start the kickstarter on a Tuesday morning and end it on a Friday night. For some reason those ones are all the most successful.

Not OP but I'm interested in knowing how to market this kind of thing.
>>
>>81298591
It all depends on how much effort you're talking about.
I'm currently making a list of all the TCG and Comic shops in my area - or anywhere that hosts Friday Night Magic.
I'm going to go to each of these places and speak with whoever is in charge of order stock for the shop.
I'll bring a physical copy with me for them to view and then make an offer for them to buy in bulk at a discounted price.

I might hit up a couple of gas stations in nearby trucking towns.
I don't know how much effort that is but I'm willingly to put that much into it physically.

Monetarily speaking, I don't know how much $200 to $300 a month will buy me in ads or if it's worth it.

Memes aside but this looks really clunky and just sort of sterile. It looks like you're writing down rules from an MMO to be used in a roleplaying game. This section is actually painful to read
>Items, including currency, can be taken to a bank and stored. You can then change characters and transfer items between your characters by taking your character by taking your second character to the bank and grabbing the items your first character left.
What the fuck does that even mean. RPG worlds arent videogame worlds. If I play multiple characters I can play two at once, one isnt in stasis on the log in screen. If I want one character to give a sword to another character, they can meet in the 'story mode' and swap swords.

Now people are interested and will play it and you'll bombarded with free playtesting. I hope this gets a second edition with everything you learn in the next months or years getting sharpened. Like any skill you need to hone it, and you're doing a hell of a lot more to hone their skills than most.

Not sure what went wrong there, they will be missed.

I like story mode/battle separation and race bonuses are flavorful. Although I'd prefer for them to be a set of unorthodox skills, like sleeping outside with no penalty like orcs rather than +to checks that some races have. My only problem with this book is that it looks a bit... Sterile? And editing is kinda off, like for "bubbler" on pic related, paragraph ending "a full year" a sticks out. Or Felineoid race is not on the next page.

If this is a prototype, work on editing, at the very least Shift+Enter for Word should put group things together on the same page. If this is released product, then, well, fuck.

Yeah that was a problem with the proof copy.
I didn't like the way it looked and so I spaced everything out - even if it meant having some blank space at the bottom of a few pages.

It looks way better now, I do however miss the bulletin marks.

>Although I'd prefer for them to be a set of unorthodox skills
If it turns out that some races are so completely out of balance, I would likely change some stuff to not make them absolute trash in v1.5 - if and when it happens.

The only people who no longer require orbs are Librarians.

Or if you reach level 99 in Magic Lore you gain "Blood Into Liquid Magic".

The game doesn't have mana and I felt the need to have players require something in order to use their abilities - that way they can't use them endlessly.

Alternatively, your GM can make magic orbs extremely cheap and then you can run your session as if you didn't have any mana to begin with.

Currency = Mana in this case.

This isn't going to work. Shops buy through distributors. There is a whole supply chain you go through before it gets to your lgs. They simply aren't going to commit their limited floor space to a niche, DIY project that doesn't have an excellent chance in selling. You should look at online distribution, or if you are dead set on selling physical copies in an lgs, see if they'll let you run a game and sell books during your demo, which is unlikely but possible

Honestly...

It's brilliant. It is to TTRPGs what "The Room" or Neil Breen are to cinema. I mean, literally everything I'm seeing is bad, bad, bad.

But it all works because of that.

The lack of art, the center justification, the huge amount of empty white space, "sectors", "Lumberjacking" is so common it's a skill, "The Great Baking Fire", people chugging mushrooms like there's no tomorrow, there's a class power that just lets you find flowers to smoke (I'm going to assume these flowers give you powers, but I wouldn't be surprised if not), another class gets you weed and smack.

Seriously, I can't tell if this is for real or an exercise in RPG Designer Kayfabe, but either way it's a unique product and deserves some attention.

But to actually help the OP and answer their question:

Step 1) Put your product on DriveThruRPG, as you've already realized. It is to RPG PDFs what Wal-Mart is to garbage food and cheaply made Chinese goods. It's the industry standard.

Step 2) Go out to some of the websites that talk games. rpg.net if you want to appeal to people who need a safe space and think orcs are racist caricatures of black people; therpgsite.com if you want to appeal to paranoid incels who spend more time bitching about SJWs in gaming than actually talk about gaming (they like both kinds of gaming there: OSR and AD&D homebrews). Accept the first will ban you in short order, and the second will talk shit about your game. But hey, maybe you can get a few sales.

Step 3) Find some reviewers, and get them copies. Be careful though. I do reviews, but only if I get a hard copy. Why? Because if someone spends actual money to actually ship me actual goods, I'll actually review their product. Lots of folks will do likewise, but some will consider a paragraph or two an acceptable review, and others will just take the stuff and disappear. A good RPG site will have reviews, and a review database, and you can research who will actually put in the work and just ask them if they'd like more free stuff to review.

4) Get some art. Maybe. The truth is art sells RPGs (and, well, everything). But in your case... the lack of art may actually be a feature. Certainly saves you money to not have any.

5) Local Gaming Stores. Can you sell there? Ask them. I'd try to do a traditional print run though, sell the stores some copies (wholesale), and then sell some direct from a little webstore you generate (personally, I'd skip the LGS route and just have DriveThru handle all your sales. Even with their cut.).
>>
>>81308163
>therpgsite.com
He needs to get some art to fill up those empty pages. Man also needs a lot of structuring help. I don't know what he's formatting this game with but it desperately needs bookmarking and a way to easily crtl-f through the game. I also think he could do a little research on formatting, maybe put the bulk of some of the text in columns, maybe change some of the fonts. If he could trust other people to help him with some of the writing that'd also help a lot too. This game unironically has potential.
>>
>>81308256
>This game unironically has potential.
This is borderline bullying. Don't egg him on.
>>
>>81308256

Nyah. Part of the appeal of bad media is that it's bad. Fixing the grammar, layout and fonts, and then adding art, turns a "so bad it's good" product into "man, this is dumb".

"But I think it looks fun and good!"

Cool. But you don't need any of that presentation stuff to appreciate it. The ideas appeal to you already. Meanwhile, the rest of us -need- this thing to be as wonderfully awful as possible.

This may be the Plan 9 From Outer Space

yeah I understand all the rules are what you should have if you want a nice public appearance for your discord server, e-dating and NSFW banning are SUPER good ideas to that regard, but normalizing the "rules apply everywhere" shit is draconian and unnecessary and even vidya games you pay for have begun doing it, just leaves a really sour taste in my mouth that even though op probably wouldn't act on it even if he could I technically broke the rules already by saying "nigger" here this second or posting on /h/
I dunno, it's just going from policing your domain to policing people way out of your jurisdiction and the concept leaves a bad taste in my mouth

>I'm talking about small mom and pop type shops, not the Barnes and Noble type so hopefully getting a display case in a small shop won't be too difficult.

I'm talking about small mom and pop shops as well. Rent isn't cheap, and an lgs owner needs to maximize their retail space. It's very unlikely they are going to devote any space to a DIY project. I also don't know precisely how the distribution chain works for RPG books, but there is every possibility they are contractually obligated to go through a distributor.

Authors, even Indy authors, don't just go sell their stuff at their lgs unless there lgs specifically has some kind of "local project/DIY" stuff. They go through the supply chain, which is why the lion's share of Indy stuff is internet retail only.

Ayala (Basque: Aiara) is a toponymic surname, originally de Ayala (of Ayala), deriving from the town of Ayala/Aiara in the province of Álava, in the Basque Country, northern Spain. It is linguistically unrelated to the Hebrew female given name Ayala, which is of Biblical origin.

It’s an abstract take on Mordheim and really nails a setting of universal stories and ideas being blended together into a vast unknowable city that is everywhere if you look for it.

But I really just want to say I really admire what you’re doing here anon. I see stuff like this, Warpheim, the dimensional jobs in Troika!, Hylics, Meatlandia and the like; And I am always intrigued and inspired by these bizarre settings and systems. Meanwhile I either half bake my ideas, get flighty and work on something else, or lose confidence in it. Perhaps I’m just not disciplined enough, too suggestible to new ideas and concepts; maybe I’ve just been walking in the same mental circle for years.Who knows?

Is this game actually *playable*? All of the meters and the like seemingly do not do anything, and there are very few rules for basic task resolution.

Suppose a GM wants to run a fairly basic fantasy one-off. The players create their characters. The PCs are tasked by a town to track down an elusive, savage monster that dwells in the nearby mystical forest. Bandits try to ambush the PCs along the way. The PCs must cautiously search for tracks in the forest, avoiding its magical dangers, and then finally slay the mighty beast in its own lair.

At what point in the above adventure does Minarchy break down and become unplayable?

Your RPG would be more of a meme that only us here and other weirdos we would show this would play.
You would be basicaly niche RPG, like every other non-DnD game.
What would probably happen is that your game would win an "indie developer rpg" award and that would be those kinda of awards nobody cares for nor ever heard of.

I am sitting down and trying to actually create a character in Minarchy. Is there a rule for starting equipment somewhere? Equipment is very important in this game, particularly since "Magic Orbs" are necessary for classes to actually use their abilities, and each Magic Orb costs 10 silver. Additionally, there are no listed equipment prices for armor, weapons, and other important pieces of equipment.

The character creation process is very opaque, and creating a character is proving quite difficult.
>>
>>81319365

Additionally, the rules seem to imply that Magic Orbs are actually *consumable*. Staffs let you use one type of orb without consuming it, and another passage says, "If you plan on using your abilities a lot, the cost of orbs will add up."

Also, I cannot find any mechanic describing how to actually make a basic attack. I can find rules in the weapons chapter on how to calculate damage, but not how to make an attack to begin with. Are attacks simply automatic damage in this game?

A class whos strength comes from doing what most players never bother doing - calculate weight of carried items. It purely revolves around carried weight by gaining bonuses to armour and damage. Its final ability is to grab enemies into his inventory and being able to carry them for 2x D4 rounds.
>Writer
This class is a support with lots of buffs. He encourages teammates to fight by promising to write a great story about their heroic deeds and has self-sustain from drinking cheap wine. This class is famous for "Reality Edit" ability which is a one-time use available only at maximum level, which allows you to add up to three sentences to the rulebook that become canon in your setting (however these sentences may not change game mechanics and can only affect lore or story.). Even GM has to abide this new established lore!
>Gaugemeister
This class power comes from keeping track of all meters (explained in Ch.7) - the more meters are used at the moment, the more powerful he becomes! This class may add +X to any of their stats for 3x D8 rounds by substracting or adding points to any meter currently in use (substracting from 'good' meters such as air meter, sleep meter or lust meter or adding to 'bad' meters such as thirst meter or hunted meter)

I think a good to balance that out would be putting IRL limitations on it - you have a limited ammount of time to write these sentences down - around 20-30 seconds should be enough. Could you please walk us through character creation, step by step, including equipment? I am having trouble figuring out how to actually create and equip a character in this game.
>>
>>81321223
I'm not an author and I do not have full pdf, so I have no idea how it actually works. On a serious note I fully suspect that the game might be unplayable in reality because after looking through screenshots posted here I've never seen description of basic attacks, you seem to be needing magical orbs to do anything. Half of abilities or mechanics are left unexplained. I agree with >>81318978 , we need a short summary of how a game session would go, with minimum crunch description.
>>
>>81321260

Well, by RAW, the game is never unplayable, because Chapter 25 says:
>Some rules aren’t in the game manual and you just have to figure it out for yourself, but at the end of the day, it's for the best – it allows people to play in a manner which they find most fitting.

>If you check the character sheet on the following pages, do you see any place for Mount Health Points? No. Are there Mount Health Points in the game? Yes, 200 Health Points for a common mount, typically. Why? Because some things are better left out of the game manual.

>So, if you feel like something is missing – that’s because it probably is and not an accident. You as a Game Master or Player Character will need to find ways to keep track of various things in game that aren’t clearly explained how you are to keep track of them.

But that clearly is not helpful. There are no rules for starting equipment or even just purchasing equipment, nor are there rules for making a basic attack or even withstanding damage.

I cannot find any rules for making checks or rolls in Story Mode, either, though that could just be me.

Everything SHOULD be clearly explained in the Combat chapter towards the start.

Is there a "standard" starting wealth for character creation? Suppose I am creating a Knight, or a Fighter: can I start with rank 1 plate? Rank 2 plate? What about weapons?

>Everything SHOULD be clearly explained in the Combat chapter towards the start.
The combat "chapter" is exactly one page long. It does not, in fact, explain how to resolve an attack, dealing damage, losing HP, being defeated, etc.

Could you please give us an example of combat, showcasing attacks, damage, losing HP, and defeating an opponent?
>>
>>81322569
An example of typical combat is needed (brief narrative blurb about start of the combat, first few rounds with actions rolls described in detail, combat aftermath). A few examples of when and how characteristics tests are rmade (Dental hygenist wants to scale up a wall made out of sugar, he needs to roll both STR to climb and WIL to resist the disgust of touching such unhealthy substance). Make it as goofy as possible.
Also you need a way to get orbs without spending gold then. Otherwise robbed characters (or even starting characters) with no gold are fucked.
>>81322519
>Do it, Anon.
>I believe in you.

O'kay but could you provide me a PDF or at least screenshots for all meters and rules for encumberence and item weight if your rulebook have any? A page with status effects would also be nice. I don't need a full rulebook, just a few pages would do the job, otherwise I would not understand how mechanics work properly for these 3 classes.

>Is there a "standard" starting wealth
No, there's no standard for starting wealth.

>Suppose I am creating a Knight, or a Fighter: can I start with rank 1 plate? Rank 2 plate? What about weapons?
If you are starting as a Knight, you can wear level 7 plate armor the second you get your hands on it.
If your next question is how do the stats of Rank 1 Plate armor compare to that of Rank 7 plate armor - it's up to your GM.

>The combat "chapter" is exactly one page long. It does not, in fact, explain how to resolve an attack, dealing damage, losing HP, being defeated, etc.
When taking the Combat chapter into consideration with other factors (Class Abilities, Skills, etc).

What would be a "fair" way to determine starting equipment across the party, then?

>When taking the Combat chapter into consideration with other factors (Class Abilities, Skills, etc).
Is a special ability required to make an attack? Many classes do not actually have an attack ability at level 1, such as a Knight. Is it simply impossible for a level 1 Knight to make an attack?

If special abilities are required to make an attack, and they all require Magic Orbs, then are Magic Orbs necessary to make an attack altogether?
>>

Yeh. Thanks for the reference. Are there rules for item weight or encumberence?
>>
>>81322705
>What would be a "fair" way to determine starting equipment across the party, then?
As a GM, would take your character's history and the campaign at hand into consideration.

>>81322705
>Is a special ability required to make an attack?
Special Abilities come from Weapon and Armor bonuses - Special Abilities would be used during your Phase 2.

>Many classes do not actually have an attack ability at level 1, such as a Knight
Tanks in general are weapon based classes.
They have abilities, but they should be just as close to their abilities as they are to their weapons.

>If special abilities are required to make an attack
What?

>and they all require Magic Orbs
Using Weapon and Armor based Special Attacks do not require Magic Orbs.
Only Class abilities require Magic Orbs.
>>
>>81322733
No, not without a good reason.

>>
>>81322752

>As a GM, would take your character's history and the campaign at hand into consideration.
This seems very vague.

How many Magic Orbs are characters entitled to start with? Since every ability uses Magic Orbs, determining the amount a character can start with is very important.

>Using Weapon and Armor based Special Attacks do not require Magic Orbs.
>Only Class abilities require Magic Orbs.
Could you please explain how a starting character, fresh from character creation, performs an attack with a weapon, then? The one-page combat "chapter" does not cover this.

>How many Magic Orbs are characters entitled to start with? Since every ability uses Magic Orbs, determining the amount a character can start with is very important.
Obviously it depends upon the circumstances of the character and the tone of the campaign.

If the GM wants you using abilities all of the time like in 5e then you should start with loads of orbs.

If the GM wants use of your abilities to be an exceptional thing then you're starting with way less.

Equally, if you're spoiled rich kids or almost-beggars.

A GM can come up with a plot, tasks, enemies or challenges. It is not a GM's job to come up with basic core mechanics, especially if they've paid for the rules.

Then have a recommended number of orbs for different ways to play.

It does though.
I would like to invite you sit in on the first campaign session.
Pretty much everyone is welcome to sit in but you'll be muted as to not disrupt the session.

This is the right mind set.

Actually it is your job as a good GM to come up with basic core mechanics.
At least with this game.
Remember it's rules light.
This is going to end up being great or a complete disaster.

What are some guidelines for "loads of orbs," "way less," and a middle ground? How many Magic Orbs does a hypothetical "spoiled rich kid" start with?

>I would like to invite you sit in on the first campaign session.
It would be more helpful for you to simply explain the basics of making attacks, dealing damage, losing HP, being defeated, etc.

The best way forward is being a skilled GM.

Even if the game is supposed to be rules-light and give responsibility and freedom to the GM, it's always better to describe different possibilities so beginner GMs can make an informed choice instead of having to guess what will lead to the desired outcome. What is the game like when starting with, for example, 10, 50 or 100 orbs?
