Quick questions, can the shape be rotated? If for example the 2 top sticks are white it's the same pattern if the 2 right most sticks were white, just rotated. If rotations of patterns don't count as distint patterns then I guess the answer would be 12.

Is rotation allowed, is flipping it allowed? If neither is allowed it's just a trivial 9 choose 2 calculation and not really a suitable IQ test question.

36 if neither flipping nor rotation allowed

12 if exclusively either allowed but this would be weird, I don't understand why you would allow for example rotation but not allow flipping as both are symmetries of the triangle which is why I don't think 12 is ever the correct answer here.

The language is deliberately imprecise in these types of questions just to drive engagement in comment sections, it's not an actual IQ test.

This means there are 9*8 = 72 possible configurations if both white rods are treated discretely. However as i assume each white rod is interchangeable for the sake of patterns, then for each of the configurations of fixed white rod and non-fixed white rod, there is an opposite case of the same pattern appearing with a non fixed white rod and a fixed white rod. This means you divide 72 in half, to get 36.
The answer is therefore 36
