Had it confirmed to me that Granit Xhaka was sent off last night for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity. He will therefore miss #AFC’s next 2 games vs Spurs and Liverpool rather than 4. Would’ve been 1 but as this is his second red of the season he misses an extra game.

I am not sure Xhaka should have had a red card.

Jota was not in control of the ball and therefore it is questionable weather Xhaka denied a clear goal scoring opportunity or not.

Xhaka tried to play the ball, had no intention to foul Jota, and there was no serious foul play / violent conduct.

Other teams would have got a yellow card

I'm experiencing pain right now and it's making me super anxious because I don't want to die young or have a heart attack and become paralysed or something.

Not defending them but they're all at it. Leicester are missing only 2 players to covid, the rest are injured or AFCON, they've just cancelled a 2nd game this weekend. Asthma FC had an entire squad of 'false positives' last week which suddenly cleared up at the weekend. The problem is the PL lets it happen, none of this happened during the FA cup where the rules don't allow for covid cancellation.

>>116774794
>He's the best midfielder
Yeah and once upon a time David Luiz was the best defender in the club, doesn't mean he needs to retire here. I hate how this is the go-to for Xhaka apologists, it's not that he's good, it's that everyone else is awful in comparison.

>He's necessary
This is honestly small club mentality. How many more red cards and penalties does he need to get before he becomes unnecessary?
>>
>>116774572
His handle was "vlahovicdusan9" and he had only 14k followers. He will wear a different number in Arsenal so they just decided to create a new account. It will be revealed in Arsenal's twitter announcement.
>>
>>116774956
It's more that he's essential to the tactical system. Without him there's no ball progression or transition. You get what happened against Forest, a missing midfield. It doesn't mean the other players are shit (most of them are but Saka, Ode, ESR, etc are not shit) it just means you need a player like him to have a functioning midfield. And he's good with the ball. He's just shit at defending and too limited all round to be relied on to the extent that we do. That's why I agree the club should get an upgrade, but to cast him out ASAP without a replacement would be insanity. There's nothing 'small club mentality' about it, just an understanding of how tactical systems work. The club clearly wanted to replace him but couldn't last summer. They're looking at replacements already. I don't really know what you want.
>>
>>116775318
>he's good with the ball
He really isn't, sorry, this is what irks me the most about Arsenal fans, settling for mediocrity. It's possible to have a functioning midfield without him, went on a 10 game unbeaten streak without his useless fouls and awful decision making. Don't need his dozen sideways passes to play well, just need to offload him before his value decreases to 3 million. He's nearly 30, he's not going to get any better at this point, it's not like he's going to experience some sort of Pirlo-esque resurgence. He's also notoriously one footed for a midfielder.

>Muh tactical systems
If we can't beat a championship team without Xhaka then the issue is with the coach. Fraudteta likes to play favorites so he'll keep him here for as long as possible unfortunately.

>They're looking at replacements already
Is that why he got a contract extension?

>settling for mediocrity
Everyone wants to replace him and the club are trying to do so. I'm just saying it's dumb to throw him out when without him the midfield is shit.
>went on a 10 game unbeaten streak without his useless fouls and awful decision making
Yeah, all scrappy 1-0 wins and 0-0 draws against bottom half teams. When he came back the team started winning games comprehensively and scoring more goals.
>Don't need his dozen sideways passes to play well
He is statistically the most progressive passer in the team
>just need to offload him before his value decreases to 3 million
Fans like you will complain about why Arsenal are never able to sell players for decent money then demand that decent players are sold for rock bottom prices
>He's also notoriously one footed for a midfielder
This is a valid criticism. I've never pretended that he isn't a limited player.
>If we can't beat a championship team without Xhaka then the issue is with the coach
Maybe. Arteta's game management in that case was poor. But always blaming the coach is a cop out. Lokonga should have played better and it was Patino's first start. We had no midfield in that game and no real alternative options.
>Fraudteta likes to play favorites so he'll keep him here for as long as possible unfortunately.
Is that why he tried to sell him in the summer?
>Is that why he got a contract extension?
They tried to sell him, then gave him a contract extension because a certain fanbase claims they're sick and tired of letting players leave on free transfers. He's perfectly adequate as cover if he stays, and his value is protected if another club comes in for him. Roma offered £10m in the summer which was a joke. I'm glad the club won't be fleeced anymore.
>>
>>116776213
>He's the best passer on the team
Wow he hit a nice through ball against Sunderland, our very own swiss Andrea Pirlo. His passing sucks. Not even top 20 in the league.
>It's dumb to throw him out
And this is that small club mentality I was talking about. Pep booted Ronaldinho out of Barca because he wasn't performing, a player who had won a Ballon D'or only 2 years prior, and over here you're struggling to offload Xhaka cause we "need him"
>Progressive passer
At the end of the season, no one cares about these sorts of dumb statistics.
>Decent players
He's not a decent player. He's bang average and a liability any time he plays.
>Blaming the coach is a cop out
Chelsea got rid of Lampard and went ahead to win the CL the same season with Tuchel.
>Lokonga and Patino
Should be given a chance and if they're not up to it, they can leave too. Xhaka has had 6 years to not be awful.
>Contract extension
He was already packed and gone to Roma, Arteta convinced him to stay.
>£10m in the summer which was a joke
Not even meme'ing, but they were overpaying. And his value is only going to go down in the coming months.

Can you think of any game where Xhaka single-handedly won the game (or a point) for Arsenal?
Because I can think of many occasions where the he single-handedly costs Arsenal the game.
>>
>>116776411
I mean I get your point however the first point isn't very fair given his position
either way he needs to fuck off in the summer
>>
>>116776407
>His passing sucks. Not even top 20 in the league.
Your reply betrays you. You shouldn't be looking for assists or the occasionally flashy ball. It's the passes which are unremarkable to the naked eye but when they don't happen, you can tell something is wrong. He's not a mercurial Pirlo type player, but he is a deep lying playmaker, and the only one we have.
>And this is that small club mentality
It's tactics. Pepe could throw out Ronaldinho because he had Xavi and Iniesta. We have Partey and uhh, Lokonga. I want better for the club and they're pursuing a better midfielder - Bruno or Tielemans hopefully. I want this. But until then, getting rid of Xhaka would harm, not help, the team.
>At the end of the season, no one cares about these sorts of dumb statistics.
You're dumb. It's not a 'statistic'. It's central to how the team gets the ball from defence to attack.
>He's not a decent player. He's bang average and a liability any time he plays.
He's slightly above mediocre. Would you prefer Lokonga, who played so marvelously against Forest?
>Chelsea got rid of Lampard and went ahead to win the CL the same season with Tuchel.
And are now faltering again. They've gone from title challengers to "at least we'll get top 3". You're really comparing apples and oranges though. Chelsea have a different system and club culture.
>Should be given a chance and if they're not up to it, they can leave too. Xhaka has had 6 years to not be awful.
I agree. I'm not arguing for Xhaka to stay indefinitely and for us not to sign anyone new. But both Lokonga and Patino have been awful when played. Yet you weirdly claim Xhaka is worse.
>He was already packed and gone to Roma, Arteta convinced him to stay.
The derisory offer was rightfully rejected. He thought he was off so Arteta had talks with him to get him back in the mindset for staying here.
>Not even meme'ing, but they were overpaying
And you accuse me of having a small club mentality. Lol.

What position is fair? You can play in any position and have a massive contribution to the team, winning the game if you're offensive or at least saving your team from a loss
As you said he's been playing for Arsenal almost 6 years, nothing impressive came out of it
>>
>You shouldn't be looking for assists or the occasionally flashy ball
He's awful at his one job, which is to win back possession and break up attacking plays. That's his primary job. His passes are useless, I cannot stress that enough. He's not Busquets or Xabi Alonso, he's a larper and the club should exile him.
>It's central to how the team gets the ball from defence to attack
It's a dumb cope from Xhaka apologists. That's the only thing he doesn't mess up, kicking the ball forward, he can't dribble, he has no legs, and he's awful defensively.

Back to the topic of Fraudteta, why did he offload Ainsley to Roma, did he not foresee this situation? This situation is 100% on the coach.

>Chelsea
Them "faltering" is that they aren't going to win the league, a year ago they were under us. Small club mentality dictates you stick with awful players and managers cause you "have no other choice"

>Xhaka is worse
I'm saying Xhaka is awful and only looks good because his competition is academy players. You're trying to call him a decent player when he isn't even that.

He's not worth 10 million. No club in their right mind would pay that much for him

Ah Xhaka, too good to be dropped, too bad to be loved. Many red cards and conciliatory redemptive performances can be yours if you kneel to the midfield Vermaelen. (And pay more than the 15 mil it would cost to buy a replacement you Roman Jews)

On a more serious note boys he is a flawed player but him and Partey are the best midfield pairing at the club at the moment. (I will forever be salty at Torreira) You can acknowledge his worth and his flaws at the same time. At this point his "X-Days-Since-Bad-Defensive-Tackle" ought to be an actual counter somewhere. Besides its clear Arteta knows that despite his positive qualities and "leadership" within the dressing room that he's a symptomatic of a patchwork midfield that's been a problem since Cazorla/Coquelin/Ramsey left since he tried to ship him out last summer and is targeting midfield replacements. If he would just pull the trigger on another midfield wonderkid and someone like Bruno G (Tonali/Florentino Luis/Neves/Insert Random DLP/BWM here) then I honestly wouldn't mind forgoing a striker for the next year or two. Tbh I would much rather he take a punt on 2 young players for each position and double down on the "process" rather than spunk 70 mil for a single striker who is indifferent with a radioactive agent.
>>
>retards itt and on twatter still making excuses fraudulent midfielder that's been stealing a living for 6 years at the club

EDU YOU FRAUD

I see we are still talking about Xhaka. He is not very good at the moment. Conceding one penalty and one red card in 2 games (statistically he makes on of these every 30 games).

He has not been very good this season. 2 reds and 1 penalty conceded, missed a lot of games through injury. I also think he is sloppier with his passing nowadays (although statistics show he is just slightly worse).

What we can't blame him for is losing possession. Among the playing midfielders (Partey and Lokonga) Xhaka loses possession the least. While still being the most aggressive and progressive passer.

I'm not gonna argue that he could play in almost any of the top teams like I did last year (when he was a beast in midfield). His form suggests otherwise. But I am still having trouble seeing who can realistically replace him or upgrade him if Arteta wants to play the football Arsenal play today. Maybe the Liverpool game showed that we can play without midfielders (Lokonga didn't do anything he was just being a body in a position to cover spaces). The Forest game showed the opposite (that we really need to have midfielders to play any kind of football).
>>
>>116779165
There were rumours in the summer for Ruben Neves but not anymore. I think he is a direct upgrade on Xhaka along with similar skillset.
>>

Test
>>
>>116779223
He might be. When I've watched Wolves (only been a few times this season) Neves seems to be similar. Better at some things but worse at others.

Looking at the stats (I know it doesn't give the whole picture) they are similar in defending. Xhaka gets dribbled past way less (1 time per game compared to 2 for Neves) but Neves is a slightly better tackler (tackles won per game). Passing I would say Xhaka wins (more completed passes %, progressive passes). Neves wins a few headers (44%) and Xhaka is very good at winning them for a midfielder (58%). Also remember that this is stats from, what I take as, very bad form Xhaka.
>>
>>116779303
Couldn't be much worse than Partey or Lokonga you mean. You know they are gonna get dropped before Xhaka (unless Partey decides to continue play like he did against City)
>>
>>116779637

>>
>>116779662

>>116779889
You are right. I assumed it was obvious that Lokonga doesn't bring anything except tackling ability (when he is actually in place for a tackle which happens rarely).
Xhaka has gotten one proper red card this season and one that is a red for him but not for other players (that didn't affect the game at all). He also conceded a penalty that was weirdly judged that led to 1-1 and didn't ruin Arsenals game. Lokonga has been given the ball away 5 or 6 times in dangerous areas and when he doesn't he plays the ball sideways or back leaving our only attacking play to long balls from defenders or winning it back high up the pitch.
>>
>>116779960

I don't know what happened to Tierney. He played with such passion and looked happy in the beginning. >It was back in August, with the transfer deadline looming, that Arsenal began to think seriously about signing Barcelona’s promising 22-year-old right-back Emerson Royal. Talks were at an advanced stage and the club’s technical director, Edu, had already got in touch with the player to establish a relationship. But there was a stumbling block. Mikel Arteta, the Arsenal manager, had doubts.

>Never mind that the analytics department had run the numbers and given Royal their stamp of approval. Never mind that the club were bottom of the Premier League table, the fans were in uproar and time was running out to sign a right-back. Never mind the fact that if Arsenal passed up the chance to sign Royal, he would almost certainly join Tottenham instead.

>Arteta was not convinced, and so Arsenal pulled the plug. Meanwhile Tottenham, scenting an opportunity to pull off an audacious deadline-day coup over their rivals, swooped in with a bid of about £26m, a sum which – quoting the Telegraph – “sources claim Barcelona still cannot believe Spurs offered to pay”. No matter. Tottenham had won the battle Royal, along with all of its associated headlines and bragging rights.

Not like Reguilón and Royal are any better. The only downsides I can see about not playing Tottenham this weekend is that Son and any potential signings could play. There are way more positives to push the game ahead for Arsenal. Being able to bring at least 13 players to the game is one of them.

>We regret to announce that Sunday’s north London derby against Arsenal has been postponed.

>This follows an application from Arsenal to the Premier League on the basis of a combination of COVID, existing and recent injuries and players on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations.

>We are extremely surprised that this application has been approved.

>We ourselves were disqualified from the European Conference League after a significant number of COVID cases meant we needed to reschedule a fixture and our application to move our Leicester fixture was not approved - only for it to be subsequently postponed when Leicester applied.

>The original intention of the guidance - here - was to deal with player availability directly affected by COVID cases, resulting in depleted squads that when taken together with injuries would result in the club being unable to field a team.

>We do not believe it was the intent to deal with player availability unrelated to COVID.

>We may now be seeing the unintended consequences of this rule.

>It is important to have clarity and consistency on the application of the rule.

Xhaka is Almunia tier and will go down in history as the Mustafi of premier league midfielders. Incidentally Almunia often performed against Spurs and saved some high profile penalties against them, still a calamitous signing and singlehandedly solidified our banter status just like Xhaka. You should revoke your trust for him desu, if you wanna gift him professional dignity at the cost of everything look at Almunia after Paris and see what that experiment looks like. Nothing classy or high iq about it. He doesn’t deserve to start games for Arsenal anymore

I think Xhaka is more like Szczesny if you compare him to goalkeepers. Supposed to be the next big thing in his position after many failed attempts. Was always decent but never world class. Eventually he left and had a good spot in a big club somewhere else (this will happen to Xhaka I think).
And I don't think it is a good argument saying Xhaka doesn't deserve to start games for Arsenals anymore. He is still the best midfielder in the club. If he can't start then who will eh?

Recently a lot of players have been doing quite well abroad, especially the more defence oriented ones. You just have to know how to choose them and most definitely don't select blindly based on the goals they score here, those don't count for much.
>>116819091
Gravenberch is a really good controlling midfielder that's great to have in a team such as Arsenal because he's also very competent going forward. He's got a good head on his shoulders, very composed guy. Another player being particularly impressive at the moment is Timber.
>>
>>116820439

City already has too much of a political sentiment with its owners, Serbia needs something neutral to use for its own message. Kroenke being a hands-off owner helps in this case. Also, he's guaranteed to be the main man in the current Arsenal, no guarantees in the current Man City.

From 2016 onwards I believe it was the transfer committee who made the signings hence the stupid moneyball shit like Lucas Perez, Mustafi, etc.

the money was there. he enjoyed being a penny pincher as it allowed him to make excuses for losing to city/chelshit/united. only at the end did he spend big but on the wrong players.
