I have a mild and impersonal contempt for tieflings, because there's no sense of flexibility with them. 1. You're a misunderstood "looks evil but is actually good" tiefling2. You're actually an evil tiefling. That's it, that's the entirety of your character options. You have zero other options. With elves, you don't have to be a drow to be evil. You can be an evil elf. You could be a good elf. You could be a compassionate elf. You could be an arrogant elf. You could be a chuunibyou elf that acts like an evil dragon is sealed in their right eye. You could be a paragon of virtue and nobility paladin elf. This applies to just about all the other core races. You can be whatever you want to be and the rest of the world will be more or less a-ok with how you act. tieflings seem targeted especially towards the mildly retarded edgelord market.

I've seen a number of solutions to the problem, but the fact remains that it's a unique issue that only really exists because one of your players decided to be a literal divine being. Tiefling are easy, you just have everyone be distrustful of them because they're demonspawn. That's probably what your player wants to, can't be a misunderstood outcast if you're not an outcast.

When they were retooled and made a core race in 4e because WotC wanted the WoW audience. But they were already imagined as "dark misunderstood turds boo hoo hoo" in 3e by a large subsection of players because the 2000's were a time where everyone wanted to be both edgy and victimized. I guess they still do, but now the edgy part is written in fine print.
