Both. Synthwave is a fad, it's already slowing down and it'll be just as dead in the mainstream as Orteza's ultra-gribbled micro highlight style in a few months. On the other hand it's still a very striking and technically-challenging way of painting, so it'll hang on among the folks who like it.

Asking for second opinion after asking /m/ before, if it is something that shouldn't be ask here just say so.

I plan to customize certain model kit of animuu girl (~13cm in size) by adding movable wings - but she have only one 3mm hole, located low (because hair would get in the way). How viable is suggested solution (pic related) of placing two polycaps like this and using them as mounting points for two joints, serving as wings (bottom white part)? Should fit if I use thin polystyrene plates. One of the risks is to have wings themselves too heavy for that kind of mount, even if I would make them from thin (0,5-1mm) polystyrene pieces.

What's your opinion on that? Thanks for any reply.
>>
>>78553351
>slapping stupid ass wings onto everything
You are part of the problem. But for real, I'd cut the holes, position the polycaps using polystyrene plates, super glue it all in, then fill and round out the gaps and low spots with something like Milliput. If you're worried about joint strength then I'd super glue the polys in solid then redesign the wings to make up for the lost articulation, or just try to keep the wings light
Also this isn't really the place for it, even though I know for sure there's a bunch of overlap with the /m/ and /toy/ gunpla generals here

>You are part of the problem

;_;

I just wanted to make it looks cool...

To be honest, I wanted to avoid permanent modifications that's why I asked about using existing hole but if you say that it won't work, I will have to think it over. There is also option of mounting wings on elbow 3mm points but it could get in the way and look a bit silly. Maybe. As for asking here - it's just that you guys are pretty experienced with modification and customization, I don't really want to cause trouble however. Thanks.

No you're fine, like I said there's a lot of modeling overlap between minis and gunpla. I'm just judging your shit taste
People like you tend to drift through occasionally. We just help you out and point you to where the appropriate general is. Gunpla or weeb models in general have generals on /m/ and /toy/ and scale model tanks also have a general on /toy/ iirc. I used to be really big into gunpla so I like problem solving like these kind of mods
I should paint this one day
Also have you considered a T-cross bar thing to plug into the single hole that has two holes on either end to attach wings? Wouldn't have to cut anything on the model

I usually have no taste at all and my previous customization attempt was pretty bland but if I wont fuck up, I wont progress. Maybe one day. As for generals - like I said, it was second opinion - out of general threads, /m/ plamo one have people playing with customizing but /toy/ rarely do (it also have general for plastic girls kits but they do almost no customization aside from painting) and tanks and rest would probably suggest asking on mecha threads anyway.

Aside from that, your comment about T-cross bar made me realize that I overlooked much easier solution in both existing mount for "funnels" she have (just wanted to make it more closer to body instead of "floating") and spare part from kit itself (placed at the end of transparent plastic on pic). I really tend to overcomplicate things. Now I feel a bit stupid.

Yes, very common. Part of it can be mitigated by taking better pictures (diffused light, using macro), and part of it is just because the camera works differently than your eyes. A pretty easy way to get decent pictures (I've found) is to take pictures outside.

This guy's fucking awesome. One of the best khorne dude conversions I've seen.

I got the Cursed City box set and it's badass. Gonna be my gateway into a Soulblight army. I want to paint my Skeletons like this. Anyone have any suggestions on what to do? I'll experiment a little later but I'm almost thinking of an orange spray, a bit of red glazing and some bright orange highlights. Maybe some black speckling to show burnt-ness.
Also, anyone good cobblestone/city base guides?

At the beginning I felt like that. As I got more experience I lessened the amount of maintenance I did so that now I only take it apart when something is actually wrong.

As for switching paint, I usually just put water in the cup, backflow by spraying with my finger blocking the tip, dump, spray excess - repeat that 3 times every color change and only use cleaner at the very end when I wipe out the cup.

then use "fit to screen" option and only zoom in if you wanna look at all detail work or mistakes. the whole point of the WIP thread is show what you're working on and gettin' feedback and while hi-rez pics may not be the best for "showcasing" they are best for getting feedback cause people can see every little detail of your mini in all its glory or embarrassment. even an artist himself can benefit from a hi rez photo of his work because hes going to see things even he couldnt typically see. if you dont wanna see hi-rez mages, just look at the file size and resolution info that accompanies every fucking picture posted here before opening it and then whinging about it lol. jfc

How do I properly cut 3mm polystyrene sheet? First I tried using scribing knife (or how it's properly called, the one with claw like blade), went smooth into around 1/3 deep but breaking it resulted in completely uneven side. I tried scissors for metal but they break it into pieces instead. I tried saw for metal and it cut very rough, I tried that thin saw for wood but it broke.

One of the reasons to get 3mm was to avoid having to glue together 1mm and 1,5mm sheets over and over but cutting it turned harder than I expected. I might be dumb here but please help.

The second dunecrawler is gonna look like a cobbled monstrosity. I had some fun head fluff where the cultists wanted a vehicle for their own troops so they made this abomination out of scavenged parts. The machine spirit/deamon residue gave the machine a life of its own and indebted itself to the cultists for letting it continue to kill. Dark priest in this sector is confused and intrigued that mere humans managed to do this without dying horrible deaths.
>>
>>78572612

But in this case, if I break it with that much uneven surface, I have little control over precision in size. And waste lots of material.

I get about 100 likes per mini but one mini I posted randomly got 1600 likes. It depends on who likes who and if you get put on the trending page.
Realistically, if you want a lot of likes/follows, you have to do the 'follow for follow' shit, and aggressively just start following anyone and everyone that paints.
And even then, no one is really looking at your dudes. They're just scrolling and smashing like and scrolling.

Bought a box of Ork Nobz a while ago wanting to figure out a way to paint something weird, need some advice

I want to paint them inspired by scallies / chavs / north face kids, and call them the 'Ladz'. idk how to do this though without just doing them black and them ending up looking like goffz. I thought maybe I could do them in grey tones and pick out little details with a neon green, like a pair of Nike 110s (a favourite of lads about Liverpool where I'm at).

Anyone got any better suggestions?
>>

I have 3k~ followers. It doesnt matter. It's fake internet numbers. I'm mostly pissed the banned me from adding music to my stories for when I post shit I painted since I used too many songs/copyrights. I like to finish projects and post on dakka and social media but you don't want to do a "FOLLOW ME SHOOTOUT TO GAMER GIRL PAINTING OMG ING28 TRANS DAY". Like cool picture or models you like. Most of it I just screenshot or use the save function to save inspiration photos. Most of my inspiration comes from other people's shit they post.

Well you could go the full chav route and have them all in grey and blue. Maybe little logos, adidas stripes etc. Would be cool if the colours were not uniform as they would look more like a gang or rabble. Maybe even have one on a moped with an orange grot on the back. Or you could go the Ork FC route and make them full on football hooligans with football shirts etc

I would look for something easy to recognize from what you're inspired by. The puffy jacket on the right could be sculpted around the arms. Leaving off shoulder pads on Nobz gives you a lot more room to work. With Orks I look at the face a lot, because it is rather central to the model. If you could find a way to sculpt hats that fit your inspiration, it will go a long way.

Newbie questions. I'm painting board game pieces that will be handled a lot.

1) Instead of washing in soap + water, does a dunk in Isopropyl also clean off oils before painting?

2) Does Matt Varnish work as a transparent primer coat if I want to work off the plastic's base color?

3) Is there a difference between generic varnish and Miniatures varnish, like how generic acrylic paints vs miniatures acrylics are formulated differently? Or can I buy a big bottle of generic varnish no problems?

Found a really fast but effective way to paint tarnished iron. Can I get some proper feedback on this? The primer went on thick but that's not important. It's about the worn metal effect achieved. I'm torn between it looking really good and looking amateurish. There's probably ways to make it pop more I can experiment with after I've got feedback. I plan to use it on an orc or demon army.

>Thanks m8! I actually lost the drill bit that was the perfect size for their shootas. Need to pick up a new one to complete the lads as well as finish basing them.
Buy the mini-drill pack from Harbor Freight. Costs like $5 and it has dozens of cheap carbon steel bits.

>>78572093
XPS sheeting is notoriously fucky and hard on blades. You've got three options.
1) Use a hotwire table, which is precise but horribly expensive. It also releases toxic fumes.
2) Cut everything 1mm oversize and then sand it down. Laborious, messy, but simple.
3) Get a halfway decent kitchen knife, one of the ~10", $20-30 range ones in carbon steel, and then properly sharpen it. It will get long, clean, straight slices in styrene foam, but you're going to need to maintain it and not use it on bone and wire and shit like a 'tard. And also slice, not chop.
>>
>>78577672
you can
>>
>>78569128
Brown stuff dries a lot harder and more brittle than green stuff. So you don't really want to use it for anything that is unsupported. Had some feathers made of brown stuff snap off. It does sand and shave down better than green stuff so it's way more useful for making sharp edges and armor plates. I used it pretty interchangeably on these guys because I was experimenting with it.

You can also mix green stuff and brown stuff and get a putty with properties in the middle of the two.

Such incredible lack of reading comprehension and knowledge of his topic in one Anon.
John Blache limited himself to a palette without greens and blues, Blanchitsu, which emulates Blanches painting style, does too. I don't even know why you're suddenly talking about Aquarells.
>>
>>78576468
>1) Instead of washing in soap + water, does a dunk in Isopropyl also clean off oils before painting?
If the oil isn't cured yet, it'll get most of it off. The alcohol tends to have issues getting past the surface of fully-cured oils IME.

>2) Does Matt Varnish work as a transparent primer coat if I want to work off the plastic's base color?
I've had some luck with it on clear Bones minis. It's also worked for me with stuff like toy cars, but I always prime my plamo so I haven't tested it with them yet.

>3) Is there a difference between generic varnish and Miniatures varnish, like how generic acrylic paints vs miniatures acrylics are formulated differently? Or can I buy a big bottle of generic varnish no problems?
There are slight differences in formulation between brands. That said, a lot of the hobby products are literally produced on the same machines, in the same factory, with slightly different labels, as the mass-market shit. For example, Testor's Dullcote (RIP) is 100% identical to Rust-Oleum Dead Flat.
I prefer to use either Dead Flat or Tamiya Mr. Super Clear -- neither has ever gone foggy on me with proper shaking, even in shitty weather. Dead Flat has a slightly more "lively" finish, while the Tamiya kills blends a bit but gets an ultramatte surface. Just remember to mask clear parts before you spray, or it will fog the shit out of them.
For metals and gloss, I hand-paint on the varnish. Usually use Vallejo or Utrecht products because of the price and reliability. On things that need to stay clear, especially if it's got scratches or light fogging, I use Pledge Clear Floor Gloss (ex-Future Clear) and a dust cover. Takes about a day to cure fully but the results are absolutely worth it

Good work so far. One thing that needs work is the hair on the shaded side of her face. It all needs to be brought way down. You have her face going to almost black but the hair next to it is painted almost in sunlight. The ear closer to the face also needs to be brought down.
