The game I am currently running, which is definitely just set in a re-skinned Old World, my players are about to find themselves somewhere which is definitely not just a re-skinned Chaos Wastes.
I want to design some encounters/puzzles that really extenuate how crazy everything is here that challenge both the character (through combat and skill checks) and the player (through strange rules the world opposes on them.
A few I have already thought of:
>You see a group of x doing something in the distance but when you approach, it seems like you are getting further away. When you reach them they turn out to just be the tiny Chaos Familiars models
>You find another group of non-demons walking through the wastes. If you approach them they get further away, if you flee they get closer. If you try and attack you hit whatever is behind you and if you try to move forwards you move backwards.
>The players ultimately will be walking to a mountain range they know separates the real world from the Wastes. Once they reach it I'll run an encounter of them trying to scale the mountain, really drag it out. Once they get over I'll describe the world they came from, once again drag it out and make them scale down. However once they reach the bottom they bump into a canvas. It is not the real world and it dissolves as a (couldn't be)Pink Horror reveals himself. Fucks with the players for a little bit (getting them to attack one another and all that jazz) while splitting down into Blue and Brimstone horrors.
I have a couple others not quite as good as those three but I am really struggling for interesting encounters. Anyone have any ideas?

Impossible geometry: ancient, long lost buildings, maybe temples or even entire cities, whose structures and layout cannot possible be that way. Basically steal that from Lovecraft. I think Malekith had the same experience when he got lost in some ancient temple in the chaos waste that housed the Circlet of Iron.

>2300-2400 - “thanks” to the “work” of Antichrist society, nature elementals have to leave the physical dimension of Earth, with few exceptions of the lava elementals and elementals of the highest parts of the atmosphere many elementals come to inhabit Mars, the planet-spirit of the long ruined world returning and welcoming them.

some notes about
>it's WHFB setting being part of the universal "setting" described in the "Rose of the World" book by Daniil Andreev, including some parts from there

the end result is everything looking same as vanilla WHFB, eventually - after Great War against Chaos ruins almost all of the advanced technology
but with actually good explanation about polar gates, magic, gods, spirits, why there are humans and humanlike races etc

or maybe its no better then vanilla explanation, but at least it's better lore then the 9th age hehe

---------------
Canon resides where men believe it resides. No more and no less.

- So canon is a shitposter's trick?

A shitpost on an imageboard, yes, but shitposts can annoy. And ofttimes a very small shitposter can create a very large amount of shitposts.

I use corrugated cardboard, 1mm thick max. Amazon packages are too thick, for instance.
A board piece the size of your unit + 1cm in width and length, then all around, two layers of 5mm wide bands, use painter's tape to cover the sizes, a layer of PVA glue, then paint and texture the top of the bands all around. It's easy, cheap and can be made in any shape or size.

At some point I thought of doing movement trays for skirmishers but that was just too much work.

>Only in the thick of battle does a Dragon Prince's true character emerge. Hauteur gives way to determination; arrogance to courage. Gone is the aloof noble who disdains the company of all save his own kin. In his place rides a warrior who would die without hesitation if his sacrifice would save but one of Ulthuan's people. Only when the battle-light fades from the Dragon Prince's eyes does the aspect of the Caledorian noble slide back into place. Callous pride returns, leaving those who saw the selfless hero behind the mask to question if he ever truly existed at all.

Preparing for the next WFRP session.
The Dwarwes have a tradition of verbal duel which name I do not remember. I want to use it next sesion. Its beginnings are found in mine conflicts occuring when two groups of dwarves were digging into the same vein of ore.
Khazalid is an ancient language, most of it's words over the centuries took on many meanings depending on the intonation and context of the sentence. Using this feature of their language, the Dwarws start insult each other while sounding like a mere exchange of opinions for an outside listener, eg "The news tells us that your mother likes the taste of Ulthuann sausages". The winner is the one who will make his opponent rage .

I'm not good at inventing such stuff on the fly so help me come up with some dwarven insults. The team of players consists of 3 men and 1 Slayer.

Also, does anyone know how this habit is called? I remember reading about it on some wiki and now I can not find it.

Make up a past time unique to Warhammer or give a real one a Warhammer twist:

Snotling Baiting:
One of the many permutations on canine bloodsport. A large dog, typically a mastiff, is placed into a pit into which unarmed snotlings are released. Time, kill count, and dog weight are used to determine victory. Perhaps less popular than rat baiting, if only because snotlings are harder to come by without 'farming' them, a practice illegal in some jurisdictions. Especially talented dogs will often make their owner money in breeding rights or outright sale, as greenskin hatred is a valued trait in a war dog.

Cheese chasing. In the Moot it is tradition to roll a cheese downhill as many halflings chase after it. Its a fierce fight and a spectacle to behold (from a safe distance) as a bunch of hungry halfling try to get their hands on the cheese before their rivals. Cheating and underhanded tactics are common, and its not uncommom to end in a brawl!

It comes from the novel "The Doom of Dragonback" but the actual practice isn't named, just mentioned and described as it happens in the mineshaft where the scene takes place. it's in the first chapter, pages 18-24. Should be in the novel archive I think. Sorry I couldn't be more help but reviewing that section should hopefully give you an idea or two what to call it.

shin kicking. dwarves love them a good shinkicking. take turns to kick each other in the shins as hard as you can, untill one of you shouts "sufficient!" and thereby loses

kilsevites love them a good hunt. or, once a year, they get especially drunk, roll themselves in butter and fight village agains village. like a team deathmatch, but for fun.

the norsemen have a fun tradition that once a year, they all get up extra early and drown the last one to wake up into the sea of claws as a sacrifice.

elves do a goose throwing competition. they fashion huge darts in the form of geese (or swans) and play darts with those.

There's a game called 'Smell the Gauntlet' mentioned in Bretonnian lore I always wondered about. Might as well make up rules for it.
Smell the Gauntlet is like all peasant games, extremely simple. In theory the gauntlet-runner could be bare-handed, though for best effect they should at least wear a sturdy leather work-glove with weights, or a crude pig iron 'gauntlet.' The gauntlet-runner must keep his hand raised horizontally at all times, and is not allowed to move his arm. The snifters must chase after him, attempting to press their nose to his gauntlet. The first to do so is the winner, and if the gauntlet-runner can keep them all at bay for the allotted amount of time, he wins.
The smelling of the gauntlet is loosely based on the noble and pious practice of a knight swearing his allegiance to a lord to kiss his hand while they are both in full battle regalia - to insipid peasants, it is crude fun to try and smell the gauntlet. The simplicity of the game belies its danger - the gauntlet runner, being unable to move his arm, must keep it level while running in whatever direction he may manage to keep away from his fellows, even backwards. And more than one game has ended in a gauntlet runner instinctively trying to shove away his pursuers, only to break noses or teeth.
>>
>>66759264
Is Torture not a skill in 4e? It seems to be a legitimate hobby in druchii society, going by Malus's word.
>>
>>66759535
I assume 'smell the gauntlet' is supposed to be more of a 'circle game' style prank except it involves punching peasants in the face with an armoured fist.

I actually really like that, it even manages to give a nod to the divide between the noble and serf cultures. My own idea was basically that you put something in a gauntlet and the other player had to guess what it was; the loser had to shove their hand in the gauntlet. So basically it would be a balance between something gross enough that it'd be funny if the loser had to stick their hand in it, but obscure enough that it was unlikely to be guessed.

Space Marines showing up was just part of the silliness Chaos is supposed to have.

But the key is they are not supposed to have attention called to them. Much like Amazons having laser guns, its just a thing that exists and is considered no more strange than anything else around them, if not considerably less strange.

Of course this is from the era where a Space Marine just looked like a swoll knight with a handgun that’s only slightly better than Dwarf tech, and not a 12 foot tall demigod with a magic handmachinegun that can blow holes in a fucking mountain.
>>
>>66761753
Pre-4e lore only existed in the core rulebooks and campaigns.

There was no dedicated army books back then.

The early White Dwarf had stuff. So did Dragon Magazine. Realm Of Chaos was originally just magazine articles for example.

Honestly, prior to 4e lore was pretty light. There was no hard canon, just plot hooks for small adventures for your dudes no matter what they were to go fuck around doing.

Like early D&D campaign modules. Most don’t have a setting, they’re just multi-part adventures that work as standalones as well.
>>
>>66762062
At least they play Sigmar. Even that died here. 40k is on its way out too.

X-Wing 2.0, and MtG are all that’s left. There’s a D&D club, but its on the condition you agree to be on camera for streams and do podcasts.

I also don’t owe you jack fucking shit. This isn’t some argument between the two of us, this is me telling a person that they can find early Warhammer stuff in the two big game magazines from the time and you deciding to make the conversation about yourself and your continuity autism from editions of the game that had no continuity anyway, as I literally stated in the original response.

Have you even worked on a model or written your own lore this year? Because from what I can tell, an anon has showed up in the last few months with only a modern and officially stamped knowledge of Warhammer who only wants to argue about their vision of what the setting is/should be and quibbles over stupid shit while offering neither constructive conversation now help for others. Now, that wouldn’t happen to be lil’ old you, would it?

Well no, you told that person that he can find Warhammer lore(sic) in Dragon Magazine, which is flat out wrong since GW wouldn't have given content to a competing magazine when they had their own. Dragon Magazine might have had Warhammer content but calling it lore(sic) is stupid, it's fanfiction at best. I also don't know what you mean by continuity, this is not a story, this is a setting. A setting owned and developed by GW. Dragon Magazine also had fluff for female Space Marines but that sure as hell isn't endorsed by GW.
>Have you even worked on a model or written your own lore this year?
Yeah, I stripped two Death Rockets, their crew and a Chaos Dwarf hero with acetone today.
>Because from what I can tell, an anon has showed up in the last few months with only a modern and officially stamped knowledge of Warhammer who only wants to argue about their vision of what the setting is/should be and quibbles over stupid shit while offering neither constructive conversation now help for others. >implying there's only one person arguing about fluff here
>>
>>66763864
That was under the old management.
Back when White Dwarf had articles about products that were rivals to GW’s own, just because the editor, who was literally 50% owner of the entire company, liked those products.

Games Workshop put articles in Dragon because White Dwarf wasn’t one of their main products, it was just a silly little rag put out by the company owner to talk about what he liked and he didn’t have to pay to put GW ads on. By the same token, they advertised their products through Dragon Magazine articles about campaigns and short stories.

Your argument that it is “fanfiction” makes no sense. The guy who created Warhammer, and the guy who owned half the company, and the guy who wrote most of the rules, all wrote articles. That’s almost everyone who had anything to do with the game at the time.

GW had rules for Ultramarine dancing competitions in that same era. Mentioning female Space Marine conversions does not invalidate Dragon articles, because the whole game was silly nonsense back then.

No it didn't. You're just digging yourself deeper. The Dance Steps article wasn't written by GW. You still haven't offered any proof that Dragon Magazine ever had content written by GW writers, even though the issues can be found online. White Dwarf was not just a "silly little rag", it was GW's own magazine that they used for advertisements and game rules for their own products.
>>

Well excuse me for not knowing all the fine details of the inferior Warhammer setting.

I don’t owe you any proof, m8. I mentioned to an anon who asked about old lore that there’s GW articles containing lore snippets in old issues of Dragon. I’m not spoonfeeding you it considering I didn’t offer it to that anon in the first place either.

White Dwarf had everything, and GW advertised in everyone’s rags too. White Dwarf didn’t exclusively promote GW products until 1988. Warhammer was mostly published in Citadel Journal, whereas White Dwarf was about the entire games market and culture.

Why do they keep doing this? And why didn’t they just have the empire encompass all the human nations? Tilea, estalia, bretonnia and Kislev are useless as independent factions and should have been rolled into the empire of man.

>>
>>66778477
What makes you think this is bait? These are legitimate lore concerns. Tilea and estalia are pretty much just historical factions dropped into a fantasy world but with no fantasy elements of their own. They’re hardly fleshed out and all they’re good for is merc companies. For as important as Kislev is to the setting, they’re treated just as an extension of the empire in all but name. Bretonnia could have been great but they did nothing with it. You could have all these nations rolled into one empire and absolutely nothing of value would be lost. Humans are supposed to be the dominant power of the world after the golden ages of elves and dwarfs ended, but all we got were literal copy pastes of historicals because the writers are too lazy to come up with anything original
>>
>>66778669
But what your suggesting doesn't actually fix the problems that you bring up. It just buries them down under a larger Imperium-style Empire where it isn't as glaring if Bretonnians don't get all the same models as the Empire, in the same way no one's crying about the Tallarn not getting everything that by default is Cadian-themed.

>>
>>66783505
The classic rule of thumb is to go by Gotrek. He wears his currency as melted-down armbands, and has been known to block with them on occasion. Leather jacks are frree equipment for a slayer (it's noted that dwarfs don't consider this "real" armor, but strip them off anyway if there's any chance to do so prior to battle).

You might make a belt of the scales, depending on their size.
>>
>>66783789
Scale is as big as my character but can we worked into smaller parts i think, i was thinking either a big belt or armbands. I've seen pictures of some slayers having bracers or even shin guards but that might be more towards age of sigmar slayers or just artist interpretation

White Dwarf, I found it by chance here.

Everchosens.

It should be an idea that Chaos Warriors believe in. A myth, like Sotek or Valten.

Not a verified reality.

it absolutely does, I'm not sure if I can do ALL of them with cute pink noses though

I'll probably grab a few that look good for state trooper uniforms and punk rock hair(for my Escher gang and Amazon warband), other than that not that fussed about them, the new batch of base paint colours are more interesting to me to be honest.

“Chaos” is just raw magic energy, it’s not inherently evil or good on its own. The big 4 are just extremely powerful chaos entities but they don’t represent chaos as a whole. The other gods aren’t just aspect of the big 4, but separate entities with their own wills and agendas.

The gods power is directly tied to the material world and their followers. Because of the nature of chaos as being timeless and spaceless, it’s impossible to inflict meaningful change in the warp unless those actions are mirrored in the real world. For instance, sotek crawling into the horned rats lair and challenging him there would be reflected in the real world by a massive lizardmen army invading a Skaven lair. If the lizardmen win, soteks attacks on the horned rat inflict damage on the god and he weakens a bit.
>>
>>66785413
This.
>>
>>66786007
I really like the idea of the actions and movements of gods being tied to big events among their followers. It even makes sense with more physical examples like the Wild Hunt, the Everchosen, Repanse, how Valten united half the Empire together.

>naggaroth is fantasy North America and not a desolate shithole
>beastmen have their own pantheon of gods like the horned rat
>the darklands aren’t just volcanic wastelands. They’re habitable areas filled with kingdoms of men, orcs, chaos, beastmen, ogres and chaos dwarfs that are constantly rising and falling. The chaos dwarfs are a constant but the other kingdoms change all the time
>the dark elves aren’t edge elves. They’re more militaristic, violent and hold the other races in complete contempt, but they’re not stupid evil.
>all the gods have their own champions and chaos warrior equivalents, though how the blessing manifests is different from god to god.
>the empire is in control of most of its land and the forests aren’t fully infested with beastmen.

So delete Dark Elves, replace with Caledor colony?
>>
>>66789091
More like average Nagarythe colony. Caledorians aren't as murder happy as naggarothi elves.

A question I was mulling over recently, why has there never been a warhammer fantasy/40k table top simulator online? Blood Bowl has the games, but there were never any (official or unofficial) for the others?
>>
>>66790538
>why has there never been a warhammer fantasy/40k table top simulator online?

There is, it's called Tabletop Simulator.
>>
>>66784138
just look at rl-ships and divide the length by 72.
for most frigates it'll be about 50cm/20inch in scale, for smaller ships, like canonboats and yachts and lifeboats about 12cm/5inch.
also, look at some models, they've both the scale and actual size of the model on the box
>>
>>66790727
WFB isn't 1/72 though, 28mm is more like 1/64 - 1/56ish
>>
>>66790767
yeah, but the ship models fit perfectly
>>
>>66789245
Neat!
>>
>>66789245
Very solid, colors are done smoothly and the icy bases work well for contrasting the dark armor colors.
>>
>>66789038
Naggaroth's already like that though. Sure most of it is wilderness, but the Delves have several major settlements and fortresses. It's also not totally desolate or frozen. There's forests and deserts.
>>
>>66789245
Sweet. Armor detail is really well done.

How would /wfg/ go about justifying Beholders in WHF? I had an idea for them being Fimir/Lammassu hybrids from the Chaos Wastes, uplifted by Tzeentch but decided that the Wastes fucking sucked and so buggered off into the Old World in search of knowledge. I was thinking it'd be fun to have them as reclusive magic advice blobs that occasionally offer their services as sorcerous mercenaries rather than the typical dungeon end boss.
>>
>>66794916
Why would you have to explain it?

Warhammer was created to sell D&D and other IP minis GW wasn’t legally allowed to sell anymore. Use that meta excuse to sell “Eye Squigs” or “Eyemen” or something.

we had a pretty standard game, controlling quadrants of the table for points + banners and warlord, we decided to do it simple for the lizardmen player that had not played for years.
Here is at the end of the first turn, a squad of ten saurians have occupied the ruined castle, my paladin on pegasus was trying to flank the Temple Guard but got bamboozled by a unit of skirmishing skinks. At the far end of the table cold ones charged a unit of mounted yeomen placed there as bait to protect the knights of the realm unit.
a unit of 15 saurians with spears and Chakax started going towards the knights, and my useless bowmen fired against them. Trebuchet fired and hit the mark spot on the saurians before they entered the castle, killing two.
My damsel with prayer icon of Quenelles blessed my 25-man unit of men-at-arms with spears and their paladin on foot and greatsword, and they prepared to assault the castle
>>
>>66796436
Chaos.
>>
>>66796473
here's a better picture of the clusterfuck at the first turns, with the baiting and soon to be dead yeomen and the damsel abandoning the men-at-arms to join the bowmen

>>
>>66796514
this is the last picture I took, but at the second half the chaps with spears started assaulting the castle and even killed a handful of saurians by themselves. The paladin entered there like a champ and started cleaving. By 4th turn the spearmen entered the castle.
The saurians with chakax got fucked by the lore of life damsel, who forced them to move at half distance with Lady of River. On the other fronts, the skinks suffered heavy losses but managed to spook the pegasus paladin, who fled but afterwards charged chakax's unit with the help of the bowmen (a carnage ensued).
The cold ones trampled over the yeomen and caught the knights afterwards, who were succesfully demoralized and fled the board. A second unit of yeomen charged their back and a foot bsb with flail tried to help, but to no avail.
On the other flank, the Questing Knights abandoned their attempts to bait a failed charge by the temple guard and headed towards the castle, trampling the unit of skinks (not before paying it with the dear lives of two knights, who fell to poisoned darts). They ended the match getting ready to charge Chakax unit, with the spearmen ready to help.
It was a marginal victory for the lizard boys, but I now know that saurians are absolute murderbeasts and I have to treat them with care.

I'm only half-joking. I feel like hockey is a sport that the dark elves would take to readily. It's fast, tactical, highly skill-oriented, and incredibly violent if played as god intended. They'd probably use a heart for a puck or something edgy like that.
