How do you guys get past the frustration of being bad at painting? I’m new so I can barely paint for shit and I’m not great at selecting proper paints for the job. I know it’s a process of just getting better with practice and time, but finishing one model and getting such shot results is just a bit demoralizing.
>>
>>78996007
Experiment new techniques, get out of your comfort zone.
It probably will look even shittier (see my Trygon above) but at least experimenting is fun, and learning is too.
Don't try to paint an entire army with one paint scheme you repeat ad nauseam, vary it up. Make it interesting. You'll progress faster and not feel as bad.

>>78996007
Stop worrying about closeups for a bit, focus on making it good from arm's length, and work your way down over time

Here's something I'm working on at the moment. Need to brighten the cloak somewhat I think and bring out some more colour somewhere

Washes then highlight and basing will make that a quality skele, dont threat, it takes time. I stick to table top quality as I predominantly do armies so if it looks good at arms length its fine. Tutorials on youtube can help improve, dont be afraid to try new things. also get some cheap miniatures like from 3m4 or ebay to practice.

>Krieg Napoleon
God I wish Krieg wasn't exclusively Forgeworld. I'd love to paint them once I get better.
I think my main problems right now are choosing the correct brush and making sure I don't fuck the brush up too bad while I'm using it, brush control so I'm not Mr. Shakes accidentally hitting places I don't want to, and learning how to really use my paints.
In >>78996007 I used Retributor armor with a layer of Reikland Flesh shade to try for a bronze look, but it came out looking really gold to me.
>>
>>78996063
I actually got the start collecting before it sold out to get some relatively cheap and older minis to learn with. I've been picking up Nighthaunt to paint once I learn the basics.

Getting some paint down on some harlequins again
>>
>>78996100
Don't worry it's not forgeworld, it's 3d printed.
All that will come with time. It sucks to hear but if brush control is the issue it's just a case of practicing, no easy fixes.
If you're shaking you can try pressing your hands together while you hold the model to give you a more stable base
>>
>>78996155
It's not quite as bad as I make it out to be. It's more that I notice the natural shaking of my hands with my pulse when I'm getting in really close and trying to just get a very small spot or crevice without hitting something I just painted. Plus cheap brushes don't hold a tip and they piss me off, but that's what 20 for $5 will get.
>>
>>78995989
By now you will probably have learnt that yellows have terrible coverage. However, still thin your paints, some of them still look a bit thick. Good job though
>>
>>78985066
I like yours too, thanks anon. Aside from some better skill mine definitely needs something to finish it off, I'm not quite happy with it yet.. Will pick some of that up.

Relatively new to this, thoughts/suggestions?

I do have a wash but I haven't used it because it's black and I don't want her To lose her bright colouring. Flock sealed with a 60/40 water/PVA mixture with just a dab of matte varnish.
>>
>>78995860
I am convinced this was originally two separate models they stuck together.

Why is the top eloquently armored while the bottom is nude save for a loincloth? Not even some metal plates on the thighs or arms to bring it together more.
>>
>>78996007
Even bad (as in bad but trying, not memeshit deliberately trying to ruin a model bad) paint jobs look good when the models are fully based and ranked up in units as part of an army. Base them, finish the unit, stick them together and look at them IRL and you'll be much happier
>>
>>78996271
i would use wash on metal atleast, then come back with original colour to highlight, tidy job
>>
>>78996051
Definitely on the to do list once I've finished up cleaning up the line work. Cel shaded yellow is a bitch, make one mistake with a black line and you're dead

You should definitely give it a wash then anon. You will lose some of the color, but then you just go back over with the original bright color and hit all the raised parts and bring it back up to bright.
>>
>>78996671
That sounds very hard, there are like 30 raised parts, and nothing else is highlighted.
>>
>>78996835
wash armour/ metal then target wash the rest like crevices etc? if your worried about trashing model start a new one if unsure how wash will respond, its all a learning curve
>>
>vampire centaur
Derp
>>
>>78996885
It's not a bad concept, but the execution makes it look like a lazy conversion of a vampire lady and bat beast being attached to each other. Why does she wear a fine silken loincloth on her human half, but a ratty rag over her bat cunt? The bat should be armored up and dressed in the same style to make her look like a cohesive creature.
>>
>>78996869
I have washed some stuff before but I've never highlighted. Maybe I should just watch some videos on highlighting. One issue I had was the OP videos are mostly focused on 40k minis which are full of metal and smooth surfaces compared to historicals.
>>
>>78996271
Welcome to the world of miniature painting!
A proper thinned wash for separating areas shouldn't downtone the colors. That would have been a good mini to practice it on. You've taken your first steps, next time try painting your base colors, then do a wash of your black, then add a bit of white to your paints to bring the color up a couple notches and highlight the model.

So, I'm making a new wet palette because I dislike the waste of my current and others. I have a Fitpacker that I used to put food in, a ceramic tile from when I didn't use a wet palette, and I combined them. Crazy, I know. Put some paint on the tile, spritzed it with some water (too much though I think this first time), put the lid on, and now I'm outside doing other things. Going to see how it holds up when I go back in and also overnight. If it does well I'll just make a bigger one. Hopefully it will.

Over half way done with the group. Only bases and writing left unless I decide to touch up some of the legs. Also tried out a different yellow on one of them but it's indistinguishable from the rest. Definitely recommend Vallejo "Filthy Brown" for an earth-tone yellow.

not entirely sold on the flames, anything I could do to improve them?
>>
>>78997477
Without being in the container? Testing. Whilst outside of it? Not long at all. I will report tomorrow and throughout the week with its updates. I'm hoping it lasts quite a while due to being in a sealed container.
>>
>>78997533
Brighter towards the bottom, brighter in the recesses. Start with white. With flames you want to "reverse highlight" sort of, making the recesses brighter and the sharp bits darker.
>>
>>78997533
Maybe some internal lighting on the skulls issuing flame? The white source is a little small there, so the hottest portion would be inside the skull. Maybe also bring down the white on the hand flame, white portions in actual flame are only an inch or so off the burn source.

Play games. When you realize how many people are losing the painting quality war by surrendering and fleeing the field it helps put your shit in perspective. Also, seeing the other tabletop quality jobs by lovable slobs who don't have an instagram and 30k hours of practice does the same.
When you have the chance, a hobbying hangout is a lot of fun. Throw up a Zoom call or chill on the back porch and paint with a buddy. Shit goes way faster and more comfortably compared to listening to some prat on YT ramble in 10:07 chunks to his tiered-subscription audience. Helps keep you honest.

Got a retarded question.
How would you go about modifying generic toy soldiers into medieval metal statues for terrain?

I have those in pic related. I'm trying to mod the one on the top left into a generic-looking bronze statue for a tower. Cutting away the little plastic pistol and pouches and stuff is easy, and after putting on some metallic paint I think it'll look okay-ish. I will also try to make a little spear for them to hold and maybe a small round shield. But what else could I do to sell the effect? Maybe try to do some kind of texture, like it's weathered and damaged so the modern-looking clothes will be hidden? How?

Nowadays, I paint during our zoom D&D games, and I also just hangout with friends on Discord while they play video games and I paint.

I did a few cultists with green but I really didn't like it at a glance. I kept them anyways just to have some variety in the crowd though. Almost tempted to just do a full orange body and leave purple on the left arm, then switch to a white cloth. That'd be pretty minimal repainting but I'm not sure if I'd want orange to be my primary army color. Maybe use the purple to signify rank, like two purple arms for sergeant equivalents and a more heavy purple style for other elites?
I don't know why the fuck I'm so undecisive on this

By knowing that by painting them you'll always infinitely be better than those that play with unpainted models. Also you do tend to get better the more you paint while the quality may not go up that much you'll at least get used to it and be able to do it much faster. Also looking at loads of videos and stuff and practicing with different technics will help.

Might help if you took a picture with the model on a surface (not held) and from further away. The orange part of yours isn't bad. It looks pretty smooth and complements the metal trim well. The white feels unfinished in comparison because I don't think you got as consistent coverage and the eye wants to compare the white sections to the orange in context with the trim and this makes the white parts look unfinished. Would also help to apply some highlights and shading to the model. Bolter, backpack, and legs look very flat.

Well that sucks. You still got options though. You do anything you want with the white for one and iirc, you had blue in one of the earlier mockups. Painting blue over purple works nice as shade, so you can still try that. Or push the orange a bit more until you arrive at yellow.

Finally painted up the pilot for my evil knight, sadly my results in recasting the hatch in clear resin haven't been too great, as it just obscures way too much and the rim is quite distracting. I used UV resin for this piece, maybe epoxy would turn out better? I don't really like the default open hatch option, and am unsure how to make a destroyed one look good.
I have to paint the pilot first, because I need the carapace attached to the chassis to build the knight as I want him.

How much would it cost to commission a stencil for primaris shoulder pads?
It would take something like a laser printer, right? Some of the filigree gets really tiny. But it's also on a curved surface, is it possible at all?

Would tan w/ black joints be too boring?
Giving the brass an aged/oxidized look might add some visual interest if it is.

Good point. Good lean into the brass and use it to color all of the plates with tan for the joints and maybe black for the lenses/vox grill?

No the oxidizing thing is what I was aiming for. Like these are marines that spend most of their active combat time on the sea floor. What about weathering their armor with a patinaed look?
Maybe they're one of those chapters like the Fists Exemplar which just let their armor take on natural colors?
It could end up giving each model some unique asymmetry since the weathering patterns will all look slightly different and you can leave the imperialis symbol in clean brass along with the edges of the shoulder pad?
>>
>>79013459
I considered that too. I'm just afraid that might make it look too degraded and in turn make them look like a chaos warband instead of an imperial chapter. Nurgle is big on decay.
>>
>>79013488
Good point. Turquoise shoulder pads and maybe knee pads might look good and compliment the brass. If you could give it some kind of scale pattern it might really emphasize the viper aspect.

Anyone got some good pointers for painting sick, inflamed and/or necrotic flesh?
Whenever I try to do it the result is usually quite lackluster as you can see from my most recent model.
>>
>>79013625
google image search some reference pictures. Depending on what you are going for you could look for horror movie makeup or actual injuries and corpses. Be prepared to see some stuff that may be hard to look at if you are sensitive to that sort of thing. But good references to work from is usually the answer to most art related questions.

I assume the grey/black parts are supposed to be the necrotic flesh? You're gonna get better results if you paint it flesh colored first and then use red/purple transitions. Inflammations and such could be painted by painting mottled red glazes. If you do the whole limb uniform the effect loses a bit because you don't see the contrast of healthy and sick flesh next to each other.

I've done something similar with old broken models I got in a bits bucket sale at the LGS. Towards the center of pic related.
Base is a coke bottle lid filled with lead shot and plaster, then glued to a fender washer.
Prime black, overbrush with bronze, ink with turquoise, then drybrush slowly with burnt umber until it gets the tone you want, Go back over any polished areas with bronze, and sloppily ink with thinned white to get "coffee-stained" blotches of bird shit. I'm using turfing as the moss, on top of splashes of brown/olive/hunter green and then inking the whole thing with brown and a drybrush of green. I picked out any gilded bits with a heavy overbrush of gold and then inked them with blue-black to give a better contrast to the warmer tones of the bronze.

It's airbrushed Vallejo German Uniform with a Vallejo Lime Green zenithal, then a Vallejo Green Grey on the extreme apical structures. Edge highlights with Green Grey , then a wash with GW Coelia Greenshade contrast paint diluted ~1:4 with contrast medium.

For extra fanciness I hit it with Vallejo USA Olive Drab from below in the murkiest areas. It sounds unnecessarily complex, but with an airbrush it all goes pretty fast.

To add to this I am trying to figure out how I want to do the glove leather. I don't want it to look the same as the purple-grey that I used on part of the armor. I was thinking either going for a black with blueish highlights or going for a dark red brown with more red brown highlights. Not sure if I need more contrast on rider's body or if I should just keep it tied together with red and have the zombie dragon act as more of a contrast.

Looks pretty fucking rad. This is why the idea of Kill Team, regardless of rule execution, appeals to me so much. You get to justify spending a ton of extra time on a small squad and get to paint them with the care you would single models. Just isn't feasible when you have 80 guys to paint just for troops.
>>
>>79017016
that is exactly what has also brought me to Killteam. I must have already painted 120ish marines and cant stand it anymore

Uhhhhhhh Terradon Turquoise contrast. I did black primer, Leadbelcher (or equivalent dark metal) heavy drybrush/overbrush then a lighter silver highlight drybrush, then some Tamiya black panel liner on the panel circumferences/recesses then the turquoise

I've been on the fence about ordering from madrobot for a long time, thier pictures don't really convey how well their sculpts look on a model and painted. After seeing this I'll probably just go with anvil. Looking okay though. I'd thin your paints a bit more.

What are yall planning?

I'm going to be building some Battle Sisters cavalry for 40k. Taking the Dawnriders from Lumineth for the horse. The leg armor is almost identical to a Sister, so I'll only need to do a replacement from the waist up. I'll be giving them the Dawnriders' lances. All this is to make a proxy for the Paragon Warsuits. While I don't hate them, I feel like these will be more fun.

Only issue is I haven't got any good solutions for where the shooting weapons go.

Thank you. It's been almost 4 months since I started and I haven't finished the marine half of Indomitus. I feel like I spend too much time on little details and get burnt out for a few days at a time. I have had a lot of fun painting though.
>>
>>79017546
if you're talking about edge highlighting specifically i know duncan says when doing a stage of a model to finish that stage before cleaning up or fixing mistakes because it's too easy to get hung up on them. Also your situation could be much worse, I started 40k back in the 7th edition dark vengeance box and still haven't finished a unit yet, although i'm planning on fixing that soon

I think it's more all the small pieces of detail on the models that I try so hard to paint neatly. I recently bought the dark angels patrol box because I wanted the dreadnought. It's hard to resist buying more minis before I even finish the ones I have.

Making slow but steady progress kitbashing more Deathwatch Veterans. From left to right: A Storm Warden with a Claymore, (Suggest your custom chapter here) guy with storm shield and power maul, a Loyalist Brazen Bull with power sword an storm shield, a Lucky Clover with power fist, aDeathwatch Librarian with force glaive, and a Thatamurge Sergeant with thunder hammer. The idea is to have a close-combat kill team or two jump out of a Corvus Blackstar and BONK things while other Kill teams move up with storm shields, special issue ammo, and supporting fire from Intercessors. More of a casual kitbash-heavy army for me since I want to get better at freehanding chapter symbols.

I'm getting burnt out trying to achieve perfection and it's not working. I don't even know why I'm doing it. Trying to paint in styles I don't like or trying to be more artistic when it simply doesn't translate well to miniatures or the 28mm scale. If I want to do that why not just take up painting on canvas? I'm disappointing myself. I'm trying to do things the hard way. I'm not in art school anymore. No one cares if I use flesh tones. They're miniatures, for God's sake. They're not portraits. They're game pieces. I'm complicating things. I just need to get things done. That's one of my problems. I become dissatisfied with my experiments and into the Simple Green it goes. Nothing ever really completed. Just an eternal WIP that I'll never be happy with because I keep trying to do things a stupid way, and a hard way. It doesn't have to be that way either.

I make a vow, /WIP/. An oath. I will stop complicating things. I will complete things. I think it'll help my motivation when I see completed projects. It doesn't have to be perfect it just has to be done.
>>
>>79018920

Vallejo game air silver as a base. Seraphim sepia, then violet mixed with glaze medium, then a dark blue with glaze medium.
>>
>>79018970
I really need to just tone it down for miniature painting. Like I said, if I'm going to do "advanced" stuff I'll just paint on canvas. 2D and 3D are very, very different. It's just time I realise that. I'm holding myself back. No longer, though.
>>
>>79019032
i wouldn't worry too much about it since you're doing BT, you just have to throw some black onto any spilled areas when you're done without worrying about having to reapply shades to the armor

Multidirectional lighting sounds like the priority. Try my light box, pic relate because 4chan doesn't like amazon links. In the middle of the light ring there's a hatch of sorts you can open up/cut off and stick a camera into, taking a pic from up above with a ring light lighting it from all directions

Honestly I don't know If I'm makin a mistake but I found the 75 metallics thick and the regular paints lacked decent coverage compared to Vallejo.

Meh, ended up going more blue-grey on gloves. Idk how I feel about it but I'm moving forward. I did do that but I guess I need to dilute the washes since it got very purple so I kinda panicked and threw some nuln oil on it.

Short answer is "all over wash". The longer answer is that I did an all-over wash on my infantry which works fine, but the larger fields on the hovertank caused pooling so it dried messily, so now I'm trying to be more mindful of applying washes in segments on larger models. So not quite a pin wash, I guess?

Pardon the awful paint job, I'm still learning, but I have a color scheme question.

For flavor reasons my Breacher Squads have black helmets, however the cloth of my sept for my Tau is also black. What color should I paint the underhelmet cloth? If I go with black also i feel it will overlap. Off black like Corvus Black maybe?

Brush in one direction for drybrushing, stroke down lightly but quickly in the direction the light will be coming in. Make sure the brush is throroughly loaded but properly light on pigment. Don't be afraid to do a seocond pass in 5-10 minutes when shit dries.
