get a generic desk lamp from anywhere, the important part if you're getting LED bulbs (which there is no reason not to) is to get "cool white" for color correctness, "warm white" will make everything too orange.

Other than that, bright as possible is best, image related.
>>
>>76936561
I think he means that GSW is in Spain.

I've got to base some wild west/cowboy type of models and i'm not really sure what sort of effect and/or colours to go with. I'm thinking a dusty badlands sort of thing but no real idea how to do that
>>
>>76936670
it would be easier if you posted which part of the wild west you wanted to emulate, going by references is easier (ground could be yellowish, reddish or grayish)

for yellow-reddish/brown with greenish-bits I do
>vallejo dark sand / tallarn sand I think
>vallejo sepia wash / seraphim sepia
>vallejo desert dust wash / no GW equivalent I could find, it's like pale-sand+light_green
and
>splashes of vallejo umber wash / agrax earthshade

you could try what Abteilung 502 has to offer, although any middle-to-top-shelf-grade oil paint should do

Trying to make Tyranid infected Space Hulk bases. Think I'm going overboard with the rust colors. What else can I be doing to make the Tyranid corrosion pop?
>>
>>76937237
What did you use to make the organic looking bits? Is that just glue?
>>
>>76937237
There's some neat old art of the interior of Hive Ships... maybe look at some of that?
>>
>>76937267
So you use craft glue to make the shape or cover a surface, then lightly use any super glue on top. The super glue reacts with the moisture of the craft glue to form that detailing, crusting and slightly shrinking down into these organic looking patterns.
I just can't figure out what color will work for it besides grimy brown and green

I use odourless turpenoid and it doesn't eat through anything. The only reason I put a varnish of Pledge on is to use the gloss so the oil wash goes better into recesses. Old military modelling stuff. Buying a lot of specialised products is just consumerism and pointless.

Repost for new thread because I didn't see it. Man, I like military modelling grogs. They know their shit.

Went with a tester base instead on the far left. I like the flesh by itself on the left blob, I think I used too much purple over the flesh on the right upper corner blotch.
BUT darkening my gun metal grey with some blue and black makes the rust a bit less of a washout on the bases and the gunk looks like it stands out a bit better.
What do y'all think?

>>

>>
>>76938259
I use the gray because I live in a cold area where you can't spray paint outside for half the year. It works well for me, but you have to make sure you apply it evenly with the brush to avoid puddles. Also yeah don't thin it that just defeats the purpose of primer lol.

I'm using it on metal though so you need to put it on kind of thick. Thick and even with careful attention to detailed areas to avoid pooling.
>>
>>76938278
Maybe I just need to pay more attention. I'm just tired of seeing the 10,000th space marine.
>>
>>76938656
Maybe I shouldn't say "thick" but you just need very nice, even coverage over the entire model. I feel like that's actually easier to do with a brush than with a spray can. When I spray primer, I always miss some areas and get build-up in others that flakes off as I try and get it into every nook and cranny.
>>
>>76938314
>not thinning primer
>>
>>76938656
Have you tried to paint white on top of the grey vallejo primer? Does that work well?
>>
>>76938401
Iacquer primer is the best but its a hassle and produces toxic fumes.

Start with Mr color, Mr surfacer at 1000 or 1200. Thin with their lacquer thinner at 1:1 to see if its worth the effort.

No the paint cans are inside but being a commercial painter for 10 years, I think you guys are idiots. The paint won't adhere right and another bigger issue is that it won't dry properly, ever, and you'll probably get moisture in your paint. Have fun pretending like you're smarter than the chemists that make the paint lol.
Plus my area is very cold, below freezing temperatures all winter and snow/ice everywhere. Even if I did decide to spray paint outside in the frozen weather instead of brushing, I'm not bringing my painted stuff inside my small house to reek of awful paint fumes for hours.

Brush primer is superior anyway unless you're doing a huge batch of soldiers at once. The only things I ever truly need to spray paint are terrain pieces, and I can wait until summer to do those.

>>
>>76939275
Pretty sure I've seen unpainted or black-primed base edges in GW tourneys. It's up to you if you want black edges to "frame" the mini or if you want to paint them as you would the base.
Given that even the sweaty tourney grinders at Goonhammer have clean edges I probably wouldn't worry about it.
>>
>>76939456
Good to know, I'll have to pick that up once I finish my bottles of grey Army Painter primer.
>>
>>76939646
It's the first brush primer I've ever used so take that for what it's worth. I'll have to try the army painter stuff some time. Vallejo has such a good reputation that I just said fuck it and bought it.
>>
>>76939275
Personal preference, myself I always keep the rims black, I think it looks tidier, some people rage when that happens though.
>>
>>76939671
The Army Painter stuff feels ok, but the bottle's pretty small, so Vallejo's probably a better value buy. It also only comes in grey as far as I can tell.
>>
>>76939275
The best base edge color is goblin green.
>>
>>76939303
why
>>
>>76939629
I have one and hate it,
Mine has barely enough power to push out the most watered down of paints, and even struggled with inks and washes.
Mine might’ve been defective or might be more suited for coloured dyes.
But just get a proper compressor.

The “always on” nature of them is a bit annoying aswell.
>>
How long should I leave primed bits in 75% isopropyl to strip them? Is there any danger in leaving them to soak for too long?
>>
Does anyone have any experience with agitators? I'm using army painter stuff and I don't know if the washes need agitators or just the colours, metals etc.

Also, I got the wraithbone primer as I wanted to try out citadel contrast paints. I'm not really a fan of them so am I okay sticking with wraithbone for regular painting or should I switch to black or grey or something? Does it make regular colours richer like it does with contrast?

I'm 99% sure you don't need a mixer in a wash. As for the primer, I don't think it matters what colour you prime in, just use what you've got. If you don't like contrast then it's not like you have any other use for the wraithbone so just crack on with that, it won't matter one but I shouldn't think

I'm not very impressed with the contrast paints, I've found them very uneven and blotchy. If going by rarity and price (large rubies are VERY valuable)
Red for gold, green for silver, and blue for copper
Sapphire and ruby are the same mineral, rubies are the rarer variety.
But I'd consider swapping the blue and red just for the contrast. Blue gems on gold just works visually. Although good argument for the above arrangement, blue is dark and won't be as striking so good for common troops - can't outshine the boss. Blue might work well with silver though, and green could work great for copper.

It's salvageable, easily. Is the colorscheme basically correct? What are you trying to achieve in looks and techniques? Depending on what you're going for, that could be a decent base to work from. Hey /wip/ I am currently wondering if a vortex shaker or a nail polish shaker is a good investment to speed up the time of paint miniatures by having the paint mixed up properly.

Admittedly the above are not my first option, because I do have Lego technic pieces laying around, and I might try my hand at a hand cranked paint shaker such as this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKmiKw9KAgI

I used to use lava beads as agitators for my AP paints but ended up just buying a pack of of the AP ball bearings since they're heavier. I have pretty much the entire range of AP paints and have plenty of agitators left over. Never bothered using them for the washes, just give them a good shake otherwise they can be a bit glossy.

Personally I only use black primer since I generally always do zenithal for all of my undercoats. The cost of GW primer cans is retarded so I'd just stick with either a can of rustoleum/krylon black/grey primer or just use a brush on primer.

I own one, Gopher is the brand, and use it for primer and the main base color (and learning basics of airbrushing in the same time) and I'm perfectly happy with it. It's really not great, but it does what I need it to do so... And I'm a brushfag, and don't/won't use it for anything else. If you plan to go full airbrushing, it won't do I think, but I'd say it's so inexpensive it can be a good way to take your first step in airbrushing, since you'll prefere doing the newbs mistake or change your mind with a 30$ set like this. Plus once you get real stuff, you'll still be able to use this cheap airbrush for the heavy/dirty/risky work (varnish for instance).

Alright anons, time to say goodbye. I've got the coof so it's all over for me. It was fun hosting secret santa, 2020 was a shit show but it went about as smoothly as could be expected. All the grinched should now have a replacement gift on the way. Be patient we have more lock downs. Except Russia anon because your postal service is retarded beyond all rational ability to navigate it. Your match is trying his best.

I didn't use a grinch list and had minimal problems and with covid messing up post I don't think it's fair to put people in a naughty list when many tried their best.

Tips for future Santas
Have a plan for how you're going to match people going in. I found groups of twenty five and then matching those up as their own bubble worked well.
Keep a matched document as email isn't reliable to check (fuck cockli).
If you plan to host it expect a lot of whining anons to repeatedly email you over nothing and people to cry grinched the day after shipping day.
The trolling is funny, don't have a thin skin, it's 4chan.
European addresses with funny characters are annoying since google forms doesn't archive them correctly, you have to manually fix it. When you check those names are right expect to see a bunch of freaks and weirdos.
Make anons give full name and address, if you don't you have to ask for them or people can't ship in some locations.
Fuck coomers.

Good luck to whoever hosts next year. I'm looking forward to taking part.

Over sexualization ruins everything it touches. If you're a fan of old fantasy stories like the hobbit, there's no place for the hyper sexual content. Bilbo's story isn't improved by coomers wanting tits on a troll or female gandalf in a mini skirt and crotchless panties.

Video games and pornography have killed the soul of miniature design. It's low brow and unimaginative from an industry which used to thrive on small time artists able to express their cool ideas in pewter. Now it's mass produced porn and warcraft made from cheap crap plastic for mass consumption.

>>76953747
"No thinning necessary" >the label
Not sure if I'm being autistic tho.
>>
>>76953813
Depending on your nozzle size you still might want to add thinner or flow improver. Something like a .20mm nozzle might still clog, sputter, etc. despite what the label tells you. Just give or a go on some sprue or something and see where it gets you.
>>
>>76953722
Careful with taking pics of old meds bottles my texan friend.
>>
>>76953722
I use that same primer, you don't need to thin it. The primer isn't the issue and you shouldn't need to warm the bottle or use a vortex shaker, it's pretty homogenized already. The only exception for thinning is if you're using their white primer but even then if thinning was the only issue it wouldn't give you nearly that much texture.
Are you airbrushing it? If so your PSI is probably way too low and/or you're holding it the mini too far from the airbrush so it dries in mid air and you get that texturing. Possible the mini itself was already textured in which case you can take some high grit sandpaper to the bad areas. If you're using your brush to apply it you also don't need to thin it, just apply a single coat like you would a basecoat. Remember it's just supposed to stick to the mini so a fully "thick" opaque layer isn't necessary. Less is more with most primers.

Some important info:
1. If paint stays forever tacky ita because you primed a pvc mini with a spray can. The driving gas in cans will react with pvc and fuck the mini completely. This doesnt happen with all pvc variants, but reaper bones is the most known one. This is the reason they say "you dont need to prime them". They are just covering their legal ass, they need primer justlike every other material used to make minis. But if they said hey you need an airbrush, the whole tarket market of kids and amateurs would be alienates. Its amazing that nobody called them out on this.

2. Vallejo and stynylrez airbrush primers are used by top tier pros in display painting, as well as by wargamera all ober the world. If they dont work for you you fucked up. Stop posting gunpla weeb garbage go to /toy/ and dont come back

3. Mak is cool but op is pretty rude and hasnt mastered basic painting technique (watch him post that crappy mak pilot with a red gloss helmet as if its an argument for anything but his amateurness)

4. If you refer to colors by gw paint names and talk about "paint recipes" you are still a beginner

I used some acetone to strip the paint off some old models & (predictably) it's now all black with melted paint, & has lumps of plastic at the bottom (don't worry, the models were metal, I just chucked them in with the old bases attached to see what would happen). I assume I can reuse the acetone to some extent, although the plastic probably hasn't helped. Is there a known process for cleaning/filtering it to remove as much paint/plastic gunk as possible, to extend its use?

Well, oil on canvas can take that long for sure, but I hope you used some thinner. The thinner will evaporate much quicker than the linseed oil hardens. You can also mix in some quick drying agent into the paint and it will dry in like 10 hours.

>>
>>76959379

>>
>>76959550
Contrast paints work best on smaller bumpy / non-flat surfaces. That way they sink into the recesses rather than pool up in an uncontrollable way. Best way to test in on an actual miniature.
>>
>>76958557
The longest I've had anything dry was titanium white thinned with linseed, and that was 4-5 days.
>>
>>76959410
Yeah its alright, but like I said, when its forced into everything and ruins the things I like...I am allowed to protest.
>>
>>76959550
Looks like Flesh Tearer's Red which is a very very intense contrast paint. Seems to be working as intended, but note that most contrast doesn't work well over large flat surfaces like armor plates and those sprues. It's much better suited to organic surfaces with fine detail.

It would need some kind of rule to represent the ray tracing too if you go with the Doom95/doom 2 bfg. Be easier to first slot it in somewhere between existing weapons and work it out from there. Probably at least more powerful than a lascannon.
>>
>>76959776
Ray tracing would be easy.

Laquer is unsuitable for mini painting due to the need for respirators and thinners. Its advantage when painting articulated toys, like gundams is that it does not scratch off so easily when the parts move against each other.

For acrylic paints I am sure they are fine but there are many good acrylic paint brands so I never felt the need to import something from the other side of the world. Dont be loyal to any brand, its an artificial limitation you put on yourself for no reason

I use pre-mixed grout. It's generally got a texture to it but you can also choose to smooth it out with some work.
>>
>>76961327
Maybe I'm retarded but I haven't had a great experience with grout. Granted, I don't think it was pre-mixed, it was the dry powder that I added water to but it dried kinda smooth and shed lots of dust. What I like with that mire I posted is that loam-y color and structure. Aerated and clumpy looking.

Vallejo's earth texture / mud products seemed interesting, I don't know if this application of the russian mud is well representative of the results. It isn't quite on the mark but in the ballpark. Definitely more on the mud side, something to be used in combination maybe rather than replace.
