I'm running a P&P RPG game at the moment where my players will soon find themselves in what is effectively (but not actually), the Realm of Chaos.
I want to design some encounters/puzzles that really extenuate how crazy everything is here that challenge both the character (through combat and skill checks) and the player (through strange rules the world opposes on them.
A few I have already thought of:
>You see a group of fighters and cultists performing some dastardly deed on a maiden, but when you approach, it seems like you are getting further away. When you reach them they turn out to just be the tiny Chaos Familiars models.
>You find another non-demon group travelling through the realm. If you approach them they get further away, if you flee they get closer. When you attack, you hit whatever is behind you instead. If to move one direction, you will move the opposite way.
>The players ultimately will be walking to a mountain range they know separates the real world from this one. Once they reach it I'll run an encounter of them trying to scale the mountain, and once they are relived they've found the real world once more, make them scale down. However once they reach the bottom they bump into a canvas. The facade dissolves as a demon reveals himself and fucks with the players for a little bit,
I have a couple others, but they're not quite as good. However I am really struggling to get enough interesting encounters. Anyone have any ideas?

What models are you working on
>>
>>66739136
Realm of metal; scale mechanisms that require cog-beetles to be inserted. Said beetles are running around.

Realm of death; spooks, skellies and dead loved ones wanting a premature reunion?

Realm of Life/beasts; fuckhuge forest out of nowhere with fauna easily double the regular size?
>>
>>66739136
All great ideas. I think introducing a guide character who may or may not have the players' best interests at heart might be interesting. Making them fight inside a real-life Escher painting where the walls and ceilings can all be walked on and connect to the ground in weird ways might be fun, though you'd have to make sure the ranged attackers can't cheese it by just shooting everything that isn't on the ground.
Also this whole weird architecture and mind fuckery theme you're going for makes me think of Final Fantasy 15's Pitioss Ruins. Maybe look that up.

Just aquarium plants from cheap shops. Some of them are from pet shops but most are just from places like Choice here in Australia. Hot glue them to the base, paint the glue with Rhinox Hide to make them look like dirt/bulbs then hit the leaves with Athonian Camoshade to get rid of the plastic sheen.

Don't know if you're still around fellow ratbro, passed out shortly after posting.

The skin/fur is a basecoat of Dheneb Stone all over, the fur parts are picked out with Dawnstone Grey. They are then given 2 pretty thicc washes of Devlan Mud. The skin is then highlighted with Bleached Bone. Tried to keep it simple as I still have alot of clanrats to get through.

The top cloaks are Scaley Green (now OOP) highlighted with a Bleached Bone mix.

Bottom cloaks are Snakebite Leather started off with a little black mixed in and then layered back up.

These were painted probably over 7 years ago now (yikes) when I was really into mix intensive layering so busted that out on the bottom cloaks but it took to much time for basic clanrats I think.

Thanks! I used a basecoat of Vallejo Metal Colour Steel, then stippled a bit of Typhus Corrosion in areas I wanted to look especially rusted, then glazed with washes, spreading the rust from the most corroded parts, and making sure not to just wash the same spots (i.e. some overlap, but not too much), with Nuln Oil closest to the Typhus, Agrax spreading further, Seraphim Sepia even further, and then some dabs of Camoshade in random places to tie in with their dragon skin.

I also drybrushed some Vallejo Rust or Ryza Rust (can't remember which).

Lastly I added tiny scratches with Vallejo Pale Burnt Metal (I think).

I have some money to start building my army and I'm trying to choose between aelves, dispossessed, freeguild, and std. The only problem is that all of them are probably going to get in update within a year so I don't want to get anything right now and just have a bunch of outdated models. If I have outdated models all the people at my store will laugh at me and say I have a smol pp. What do?

>>
>>66740473
Don't go with elves, unless you are gonna do either wanderers or darkling covens. Those have very recent models and proper support, so they'll just get new units (in the case of wanderers, darklings will get their microfactions merged back) and a tome. Neither dispossessed nor freeguild will have their models replaced either, they are all plastic and don't look bad. Again, they'll just get their microfactions merged back and a tome. StD, though, is gonna get several re-sculpts fairly soon, so if you go with them either don't touch marauders, warriors and chosen or wait at least until the Open Day.
>>
>>66740523
It still looks outstanding. I'll try it out!
>>
>>66740473
Just be wary of base sizes. Dispossessed on 25s is definitely not happening when they get a tome.

If you're so insecure then your pp must be smol, hairless and smooth.
>>
Yo do we have some news bout new StDs and Warcry? Been out of loop and only seen some pics of bird bois
>>
>>66740473

Go with Freeguild; I actually think that most of their models are very nice. And if you check out Fireforge Games newest Kickstarter, they just produced some beautiful "House Stark"-inspired models that would work really well for Freeguild too.

I'm starting a Greek-themed Free People army myself.
>>
>>66740532

Thanks, and good luck! The washing isn't too tricky; it's just the stupid lines and scratches after that are a pain in the ass.

>>66740573
Arkanauts are also on 25mm bases. Fyreslayers were on 32mm even before getting two wounds, those aren't related. They don't think about that when giving bases, they just give what the models need to fit in. Both dispossessed and KO come with their round bases, which they aren't gonna change. Dispossessed already went from 32mm to 25mm during the first months of the base size chart.

Thank you. I actually really like the look of chaos warriors right now which is why I bought a few a month or so ago in spite of the inevitable update. Also what is the open day?
>>
>>66740565

I would say throw out your Citadel metal paints to start with lol. You'll get a much nicer look with Vallejo Metal Colour. Not to say Citadel Paints are bad in general, but Vince Venturella is right when he says that their metals are shit.
>>
>>66740574
>>66740592

Like even in the pic you're aiming for, you can see really gross visible pigment in the metal. Vallejo Metal Colour gives you a beautiful smooth coat that actually looks as close as possible to metal as you get in acrylic.
>>
>>66740348
You people are such faggots. IJ models are great and when you actually try to build a list you'll see you can't take that many bodies anyway so why do you need more? Just take allies if you want other stuff or destruction soup.
>>
>>66740592
>>66740604
At least mine is vallejo model air metallic black. I actually like the grain, it makes it look like rough, thick iron, which seems perfect for chaos armour.

The 20th of july GW will make an AoS Open Day, basically an event in Warhammer World where, among other things, they'll be a big studio preview. It's also gonna be the day Warcry releases and it'll be playable there. Now, Warcry's narrative is all about Archaon mustering an army and that StD are one of the Malign Portents armies, it's fairly obvious they'll be announced there.

do you intend to actually play fyreslayers?

because vulkite berzerkers certainly arent bad. you will probably want to run 30-40 in a 2k list for sitting on objectives and generally holding the line.

while its true that hearthguard berzerkers, auric hearthguard, and magmadroths and lesser heroes will form the hammer of your force, you will also need bodies, and vulkites are your best bet there

Why would you ever prime them black?

That just make doing the white harder and doing the trim gold is just more hard and time consuming (and as a matter of fact you messed up all of them) than doing the armor instead.

You should have prime them either white then basecoat the gold first, or straight up prime gold

In one way, sure.
2 points though; (1) why wasnt the NH tome given such competent tools in the first place? And (2) why are they only half a legion with half the traits, artifacts and spells compared to the other legions? Do they even benefit from the LoN's locust of power allegience trait?
>>
>>66741786
>>66741760
we were just looking over it the other day and with legion of grief its possible to get up to -9 bravery penalties going on. with the prevalence of banshees and other bravery based attacks in death, along with the ability to mercenary in some death screaming units from FEC and just the general losses from actual battleshock, legion of grief is sporting some extremely nasty bravery bombs that will make even the likes of daemons or other death armies auto fail battleshock

That is actually good, I believe the old LoN was able to achieve - 4 Bravery or somesuch.
I got royally rustled when GW bragged you could get - 9 Bravery using SCE during NH release week last summer, while simultaneously denying it to the literal ghost faction.

the reason the legion of greif makes such great use of the bravery bomb is not by causing units to fail battleshock, it's by reducing their bravery and then blasting them with banshee shrieks and death screams.

turns 80 pt heroes into 2d6 mortal wound cannons. SCE can reduce bravery, sure, but they cant do anything like that with it as far as i know

What are The components to make the bravery tank?
>>
>>66742086
i dont have it handy, so im trying to remember (at work), but its something like -2 from a command trait, -1 from legion bonus, -2 from nagash head endless spell, -1 from assorted death unit banners (like skeleton warriors), i think there might have been a non endless spell. sorry, i dont recall all the pieces off the top of my head but theres like 6 or 7 points of it.

for the units to take advantage of it, you take flesh eater courts mercenaries with death screams, and as many tomb banshees as you can muster.

it's very possible to be able to huck like 10d6 mortal wounds at a target in a single turn
>>
>>66742190
Oh, it's just lame death soup. Gotcha. I suppose that should have been expected. I'll have to pass because frankly, I don't feel like buying what is effectively another army just to pretend my NH banshee army is real.
>>
>>66742244
.....only like 1 point of the bravery bomb comes from a non-nighthaunt source, and you could easily just use more banshees instead of the FEC for the same results.

a good khorne army usually spends its points on mostly mortals, and then spends its blood tithe points to bring in daemons.

you rarely want to have daemons in your initial list apart from bloodthirsters who are excellent in all situations. instead, take a few minimum units of blood warriors, a few minimum units of blood reavers, a big unit of blood reavers to concentrate buffs on, and then add specialty units and heroes. skull reapers and wrath mongers are both good in their own way, mighty skull crushers are super tough and hit very hard, and for heroes i would recommend a bloodsecrator, the whip guy, 2 slaughter priests with the altar if you can get it, and then add combat heroes to taste. skar bloodwrath compliments wrathmongers very well, a mighty lord on juggernaut goes great with skull crushers, and skull reapers go with everything.

once your units start dieing, try to save blood tithe pts to get up to 8 to get a free bloodthirster, but if its turn 4 and you dont have enough for him or you need to bring something in immediately, go for bloodletters instead

tldr; spend pts on mortals, spend blood tithe on daemons.

You can, but shouldn't.
>>
>>66745075
Not solely. Daemons are nice and all, but the best buffs you can give them come from the Bloodsecrator, the best chaff to enable your daemons to make it to melee are Bloodreavers and Slaughterpriests are down right mandatory. But other than those, you can go for mostly daemons. The problem is just that you can summon daemon units for free but you can't summon mortal units so it's more efficient to leave the daemons out of your army and summon them later.

Weakling.
>>
>>66745290
I played with it a lot and I can tell you a few things about it. A lot of people using it are going to tell you that its changing the painting game. Its not. Shit painters will still have shit models, and I'd argue that its even harder to use contrast well than it is to use normal paints well.

The colors are so high saturation that the models often look cartoony, though I'm not sure if that can be solved by a matte finish or not, I never tried. The paint itself behaves like a wash, but has incredibly high pigment density. It's very thin though, so it can't really build up color on any undercoat darker than the color you are trying to paint with.

The thing it does better than any other paint is coverage. This shit STAINS models. one touch to the model and the color is there. It just is, the only way to change the color would be to paint over it with regular paint after it dries. Which is a good and a bad thing because it makes basecoating really fast, but it also means that if you accidentally have paint "outside the lines" on part of the model, the contrast paint can't cover it up. You'll need to touch the spots up with white before going over it again with contrast paint, otherwise it will just add a slight tint to the color that was on there, not cover it up.

Overall, its neat for stuff like skin, or bark, but horrible for armor or weapons.

Also it creates very thin layers, so you HAVE to seal that shit or it will chip away.
>>
>>66745425
>varnishing, something you should always do anyway.
but doesn't it ruin the paintjob?
>>
>>66745290
They are perfect for me though. Zenithal highlights + an off white drybrush and then glazes. Saves me the trouble of having to thin down the paints.
>>
>>66745586
No, why would it? It's a transparent matte layer.
>>
>>66745586
Never had that happen before. The only thing that can happen is that it looks unpleasantly glossy if you use glossy varnish on something that's supposed to be matte.
>>
>>66745586
Why the fuck would it?
>>
>>66745586
A matt varnish will dull the colors, and a gloss varnish will saturate them. A satin varnish will keep them fairly true.

As long as you don't hyperblast your models and get a nice even, thin coat, it'll look fine.

The current aesthetics are just a bit too subtle for someone who is heavily into the old "total diversity" thing that the renegades had (which was slightly clownish IMHO). For example, the FW chaos dwarfs have ringlet beards per the old Babylonian aesthetic. Their armour contains non-duardin runes. Their hands weapons differ from normal duardin. As already noted, the heroes and war machine crew both have heavy Babylonian aesthetics.

daemons are, aside from the bloodthirster, worse in every way compared to the mortals. however, you can summon them for free with blood tithe points which is where they come in handy.

bloodthirsters are all around great and including at least 1 in your starting list is usually recommended, though it wouldnt be bad to bring 2 or 3 if you felt so inclined, they are very good behemoth heroes.

>>66745176
khornes best units are all mortals, and thanks to the new blood tithe bonus table, you can spend those points on buffs instead of summoning if you so choose. summoning will still be a better use for them, but this way you can run without any daemons and still use the points. as for which mortals to run, you need the usual array of support heroes such as a preist, a bloodsecrator, maybe a bloodstoker, then just add reapers, skullcrushers, and wrathmongers to taste, with their accompanying support heroes. make sure everyone is in the overlapping buff bubbles, run some chaff in minimum units for blood tithe pts, and away you go.

AAR from yesterday's trip to WW.
We had fun. Even though one person rocked up with a death army in which he had painted 3 skeletons and neferata and fuck all else.
My buffed Endrinriggers one shorted a pair of Fulminators who foolishly attacked my screen with his charge and not my balloonbois. But that was probably the most interesting thing that happened. Unsurprisingly dumping 40 skellies on the middle objective and camping neferata on the other won them the game.
Nothing particularly whack happened but I did see Duncan and the guy from the Honest Wargamer podcast. He gave me a dice, seemed nice.
Oh unpainted dire wolves on square bases. How cancer is that?

So much fun! I feel like this army requires a lot of thinking around what you need to do, what you can do, and what your opponent will probably do. It’s kind of a sit back and react kind of army. Here’s my 2k army, minus the endless spells; the spiteswarm hive for extra 3” movement/charge and the portal for extended summoning range.

>>

Added? not really. the most "new" faction that isnt an update of an older faction is Idoneth Deepkin. To be Honest im suprised you havent found any army that appeals to you. There are so many factions and models, there has to be SOME faction you like. Tell me, what do you like best when it comes to lore and what do you like best when it comes to the look of models, aesthetics and gameplay? What qualities are you looking for in an army?

It sounds like a good thing that I don't plan on going Pestilens... huh, with that thought, could I convert the start set Plague monks into something else? Clanrats for example, or is that not really viable with the bits provided?

But I'm planning on more going clan Skryre/Moulder. Take the Screaming Bell/Warp Lightning Cannon options in the box. Technorats are best.

For what? Dryads have to be set up in woods, endless spells cant set up with the spell portal.
Seems like a waste of 60 points to use on verdant blessing (assuming you can even do that, since the model must be set up within range of the caster).

It's a GW cutting mat. You don't need one of those. It's just for when you're doing the cutting on a table you'd prefer not to have full of cuts and scratches. If it's a dedicated work table that you don't mind scratching up, a mat is a worthless investment. Unless of course you like the idea of having measurements right there in front of you.

Man, I don't even know really. I've painted up almost everything else in my current Nighhaunt box. This is the last unit I have to do before I paint my Knight of Shrouds. I've done Black Knights before with no real issue, and I even cranked through 40 Chainrasps relatively quick. I just have no desire at all to paint these fuckers. I guess I'll just have to do some shots tonight and sit down with the airbrush and knock out as much as I can.

Eh, I was never found of how Nighthaunt Gloom turned out. Very flat looking. I already have the pre-painting stuff done and have gone over them a couple of times with the airbrush. So I'm like halfway done. It's just forcing myself to finish them.
>>
>>66748468
I might have been a little harsh. The old designs have a lot of character, but they are pretty cartoonish and don't sit well alongside a lot of modern miniatures. I'm a huge fan of the FW aesthetic, but I've never encountered any kind of zealous devotion to them. I imagine that some who've invested in a whole FW army might feel a need to defend their budgetary choices.

Outside of all that - the chaos dwarf community is pretty obsessive and passionate regardless. I mean, we held on for something like 15 years out in the cold...

It adds 18” to my summoning. I get an extra forest for free with my ancients and the Vesperal Gem artifact lets me auto cast a spell without it being able to be dispelled so I can guarantee another forest. The goal of this is to sling dryads forward to grab objectives. Summoned forests can be 1” away from objectives.

Demons are the best khorne units. Demon hosts are the two best hosts.
Take doggo battleline, crushers as damage dealers and thirsters as hero hunters.
Only take priests for judgements.
Only ever take bloodsecrator if you play letters.

Mortals all suck balls except for skullreapers. The only good mortal list is Slaughterborn. Everything else is eother full demon or mortal filler + demon damage dealers + maybe skullreapers.

Nagash keeps my soul safe through the storm. I gave my friend the third Knight of Shrouds, and I'll just convert the two extra Spirit Torments into Chainghasts. The only units I'll have to buy are just Harridans (cause I like Banshees), and Reapers. If you look for sales and buy people's armies on eBay you can still dab on GW making Nighthaunt almost prohibitively expensive.

Google a little bit. There's a forum post on how to squeeze the best value out of the Start Collecting box out there, I think the site is Lustria Online or something.
The basic principle is that you build the Saurus Warriors but pick one out and give him a super fancy standard to use as an Astrolith Bearer, build the Knights but pick one out and make him extra fancy so you can use him as a Hero, build the Carnosaur with one rider, base the other rider and the Skink separately and then build the leftover Troglodon parts so they look like they're coming out of a pool of water on the base.
