>Vieira has had some decent performances (e.g. Brentford away, Wolves away, second half against Oxford).
Lokonga had good performances but he's still shit overall. Like Vieira.
>He doesn't quite drag everyone else down
Yes he does. The midfield was nonexistent against Sporting. He played against Bournemouth too and look how much of a struggle that was. We concede heaps of chances with him in midfield and have no control over the ball. With Odegaard =it's a night and day difference. Way more possession/ball control and an actual solid midfield.
>>
>>130061237
As was said previously, Odegaard and Partey cannot both be off the pitch at the same time. In order for Vieira to be decent, he has to be playing with one of Partey/Odegaard. Same can be said for Jorginho.
>>
You lot deserve this
>>
>>130061255
Jorginho is an elite DM. Vieira is championship quality.
>>
>>130061270
I’ve been a Vieira defender, but it’s hard to excuse his performance against a Portuguese team. No excuses anymore for the thin man.
>>
>>130061237
>Lokonga had good performances
No he didn't. He had some passable performances when we need to play him in a pinch but he's not had a single "good" performance this season. Obviously Odegaard is much better than Vieira, but I don't think anyone claimed otherwise.

Bad day for Martinelli, missed penalty and now he'll lose his best mate. Because there's no way Arteta didn't tell Edu to find him athletic AM this summer after this game. Euro miss made Saka into penalty monster, Martinelli has mentality to do the same. I hope Ramsdale has mentality to start training penalties non stop after every training.

>>
Really makes you realize Liverpool's achievement of 4 finals last year. And also explains their current season, you just can't walk it off. 2 strong teams in 1 squad is not sustainable, strong first 11 who can play each 3 days is the only way to pull it off, but then the next season team just dies.
>>
The game was pure chaos. Really showcased that Ode can dictate the tempo.

Rambo is our boy and all but you have to put criticism when its needed, he trailed back so poorly and slowly during that first goal, let alone his miss positioning in the first place.
And those pens were so painful to watch, imagine if that was in the UCL...,he really needs some good work on his shotstopping to become a more complete gk. But i still believe in him cuz he saved us in that bournmouth game and countless others.

Yesterday match was ugly but hopefully its not and indicator of our future in the UCL in the coming years, probably most arse fans are starving for a european trophy and even though i think we could've certainely played this match better, especially since it was in the EMIRATES, maybe it is actually good that we get out now rather than later in may when fixtures are gonna be deciding of the prem.

Negatives

Positives
>despite being dominated, we only conceded from a freak goal
>no fixture congestion, can focus on one competition
Arteta has to win the league now, no excuses. I also fear that he'll end up like Wenger, Conte etc We need someone that knows how to win in Europe.
>>
To be honest I am a bit disappointed by the result, but hey, it happens
Every team has had their share of weird and seemingly inexplicable eliminations in Europe
As long as we come back against Palace I won't care all that much
>>
>>130063109
I would dispute the "dominated at home", we were the better side in the first half, last 15 minutes and the entirety of extra time. Yeah, that period of time between the 50th and the 75th minute was embarrassingly bad, but still
>>
I hate how Vieira has displaced ESR, who should have started. I still believe he will find his form. He should be loaned out in a relegation club that will start him every time, missing preseason set him up for failure.
>>

I've been defending Vieira in these threads for months, but ngl his performances have been a bit shocking as of late
Completely invisible, and he should know how to play against Sporting as he'd faced them many times before

If I'm being honest Lisbon were just the better team.
Idk how but they managed to disrupt our flow and made the game scrappy.
I thought it was some one off in the first leg, but the fact that it happened twice shows it was something Lisbon was doing deliberately.

It will be very concerning if prem teams pick up on these tactics

Our team is decent or good. Very few really good players and they are inconsistent. Arteta is doing wonders with a team that would at best end 3rd in the league (but could end 6th without shocking anyone but Arsenal fans that have higher expectations).

i, for one, i am happy this team is out europa league
>>
Seems to me like the players let Arteta down. They didn't seem up for the game at all. He put out a strong side, clearly intent on winning, but it seems like they only have eyes on the league. I reckon Arteta has got to be seething this morning.

>Vieira
Guy has an Ozil-esque look and feel about him, but minus Ozil's potential to amazing if he felt like putting down the Fortnight controller.

There were retards in the last thread suggesting that Arteta would have been more successful in europe than Wenger if he had the same players.

You need to apologise to Arsene.

If Man City get to the Champions League semi-final and the FA Cup semi-final they will have 16 games in three competitions from 1st April to 28th May. That's a game every three and a half days.

It’s frustrating to play the B team, wait until we’re losing, then sub in the A team to chase the game. It’s clear that none of the starters are interested in Europa. Arteta should’ve just played the B team all the way through and let them lose in 90 minutes.
>>
>>130072666
It seems like Arteta has standards that he's not willing to compromise on, to the detriment of our cup runs. He won that first FA Cup by any means necessary, but since then he's been willing to accept losses if it means the players have to learn from a defeat.
>>
>>130072786
What’s there to learn from this defeat? You can’t play a midfield of Xhaka-Jorgi-Viera and expect to win?

It’s like Arteta wants to be knocked out of these competitions on purpose, which I support, but he wants the team to expend as much effort as possible in the loss.
>>
>>130072908
If you don't play at 100% then you don't deserve to win. And it tells the squad players that they can't expect guaranteed playing time in cup competitions if they don't maintain the desired levels in training and on the pitch. It also signals to the board that we need more squad depth to truly be an top club.
>>
>>130072908
There's literally nothing to learn. If sporting were in the PL they get steamrolled like Fulham. Coach and players have other priorities. Move on

It's not just top 4 here. They're within touching distance of the PL trophy for the first time in decades. Would be a huge disservice to a generation of fans to blow it all on a Europa

Plus UCL is phase 4 anyway

What Arsenal haters will never admit is they didn’t even think Arsenal would get top 4 this season. Tired of all the weakmind cope shit I've been seeing. Just accept that our team isn't good enough to compete on multiple fronts yet. We weren't even in Europe least season and only managed to finish 5th. The first team in particular has improved this season and we see where that has led us, but our squad isn't strong enough yet to compete on multiple fronts while rotating. We need reinforcements and more time to get everyone up to snuff, and Arteta has to improve in getting the squad more game time so they can be more comfortable when called upon to start. We are still in the 5 phase plan:

Phase 1: Build an identity of football, stop the rot from spreading
Phase 2: Lay off deadwood, build the base of the team, become competitive in the league again
Phase 3: Reinforce the team, finalize team identity and challenge for the league title again (we are here)
Phase 4: Top up the team and branch out into being competitive in other competitions
Phase 5: Become a powerhouse that wins league titles and challenges for European trophies
>>
>>130081721
I would say that Phase 3 would be:
Reinforce the team, finalize team identity and get into the Champions League (Maybe challenge for one of the lesser titles like League cup, Fa Cup or Europa League)

Us challenging for the league this season feels way ahead of schedule.
>>
>>130081909
We are ahead of schedule, IMHO Arteta's original goal for this season was to get 3rd / 4th and win a cup (League / FA / Europa)
We're still at least 2 years and a couple of signings away from being to challenge on multiple fronts. A lot of our main stars are still very young (Saliba, Martinelli, Saka) or they haven't reached their peak years yet (Gabriel, Odegaard, Jesus, Ramsdale)
If we win the League this year, I expect a dip in form next season and a bounce back the year after that
>>
>>130081721
Here's a simple fix to all this mess.

>2)Get rid of edu the fraud
>3)Get rid of turner, tomiyasu, vieira, holding, xhaka, esr, jorginho, tierney, nelson, lomonga, Tavares, mari, elneny, nketiah, balogun and cedric
>4)Buy a new keeper (maignan, onana and trapp are good options) and make ramsdale number 2
>5)Buy 2 LBs, 2 CBs, 4 midfielders, 2 Wingers and a tall striker
>6)Finally get a new medical staff

Balogun seems like a strong mind personality, curious how he’ll fit when he comes back from loan. I hope the club continues taking advantage of the loan system to produce players. Saliba benefitted last year playing every week in League One. He’ll give us more options to rotate up front

Jesus looked good in his first half cameo, caused chaos with his movement and was creating chances. More game time on Sunday and then the break to get up to speed and I think our attack will go up a level for the run in

He settled into the game, but he kept charging forward to try to challenge Sporting players and his positioning often left big Gabi stranded and having to cover multiple attackers. They've sorted out their spine. Saliba + Gabriel allows them to both play out from the back and have a high line. Partey sitting in front of those two adds a level of athleticism and security that few teams in the league have. Inverted full-backs in Zinchenko and White give them technical and defensive security. Odegaard has started performing to the level everyone expected him to as a teenager. Even Xhaka is performing now that he's playing closer to the opposition goal (like he does for Switzerland) instead of his own goal. Add in effective false 9s like Jesus and Trossard and good one-on-one take-on wingers like Martinelli and Saka and it's a pretty effective team despite the absence of any superstars.
>>
>>130098579
Everyone besides Gabriel and Saliba can play everywhere on the pitch which means nobody can really predict what they're going to do

I guess as long as he doesn’t have a full squad of first team quality players on the bench his system won’t work but Vieria‘s performances have been more than worrying.

>>
>>130102617
Heartbreak? Were people really that invested in europa league? I don't know anyone personally who cares about it other than it being a good opportunity to watch arsenal for cheap. I've been to a few europa games myself and the atmosphere is usually dead and the fans aren't very invested.

>>
>>130102918

>>
>>130103309
For a club of uniteds stature the europa league isn't a big deal. There's no bragging rights behind it so nobody talks about it.
>>
>>130102617
>>130102918
Our backup midfield is atrocious in terms of physicality. A midfield 3 of Jorginho, Xhaka, Vieira would get overrun by most Premier League sides playing the way they did on Thursday. They're all good enough on the ball but it's a really bad midfield for dealing with off-the-ball scenarios. Realistically the best way to play with a midfield like that is to sit in a really deep block, have Jorginho-Xhaka as your double-pivot, and look to play exclusively on the counter, but it's quite difficult to coach such a radically different style given how we normally play plus it fucks with the team mindset in a way that could harm us in the league.
>>
On a scale of 1-5, how worried are you about Holdinho potentially starting tomorrow?

We have consistently been one of the strongest teams in the Europa League ever since we have started competing in it. Fans might not care about it because it's a lesser trophy, but that's a plastic mentality.

The 2011 Carling Cup final was also heartbreak because we were the favourites in the final, even if that's an even more tinpot competition than the Europa League. The circumstances are a little different, that was a chance to end a lengthy trophy drought while we now have a good shot at winning the league. But if we fail to win the league then this Europa League elimination is going to be an even bigger blow.

This is an utterly ridiculous viewpoint because there's no guarantee that getting knocked out of the EL makes it easier to win the PL. In fact, it could have the opposite effect. The players might be demoralised by the loss and start playing worse. Or we could get an injury and the player that replaces them plays badly because they're rusty due to a lack of playing time (that they otherwise would have gotten in the Europa League).

Very unprofessional from Conte. Levy gave him money to make signings so I don’t really understand why he’s shitting on him.

Is that from the BBC? Their formation diagrams have been fucked up recently. I assume Pep just played a 4-2-3-1 with KDB and Rodri in midfield.
>>
>>130122203
I should add, presumably what Arteta needs to add is more steroids and painkillers to his players cycle. How the fuck is Pep getting away with playing these guys in literally every game and they’re never injured?

David Seaman was beaten by a much worse blooter and he was one of the best keepers this country has seen. Ramsdale is young and (I hope) hasa great future ahead.
that said why do so many English keepers seem to have the Joe Hart over excited nervousness about them? Ramsdale has it occasionally

I disagree that the title race is over after today. Even 8 points behind, City are still in the race. However, if they lose to Liverpool on April 1st, then I would say that’s the end of the “title race”. Shan’t get too cocky before then.
>>
>>130136690
He's already signed, they're just delaying the announcement just incase we choke the league and they need to put out some "good news" to help fans cope.
>>
>>130137529
so if he signed a new one it wouldn't take effect until mid 2025? there's no way

>>130138604
City have a game in hand and they still play us at the Etihad. That means even if we beat Palace & Leeds and they lose to Liverpool, the gap would effectively be 8 points still. 3 losses and the dream would be dead.

City away from home this season
>1 away win v PL top 9 (Arsenal)
>2-0 loss v Southampton to LC
>3-1 loss v Liverpool in CS
>1 win in 4 in the CL
>1 win v Bristol in the FA Cup

City's away form has been horrible this season and Arsenal still got beat at home by them, that's my only cause for concern for the title

Still got the choker mentality when it comes to the crunch matches, like losing EL at the first hurdle

Need a win at either Anfield or the Etihad to make me believe
>>
>>130145710
winning over city would be immense for us
let's be realistic here and say we lose against city at the ethiad, that would only gives us a 2 point gap, which means that we can't afford to lose a single match unless city does too. Winning over city would increase the gap by 3 points AND knock out our hardest game left.
>>
Arsenal 66pts
Man City 61pts

Arsenal fixtures
Home
Brighton, Chelsea, Palace, Wolves, Leeds, Southampton
18/18 should be the aim, 16/18 is likely based on prior form

Away
City, Newcastle, Liverpool, Forrest, West Ham
9/15 (losses to City & Liverpool) seems like a best case scenario. I can see arsenal dropping points to Newcastle & Forest though

Gives Arsenal 91 pts

Man City fixtures
Home
Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Leeds, Leicester, West Ham
Despite Liverpool's awful away from i think City get 16/18pts here as well

Away
Brighton, Brentford, Fulham, Everton, Southampton.
10/15 i think, City probably get knocked out by Bayern which frees up their schedule but Brighton/Brentford away is tough

Gives City 87 pts

tldr; shit is tight so arsenal need to atleast draw anfield/etihad or be near perfect

I usually don't much care, 3 points are 3 points, but today I demand a solid win. With a clean sheet too.
And it would be good to not see Saka play - give him some rest FFS. Could Holdini play RB? Kiwior in the mid then. If not, start White since he's not going with the NT so he'll get some rest as well.
Anyway, a solid win today is a must.

>>130148796
for the media and trolls ? yes
sensible answer though, no, no one expected Arsenal to even be close to being first at this stage of the season, not even in their wildest dreams.
The team is massively over performing all while having plenty of injuries (in spite what a bald fraud thinks), the refs being total retards (could have easily been more than 11-14 points ahead right now instead of 5) AND a winter WC.
The bench being good is also a meme and the club still needs at least 2-3 good new players in the summer to even start thinking about taking the other competitions serious.
>>
>>130146887
It’s because they need to show the West Ham game against City so that they meet the quota for West Ham games for the season. You know, the West Ham game that is postponed…
>>
Holding in for Saliba, Trossard starts over Jesus
>>
>>130148796
No. A choke would be us winning everything (including Liverpool and Man City) and then go on and lose the last four games and end 2nd in the league.

Losing against Man City at Etihad and Liverpool at Anfield is expected. That can never be a choke.

>>
>this ref

Damn, commentator just mentioned Gabriel has as many corner goals as Kane ever since he joined us, with nobody having more goals than those two.

Could be said about literally any PL ref, lmao.

Saka needs a break badly
You just know Soufgate is gonna give him a big role in the international break, better make him well rested or he's gonna drop after the break
>>
zinchenco is so fucking good
>>
just shoot shartinelli, he cut inside and was wide open. why do we always have to be so cute about the buildup?

Why for fucks sake?!

These fuckers better score 3 because we are conceding at least two.
>>
>>130151141
Some broadcasts are so fucking terrible with replays that it's almost laughable. They'll show none of the important bits but show a zoom in of a random player that the commentators aren't even talking about for about 15 seconds straight.
>>
>>130151164
don't know why but there's an obsession these days with letting it play out, then use VAR to disallow it
