A dark square bishop fianchetto
For those seeking to be free
From blunders, and grow wise like Plato:
Natural looks 2. b3.

Yet off the beaten path lies wisdom
Of the forest's ginger man,
A king who rules a crooked kingdom,
Not afraid to push his men.

So turn to red your fearful pallor,
Ye who never won before!
The checkered jungle face with valour -
Boldly strike with 1. b4!!

Another good game with a colle setup. These really play themselves sometimes. Offered a pawn sacrifice into a knight sacrifice, leading to a windmill on his king.

no you are confusing me with the blitz player. i only play 30+0.
and my winrate is 36% which doesnt matter much though since i have only 36 games on this account. ill have to play a lot more games for the winrate to be meaningful.

Yeah it's more passive if you end up with a locked center you can f4, rook lift, into mating attacks similar to stone wall setups. My games usually involve tricky pawn pushes in the center and is just a solid intuitive game that doesn't rely on memorizing long sidelines. Makes it sound like a beginner opening (it is) but gm yusupov played it a lot and I can't argue with my own results

Seems pretty weird, looks like you are placing yourself in the Semi-Slav as white? Essentially forfeiting your first move advantage and giving black the initiative?
Maybe it's what's I need to chill since I always go all out barbarian with White (cant help it, it's too much fun) resulting never getting in the endgame (win or lose) causing me trouble when playing black that most likely go into endgames.

Someone give me a quick comparison of chess vs baduk/go? In terms of brain stimulation, fun and whatever criteria you want to tell me about. This is the first time that I visit /tg/ so please tell me if there is a better place to ask this than the biased chess thread
>>
>>76048864
>Someone give me a quick comparison of chess vs baduk/go?
the main difference is that go has a bigger branching factor
this means that go is more strategic and chess is more tactical, the difference is conceptually subtle but the game-play ends up quite different
go is 30% tactics 70% strategy, chess is 70% tactics 30% strategy

tactics is basically how good you are at parsing the tree of possible continuations in your mind - chess has a ton of that and the two players compete mostly in this regard since the tree is actually smaller and there's more of a benefit in parsing it. The tree in Go is so large that the returns from parsing it aren't great, in go you have to rely more on strategy
strategy is more about principles, concepts, general features of the position, understanding
not saying chess has no strategy, but there's less of it
this is why classical chess engines parse a tree
while the recent go (and chess) engines use a neural net and a tree search.
Basically for you to truly understand the differences you need to have some insight into the games

hope this helped

random how?
explain how the st george defence is "random".
if you fail to do this your post falls apart - its entirely based on the presumption that the opening is random.
if its not random, your post has no point, no argument, no worth.
you would have a point if the st george defence is indeed random. but you have yet to prove it.

Question!
Until beginning of October I had played maybe 10-15 chess games in my life. I registered at chess.com and started playing blitz 10 min. It gave me a rating of 1000 and I started losing every game until I fell to ~400 then I had my first win and began improving. Now 50 days and 899 games later I’m at a rating of 1073. I haven’t done anything in the line of learning chess besides playing online. w/l/d is 446/397/56. Am I progressing alright? Is there hope for me of ever becoming good? I’m 27 btw
>>
>>76050289
I don't play either, actually.
>>
>>76048495
>>76048823
Yeah sorry colle starts at 22:38 but the entire video is worth watching because it helps to deviate from colle depending on how black responds. If black plays nf6 right away I will sometimes use the Torre instead.

Your Dsb is indeed awkward and most people play zukertort colle nowadays where you fianchetto it instead of letting it sit there. I would definitely give it a try , Spencer has a video on yusupov colle games on finegold channel and gingergm has a lecture on the zukertort colle/Torre as well
>>
>>76050322

>>
>>7605068
Thanks a lot for the recommendation. Right now I get a real kick of improving my rating just by playing. However, when I inevitably hit the wall, that’ll be the right time to start reading. Is chess.com a good place to play? I think some people actually cheat there. I struggled to go past 900 but after I reached 1000 then it became much easier for some reason. Are those ratings accurate?

So just about finished with the first two principles (force and time)? I'd say that the last two (space and pawn structure) are the most likely to contain new information for a beginner. If Yasser's book is too basic for you, get The Amateur's Mind by Silman. There's some overlap between Seirawan's "four principles" and Silman's imbalances, but the latter are way way more advanced.

Computer hated my position but it felt pretty good to play (blitz)
>>
>>76059004
I don't think the screenshots show him admitting to anything. It looks like you called him a cheater from the beginning and he just basically said "ok".

That being said, it looks like I played this guy a year ago, and he was rated 1880 in blitz. He might be sandbagging or something.
>>
>>76059153
He didn't "basically say ok", he quite literally confirmed that he cheated multiple times. Literally
>You cheated dude
>Yep
Which doesn't even need context, but even comes in context of other confirmation. Don't know why you're trying to paint this as ambiguous. Doesn't get anymore straight forward.
>>
>>76059201
I've been accused of cheating before when I wasn't. I just said "ok buddy, I was totally cheating" and then clicked "New Opponent". Lichess never did anything to me, nor would I expect them to.
>>
>>76059231
That's a cool anecdote, but you have stop trying to project it onto a different situation. This isn't "ok buddy, I was totally cheating" where he's being sarcastic. This was me calling him out and him confirming it multiple times in a "do something about it" way. Again, it doesn't get more straight forward than
>You cheated dude
>Yep
>Thanks for admitting it
>Yep
You're just being contrarian for no reason.
>>
>>76059324
Are you new to the internet
>>
>>76059324
I don't see a huge difference between what I said and what he said, but obviously you see something there.

I noticed in the computer analysis that he made two blunders and one mistake. Don't you think it's hard to argue he was cheating?
>>
>>76059447
Now he's retarded for thinking that person cheated but so are you for thinking that's a way to check
Cheaters never play with 0 mistakes because if they did they'd be banned very quickly
They generally play shit openings and then at some point in the midgame start fucking you like a dog
Either that or they just cheat on a couple moves when they recognize they're at a crucial moment, and the computer moves generally leave them with a very easy to play position
>>
>>76059447
I don't understand why you're trying so hard to overcomplicate it. If I show you a game I played and you say, "Did you cheat?" and I say, "Yep." And you say, "So just to be clear, you actually cheated?" And I say, "Yep." Where the fuck would you get off thinking, "Wow, I too have been sarcastic in my time." It's pretty cut and dry, dude.
>I noticed in the computer analysis that he made two blunders and one mistake. Don't you think it's hard to argue he was cheating?
You don't understand how cheating works. You don't do it every move. Or you can, with a program that suggests slightly subpar, but still engine moves. But that's not the situation here. He got mad that he was losing, gave me a bunch of time, I laughed and reciprocated, then all the sudden he became a different player with the additional time. I was only suspicious, I wasn't accusing him outright, I started out by saying, "Kind of suspicious dude," but he basically said "fuck you" and didn't try to hide it at all.
>>
>>76059492
There was one middlegame blunder and one endgame blunder. They played a regular-ish Caro-Kann. Out of the opening, there was a slight edge for Black, but that's not really indicative of anything. In the endgame, both white and black had a knight each and a bunch of pawns. That guy just shit the bed by dropping pawns every other move. It was a drawn position as late as move 42 (there were 54 moves in total).

>>76059538
Looking at the time stamps, you guys were basically playing on the increment for the first 25 or so moves.

On move 32, he spent 31 seconds before making a blunder. Then you gave him a ton of time on move 36. Then he gave you two extra minutes on move 37. He then made a mistake on move 40. On move 43, he spent 45 seconds on one move and you gave the two minutes back (??). You then spent very little time thinking about your moves for the rest of the game, and ended up dropping most of your pawns.

>I started out by saying, "Kind of suspicious dude," but he basically said "fuck you" and didn't try to hide it at all.
Yes, because chess players are well known for responding politely when accused of cheating

"You cheated."
"Yep. :)"

"Yep."
You: "I don't think this guy is cheating. You must be an autist for thinking so."
Or you're just hopelessly retarded.

in all seriousness people on chess24 seem more interested in actually playing chess, it attracts the proper enthusiasts. the other two are nearly social media tier sites where you’ll encounter a bunch of loser cheats invested in their rating (like instagram likes or something).

Not really, it’s past time actually. And he’d say, “Ok but sure you’re still exactly the same as me physically? Can’t you read minds yet or something?” It’s actually amazing that it’s taken us this long to get around to tinkering with *ourselves*.
The last major jump in humanity was when we discovered language. The next is Neuralink (or some form of it) and it’s arguably long overdue.

But if Nc6 or Nd7, plant a pawn on c4. Play it out and observe how uncomfortable it is to try and kick the bishop (a6, Ba4, b5 obviously loses a pawn). Most often they'll have never seen this before and will contort themselves up their own asshole and eat up the clock. It's not actually super complicated, just Bd7 after all (at which point you retreat to c2). But it's a nice little wrinkle of an opening that not everyone takes well.

Is Hikaru right about Fabi?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CSnDTBhVvDQ
>>
>>76061549
I'm sure he knows better than any of us, but my impression has always been that Fabi is the second most well rounded player in the world. Hikaru makes it sound like he's a theory babby, but here's a pretty telling game between them. This had nothing to do with the opening, it was pure Tal-esque asswhoop. https://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1849553
>>
>>76061549
For Hikaru, everyone who eternally BTFO's him in classical chess is a theory monkey. The asshole said the same thing about Kasparov, fucking Kasparov of all people.
>>
>>76061641
>my impression has always been that Fabi is the second most well rounded player in the world
Fabi has 11th best rapid and 38th best blitz rating. I'd say the second most well rounded player is Ding.
>>
>>76061730
Blitz is irrelevant. We are discussing classical chess.
>>
>>76061730
I'm not talking about well rounded in terms of time controls, I'm talking about style of play in classical. And Ding is obviously elite, but I don't think he's on Fabi's level. Magnus has said Fabi is his total equal in Classical, which is reflected in their WC match. Ding will probably never even win a candidates (certainly not this one and the clock is ticking).
>>
>>76061641
Another classic example, Magnus decides to sac and make it sharp, maybe thinking along the same lines as Hikaru, that if you yank Fabi out of book he'll flounder. Observe the outcome! https://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1772638

Hello /chess/. I've decided that if I'm going to do this, I'd like to share my experience with everyone.

What am I talking about? Well, simply put I'm going to be playing the least popular time control on all of Chess.com for standard chess: 45/45.

Now obviously question one would be...why??? Well, I've been playing some club chess for a while and I must say I must say I prefer the calculated style of classical chess to the more memory-orientated blitz or rapid modes. I have tried daily chess before, but I feel like when I sit down to play chess it is with the intent of playing a full game, not a move or two, so this is what I'm going with.

Why am I posting it here? I suppose the first reason is in an attempt to gain it some popularity, or at least enough that I can find a game some time in the next hour. The other reason is that I plan to improve not only my playing but analytical skill, so I will, along with the tools available, be giving breakdowns of my games, which would of course serve more useful should discussion be involved, as other players being able to chime in should help me improve more quickly.

Third reason? So I have something to check in the other tab while waiting 5 minutes for my opponent to make a move...

I'll be starting my search now, having had one game aborted already. Wish me luck! Or don't, I'm not your boss.
>>
>>76091729
how was the last non classical game you played
>>
>>76091729

>>
>>76091729
Why do you have to make a post about this, you're not the only one that plays classical game modes dude

also, 15 minute game masterrace. You get the factor of time pressure without the autism of blitz games. Also you don't spend the whole day playing a game like a dweeb.
>>
>>76092201

>>
>>76092225

>>
>>76092245
I can understand that 15 would be a nice middle ground for those that enjoy playing to the clock, but I prefer to play Chess in a relaxed setting, not to mention I can't always guarantee I won't be interrupted during play, so not having to worry about timing out is a big help.

I think Carlsen has a point. I live in a country where it's true, but I don't know if it's true in the west. I think part of it also has to do with interest. Women are more interested in other things.

https://www.psychologytoday.com/intl/blog/the-scientific-fundamentalist/200901/why-men-are-more-intelligent-women

https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2017/04/study-finds-some-significant-differences-brains-men-and-women

Men claim higher average scores, but I believe the difference is so small (3-5 points on average) that the most probable reason is greater variance that is found in men. Women are generally more similar to each other while men are more different. The reason is probably biological; women choose their mates, so it makes perfect sense that the variance exists in the sex that is being selected rather than the one that is doing the choosing.

>>76096790
This is undoubtedly true, but there is still a significant number of women that are interested in chess, go, and other intellectual games, but they never manage to perform as well as men.

A white supremacist whose findings show that asians have higher intelligence averages than whites. Quite the peculiar supremacist, wouldn't you say?

Women are generally not as intelligent as men, and there are vastly more geniuses among the men than women thanks to the greater variance found in the male population. Intelligence is necessary to perform well at high level chess, and women are not likely to be that smart. That is not to say that women can't be as smart, or smarter, than men, it's just astronomically unlikely.

yes, and despite what these trannies say, this is a good thing. You can try really hard and maybe double the percentage of women chess players (still quite low) but for what? An average woman obviously would not enjoy something like chess as much as an average man and if they do then they have all the encouragement in the world to play. I'm not sure why these people don't see that being extra patronising to women with the empowerment tropes is sexist in and of itself by their own axioms.

>spouting polsci
I am an actual MENSA member, 30 to 40% of the members are women (depending on country).
I don't see 30 to 40% of chess players or GM's being women.
Ergo it's mostly about interests and culture
>inb4 b-but there's still a difference in your numbers
Yeah, fully accounted by the number of applicants taking IQ tests.
>>
MENSA is a meme
for example 2 years old can enter
and there's a MENSA Brazil
and MENSA says that the country with most genius per capita is Finland, a country which has contributed pretty much nothing to humanity

is dysgenics the thing that occurs when a bunch of butthurt germs kill 115 average iq jews all over europe

sure, but if you dedicate too much time to it you're a loser imo.

yes. Not even chess books, but books in general;

No. But there are a lot of draws in classical time control

no, it's mostly draws. white has an advantage that's why they play like 12 games

>I am an actual MENSA member
You’re obviously not unless they’re hopping on the inclusivity train and letting anyone in these days because if you were you’d understand that my original statement that men are inherently better than women at chess on average is not analogous to the statement that men have higher IQs than women. Chess skill and IQ are not proportional in the first place, not nearly to the same degree as chess skill and a certain mental vigour and fortitude or chess skill and personality traits of hyper-competitiveness (relating back to my original point about how Carlsen should be forced to inject estrogen and watch his rating plummet) the former of which are difficult to psychometrically quantify in the first place and the latter which no one will study because it’s textbook fact by this point. Regardless, reading the internet chess community’s cope about why there isn’t a real life Beth Harmon yet to vindicate their delusional little worldviews is amusing to say the least and only highlights that intelligent people can cope just as hard, and with more self-certainty rather than just the regular appeal to authority. Polgar was 8th at her peak ranking and it’s highly unlikely there will even be a Polgar again, simply due to her upbringing if nothing else, let alone a female world champion.
>>
>>76100693
Yeah, it's become popular after the video. But idk it seems it requires some work after getting the queen.
>>
you do know that you can study IQ tests, right?
do like 5-10 at home of the same kind your MESA (not necessarily the same question) asks and suddenly you're a super genius
>>
>>76096851
>but I believe the difference is so small (3-5 points on average)
That's not a small difference, it's huge deal at both tails of the distribution. You believe it's a small difference because you are just preemptively coping because in your own "science" asians tend to have 5 points more on average. I know your shit inside and out and have heard it a million times and know all the holes, contradictions and the copes
>>76101401
The post I was responding to directly refers to IQ and intelligence.
Also your response is basically
>personal attack
>some schizoid human endocrinology
>pop culture referrence
>judit polgar
>>
3-5 is a small difference, but it's made much worse by the distribution
women have a similiar iq distribution to mongoloids, as in they are way more average
>>
>>76101649
>>personal attack
A personal attack would be if I called your mother a cunt (which she is by the way). I simply said that if you are a part of mensa you should be able to acknowledge what I’m saying without spouting fallacious arguments left and right
>>some schizoid human endocrinology
women have much more estrogen than men which clouds reasoning and decision making to a degree enough to practically eliminate them from the highest level of chess and reduce their performance at other levels severely. What’s schizoid about this? You seem to keep finding ways to cope
>>pop culture referrence
>>judit polgar
Are you implying either of these things wasn’t relevant?
>>
>>76101924
you don't even know what estrogen is

Variance is caused by genetic mutation, mutation shows more easily in males since both the x and y chromosome have no "back up" so every change counts, where in females the regular variation in one x overwrites the mutation in the other x chromosome, similar to colour blindness.

I am not a fan of tricky openings. But I like his style and also it helps me with some general ideas.

I think books would be more useful but I am not trying to become a top player plus consider his videos a type of entertainment.
>>
>>76102422

He prefaces all his trap opening vids saying that you shouldn't use them against players who know what they're doing. Where's the problem? If he's playing seriously he doesn't use that sort of thing himself, it's just for fun.

Suppose that's true, then african IQ is still far below that of the average European or East asian. Looks like it averages at 80 or so judging by the spread.

it is indeed 80
however the point is that lynn (and most of his polfag followers) claim a figure of 60 or 70 based on cherrypicked data

Might as well be shoenice at this point
