Has anyone tried this before? Some friends and i were talking about doing an SMT type game if we could find or make functioning rules that weren't hyper autist or cringe. I would rather stay away from the persona side because cringe normie game, but it does have some easier things to work with, like set summons for specific characters.

Velvet Book
A hack of Monsters and Other Childish Things.
Uses ORE.

This would probably be your main bet. There's also Geist: The Sin-Eaters, which is WOD. Would maybe take some reflavoring but could definitely fit with what you're looking for

Do it in GURPS.

For the love of god understand when someone makes these threads they never want to hear the answer of GURPS.

Did Velvet Book use Persona 3? I thought it was Persona 5. I want a game where killing myself is a central dynamic

How you summon your persona is up to you, there's no strict mechanic for that.

P3 didn't have killing yourself as much as accepting death by using a metaphorical gun. That's basically the theme of the game. Same as P4 being about Tarot cards and defying your pre-chosen path by crushing them symbolically, and P5 being about denying the facade you've built up for the society around you, and thus masks. Etc.
