>>77673432Maybe, I guess, if they're not trying to make it weird or anything. As for more platonic or professional relationships I can see it becoming more often considering how Kobolds operate as they can make for good squires, servants, and other positions where receiving orders and carrying them out revolve around the job.>>77674087How did it turn out?>>77674159>>77676431I know Munchkin's Kobolds us a thing but they're not Draconic or Lizardbolds, I hear it rarely discussed.>>77676513That thread is about to hit image limit and we could still have some discussion there, but I do think opening this thread is a bit too soon.
>>77673354Are Kobolds just scaly goblins?
>>77676805There's plenty of things putting Kobolds and Goblins apart from each other though I'm not too well informed on Goblin lore in D&D. What I know about Kobolds basically is that they love to work, value the tribe over individual ambition, worship Dragons, are great miners, set up traps, and have a special meditation ritual referred to as "Searching for the Dragon".
>>77676805That's why Kobolds should be retconned into velociraptors, super clever wild animals but still wild animals
>>77676875And fucking hate gnomes!Fuck all gnome fucking shits!Praise Based kurtulmak
>>77676913Are they intelligent or would they just be animals?>>77676925 #True I missed that, although I think it's because I'm still not sure how I'd fit Gnomes into my setting. As far as the Kobolds go they're still working for and are related to Dragons but have a bit of differentiation between the "tribes" sort of like how there's three kind of Hobbits in Tolkien's work.

>>77681232>was Dwarf considered a class in older editions? In the oldest editions races were not separate from classes. Elf and Dwarf were their own racial classes. Of course things have changed significantly since then
>>77681214I always assumed it would be on account of their size that they wouldn't take up an occupation as a ranger, but I'm the one going to put frontierskobolds in my setting so I'm not exactly one to talk.
>>77681308Just making sure, I'm in-between two OD&D games currently so I wasn't sure if I was misremebering or not.
>>77681147I like 5 personally.
>>77681016How it turn out?
>>77681706Well it's a long story involving a horrible dick of character, and redemption. I literally was trying to be a mother fucker who was unlikable in every sense of the word. I made the local black Kobold tribe indentured servants to help rebuild the town. These kobolds were refugees. One among them was a valiant paladin. She eventually led them away from our town and fought me in order to have revenge. My character realized he was a tool for that, and apologized despite how he could have killed her easy. Eventually she kinda stuck around and for some reason saw something in my character. But my guy was still a bastard, angry and easily gave into bloodlust. Eventually during a fight with a revenant(one that exists because of my character.) My pc was chopping undead left and right and eventually in all the carnage she fell before him and he cut all the same, nearly cleaving her in two before realizing what he had done and dropping to his knees. The cleric saved her, but she left the party after that. My PC kept spiraling down into his self destructive path, the blood in his veins boiling. Eventually they crossed paths with her again on a bridge some 300 feet above a raging river, and my PC begged her not to force him to fight her. They fought and my PC had a chance to not attack, but rose his sword and ran her through, all the while my PC smiling because he's too far gone now in his bloodlust and just wanted to kill at that point. She smiled before pulling my PC with her and plunging them both off the bridge into the river below. They disappeared for half a year's worth of sessions before it was revealed that they went to the Dragon Isles in the east. She and a local dragon took him there at the risk of her own life so my PC could save himself. Turned out he had dragon blood and never knew it. The dragon elders whipped the ever living shit out of him and forced him into submission, treating him like a stubborn hatchling that should be taught properly. Cont.
>>77682114>>77681706Every day he was viciously beaten by thr temple custodians, towering dragonbornes. He was beaten in the morning and evening, but was made stronger as a result. He learned the language of Dragons, he trained to improve his swordsmanship, and he found out the truth about his lineage. His final trial was to conquer his own wrath, traveling deep in a cave, he encountered the mirror image of himself burning in unholy fire and rage. He fought this image of himself for days, it was the hardest thing he had ever done and nearly died doing it. Afterwards, his bloodlust was gone, vanquished and destroyed, and now he preserves the Draconic line, also married the Kobold. He really doesn't deserve her.
>>77682114>>77682233Huh, I wasn't expecting all that, this bit did niggle me for a moment.>black Kobold tribe... One among them was a valiant paladin...But I've only played OD&D so I don't know what they're doing with Paladins nowadays. I honestly expecting whole story, are you still doing the game or did you guys end it?
>>77682311It's still ongoing. If anything happens to Wiki, I'll go full Doomguy.
>>77676783>Munchkin's KoboldsWhat's that?
Speaking of dwarves. How would they interact and thinking about kobolds assuming that the later are normal civilized race in the setting instead of monster race? Especial since I think both races tend to inhabit mountains regions. Maybe tinkering abilities of kobolds help them get jobs and positions in dwarven society. Or maybe dwarves just enslave kobolds and force them to work in mines.
>>77683326Competition over the same resources would lead to pretty frequent conflicts. Dwarves have superior strength and technology, so would likely win almost every head-on conflict. The ones they lose, though, would get put in the grudge book and be seethed over for the rest of eternity. It'd probably take a pretty powerful common enemy to get dwarves and kobolds working together, but if they ever did they could REALLY get some shit done
>>77683326It depends on the hold/clan.
>>77683326I actually asked this same question in the previous thread:>>77654234I'll give you my own thoughts in a minute though.
>>77683326>How would they interact and thinking about kobolds assuming that the later are normal civilized race in the setting instead of monster race? They would get along like Russians and Finnish. For the sake of this comparison, imagine the Dwarves as the Russians, Kobolds as Finnish, and the year is 1939
>>77683434>>77683443I like the idea of dwarven army being overall stronger, but kobolds having an edge over dwarves thanks to their guerrilla tactics.
>>77683326>Especial since I think both races tend to inhabit mountains regions. In the case of my setting the Dorfs inhabit pretty much all the mountain regions within the realm of men where they hold a monopoly over the resources they sell to those down off the mountains. The Kobolds inhabit the mountains and lands that are under the rulership of the *Draconic country, they work exclusively for the Dragons mining and crafting glittering treasures. The Dwarf merchants are worried about what would happen if a Dragon wised up and decided to open trade up with the men and there's the Dorfs religion which more or less teaches the mountains were a gift from god/the gods when they were created; The Kobolds are civilized and don't worry too much about matters outside the Draconic country.>Maybe tinkering abilities of kobolds help them get jobs and positions in dwarven society. Or maybe dwarves just enslave kobolds and force them to work in mines. This is more or less what I'm thinking is going to happen when I put everyone against the Orcs, not Dorfs will enslave Kobolds, but relations will warm and cooperation might start occurring. In that setting I mentioned >>77680610 the premise is pretty much Arx Fatalis but a Dwarf hold with a Kobold, Hobbit, and **maybe Gnome population decide to build a Nostromo type space station and go find a new home to colonize.Ultimately the Dorfs and Kobolds will butt heads on account of living in the same space and Dorfs often being in conflict with Dragons. I do think there are desirable aspects a Dwarf would find in a Kobold like their love of work but there would be more things to disagree over between themselves.*Haven't come up with a proper name yet and the problem stems from how their government is supposed to operate.**Still not sold on Gnomes and I've even given thought to just having them part of the same race as the Dwarfs as just a tribe or class.

>>77684322Not that anon but maybe subtle differences you wouldn't catch from looking down on kobolds as a taller creature, meaning kobolds all look the same from above. Dwarves being around the same height as kobolds have caught on to the differences much easier.
>>77684322The Kobolds can probably smell the difference between male and female dwarves.
>>77683326I had this weird thought that maybe kobolds are more pleasant in touch for dwarves than gnomes and halflings , because their scales make their skin feel rugged and hard instead of soft and delicate, and that's what dwarves prefer.

>>77686086>>77686250One of the "Kobolds" in my setting will be Draconic and will of course be serving the Dragons, I had two variations considered but I've decided to include physical differentiation between tribes as well. I had considerations about including Ratfolk and Dogfolk before having only recently learned about "Ratbolds" and "Dogbolds", the Dogfolk were intended to be related to potential Wolfolk with references to our taming of real dogs. I had no intentions of having any equivalent to the first edition "Kobolds" but that might change, I haven't decided. The traditional Kobold from Germanic myth would probably go the way of the Gnome if I'm not persuaded otherwise, rolled up with Dwarfs into a single people.I hadn't any of intentions of originally making space for any other kind of "Kobolds", but seeing the quibbles about have certainly motivated me to avoid the potential issue.

>>77689099Thing is, they'd struggle to bring most of those to bear inside cramped kobold territory. Kobolds are even smaller than skaven, and much better at using traps defensively.Of course, that only counts on their home turf. They'd fail miserably at any kind of offensive push.

>>77688466Hey, I know that picture
>>77693903I love this picture because the Kobold looks fantastically killy, but his armor is made of pans and shovels and other scrap metal.
>>77681345Designs look kino. I am running a Kobolt only campaign as a series of OSR/heavy homebrew one shots. I restricted classes to Fighter/Ranger (one and the same with custom abilities to separate them, think maneuvers in 5e), Dragon Cleric (again custom), Thief and Warlock with Dragon patron. I play the in game Dragon that gives the party quest and when they die and they do so often they roll randomly their stats and class. One rule is you must do a silly unique voice for every character. We are at fifth session and is absolutely pure joy to play a more slapstick game once and a while.
How come kobolds are such a popular meme race but other scalies like lizardfolk and dragonborn are not?Is it because kobolds are midgets?
>>77698543Deekin, Pun Pun, underdog appeal of being a level 1 trash monster while simultaneously having power gamer appeal due to 3.x splatbooks, pathfinder splatbooks, and in 5e Pack Tactics. If it was just the scales, those two would be infinitely more popular.
>>77693841You know, you look obsessed when your first reaction to the idea is "what would trans person do?". Like, who cares, do you really will stop yourself from using cool shit just because some potential faggot might get offended or ruin it?
>>77699260My boyfriend is trans, so it tends to be on my mind. So I guess I'm obsessed? My primary thinking with the idea was that my BF would want to play a trans Kobold or Dwarf character and it has the potential to be cool, but there's also a ton of trans people that are majorly out there and prone to exploding over tiny and stupid shit. I've been friends with enough trans people to notice it, they can't just be like "that's cool" they have to put their identity into it. Even my boyfriend has trouble distancing himself from his characters, I love him and his characters, but there's always a large amount of him at the core, whether the character is trans or not.
>>77699392So what, do we really need to tiptoes around them like children just because they can't behave like grown-up people?
>>77697515The ones I've been playing with I know are related to one of the generals, but I might have been just overreacting I guess. >>77699605No, but if a person is your friend you won't want to cause them discomfort or "trigger" them unnecessarily. If you enjoy most of the time you spend with someone, but certain topics turn them into a raving asshole, you will tend towards avoiding said topics yeah? Now put yourself in a GMs shoes, you've invited 4 of your friends to the table, you're writing your campaign and want to put a drow section in, but oh no! Jeff is majorly arachnophobic. Wouldn't you just change that part rather than causing issues?Ultimately, people make concessions for other people all the time, it's only when said concessions start causing YOU grief that it should really matter.
>>77699392>whether the character is trans or notWhy play a trans character? Why not just play a character that is the sex they want to be?
>>77699879To explore ideas with it. My boyfriend has (yet) to play a trans character and tends towards playing males, even before they transitioned, but he intends to play one in an upcoming campaign. Some things give flavor and depth to a character, if done correctly and not just as a label that is. Gregor the ranger could be a little more interesting if it turns out he was born Georgia the milkmaid and he cut his tits off so he could use a bow better. I've played a trans character before, even though I'm not trans and I've also played characters that were just self inserts. You make enough characters, you'll tend to overlap on your own traits a lot.
>>77673587I once played as a Kobold spellcaster who constantly claimed he was a "half dragon" (it was true, but nobody believed him to the point where people thought his wings were fake). He always kept talking about his wife, who he said was a Dragon. People just laughed at that, as well as the half-dragon thing, because he was maximum silly, and it was impossible to take him seriously because I made his voice very "cute", even though he was trying to become this all-powerful wizard.Way, way, WAY down the line, this Kobold eventually shows up as an NPC after retirement. Some of the party members were looking for a Dragon and ended up coming across their lair, and the first thing that greeted them was the Kobold. Turns out his wife actually was a fully grown dragon. He had a clutch of children to his name as well. Probably the best ending to any character I've ever had, desu.
>>77681147I like 5, but sometimes 4 a GMPC, especially if we are missing a niche.I don't like having to force a party to create themselves pre-rounded out. If the party happens to not role a cleric because nobody wanted to play one, they should be allowed to recruit one into their ranks.
>>77700066(nayrt, but) That does sound like a neat idea. For Gregor, there, would the idea be that he was fine without top surgery until he was like "wait, shit, bows are rad and my tits are actually annoying now"?I've also heard some people play trans characters so they have a (secondary) character arc of trying to find a way to change their body; just because it's in a magic setting where polymorph spells exist doesn't mean those spells are easy to access.

What happens if a kobold tries to use a regular-sized crossbow? AFAIK crossbows tend to get drawn to roughly waist-height, which is close to a kobold's full height.
>>77703130they have a kobold buddy to hold the crossbow in place while they draw it
>>77703130I would think it would take longer for the Kobold to reload the crossbow if it's the same height but I just remembered someone mentioned that would be the advantage a Dwarf would have if he used a crossbow, although the Dwarf would the required strength to use it more effectively during reload time.
>>77699835>Wouldn't you just change that part rather than causing issues? No, the story shouldn't suffer just because one person might not be ok with some of its elements. Especial since said person can just deal with it.
>>77703044Yep
Koboldunism.>>77703313Oh, a winch-assisted reload, that's clever! And very fitting to the "semi-primitive tinkering" style of kobold.>someone mentioned that would be the advantage a Dwarf would have if he used a crossbowI don't see how that would be turned into an advantage, unless it's just that their strength advantage mitigates the height penalty. fucking manlets when will they learnAlternatively, species who live in small, dar, narrow tunnels probably can't rely on slower, arcing ranged weapons like spears, so crossbows would be more common and more widely practiced among the underground folk.>>77703403It does depend on the severity of the discomfort. It's generally bad form to give your friends panic attacks.Like, if you were friends with someone who thinks every nonhuman species is "freakshit," it'd be pretty shitty of you to send the party to not!Zootopia just because you want to play some furry NPCs.All that said, of course, it looks like this whole thing started because one anon was worried that their trans friends MIGHT get upset at the inclusion of a trans NPC. This has the simplest solution on the face of the planet: >just fucking ask them>literally just approach the friend you think might have beef with your idea and ask them if it would ruin the game for themChances are pretty good that your friend isn't going to fucking face-heel-turn and suddenly decry you as Hitler 2: Hitl Harder because you had a potentially mildly controversial idea and sought help before implementing it.
>>77703783https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMoL_SBD6gwIf they are mostly going to be using them to defend static points (castles and caves), the weight becomes less of an issue.
>>77703783>Koboldunism.I've never really bought into the Koboldunism idea, it always broke my belief when you consider the way they view Dragons and what serving them usually entails: contributing to their personal treasury.>I don't see how that would be turned into an advantageUnfortunately I don't remember it too well, but I definitely think it had something to do with the way reloading a crossbow would work with them.
>>77703900>consider the way they view DragonsRight, so rather than ideal/utopian communism, it's modeled closer to the autocratic Soviet communism. All kobolds are equal, and it's essentially a flat hierarchy... except for the Dragon, who stands above all because the Dragon knows what's Best for the kobolds.Essentially, the prosperity of any given kobold in a clan is directly dependent on how much the Dragon cares about their well-being. You could have an idealistic clan with a wise, benevolent Dragon who possibly views how their kobolds are doing as part of their hoard (gotta keep your stuff in good shape after all), and also a miserable yet compelled-loyal clan with a greedy Dragon who just wants all the shiny and food, only sparing enough for their kobolds to keep them alive enough to work for the Dragon.>>77703834Hm, yeah. I was going to mention the utility for personal defense rather than location defense, but in that case, they'd go for kobold-sized ones anyway, instead.
>dragons are blinded by vanity and ego, allowing kobolds to seduce them through feigned admiration and to effectively use them as sentries in lairs that separate the outer and inner layers of kobold society
>>77704368>in addition, kobolds have over time increasingly come to exhibit traits in common with draconic whelps, aiding them in exploiting the parental instincts of dragons they encounter
>>77703783Honestly I would laugh my ass off if someone would get panic attack from just mention of spiders in rp session.
>>77704892Not that anon, but I once unintentionally sent someone into an episode by vividly describing the giant spiders from Dark Messiah of Might & Magic (specifically, the part where you enter a round chamber, and spiders start swarming down the walls around you from every direction). Now, I did deliberately play it up when he mentioned he had arachnophobia. I'm not proud of that, but I didn't expect how severely it would affect him, I just thought I'd freak him out a bit. He didn't scream or shout or anything, though, just sort of... locked up. Stared at the wall as if it was a thousand miles away, and it took like half a minute before he became responsive again.
>>77705980Oh fuck you for reminding me of that place. Absolute nightmare on top of being a meh level.
>>77703044Oh no, all of you including the trannies are insane. The same threads every day about the same shit.

>>77706090>The same threads every day about the same shit.So we shouldn't have threads focusing on one thing we want to discuss, should the same thing happen to the generals where they only discuss one game everyday?
>>77705980The problem with these type of people is that they shouldn't really be playing any fort of games if their own mental issues are that crippling. If you're the type of person who turns catatonic at the mention of spiders, then you need to do yourself and everyone else a favor and get extensive therapy, because you clearly are unwell to a debilitating degree that makes your own existence incompatible with reality itself, and that needs fixing pronto.Same applies to other issues as well. If you're the type of person who in unable to seperate or filter your responses to any "triggers" from the context of the situation, and it causes that level of disruption, then you really need to seek help before continuing doing anything else. And I say this as someone who is legit autistic and used to shrivel in on myself at the sound of dry paper rubbing together. That kind of stuff in unhealthy and aberrant, and you need to get the support and aid necessary to get over it.
>>77706602>used to shrivel in on myselfDid your teeth get itchy, too? Because that happens to me sometimes.
>>77706602>the type of person who turns catatonic at the mention of spidersIn fairness, he was fine with "just mentioning" spiders. Not to toot my own horn, but I can spin an evocative yarn when I put my mind to it. >>77706103It was just the two of us talking, and neither of us ever brought it up afterwards.
>>77684382Basado
>>77706715Not so much itchy, but up until my mid-teens I would get this strange fuzzy-sharp sensation that would feel like it would originate from inside the part of the head behind the ears (yknow, right before the hard skull part transitions to fleshy neck parts?). It would start there, then sorta shoot or spread into the teeth, around the sinuses, and along the spine.Nowadays I don't feel that sensation much anymore, except for when I eat a particularly unpleasant bite of food
>>77706967Imagine having your own army of scaly midgets at your disposal.
on this topic, why are social skill checks even a thing? there's no reason a player and DM shouldn't be able to converse in-character and arrive at a conclusion that way. if the DM needs to factor in random chance to figure out if an NPC was convinced of something or not, they need to work on their social skills a lot more before they play gamesseriously CHA is a meme stat that just caters to autists who shouldn't even be at the table
>>77708124Are you sure you're in the right thread or did you forget to reply to someone specific here?
>>77708124>autists who shouldn't even be at the tableWho do you think made these game, or started the entire ttrpg community to begin with?Of course the games and hobbies developed by socially awkward and self-conscious nerds who lack confidence and charisma will develop a system where they can make idealized characters that possess these skills and traits that they themselves lack. Because that's the point of stats, to allow a player to make someone who isn't themselves, who can be as smart, as sagacious, or as charismatic as they need to be even if they themselves are not these things. And what, you want to bully these same people out of the hobby that they themselves created and cultivated? You want to do to treat them the same way that resulted in them coming together and creating this community in the first place so that they could enjoy the company of like-minded individuals? You people already bullied the nerds and geeks out of every other aspect of society, you wanna take away their own communities too like a locust, driving them further and further away from society until they snap and blow up a convenience store with a pressure cooker?Fuck you and the horse you rode in on

>>77709898>>77708605Kobolds would make amazing Trench Fighters. Plus since they're so good at digging and forming excavation lines they could probably dig right into the enemy's trench
>>77709702>Why are physical skill checks a thing?I'm assuming it's supposed to prevent certain races from lifting weapons or equipment not built relative to them. A Kobold lifting a Orc war sword for example would require some suspension of disbelief, think a puppy trying to carry say a t-rex bone.
