a bit unfair to newcomers to have all those lineups for next year already set; as I said, we need an elo decay system, so that staying in the top 100 for a long period would be more difficult, and newcomers will have their chance to make an appearance there, and in big invitational tournaments

Just made it to 1500 Lichess, lads. I used to be 1200 Chess.com 5 years ago, so I'll get my old back rank soon. The game that sealed the deal for me, playing white. I was a bit drunk with no idea what to play against the hungarian so forgive me. I also hate playing agaist the siciliian but that's another story.

Has lichess changed their puzzle setup since june?
Haven't played since then and I've come back and done some puzzles and now have my highest rating ever
>>
>>81295542
your rating deviation probably went up
high rd = high gains / losses per puzzle

If you're getting more than ~10 points each time you solve a puzzle correctly it's because of the rating deviation. Once you get to your proper rating you'll stop getting so many points per puzzle

I downloaded my stats and noticed that I don't play certain openings at all. Like in 50 games with white I played only 4 times e4 and almost never played e4 e5 as black, so I tried learning some lines for this and it's kinda fun to progress like this by exploring new things.
Queen's gambit was really spicy in the 1500 range because many ppl actually accept it, tiher immediately or later after developing knights.
Ruy Lopez turned out to be kinda fun, my grandpa used to attack my horsey like that all the time, I hated it as black.

I always decline the queen's gambit so the position is more similar to the french. I was thinking of learning the ruy lopez but the berlin defence leads to an ugly position for white, in my amateur opinion. I'd like to work on the Catalan, or King's Gambit next which I used to play a lot when I was lower rated.

The problem is blitz gives you bad habits. You start playing moves in rapid that feel like they seem like they're fine but you haven't actually calculated. That's bad. It happened to me. My rapid rating got stuck for a while in addition to my blitz.
>>
>>81289989
1200-1800 is all within 1SD of average. Going up 500 elo without trying is highly unusual nevertheless, but less unusual than going from 1700 to 2200. In a match between a 1700 and a 1200 the 1700 is a 47:3 favorite.

Perhaps a combination of being underrated/overrated, perhaps some knowledge has "settled", and perhaps your behavior has changed. It's not that rare for me to see players that could be say 1200 get stuck at 500 for no reason other than that they don't want to think about their moves.
>>
>>81288881

>>
>>81291433
You forced a trade that gave white a winning opposition in a K+P endgame. The other poster was right and their analysis is correct even if you got butthurt about it. There were several draws in the position but mass liquidation was not it.

Realistically though you lost because of your clock. Personally I'd focus on more the middlegame positional errors and time usage you seemed to have no idea what to do. if you create a bunch of weakness to attack, have 0 open files against 2, and a bishop against a knight you need to be creating tension and threatening to open up lines ASAP. Trying to maneuver your pieces around your cramped position to force trades is not the right idea, you lose tempo.

The game was almost defined by you trying to force unfavourable trades instead of trying to create your own threats.
>>
>>81300182
>Competitive games relaxing

The most relaxing thing to do with chess from experience is to volunteer at a chess club and teach people to play chess and such.
>>
I always get a kick out of stockfish's recommended moves when one side is totally fucked. Here it wants white to sacrifice his last rook just to avoid mate for a few more moves. My favorite is when it recommends throwing every piece available between king and checkmate to delay the inevitable for however many pieces you have to throw in to the path of the cannon ball.

Is kind of useless, even if you was to go for some attack, queen on her own wouldn't make it. And with both knights in game it's easy target - opponent just develops pieces but you have to waste a turn to move your queen.
>6 ... Bg4
Missed classic puzzle moment you missed - remove the defender. Knight protects the bishop, so you could trade knights and then just pick up the bishop.
>6 ... Bg4
Unironically watch Levy's new video on most common mistakes - one-movers section. You didn't really attack his queen.
This move to bring bishop to opponent's half of board is mostly to pin knight when king/queen are still in center, or when you can't get easily attacked back.
>17. ... e5
you would lose queen anyway, better was to take another knight. plus you blocked your bishop like that

complete blunderfest, 1200 rating is totally deserved

Are there any good resources to picking a line vs Sicilian, Caro, etc as white? There's dozens of videos on how to Sicilian with black but not too many for white that I know of. So what's the best way to build a white repertoire for these kinds of stuff?
>>
>>81313239
best way to play against the sicilian is the smith morra
it teaches you how to play with the initiative, how to use the pieces and how to utilize time and development
for the caro is the accelerated panov, you get an iqp as white but you get a nice initiative

both are very difficult to play and require actual pure chess skill and not that much theory
>>

Just another decade or seven and I'm playing on Magnoose's level. It IS just that easy, fellas.

Can somebody decipher her name please?
>>
>>81313239
look in the lichess opening explorer for the master db
i recommend playing the open sicilian:
unlike the smith morra black can't force you into the alapin
against d6 sicilians it usually leads to opposite sides castling positions
against e6 sicilians you also occasionally get those, but it is more positional
the only sicilian it's bad against is 2. a6, but that's also a bad option for black.
>>
>>81311041
To be blunt you're bad enough that you don't really need to worry about anything besides tactics and not blundering. I'd try and follow chess 101 maxims like "Don't bring your queen out early" though, Qd4 isn't just bad it signifies you either didn't learn basic strategy or you ignore it for the lulz. White just plays d3 and Nf3 attacking and you lose momentum for no reason. He can even consider ugly moves like Bd3 to maximize his lead in development short term to blitzkrieg you even though he'll have to move the bishop again later.

Specifically - Nf6 Nxf6 exf6 gives you the initiative for accepting a minor weakness there's no time to capitalise on. Bf5 -> Ng3 -> Bg6 transposes to a better version of a classical caro-kann where you haven't committed to c6 yet. You played neither of these immediately equalizing openings and played Qd4?! instead.

Winning chess when a shitter is mostly about being disciplined enough to execute basic ideas and basic tactics that steamroll 1200 rated shitters.

>>81313239
If you want a small repertoire, just play the alapin and the exchange caro. If you want to gitgud then those lines have quite a bit of theory especially the Sicilian. The open Sicilian mainlines and the advance caro are the critical lines.

Sicilian players at the superGM level are booked up into move 30 or so.
>>
>>81313708
>>81313486
just play the smith morra, intuitive setup and development, it creates great habits
if you win you win
if you lose it was still a learning experience way more than just trying to play out some dumb theory in the open
>>
>>81313395
Improooovememt in chess is always a staircase chart pattern. The 45 degree smooth climb does not exist without some plateaus along the way.
>>
>>81313486
2... a6 and just 3. c4 if you want to be booked up in the open sicilian and avoid the alapin. Learn to play the bind against any Sicilian setup where black allows it by not playing Nf6 early enough. If black plays Nc6, play d4 immediately, otherwise play noncommittally.

>>81313737
In practice Black players never remember their own theory and you're usually out of theory somewhere between move 5-15 at shitter ELOs.

Smith Morra just doesn't work as a way to dodge theory because black can just decline the gambit and force the alapin and not even a great alapin line for white. So not only do you have to understand alapin theory, you have to understand smith morra theory to not get clowned by a booked up black player who knows what they're doing. It's more dangerous to play the smith morra on intuitition than to play the alapin on intuition.

The value of the smith morra is as a surprise weapon which is why I don't really like it because it's mostly teaching you to clown shitters.
>>
>>81314136
smith morra is not a way to dodge theory
it's a way to play an opening that teaches you something about chess as a game and it's conducive to improvement because of the style of play that's required from white

>>
>>81314614
If it makes you feel better i always guess too low on eloguesser. You should play e6 if white puts the bishop there on move 2. Then d5 unless white plays the critical move Qe2 in response to e6. If that is played you play Nc6. Qe2 prevents you from tempoing the bishop with d5 because your e pawn is now pinned (so only defender of d5 is your queen).

I've had about +20 rating from last 12 games consistently for like 300 rating at this point, I'm saying underrated because I'm still climbing and haven't plateaued yet. but it will come.
The fun part of that game was that my opponent proposed takeback 3 times (and since I'm a good boy I accepted them all).
The exchanges on a queen side were a bit messy, I did indeed an error there but noticed I can trap his knight and got an edge, that was fine.

You play it a bunch and then learn the lines that correspond to the moves people most frequently play against you. That goes for every opening but with something as complex as the sicilian it's worthwhile to triage things in categories of things to learn right now, things to learn eventually, and rare sidelines you will see once in 500 games that you don't need to devote time to.

At the same time my chesscom rapid rating was ~1600, I got a sub 1000 perf rating OTB. I lost against TWO U1000 players. At the time I was also 1800 correspondence.
When I hit ~1700 rapid chesscom, I got to a 1100 rating OTB.

I think that's a rather extreme disparity and I've played less than 10 OTB games ever but it has made me take online ratings with a serious grain of salt.
>>
>>81316143
>>81317298
Like I don't know my FIDE rating but like I'm literally playing against 1800 correspondance players right now and i'm regularly going "lmao this guy is a joke". I know chesscom ratings aren't lichess ratings but lichess seems even more inflated.

I probably would have to play more OTB games to really know what the hell my rating was.

Just had a comfy draw on lichess. We were both utterly confused by the endgame we wound up in. He had dark square bishop and I had three pawns. I knew it was winning but I didn't know the procedure. So I figured out the point of Bc5 in the englund. The idea is to gambit a second pawn (or a knight to make it more tempting) to open up the queen and allow Bxf2+, winning the queen. I didn't see it and he got me. However this game went on for... 104 moves. We got down to knight vs rook endgame with one pawn for black. Black then allows me to capture that pawn. This is a pretty uncommon scenario and is a draw. I offer draw. He doesn't understand it's a draw. We play out to the full 50 move rule. He also did not believe me when I explained the rule.

>Which of these should I learn to be the most annoying cunt possible?
TbH I played so many of those alapins and Grand prix that I consider them on par with the London and they're all annoying because online you'll play against them over and over again.
Also for this reason you'll find that most Sicilian players are pretty booked up on them since you play them every day.
Personally I would learn the Grand Prix, I think that system gives a more dynamic middle game even against a booked up opponent.
The others are much easier to contain imo but have more move order tricks
>>
>>81321269
Oh. That maybe explains the timing. Back then i was only playing e4 with white. I learned queen's gambit maybe six months ago. To date the only Bc5 stuff i encountered involved black not playing the trap correctly. All the englund stuff i learned branched off from the main line with Nc6 and Qe7.
>>

There is a rating logjam around the starting number. Just below the starting number will be many people who tanked their rating way down when they started and have since climbed back up. These people can be somewhat underrated as they're competing in a pool full of others in the same situation. Just above the number will be a significant percentage eho have won a few games immediately on sign up but are not good at all. So if you're around 1400 on lichess (rapid) or 1100 chesscom, starting a new account at 1500 and 1200 respectively may be easier competition for about 150 points worth.

It means that you're not good at chess. It has zero application outside of this. People incorrectly believe that being good at chess is a sign of intelligence. It is not.

Being good at chess is a sign of certain types of intelligence. Mainly pattern recognition and processing speed. I think most modern IQ tests (real ones, not the online things) test for 6-9 different facets of intelligence. So being good at chess does have a positive correlation towards high IQ. But being good at chess does not mean you are smart, and being bad at chess does not mean you are dumb. It just means you are good (or bad) with those specific facets of intelligence.
You could have god tier memory, pattern recognition, and processing speed, but be borderline retarded in other facets of intelligence. You would be very good at chess and have a low IQ.

If you look at it statistically being good at chess has a slight correlation towards high IQ but it's not significant enough to draw any real conclusions about peoples intelligence just based on how they play.

You are too bad to play blitz. You will make little to no progress. 10|0 should be the shortest game you play, I would suggest 10|5 or 15|10.

>What does it mean if I'm bad at chess?
5|0 is way too fast for a beginner. You don't have the knowledge base yet to play that in a way that isn't near random chance. Chess is not the kind of game where you can put a few months or even a year in and be good by virtue of natural talent. It takes work for everyone. Drilling tactics, endgames, learning theory etc are all steps that can't be skipped to reach whatever your final potential may be.

Should I play and study both e4 and d4 openings as white? I like my King's Pawn games and I'm definitely feeling more and more comfortable navigating those first positions but I wonder if I'm missing out by never playing d4.

I was following along this video's move order and got every move right on the first sequence, each with some 10 minutes of thinking. I am 800 elo right now on .com but maybe could be higher? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYpiThjJEbo

Try out everything and see what you like. Try c4, too. Try b3. Then settle in to whatever kind of game fits best and deep dive on it for a while. For d4 i think the queen's gambit is a good one to experiment with. There is plenty of positional variety, it's not as rote samey structure every time as the london or even the stonewall.
