>>81288863>calendarsa bit unfair to newcomers to have all those lineups for next year already set; as I said, we need an elo decay system, so that staying in the top 100 for a long period would be more difficult, and newcomers will have their chance to make an appearance there, and in big invitational tournaments

Just made it to 1500 Lichess, lads. I used to be 1200 Chess.com 5 years ago, so I'll get my old back rank soon. The game that sealed the deal for me, playing white. I was a bit drunk with no idea what to play against the hungarian so forgive me. I also hate playing agaist the siciliian but that's another story.
>>812950932500 on lichess, 900 on chess

>>812951081500 is the default rating but gratz anyway
>>81295472Thanks, Bro. Only really playing the Italian or French Defense for now, and just focusing on not being a shitter at tactics. Might learn the Catalan just so I don't have to play the Shitcillian anymore.
Has lichess changed their puzzle setup since june?Haven't played since then and I've come back and done some puzzles and now have my highest rating ever
>>81295542your rating deviation probably went uphigh rd = high gains / losses per puzzle
>>81295542If you're getting more than ~10 points each time you solve a puzzle correctly it's because of the rating deviation. Once you get to your proper rating you'll stop getting so many points per puzzle
>>81295539I downloaded my stats and noticed that I don't play certain openings at all. Like in 50 games with white I played only 4 times e4 and almost never played e4 e5 as black, so I tried learning some lines for this and it's kinda fun to progress like this by exploring new things.Queen's gambit was really spicy in the 1500 range because many ppl actually accept it, tiher immediately or later after developing knights.Ruy Lopez turned out to be kinda fun, my grandpa used to attack my horsey like that all the time, I hated it as black.
>>81295615I always decline the queen's gambit so the position is more similar to the french. I was thinking of learning the ruy lopez but the berlin defence leads to an ugly position for white, in my amateur opinion. I'd like to work on the Catalan, or King's Gambit next which I used to play a lot when I was lower rated.
>>81295715>I always decline the queen's gambit so the position is more similar to the french.in the french white has their pawn on e5 in the declined QG black does NOT have their pawn on e4major difference
>>81295748I've had white take a lot which leads to a position similar to the exchange variation. Not the same as the normal french exchange because the position isn't symmetrical.

just threw my mouse at my monitor after losing a third game in a row to loose pawns in end game, 700 bucks down the shitter. i took up this stupid game cos it was supposed to be relaxing, but i rage harder than in other online games. guess competition just isn't for me.
>>81300182buy a physical set, some chess books, a bottle of whiskey and relax while learning
>>81297624The problem is blitz gives you bad habits. You start playing moves in rapid that feel like they seem like they're fine but you haven't actually calculated. That's bad. It happened to me. My rapid rating got stuck for a while in addition to my blitz.
>>812899891200-1800 is all within 1SD of average. Going up 500 elo without trying is highly unusual nevertheless, but less unusual than going from 1700 to 2200. In a match between a 1700 and a 1200 the 1700 is a 47:3 favorite.Perhaps a combination of being underrated/overrated, perhaps some knowledge has "settled", and perhaps your behavior has changed. It's not that rare for me to see players that could be say 1200 get stuck at 500 for no reason other than that they don't want to think about their moves.
>>81291433You forced a trade that gave white a winning opposition in a K+P endgame. The other poster was right and their analysis is correct even if you got butthurt about it. There were several draws in the position but mass liquidation was not it.Realistically though you lost because of your clock. Personally I'd focus on more the middlegame positional errors and time usage you seemed to have no idea what to do. if you create a bunch of weakness to attack, have 0 open files against 2, and a bishop against a knight you need to be creating tension and threatening to open up lines ASAP. Trying to maneuver your pieces around your cramped position to force trades is not the right idea, you lose tempo. The game was almost defined by you trying to force unfavourable trades instead of trying to create your own threats.
>>81300182>Competitive games relaxingThe most relaxing thing to do with chess from experience is to volunteer at a chess club and teach people to play chess and such.
I always get a kick out of stockfish's recommended moves when one side is totally fucked. Here it wants white to sacrifice his last rook just to avoid mate for a few more moves. My favorite is when it recommends throwing every piece available between king and checkmate to delay the inevitable for however many pieces you have to throw in to the path of the cannon ball.

>play out a lost endgame>opponent blunders his rook and losesI wonder how many wins sportmanship fags lose out on because they resign early
>play brand new 1500? in his first game on the site>plays okay. bad but didn't hang anything major.>get weird position that was a little tedious to pick apart>win>go spectate his next game for fun>he tries some Qh5 stuff and promptly hangs his queen, black does not realize the queen can be taken, black resigns in an even position for 1500?'s first winNot fair. Why do I have to work hard to finish this guy and the next game he's giving away instantly for free. Hmpf.
>>81304670That's why you don't resign. Make them prove they can finish the job. I have bamboozled so many wins and stalemates from endgame fuckups it's silly.
>>81304874I like to be on the opposite end of this. It improves my ability to convert, sometimes even when I'm riding on increment and the opponent has plenty of time to come up with trappy moves.
>>81304669use a trip so i can filter you
>>81305260How about you give the sh*nxi a try before blindly hating because you're a 1400 and gothamchess's course didn't boost you to 1500. Unironically, I garuntee the shanzi wall would teach you more than those money grab courses
>>81304874That's a great strategy to improve your rating, but it doesn't help you get better to push wood around while praying.
>>81304203I'm talking more total beginners than wannabe Levy fanboys.
>>81305390Playing on in a losing position is not just about hoping that the opponent stalemates you when up a million pieces or whatever. Setting up perpetuals or identifying opportunities to transpose into an endgame that is drawn even though the opponent is up a piece is a legitimate skill.

How does lichess/chess.com correlate with FIDE ?. I personally think that less than 2200 rating doesn't matter. But If you are 2300+ lichess your rating surely corresponds to your chess.com rating and I guess also equal to your FIDE rating +-100 points ?

Are there any good resources to picking a line vs Sicilian, Caro, etc as white? There's dozens of videos on how to Sicilian with black but not too many for white that I know of. So what's the best way to build a white repertoire for these kinds of stuff?
>>81313239best way to play against the sicilian is the smith morrait teaches you how to play with the initiative, how to use the pieces and how to utilize time and developmentfor the caro is the accelerated panov, you get an iqp as white but you get a nice initiative both are very difficult to play and require actual pure chess skill and not that much theory
>+4 elo compares to 30 days agoJust another decade or seven and I'm playing on Magnoose's level. It IS just that easy, fellas.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ItUlZeD3jQ#t=1016Can somebody decipher her name please?
>>81313239look in the lichess opening explorer for the master dbi recommend playing the open sicilian:unlike the smith morra black can't force you into the alapinagainst d6 sicilians it usually leads to opposite sides castling positionsagainst e6 sicilians you also occasionally get those, but it is more positionalthe only sicilian it's bad against is 2. a6, but that's also a bad option for black.
>>81311041To be blunt you're bad enough that you don't really need to worry about anything besides tactics and not blundering. I'd try and follow chess 101 maxims like "Don't bring your queen out early" though, Qd4 isn't just bad it signifies you either didn't learn basic strategy or you ignore it for the lulz. White just plays d3 and Nf3 attacking and you lose momentum for no reason. He can even consider ugly moves like Bd3 to maximize his lead in development short term to blitzkrieg you even though he'll have to move the bishop again later.Specifically - Nf6 Nxf6 exf6 gives you the initiative for accepting a minor weakness there's no time to capitalise on. Bf5 -> Ng3 -> Bg6 transposes to a better version of a classical caro-kann where you haven't committed to c6 yet. You played neither of these immediately equalizing openings and played Qd4?! instead.Winning chess when a shitter is mostly about being disciplined enough to execute basic ideas and basic tactics that steamroll 1200 rated shitters.>>81313239If you want a small repertoire, just play the alapin and the exchange caro. If you want to gitgud then those lines have quite a bit of theory especially the Sicilian. The open Sicilian mainlines and the advance caro are the critical lines.Sicilian players at the superGM level are booked up into move 30 or so.
>>81313708>>81313486just play the smith morra, intuitive setup and development, it creates great habits if you win you winif you lose it was still a learning experience way more than just trying to play out some dumb theory in the open
>>81313395Improooovememt in chess is always a staircase chart pattern. The 45 degree smooth climb does not exist without some plateaus along the way.
>>813134862... a6 and just 3. c4 if you want to be booked up in the open sicilian and avoid the alapin. Learn to play the bind against any Sicilian setup where black allows it by not playing Nf6 early enough. If black plays Nc6, play d4 immediately, otherwise play noncommittally. >>81313737In practice Black players never remember their own theory and you're usually out of theory somewhere between move 5-15 at shitter ELOs.Smith Morra just doesn't work as a way to dodge theory because black can just decline the gambit and force the alapin and not even a great alapin line for white. So not only do you have to understand alapin theory, you have to understand smith morra theory to not get clowned by a booked up black player who knows what they're doing. It's more dangerous to play the smith morra on intuitition than to play the alapin on intuition. The value of the smith morra is as a surprise weapon which is why I don't really like it because it's mostly teaching you to clown shitters.
>>81314136smith morra is not a way to dodge theoryit's a way to play an opening that teaches you something about chess as a game and it's conducive to improvement because of the style of play that's required from white

>>81314597He's just hiding his stratagems.
>>81314614If it makes you feel better i always guess too low on eloguesser. You should play e6 if white puts the bishop there on move 2. Then d5 unless white plays the critical move Qe2 in response to e6. If that is played you play Nc6. Qe2 prevents you from tempoing the bishop with d5 because your e pawn is now pinned (so only defender of d5 is your queen).
>>81314711>hello fat russian man>who's prepposting now, huh?
>>81314706>it doesn't take long to get to your real rating if you really are over/underrated.I've had about +20 rating from last 12 games consistently for like 300 rating at this point, I'm saying underrated because I'm still climbing and haven't plateaued yet. but it will come. The fun part of that game was that my opponent proposed takeback 3 times (and since I'm a good boy I accepted them all). The exchanges on a queen side were a bit messy, I did indeed an error there but noticed I can trap his knight and got an edge, that was fine.

Fucked it up and allowed draw position instead of completely winning. Anyway we had a chat over the analysis board after the game. That was nice. The chat window next to analysis board is one of the things I really enjoy about lichess' design for rare occasions like this.
>>81318932Did you arrange a hook up with the guy? Who is the bottom? I'm guessing you
>>81319138yes he sent me pics. he was wearing thigh highs and a miniskirt.
>>81318932It's always nice when you get a friendly opponent and can chat about the game together. I just wish the chat logs didn't get saved
Yeah i'm on the mood for a queenless middlegame, the petrov is it then
>>81319153>yes he sent me pics. he was wearing thigh highs and a miniskirt. Was this him?
So I figured out the point of Bc5 in the englund. The idea is to gambit a second pawn (or a knight to make it more tempting) to open up the queen and allow Bxf2+, winning the queen. I didn't see it and he got me. However this game went on for... 104 moves. We got down to knight vs rook endgame with one pawn for black. Black then allows me to capture that pawn. This is a pretty uncommon scenario and is a draw. I offer draw. He doesn't understand it's a draw. We play out to the full 50 move rule. He also did not believe me when I explained the rule.
>>81320037This is low effort. He's not even wearing coding socks.
>>81320145I've played against this meme opening so, so many times and lost only a couple of games.""Falling"" for this and then wiping the board with the other player is unironically one of my favorite pastime chess activitiesBut as an advice, stop playing for le epic meme trapz and learn some real chess
>>81320867>But as an advice, stop playing for le epic meme trapz and learn some real chessI was mad that I fell for it so I tried to spite checkmate him. Dubious traps are not my usual style.
>>81318932Analysis board chat is pretty comfy. I'm surprised by how few people analyze the game once it's done though.>>81317155Just switched from being a d4 to an e4 player and I don't really know what to do against sicilian. Which of these should I learn to be the most annoying cunt possible?
>>81320145I remember Rosen made a video on this like a year ago and for the next couple months chesscom was swarmed with pajeets trying this stupid shit.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oksV18QmCwo [Embed]
>>81321217>Which of these should I learn to be the most annoying cunt possible?TbH I played so many of those alapins and Grand prix that I consider them on par with the London and they're all annoying because online you'll play against them over and over again. Also for this reason you'll find that most Sicilian players are pretty booked up on them since you play them every day.Personally I would learn the Grand Prix, I think that system gives a more dynamic middle game even against a booked up opponent. The others are much easier to contain imo but have more move order tricks
>>81321269Oh. That maybe explains the timing. Back then i was only playing e4 with white. I learned queen's gambit maybe six months ago. To date the only Bc5 stuff i encountered involved black not playing the trap correctly. All the englund stuff i learned branched off from the main line with Nc6 and Qe7.
>>81321217Yeah i noticed if they do come over to analysis board lots will only stay until the graph is generated, look at their stats for a couple seconds then leave. I'm always in there for at least five or ten minutes after every game.
>bloonder hard>let the time run out instead of resigningwhy are Pajeets like this
Fuck chess.com and their “sportsmanship”. I don’t want to play against those “people” who open with 1.d3 1.e3 1.Nc3 1.b3 1.g3.
>-8>+7all around me are familiar faces, worn out places, worn out faces
>>81323119Just play casual, breh. I've been playing 2000 lichess shitters in casual lately (me being a 1800 gigashitter) and it's brought me more confidence than a hundred won ranked games.
>>81321217>few people analyze the game once it's doneif the game was interesting, I make a bookmark and do the analysis later, even 10 days later
I'm looking to pick up a new set soon. Might buy online or check local stores/antique shops.Have any of you gotten anything nice recently? Post your sets.
Do you prefer the chesstempo or chessable opening trainer?

>>81323742Have you considered listudy? You ever have those days where you play like garbage but still manage to win? Played a few games today and blundered obvious tactics and lost a piece in each but only managed to win because the opponents blundered back worse or just didn't notice the tactic in one case. Feels pretty shitty I don't even want to keep playing today.
If i become skilled at chess, how will that translate to actual warfare if happen to become an officer ?
>>81324103Chess is less theoretical warfare and more applied autism.
I completely ruined my brain with bleetz. The only things I now look for in my games are cheap tactical tricks. I have become virtually incapable of making sound positional moves.

Chess is to high for me. I've studied some lines and everytime I make them in games I remember the idea but always get the move order wrong. This is so annoying. From winning to losing just because you confuse the order of two moves.
>>81324533can't you use a chess-related pic instead of a totally random one?

I managed to lose this endgame in a blitz game. I know not a lot about endgames and thought there is no way he could break through on the queen side because of its 3 vs 4. What is the best qay to approach this? I thought I should just try to walk my king to kingside and create a past pawn there and ignore the queenside but he pushed a4 and b5 and got me.
I bet he's feeling really good about avoiding the fried liver...
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA GOOD JOB DUMBASS
didn't even realize it is a checkmate, I was like "oh nice fork, free rook"
>>81329172and yes I fucked up the opening and my bishop could have get trapped
>>81329172Bb4 usually isn't the best if white hasn't already played Nf3. you're better off playing Be7 or Nbd7 after Bg5.
>surely he wont let me move the knight there right?well..
>>81329276in restrospect I would go c6. this was my first time in this line as black and paniced. I just ate two bebab tortillas and played that brain dead on automatic.
>>81327171play on the side where you have the pawn majority
>>81324179Take a week break and comeback to rapid with a fresh account. That's what I did after becoming a boolet coomer
any fans of the purple setup here? looks very sharp and clean to me
>opponent plays the ruy lopez>after i play a6 he goes Bc4>i play Nf6, he plays Ng4 and just lets me get a much better version of the two knights
Playing vs maia is pretty decent for trying out an opening in a no-pressure environment. I tried out some sicilian prep against it and won.Strangely enough when I hung my rook on a1 for one turn it didn't take it but moved its bishop to b2 instead, hanging the bishop. This is true "humanlike" chess...
>>81315413he and nemo definitely hooked up when they were together in russia

AHHH IM PLAYING BOOLET AHHHH
>>81330207>>81330359You twitch people are pathetic. Equivalent of boomers reading tabloids
>>81325967Yeah just switch to longer time controls and readjust. It takes a couple weeks to get back to the right time/calculation balance. When i switched back to rapid after several months of blitz I over corrected and slowed down too much, got in time trouble in fucking 15 10. Sped up a bit and that sorted it. Back to most comfy time controls being 10 0 and 10 5.
>>81329934I'm a light gray and dark grey man. Do not sully my board with your pigment.
>>81324103You would win the war, duh.
I had to reinstall my operating system and now the sound is not working anymore on chess.com (it only works if I castle or give a check). The sound works on every website or application I tried. Do I have to be a premium member for the full sound experience?
>>81330663>pigmentwait a secondI've a nice Eizo screen where I can adjust several thingsI use a "paper" setup for pretty much everything except works on photosdo you guys ever tried adjust colors/brightness on the screen before/after choosing the colors for the chess board? it can make a huge difference (phones are a different story)also laptops screens are often blueish, maybe you can try adjust those too (I tried in the past with little success)
>>81331081those sounds are expensive man, gotta pay the bills
>>81331268Is Danny the most often posted chess player of this general?
>Make a second account for training new openings>after 100 games, this training account has a higher rating than my main accountUhhh, seems like the presion of my main account was holding me down, i didn't care about the second account and now it has a higher rating
>>81332485ggs to anon
>>81332524There is a rating logjam around the starting number. Just below the starting number will be many people who tanked their rating way down when they started and have since climbed back up. These people can be somewhat underrated as they're competing in a pool full of others in the same situation. Just above the number will be a significant percentage eho have won a few games immediately on sign up but are not good at all. So if you're around 1400 on lichess (rapid) or 1100 chesscom, starting a new account at 1500 and 1200 respectively may be easier competition for about 150 points worth.
>>81317155>There are 3, dude>Morra, Grand prix, AlapinThe king's indian attack, wing gambit, moscow variation, rossolimo variation ...
>>81324012>Have you considered listudy?Damn thanks for the recommendation. Really like it so far
>>81331765He plays chess?
>>81332524I was kind of the same. I was a london only shitter and finally decided to make the switch to e4 and my rating skyrocketed. London really does limit new players. I haven't studied any theory, just know like the first 3-4 moves of the italian and I'm doing so much better.
>>81334591If you get tired of the italian I suggest the scotch. Regular first then the scotch gambit for flavor. It's a great e4 opening.
>>81321721This is why lichess is better than .com you can start a new game while your opponent wastes his time stalling a lost game
>>81334662Yeah I'm definitely thinking of switching to something else eventually. The Italian seems solid and easy to pick up without really studying, but also a bit stale. Maybe I just don't know enough about it though
Yay!! New low centipawn loss record for me. Previous was 9. I think I'm more proud of the 9 though as that was a 35 move game without a massive blunder from opponent. This one the opponent blundered a pin and win on his queen on move 6.
>after work blitz>lose lose lose win win win win winI said I was going to start doing warmup puzzles before I played games. I even wrote it down on a sticky note. Next time I will remember.
>>81288863What does it mean if I'm bad at chess? Like I consider myself pretty intelligent, I'm a systems software engineer but I'm retarded at chess. I'm stuck at like 600 in 5|0.
what is the closest you have seen a commentator accidentally do a swatstica? Is it grounds to cancel them?
>>81336250It means that you're not good at chess. It has zero application outside of this. People incorrectly believe that being good at chess is a sign of intelligence. It is not.
>>81336281Being good at chess is a sign of certain types of intelligence. Mainly pattern recognition and processing speed. I think most modern IQ tests (real ones, not the online things) test for 6-9 different facets of intelligence. So being good at chess does have a positive correlation towards high IQ. But being good at chess does not mean you are smart, and being bad at chess does not mean you are dumb. It just means you are good (or bad) with those specific facets of intelligence. You could have god tier memory, pattern recognition, and processing speed, but be borderline retarded in other facets of intelligence. You would be very good at chess and have a low IQ.If you look at it statistically being good at chess has a slight correlation towards high IQ but it's not significant enough to draw any real conclusions about peoples intelligence just based on how they play.
>>81336250You are too bad to play blitz. You will make little to no progress. 10|0 should be the shortest game you play, I would suggest 10|5 or 15|10.
>>81336250>What does it mean if I'm bad at chess?5|0 is way too fast for a beginner. You don't have the knowledge base yet to play that in a way that isn't near random chance. Chess is not the kind of game where you can put a few months or even a year in and be good by virtue of natural talent. It takes work for everyone. Drilling tactics, endgames, learning theory etc are all steps that can't be skipped to reach whatever your final potential may be.
Should I play and study both e4 and d4 openings as white? I like my King's Pawn games and I'm definitely feeling more and more comfortable navigating those first positions but I wonder if I'm missing out by never playing d4.
i fucking hate shanzi faggots they always get so lucky and theyre also too pussy to accept my rematch hahahahaha
I was following along this video's move order and got every move right on the first sequence, each with some 10 minutes of thinking. I am 800 elo right now on .com but maybe could be higher? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYpiThjJEbo
>>81336553Try out everything and see what you like. Try c4, too. Try b3. Then settle in to whatever kind of game fits best and deep dive on it for a while. For d4 i think the queen's gambit is a good one to experiment with. There is plenty of positional variety, it's not as rote samey structure every time as the london or even the stonewall.
