There have been so many gear threads now so I'm gonna make another one to help remedy that because that makes sense.

Whats the last thing I can expect from this purchase? It costed me $200 incl shipping.

Raw always looks better unless your camera is so poorly designed raw looks as bad as a jpeg, like sony and fuji. A real computer can process files more effectively. A camera has to do it fast enough to maintain the published framerate on weaker hardware.

It's the other way round
It's easier for the camera to write a jpg because it can simply cut iff excess data it would othewise have to write
If you shoot jpg only, there is no intermediate raw that is used to produce the jpg and then discarded

same here. c1 just beats anything .jpg out of the box. I tried many brands: panasonic, olympus, fuji, snoy and nikon. but nikon + c1 auto levels is just superb to everything else. back to shooting raw only.
sadly c1 are supreme jews with their subscription BS so I bought a perpetual license and got shafted as their recent minor release isn't included in my license kek. guess gonna pirate it in the future.

keep using it and when your body dies buy a used one. unless they bring some alien tech to cheap end bodies the current bodies from 2015+ will keep up with every new release - IQ wise. the frontier currently is at HIGH FPS AI AUTO FOCUS BIRD RECOGNITION ... only boomers with too much money care about that. for everything else you can take a 10yo cam and make fantastic images and even print them on A2.

That's really good, if you want to leave system eventually I would start stacking EF lenses instead of EF-M, which are later adaptable to RF, Sony, etc. anything else really, but you already have a lot covered with those lenses, I can't see a better compact setup for either of those.
What zoom would you like? A wide? 10-18 EF-S. A bird lens? Sigma 150-600 for EF. Both can carry over to any other mirrorless later.
If you have no idea what you want, but you have gas and *need* to spend money on something, get EVF-DC2 for it.

Sometimes I do “street” photography at f10, 1/125 with a prime lens. What’s stopping me from doing this with the kit RF 24-104 f4-7.1? Can’t I just use the same manual settings and just try to keep the lens positioned around the focal length I want?

The only painful part that comes to mind is that your lens will be partially extended at some focal length in the middle of the range and you'll need to find it every time or keep it like that. Zooms are also generally kind of large, but maybe not the f/7.1 one.

Partial repost from last thread. I'm looking at upgrading from an EOS 60D to a mirrorless body and would like to take advantage of black Friday sales if possible. I'm going on an extended holiday to Japan in December and would like to sort my camera out before I go. The 60D has been a good camera but in the past several years has had issues such as the display flipping upside down, and issues with the autofocus slowly attempting to focus on something then failing. This is a notable downside when trying to photograph something (unexpected) happening quickly.

I have these lenses
https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/tamron-18-270mm-3p5-6p3-vc-pzd
https://www.dpreview.com/products/canon/lenses/canon_10-22_3p5-4p5

My primary purpose is travel photography. Most of my photos end up being of landscapes but that's not by preference and mostly due to the camera being bulky and impractical for when wanting to enjoy myself as a tourist walking around. I would like to take more photos of events, crowds of people, subjects etc. I'm not planning on taking photos of sports or other very fast paced things.

Thanks to an anon's recommendation from last thread I'm looking at the R10 and have been looking at the R8 and R7 as well due to this thread
https://community.usa.canon.com/t5/EOS-DSLR-Mirrorless-Cameras/Upgrading-from-My-EOS-60D/td-p/416887

I'm a little put off by the R10 being described as an "entry level content creator" camera, but I also note the R7 only has a handful of features over it. According to
https://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/compared/r7-vs-r10.htm
The biggest ones are increased build quality and in-camera stabilization. I don't know how much that impacts practical photography.

The R8 looks great as well although I'm concerned that my Tamron lens isn't compatible with the FF sensor meaning I would need a new telephoto in addition to the body itself. The cost of this camera is probably at the upper limit of my budget.

cont
>>
>>4254685
I'm not sure if I would benefit properly from a FF body because I have no experience with one, but at the same time I would hate to buy a new body and have it feel functionally the same as my current one. So I please need help choosing between APS-C and FF, and if APS-C, the R7 or R10.

I should also add that I don't care about video as I only use it for stills, and that I'm not 100% confident on my understanding of specs and what they mean in a practical sense.
>>
>>4254685
90D and R7 are both direct upgrade, but really you can commit any camera system since every Fujisonikon at this point has an adapter to EF-S.
>>
>>4254679
The tamron.
A good all in one zoom is worth its weight in gold
>>
>>4254685
IBIS is HUGE for photography and enables you to stop down and lower the ISO for static scenes and held poses. Lacking 5 stop IBIS is basically unforgivable.

Any better has limited practicality and works better for video just because IBIS ratings assume you try to hold still. So 8 stop isn’t 8 stop unless you basically lay down and hold the camera against yourself or are a human statue.

THE major downside is because it’s shifting the film plane the perspective can shift, worse with wide angle lenses, blurring only the periphery, while the center is sharp.
>>
>>4254685
ig please note, R7 has sensor upgrade over R10 as well
both of your lenses are aps-c, not just tampon
>>
i'm thinking of getting one of those lenses that threads onto the filter thread that widens everything to use with my tilt shift lens, talk me into and / or out of this

>>4254733
Is just lack of ibis enough to upgrade?
t.shaky fucker
>>
>>4254959
It depends, IBIS gives ability to just handhold longer exposures by at least a few stops. If you shoot something that moves fast, it doesn't help. If you shoot with tripod, it doesn't help. If you want to shoot a delicious cinematic dimly lit gas station at night, handheld, it's very impressive.
>>
>>4254691
Thank you, but having more to choose from just makes the decision harder. Earlier this year a friend recommended a Fuji X-S10, but other than that I'm not really sure what to go for and feel a little concerned about switching body manufacturers. I know I'll need to buy an adapter either way, however.

Based on this thread
https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4662787
It seems like the X-S10 trades features for a lower weight and price. Based on the OP's breakdown of features I think autofocus of the R7 stands out to me as an important feature.

>>4254733
>>4254737
Thank you anon, I think the R7 is more appealing unless there's something better in a similar price bracket. I can get a body only for $1260 USD ($2100 NZD local currency) at the moment.

>>4254977
This aspect of it seems quite important to me because I would like to carry my camera around more in urban environments - as opposed to walking in the countryside or driving and stopping.
>>
>>4254979
Don't buy a Fuji, they're the worst cameras per dollar spent. The XS-10 trades quality for the X-tranny quirk too.
Get a 90D and enjoy reflex before they take them from us.
>>
>>4254979
Fuji cameras underperform because the CFA is poorly designed. They have 2/3 their stated resolution unless photographing a monochrome target for reason similar to why true monochrome cameras and foveon cameras are higher resolution.

Get the r7, a6700, a used z6, a7iii, something, just avoid fuji, and don’t listen to cANON
>>
>>4255033
>don’t listen to cANON
>repeats what I just said
what did he mean by this?
also the guy has EF lenses and those are best on the 90D
>>
>>4255035
Would they really work that much worse on R7, with IBIS?
>>
>>4255038
They would work better. The 90d is garbage. Doesn’t even do good video. Doesn’t have a superior evf. Worse autofocus. Can’t use superior RF lenses. It sucks.

Better yet buy a sony. I think it’s monster that has the best EF adapter for them.

I have a bunch of lenses. I’m starting to think I stocked up on too many shitters and I should sell them all for one L-series lens. Which of these would you consider the “best” lens I have?

RF 28mm f2.8
RF 35mm f1.8
EF 50mm f1.8 (whatever the latest version is)
EF 85mm f1.8
RF 24-105 f4-7.1
EF 70-300 f4-5.6

I suspect the 35mm is the “best” overall one I have based on it being a $500 prime but I dunno

hellowo everyone, I currently have a d200 and a 50mm 1.8 D, I would like to do more landscape stuff but idk what lens to get, I was thinking of the Nikkor 80-200Mm F2.8 d, I am also broke and an armature so I don't want to fork out like 2k for some crazy telephoto lens, what does /pee/ think?

honestly I don't mind my current lens I just find I cant get enough stuff in the shot and if I go far back everything just is less sharp, maybe I don't need a new lens though and I'm just new and I don't know what I'm doing

hope this is a good thread. so im thinking about a bag, this is what i found and i think its gonna suit me well, where i live its the same price as peak design slingbag 3l but this one has way more space, is more like a backpack and camera is easy to access. anyway, anybody maybe have/had this and can share some opinions and/or recommendations?
>>
>>4255654
Cant give any recommendations but oh my lord get a backpack bag and save your shoulders.
>>
>>4255655
yeah that's my only concern. i won't be carrying a lot of weight but it will be for longer periods of time
>>
>>4255663
I have a lot of packs and slings... if it's not a lot of weight, a sling is better for the reasons you stated as well as comfort; if you live somewhere warm it's easy to move it around so you don't sweat. Just can just slide it up and down every few minutes without thinking to keep air moving over your back.

If you do end up putting a bit more weight in it on occasion, that's what the chest/waist strap is for. You're supposed to cinch it high and let the pack rest on it. Look for one with a strap you can swap from one side to the other as well.

That said, I haven't used anything more than my pockets in years, apart from camping.
>>
>>4255663
If you don't carry a lot of weight, why would you want that huge sling bag? I do have a sling bag that I think was officially supposed to be a fanny pack and it fits a huge ass lens positioned across my body. The pack on your picture should fit two cameras, holy trinity of lenses, a laptop, and a change of clothes. Which at that point it should be a backpack. Also fuck "photographer bags" in particular.

What's your dream minimal system? Where you throw away everything except for a few lenses and a single body, maybe some accessories. I like the idea of just keeping a few primes, one for macro, a wide angle and a super telephoto, maybe:
- a fast 35mm for landscape, low light
- 100mm f2.8 macro and portraits
- 400mm for wildlife
- flash and fold up diffuser
The alternative one I come up with is:
- 35mm for landscape
- 100-400mm with raynox 250 for macro
...but then I think more about portraits and mid-range zooms and I end up where I am now. Do you ever dream up mini kits?

I bought a t2i in 2008 and shot close to 10k pics. I more or less have been on hiatus for a decade from serious shooting, why does it seem like the tech hasn't changed since then? Am I missing something?

Why wouldn't anyone with a good eye that just wants to take pictures buy anything more than a 5D mk2 / mk3 equivalent and save the rest for exceptional lenses?

High iso and autofocus speed and accuracy come to my mind.

A lot of the advances have come in video I think. I don’t shoot any video myself, so it’s lost on me. I guess everyone wants to be a creator these days.

But you’re absolutely right. Cameras are basically figured out, especially for hobbyists and regular working photographers. I bet a lot of people would be served perfectly fine with an older 5d or d700/750.

But so much camera content is trying to sell shit. The companies need to sell more stuff every quarter and the hype train must ride.

There’s some truth to the trolly “let me guess, you need more” meme. Lots of great images were made with equipment far worse than what was available ten years ago. Just get out and shoot and have fun. If you need more, you’ll know it.

Other than >>4255966 the industry went down the mirrorless path for the sake of automation - the sensor is now responsible for providing a computer with full time info about wtf is happening in front of the camera, pdaf sensors have moved onto the same chip (and lost their IR assist light compatibility), so camera can automatically figure out what the subject is, where its eye is, and is able to track focus in real time.
>>
>>4255966
Mirrorless is much more convenient to travel with and dslr OVFs are the worst between modern EVFs and MF film SLR OVFs. I draw the line there. A 5diii does take pictures, but it’s primitive applebook tier design makes it a camera shaped wall between you and life. Shit’s the size of a mamiya medium format. Give me a dated digital LEICA, however, and i’ll say gear doesn’t matter. Good rangefinders are timeless.
>>
>>4256037
basically this. mirrorless brought a package of quality of life and optics shit that used to be exclusive to leicas which are rare and expensive. you would never get something like the sony 40mm f2.5 on slrs, it requires that super shallow mount and mirror boxes block it, and if you get a body as small as the a7c it would be apsc with a shit pentamirror viewfinder and a hazy plastic fresnel for a focusing screen. and you would still be focusing through a soft lens wide open.

close to zero. If you like the concept snoy already has zv-e1 though, why wait for boomers at nikon?
Besides, if there is a camera in their inventory that they would've cut off the viewfinder from and sell it to dumbs (sorry) and vloggers, it's gonna be the Z5, not something better.

The gap between 3 and 4 is drastic enough in 2020+3, soon to be 4 that you shouldn't beat yourself up for it. The X-T3 is good, but prices for an X-T4 are starting to meteor the longer that the X-T5 is out, that it would be more worth your value getting an X-T4.

Greatest lens ever, even corrected for astigmatism. How many lenses are on the market that you can shoot stars and street lights at f/1.4? yeah

t. haver of that lens

>>4254395
Great lens, same optically as all the other 80-200 2.8s, even better than the frist 70-200 2.8 (but not on par with the VRII, which also got the tripot mount)
You'll have a bad surprise when you'll need to put it on a tripod, but for a price lower than a kit lens, heh...

t. Haver of both

This minimal thing only works at the beginning as then you'll become an hoarder and you can get outside with any kind of lens.

Anyway, the first lens I bought was the 180 2.8, bought for less than a kit lens more than 10 years ago, it is one of the lenses I used the most as you get the focal length you'll always use with a 70-200 2.8 but on a, like, 700g package.

So, the 180 2.8, a 50 or 35mm 1.4 and a 14 1.8 or 20mm 1.4 for a 3 lenses kit on a D800 or a D810

I don't mean to sound cocky or ignorant on how Europe works, but can't you look at other markets in the EU for used gear like France, Belgium, or Spain for example?

>>4258491
You can, it may or may not be more difficult to get it to ship though, and going through national websites is a pain due to different languages and not knowing where to look. In any case MPB ships anywhere in continental Europe from Germany and sets the used market rate. You can get better deals from individuals but you may spend a lot of time looking for it if you don't live in a huge metro area.

>>
>>4258713
It's the anti-glare coating on the screen, very common to happen over time, and very common with Sony specifically.
Putting a screen protector on will help prevent further degradation. You could try wipe it off completely too, but then you lose the anti-glare aspect. If it were mine, I'd honestly just keep using as-is until it got much worse.
