It's an old lead figurine from a collection I made years ago. Copyright is 2005 (MMV).
This one, I handled so often, the paint came off because it was cheap chink shit so I decided to fix my mistakes by painting it again so I could put it back with the rest of them. The base is pure black instead of dirt-colored because every base is like that and I still wanted the collection to feel coherent.

Alright, so I bought an airbrush.

I have this as access to a compressor, but before I hook anything up, I want to make sure I'm not going to fuck myself out of my airbrush.

Will something like this work at all? My initial instinct is hell no, because it's for up to 150psi and my airbrush is 8-20. It claims it's automatic, but it's also for filling car tires, so I'm pretty sure automatic means something different here.

So, can I risk it, or is this totally unsuitable? I've got no problem buying a compressor, I just don't want to do it if I have a fine one right here.

Rather flat. Everything needs to be touched up with some highlighting as there's not enough contrast right now.
>>
>>81296930
>All the highlights or just certain ones?
Mostly the skin and the cape, especially the cape. Get that contrast going, make your dark darkers and your brights brighter. This is a character so I'm assuming you wanna go all in right? Also highlight the metallics, it was a gamechanger for me once I started going up to silver when highlighting gold.

>what you thinking of doing for the boots?
Honestly, that's it. It's a test print after all, so I kinda wanna keep it simpleish. I also have a ton of shit to paint and tend to take too long on each model, so I don't mind training for speed a little bit.

Starting to get into the hobby, /wip/ I have some questions I need to ask.

If superglue is the gold standard of glue from plastic to resin to metal, does it have any effects on miniatures besides fusing them together?
I've read that some glues somewhat "melt" their plastic to try and fill in their gaps. Does "Lepage" superglue (sold from a nearby hardware store) do this?
Like I've been told that with push-fit miniatures like the discontinued 40k cadian models I should not glue the holes, but instead the arms in place.

What is the general "rule of thumb" order in miniature when painting after assemblage?
Do I start on the larger details of the miniature first, then work on the smaller details then add a wash?
Then after said wash I go back over the details avoiding where the wash (meant to shade) collected?
Is edge highlighting necessary or just a style that Citadel encourages?

Does anybody have experience with WarColour's Nostalgia88 paint line?
I want to use their Goblin green and sunburst yellow to make classic sand bases because I have some miniatures that I feel would look good with those bases.

That's all I can really think about off the top of my head.
Any suggestions and advice would be appreciated.

Okay, who thought Nostalgia Heil Hitler was a good idea for a name of a paint line?
>>
>>81297476
Most important question, what are you building and painting?

Plastic glue melts plastic pieces together. Superglue adheres them, meaning the glue is what holds them together With superglue you get the bonus of being able to toss them in the freezer to break the glue bonds to rebuild them if you so choose at a later date, plastic glue turns two pieces into one. And plastic glue only works on plastic.

Large details to small is best. You might have to touch up where the wash is over done. Edge highlighting is to have details have more pop and stand out, you should do it at least on hard edges and where details overlap.

No experience with the paint line you've mentioned
>>
>>81297476
Superglue just holds stuff togethers.
Plastic glue is what "welds" plastic into a single piece.

Push fit you should trim about 1/3 of the peg off then glue will work fine.

Big to small, dark to light.

Edge highlights are just a stylistic choice, you can do much the same by painting bright and shading dark.
>>
>>81297476
>for gluing
Plastic - humbrol liquid poly (little glass bottle with brush)
Metal - Araldite 2 part epoxy.

gluing plastic minis is not rocket science, it takes very little glue.

>for painting
generally you want to paint in order of >primer>base>layer>highlight. washes will most likely be between base and layer.
General rule - 2 thin coats.

research the colours you NEED, look into why they are used and how you intend to use them.

To benefit the most from acrylic paint should consider getting a wet pallet, and possible an acrylic paint thinner, though you can also thin it with water.

Ultimately its up to you to learn paint methods and assembly cuz at the end of the day they're just fucking miniature toys.

Okay then so for a little "all purpose go-to glue" is superglue the way to go?
>>81297781
>Push fit you should trim about 1/3 of the peg off then glue will work fine.
Can you elaborate on that some more?
The Citadel push fit sprues have a little hole for them to go in. Is this where I put the super glue in and push the object into?
>>81297887
>gluing plastic minis is not rocket science, it takes very little glue.
I know I just want to make sure that I don't manage to screw up.
I appreciate the glue suggestions.
The reason I mentioned Lepage glue (pic related) is because I have some at home I bought from a local hardware store because I needed to use it for a little home repairing.
I don't want it to go to waste, but is it really a reliable glue for miniature assembly? For Metal, resin, and of course hard plastic?
>consider getting a wet pallet
I remember a thread a while ago about discussion of a DIY wet palette and one lad suggested a ferrero rocher plastic container. A 15 piece one if I recall correctly so I'll get that wet palette container and the chocolate is nice.
>>81297684
Okay I giggled reading that, anon. Thank you.
WarColour's Nostalgia88 paint line is meant to emulate the late 80s Citadel paint line hence its naming.
I would greatly appreciate if any of you are willing to share your experience with the paint line.
I find the sand green bases (with some flicks of yellow) charming with cartoonish looking miniatures. There may be more accursed 1999 zoomers like myself that share the same point of view when looking at old miniatures and their goblin green bases.

Superglue (everything with "cyanoactylate" or "CA" on the bottle) works by forming a hard microcrystalline lattice between parts. It doesn't melt anything. Its biggest problem is that it flexes poorly and can shatter when dropped, which is why that other anon mentioned 2-part epoxy. IMO epoxy's toxicity and the general pain in the ass of handling it and holding the mini while it sets are absolutely not worth it. It's much easier to pin and superglue something.

>order of operations
That's an individual style thing. I prefer to paint mid to dark to light. Edge highlighting is only one (complicated and often irritating) way to handle volumetric contrast, and I usually recommend blacklining to newbies because it's a LOT easier.

>Nostalgia 88
Is meant to knockoff the formulations and pigment mixes of the 1988-era GW paints. I've never used it, going for Coat 'D Arms and Privateer P3 (which are meant to do the same)

I forgot about that part.
To my knowledge from this Warhammer video (with Daddy Duncan Rhodes)https://youtu.be/ENUE0GyQr_o?t=584

>>
>>81298605
Alright bud, I think you are over thinking it all and worried about messing up. As for removing some of the peg and gluing in a pushfit, you remove the peg to give the glue somewhere to go and because all molds have an acceptable range of variation that can cause minor difficulties in getting them to fit. The super glue you posted seems fine. Don't expect to do great the first time, embrace the fact that it won't go perfectly, have fun, and learn.

>>
>>81300542
This, taking a photo of your mini is a great way to see the minor details you might have messed up and get critique, but the view the IRL view will always be a bit different and in the case of minis intended to be used in a wargame, from far closer that you will normally view them from
>>
>>81300560
>>81300542
Thing is it doesn't look great in person either. I'm not too fussed about it, at least not enough to seriously try to fix it. I was mostly just seeing if I could do a whole mini using almsot nothing but drybrushing over a dark base coat.

The bits that attach to the mini keep ending up tearing out the inner magnet when I remove them afterwards. I could just not be waiting long enough for the glue to dry before putting the matching magnet on it too right? Maybe I'm retarded.
>>
>>81301750
Depends on the size of the magnets. Always wait longer than you think for the magnets to dry. And if it's still not working, you can weaken the magnetic field and almost guarantee that the magnet stays in place by gluing some paper over the magnet and plastic or using some tape.

Recently picked up the hobby again after like 18years break and looking for tips/feedback on my painting.

1. Completely forgot about moldlines so wont be doing that mistake again.
2. Drybrushing is new to me so im still learning.
3. Even though its a DARK angel im painting it looks a bit dark to me. I laid a basecoat of Abbadon Black but should I have gone for a White base?

Any tips are welcome.

>>
>>81304871
Damn that pick got ugly, sorry for that.
Hope you can see it nonetheless.
>>
>>81304871
You can still see some of the black through the green, you need to apply more than one coat of green. Give it multiple thinned down coats until you have complete coverage, then work on learning to highlight and shade the green for a nice colour transition from dark to light.
>>
>>81304942
Noted, thanks.
>>
>>81304871
Sure, a few things but pick whichever you feel like doing or all:
1. Practicing some smooth coats as other anon suggested. Will help you in all areas of painting
2. Work on highlights to help bring out details, I think I see some but it helps to do two layers of highlight, a rough and a finer highlight
3.Coincidentally work on shadows, that is easily done with say a shade being brought to recesses

Lots of tutorials out there, just tweak colours to your preference.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQrABKAtPew&ab_channel=JuanHidalgoMiniatures happens to just be one of the ones I enjoy since it's clean and methodical

As a tabletop mini it'd probably look fine.

I went through a phase making basic industrial/steampunk terrain.
Buy yourself some apple barrel/folk art paint and huge cheap craft brushes. This paint is for your walls and even most details. Don’t waste expensive hobby paint.
Some mogepodge as a primer/sealer will help the terrain be more durable and resistant to humidity. I squirt some black craft paint into the podge jar and mix it up to make a black primer. Even for white walls just start with black so the crevices are dark. Then drybrush with a massive craft brush up to your lighter layers.
Decorative jewelry section is a source of gears and snap jewels that can be scifi done cameras or buttons for wall panels.
Some painters tape can be used to make shapes like stripes and big arrows on the wall to paint in a bright color like blue to give it a science lab kind of feel.
Wall insulation is cheap and better than packing foam.
>>
Is this primer? Retards who spray dollar can hardware store paints on their models kept cluttering up my search results in my effforts to find an actual answer.

acrylicosvallejo.com/en/product/hobby/hobby-paint/black-28012/
>>
>>81305290
Any spray paint will pretty much work well anon, spray can paint adheres really well to plastic so it will act as primer if it is not labelled as such.
>>
>>81304775
dang
>>
>>81305290
Yes. It goes one thin and works great. I use AV's white as well with no chalking issues.
Hardware store spray paint does work for the purpose of priming, it is simply a bit thicker and has a danger of more easily clogging details. Works good on terrain though

I only have experience with their airbrush/brush on primers so I can't vouch for their sprays but the airbrush primer is pretty good (I assume it's the same paint)
I switched over to them completely from GW primers, it has a very nice matte finish that accepts paint well, though the layer doesn't seem to be as strong as GW primer, so if you touch your mini a lot before varnishing you might rub off paint easier
>>
>>81305561

His audience is people who don't like painting but want to at least have basic level presentable armies.
I am torn. On one hand he is actively courting people in the hobby who don't enjoy the hobby aspect (I will never wrap my brain around people who don't like painting in a painted model centric hobby), and giving them techniques that will keep them from advancing. Providing dead end solutions.
On the other hand its not like those people aren't flooding into the hobby anyway and at least a basic bitch painted army is better than greytide or an army spitefully fingerpainted 3 colors to be tourney legal

>>81305844
I own more expensive brushes but no shit, I've been using a Testors 3/0 for a lot of my details lately. Like from a Michaels craft store, don't even think most game stores sell them.
Army Painter Wargamer Regiment brush has stood up shockingly long as a medium size workhorse.
Then back to the craft store to get a check multi-size pack of brushes. All the big work, and junky work, and drybrushing.
Treat every brush you have with Masters Cleaner & preversor and generally kepp them clean and they last ages.
I'm a total Vallejo Model Color shill. Best consistent quality paint brand that doesn't have any weird quirks or isn't overpriced. Depends on what you're painting, but I find many uses for stong yellow, red, blue paints (le primary colors). Yellow especially can shift the shade of red and green paints for highlights so you aren't buying 50 shades of the same basic color.

>two make up brushes for drybrushing
>brush soap
Do you have no paints at all? If so, you might want to get a Vallejo starter set (Game or Model) if most of its colours look useful for you

That'd be doable, felt pens are fairly common in Gunpla and metallic ones in particular are popular for picking out little mechanical details (Bandai even do their own metallic Gunpla Markers which I can confirm are p. good). The only issue I can think of for doing freehand with them is that markers tend to have quite rounded tips rather than fine points, so sharp angles would be tricky

Like I said, he knows his audience. He isn't going after people who want to continuously improve forever, he is talking to people who want a "quick fix" to make models that squeak by as tabletop quality and stagnate at that skill level forever. Based on my FLGS, there are a lot of people into 40k who almost seem to resent having to paint models, so I'm sure his audiences loves his tips.
>>
>>81306091
More people at the flgs gettinng models painted is good, even if they are in the hobby for the wrong reasons. I'd rather play against an army with a low end paintjob than no paint at all.
>>
>>81306110
Hence why I'm torn. A meh painted army is better than unpainted, but when I see these people its a "why the fuck are you here?" moment for me internally. Can't control the world I guess.

>>
>>81307992
Real muscle would be more purple as seen on your model near the soulder. Every end of the muscle would end in tendon, which are grayish. To add some colour variety mix in yellow, which would represent fat, near the tendon instertions.
If you want to take it further you could try to paint the deep fascia, a thin layer on every muscle. Which would be whitish clouding the muscles.
>>
>>81308041
I'll try out a purple shade on it then and use some yellow near de tendons. Thanks man!

His refusal to wear a respirator (WHICH HE ALREADY FUCKING OWNS) when pouring resin when making terrain has resulted in him becoming sensitized to several different kinds of resin at this point.

He's also the only person I have ever heard of who has chemically burned themselves (his face got all swollen too) by using a metric fuck ton of superglue without opening a fucking window.

He also uses a blowtorch on Styrofoam inside his house.

And thats just the shit I can remember.

easiest way to get the whole mini into the depth of field of your lens is to take picture from further away. Take high resolution pics and crop out all the dead space afterwards. Don't use digital zoom, lense zoom only.

To be fair, I think it might have been an allergic reaction. People usually don't react to super glue but you can develop an allergy by using it too often or too heavy. I can't use super glue anymore, I only need to inhale a little bit, just enough to smell it and my nose starts dripping, eyes start swelling etc.
It sucks and I clearly can thank the hobby for it. Everything is fine, then one day you decide to glue an entire army in one day and you're fucked for life.
Had my windows opened by the way.

>Why the fuck does my guardsman have a hard cock for a Lasgun barrel?
I know that your question is rhetorical, anon, but:

It could be a recast. That's the easy answer.

The more complicated answer is that decades ago, back when Citadel used to have a massive warehouse with shelves of bins filled with metal bitz and you could still order them separately by part number, they had a terrible accident where several shelves crashed over and together Mr. Bean-style, spilling all the bins' contents out onto the floor.

Instead of employing the manpower to separate millions of tiny metal bitz, they first offered to sell them by the pound via mail order. You could order many pounds worth of bitz at once, but ya got whut ya got. They didn't bother to organize, sort, or separate things at all. I went in with a buddy to order a few pounds, and ended up with a Space Marine Chaplain, a couple of BFG Imperial Navy escort hulls, and a Kasrkin with a shriveled foot, amongst a bunch of other less useful things.

Perhaps yer lad was a refugee from that same event all those years ago.

Your photography is impeccable, friend.

I've followed some of your progress, here. I have to applaud you for finishing your Gravis Armour Captain. Mine's still in pieces. As to your earlier question, though, yes - I think you overdid it with the dry paint. Is that Chronus Blue, then? The highlights on the gorget and the gauntlets make sense, but the helmet seems swathed in it, as if the whole thing is highlighted, and that's not how that's supposed to work. You probably had too much dry paint on the brush or went over it too many times.

For the gold on the plastron and greaves, I'd heartily recommend a wash. The "official" choice is probably Seraphim Sepia, but I have come to appreciate how Reikland Fleshshade looks instead. That my ladz wear red armour might have something to do with that, though.

Finally ... I noticed your transfers look a little rough, especially on the left poleyn. Watch the transfers video in the OP. He knows what he's talking about.

Thanks its just diy lightbox and iphone 11. Yes thats chronus blue and yes I just swatted the whole face. This is my second time using dry paints I still need some practice. For the gold wash I use snakebite leather contrast since I like the dark colour it leaves but again, Im probably using too much. Ive only started painting a month ago.

My personal experience is that citadel brushes suck. To be fair, I'm an inpatient noob and I keep pushing brushes and get so focused I neglect to keep them clean.
