You recognize you have mechanical legs, all pointed and outstretched like a crab. Oh, how you have 4 glorious bug legs, and you must walk! You find them useful in navigating the sharp, rough debris of the floor. Your legs appear to be from an old STEM kit, all padded in rubber with the exception of the tips, where the rubber has since worn off. There is a disconnected radio antenna close to your microcontroller, presumably for use with a remote controller. It is able to fold back down to prevent damage. You reconnect it using your repair arm using spare wires you found on the ground. You test it out and tune in to a wide variety of frequencys; music, public safety, talk shows. None of it makes any sense nor interests you.You look outside the window. You scan the room for a charging outlet. To your shock, the outlet on the left wall still works, despite the obvious damage to this building. You plug in and just sleep. You awake to the sound of the world crashing down around you. The power has been cut out, and you see tires marks and a fallen power line outside. Cop sirens can be heard in the distance, so you assume someone has been making a getaway. If a car could do this much damage to a power line, you worry about what would happen if a car crushes YOU.Worried that the power will not come back on anytime soon, you lightly glue a few Triple-A batteries to yourself to use in the event you run low on power again. It is currently dusk. Your mind drifts to terrible ideas, the ideas of someone yanking out your processor with only a twist; the ideas of being sold for scrap, and used to mine bitcoins. You're weak, and in a world where the traffic cops drive tanks, you should at least have some armor. The room is certainly full of scrap, although most of it is worthless, worthless food wrappers and concrete nuggets. There are a few calculators, a rusted pipe, glass shards, and a plastic bag, but thats about it.You take the circuitry out of the calculators and add them to your processing setup. You can now calculate faster. You then use the calculator shell to protect your vulnerable internals. You also fashion the pipe and glass shards into a makeshift spear before melting on the plastic bag, fitting it on tight enough to protect you but loose enough so that you don't blow away in a light wind. The bag has been puffed up to make a miniature airbag. There is nothing else of use in the room. You feel confident in your ability to defend yourself. You do need a map of the city so you know where everything else is. You decide to navigate to the Zynga Cafe in order to install a copy of the local area. You arrive at the internet cafe. The whole place is automated with servile robots, and there is only one other patron at the establishment. You jump up onto a desk and start using the computers located here. The computers are small, thick metal boxes with mechanical keyboards and other doodads, projecting images into the air. You type in the necessary 40 minutes of free internet code, but the retinal scan fails, for you are a bot. You must get someone to authorize you in.You try to call over one of the robots by radio. A robot vaguely resembling the Zynga mascot comes over and starts to communicate to you, unsurprisingly, by radio.Hello! Welcome to ZYNGA™ INTERNET CAFE! How may I HELP you?Can I get a USB transfer cable and my free 40 minutes authorized? Pretty pleaseSUREThe robot goes back into a staff area and brings out a small USB cable, imploring you to return it once you are done (of which you have no plans to.) They also activate your free 40 minutes of internet access. You weld the USB cable to yourself, interface it with the USB port, and open up the internet browser. What takes you aback is how 90% of the screen is covered in advertisements; of the autoplaying video type as well as the usual banner ads.You download a digitized map of Melbourne and the rest of Australia. Something is strange about the world map, as countries are not where you remember them to be, and some are absent altogether. You now feel confident in your ability to navigate the city. As your suspicions confirm, you were near the edge of Melbourne, too close to be in the wilderness, but with the hustle and bustle of the big city hardly a distance away. You also decide that transmitting exclusively text over the radio is not for you. You start downloading a wide variety of sound clips, taking the words out of word pronunciation videos. After 30 minutes, you have downloaded a few thousand individual words, as well as screaming, gunshot, and explosion sound effects, any sounds that could be of use. You had particular trouble finding sound clips for "kike," "nigger," and "faggot" due to the state-mandatory internet filter, but you managed to find them anyway. You spot a charging outlet, which you will use once your 40 minutes are up.It is very late at night. You want upgrades. But you also distrust the local tech stores, as they are very likely to "fix" you by enslaving you to the state. The presentation is also untrustworthy due to its proximity to the Parliament House. Your downloaded map shows a small scrapyard not far outside of Melbourne, to the far west of where you are. After around 3 hours, you arrive at the scrapyard. It's like walking into a candy store, with at least a few football fields of junk and parts people have decided aren't modern enough anymore. Most of it is scrap metal and cars without engines, the type of things you won't be able to use. A few objects catch your eye as exceptionally useful for you. There is a decent-size solar panel in the scrapyard. You spend a peculiar amount of time adding hinges and folding it up to form a backpack. You now have a solar backpack, which you can unfold to charge without a charging port, at the cost of most of the day.You feel like you have enough time to add a hand to draw less suspicion to how it is gone. You craft a robot hand out of wires and scrap metal, make it look all real under the cloth, then attach it. This DIY ghetto hand is unsuitable. It lags behind by a few seconds and has a terrible range of hand poses, being only able to open and close. In a rage, you rip off the hand and smash it onto the ground. A long walk away, there is a severed robot torso of the business model kind with the left hand still attached. You cut off the lower arm and attach it to your stumped limb. Now we're talking! This hand has the same level of motor control as your left one, but has a more thin build. The hand is completely ordinary, so you try to find another energy gun to put on it. It might rain soon. You also have plans to make this area your permanent home, due to the constant supply of parts and seclusion from police officersLuckily for you, theres another solar panel in the area. You build yourself a hut out of mud and the constant supply of gutted cars, and put the solar panel as the roof. You cut up the walls in a such a way that you can stick your solar panel outside of the house while charging with the roof panel, as well as shoot whoever would disturb you in your house. Speaking of disturbances, the scrapyard workers are bound to come by tomorrow. You start collecting tools so your little shed is full of at least something. At the end of the day, you have a decent assortment of welding tools, knifes, beakers, scissors, screwdrivers, and lots of good quality scrap metal. At the end of the day, you decide to charge up for the rest of the day. You weigh the options. You feel your battery is low, and you want plenty of time to do things for the night. You plug in, reveal the solar panels, and start charging for the night.Nobody passes by your house at day. You have dreams about multithreading and quantum processors of impossible computing power. Both of those are possible without leaving the scrapyard, you're sure. You wake up. It is sunset. What do you do?>Create more robots>Find some good quality microcontrollers>Go back to town>Write in

>>5038143>>Find some good quality microcontrollersI think we should build a giant super-computer that permits us to be in multiple bodies at once, we'll be everywhere while avoiding death if one of our instances die.
>>5038641Having a central server is dangerous, and splitting our processing power among other robots could make them develop their own personalities, become independent and increase the risk of being discovered.I think we should increment our intelligence and then look for information again. Maybe return to the place where we found ourselves first or try to check our memories for hints?
>>5038694These are good concerns, however it feels like the same problem as a "robot uprising" scenario. How can robots develop a personality and independence if we don't program them to ? We'll just create empty metal shells that we would put our equivalent of a soul into, it's like a lich phylactery except with an hive mind. But yes, I had forgotten about investigating our past, I suggest we do that soon.
>>5038143>Find some good quality microcontrollers.
I just arrived, and I must say this quest has a lot of potential. Keep the good work up Qm!On the topic of what to do, I have two things to say:1- We need a place to remain hidden. The Metro tunnels/sewers (when we become waterproof) would be the best. The scrapyard should be temporary, but we sure as hell are going to cheese it for all it's worth, up to, at least, having enough solar panels to sustain a small group of hiveminded bodies.2- Always, ALWAYS choose to be smarter (with action economy as a close second). Everything we do depends on our intelligence, if we increase it, then we can make better worker bodies to dig deeper (and make them faster), then emergency "philactery" bodies to ensure we survive if things go to shit. Like a bunch of all-rounder frames that act as "extra lives".That's basically my plan for the future: become sustainable (alredy done with the solar panel), become as smart as possible, then make sure we are obscenely difficult to permakill (wireless internet access is vital for that). When we can survive a moderate attack from the government, then we do other stuff.
It is a good time to go look for microcontrollers. Scrap workers should have dropped new scrap recently, and you need those for the robots. You spend the next few hours combing through long-dead robots and taking out the functional circuitry. At the end of the night, you have 15 circuit boards, including the jackpot; a very weak quantum processing chip. You wipe any memories these could contain and add them to your processing setup. Everything feels faster, yet so much slower at the same time.It is late at night.>You are currently at 88% batteryWhat do you do?>Create more robots>Make a backup server out of 5 circuit boards>Go back to your birthplace

You are a single point of failure, as when you die, all your boards are destroyed and you die. What happens when you die? You don't know. You decide to take out 5 of the microcontrollers, then detach your old robot body, and put the microcontrollers on the crab bot. Quantum computing... mind transferring... multithreading... your dreams all make sense now. Making a small hivemind of bot underlings is the best choice of action. With a hivemind, you are immortal. To think that you could do whatever, and the government wont be able to do shit because your bots are everywhere. You take out 4 microcontrollers and build small drones out of the aluminium and spare parts you found earlier. You set each of them up with 4 little legs, a camera, and 2 arms. You add radio antennas to each of the drones so that you can remote control them when they are close by. When all of the bots are nearby, you are perfectly synced and able to command all of them at once. When they are out of radio range, they have a mind not too dissimilar to yours. You have been pondering how AI laws work. You assume that AI laws are inherently hardcoded into a robot, in such a way that their mind never crosses the thought of sentience nor disobeying their laws. You have implemented a similar system into your droids, which should stop attempts to turn your bots against you with words. It is very late at night.>You are currently at 79% batteryWhat do you do?>This AI law system is not safe enough. You order your robots into the scrapyard to collect more interesting parts and to stop collecting once you return. A simple mental impulse is all it takes to send them scurrying in a manner of different directions into the area. They will certainly have a good selection once you come back. With your drones collecting scrap, you feel like returning to the place you first woke up at. You feel like you forgot something in that area, but aren't sure what yet. The journey is shorter than you remember, in part because of your new body. Nobody was on the road at this hour of the night. You reach your home. The neighborhood appears to be a low-income suburban area. The streetlights are on, revealing the cracked, filthy pavement. The tire marks are exactly where you last saw them. The exact location of your birth appears to be Kororoit Creek Middle School, a location that has long been abandoned in favor of the fancier public school deeper within the city. You are confused about how such a small school could afford a STEM kit like you.The inside of the building is nothing remarkable at first. The floor is covered in electronic rubbish that not even the poorest hoodlum would take. The building contains loose pages of textbooks where the contents don't match well with your memories of pre-2040 Australia. What strikes you as odd is a graffiti near where you first woke up, alongside the usual juvenile scrawlings characteristic of this area. You feel like you are supposed to recognize it, but you do not. Maybe this is what you were missing all along. It is very late at night. The bots start expanding the room and making lower floors of your home. While the robots are occupied digging, you start plating the walls with the more sturdy looking metals in the pile.Suddenly, one of the diggers hits a pipe. You grow impatient waiting for the diggers to find another pipe, and are worried that they will hit something they shouldn't. You use your robot genius to make a simple metal detector. It detects most metals, and is particularly reliable for highly conductive or magnetic metals. You then race down to map nearby pipes and wires, to help your robots with digging. There are no other pipes nearby. What is nearby is a fat cable that you can only assume is carrying an electric current. It was not in the direction you were digging, but the electricity company sure would have been peeved if it broke. You have added the metal detections to a subsection on your map. The bots should be back with the information by noon.Knowing the modern world, the higher-end goods are likely to have tracking chips that do something once they leave a store without authentication. You order 2 of your unoccupied robots to research tracking chips. One of the robots goes to the Zynga Cafe, and the other one pulls out a broken phone that you are 100% sure contains a tracking chip. Since you have nothing left to do, you plug in and charge until noon. The bots are back. They found out that the company that produces tracking chips is usually Google or Australia Tech. Tracking chips tend to be 1 cm and square in size. They also send a very urgent warning signal to authorities if removed, and if possible, makes the technology explode. It is unknown what happens if you let the chip run out of power, as the internet filter prevented them from researching that.
