Does anyone have tips for focusing for photographing birds? I have a Canon R6 with the animal detect AF, and use back button focus, but I took about 170 photos of this bird and almost none were solid hits on the focus.

Anon… you filled the frame with more bird using an 85mm equivalent than most gearfags do using a 800mm equivalent on their brand new gh6. You have skills. unless you’re snapping eagles flying over swamps buy the fuji 55-200 and call your kit finished.

Try to avoid busy backgrounds. Hard to do with birds I know.
Also avoid extreme ground - branch angles. You can bend that rule but don't break it. Sometimes that angle can be used in the right situation. See photo for example.

The backgrounds are usually quite out of focus for me. With the starling it just kinda was a quick set of shots, so I'm getting some idea at least. Would maybe also help if I got a better telephoto because I just have the kit 70-300mm, I just feel like the subject should also be sharper. I used a more expensive 50mm prime and the difference between that and the 18-55mm kit lens was unreal.

I know he asked, and I gave an honest answer: Shoot and learn on your own before looking to others. That's truly what I believe to be the right course of action, especially very early on. You're going to learn much more effectively by experimenting and making all the mistakes and figuring out how to avoid them. It's the most valuable kind of experience there is. It's also my belief that people who need to ask about everything (especially right out of the gate) are very weak on individualism and that's just gross. A little initiative goes a long way.
>>
>>4255180

Moving from skill level 1 shouldn't require any help. You're just being completely lazy and not even paying attention to your camera for starters. RTFM.

It's annoying to see people who just press the shutter release with no thought or effort immediately resort to asking for help. Figure it the fuck out. Take test shots and look at them. Remember things you do.

Ignoring all photography advice until you hit a wall with your photography is the best advice you could possibly get since it will help you to develop your own style and techniques.

If you're posting facebook-tier snapshits then you are nowhere near exploring and experimenting yet. Figure it the fuck out on your own and you will be much happier. Why would you want to cheapen the experience by relying on others? You only get to be new once, don't fuck it up by handing it away. Or just follow orders and kill your love for the hobby, whatever. That's why there's so much used gear for sale from people who all make the same excuses.

If you think these words are rude or hateful or discouraging then you are a fucking idiot. Grow a fucking spine, gain some self-respect, and figure it the fuck out.

There's no need to be upset. On the beach shot I am low down, the bird is on a slope, you can tell from its pose. I might shoot it differently if I did it today but, as you can imagine, you don't get too much time with a bird that close.

Keep polishing those turds and laser focusing on the one criticism you feel you have control over. So the main thing I've learned in the past few days out shooting birds is shutter speed needs to be way faster than I thought. If little birds are moving then even 2500th might not be fast enough

It just reminds me of what it looks like when you crop a d850 at iso 3200 or shoot a high res snoy in the dark. Might want to invest in topaz or deepprime there buddy. Sandpaper isn’t a good look.
>>
>>4257423
Well 800iso on mft is the same as 3200 on FF, so....
>>
>>4257425
but the noise is larger and blockier. You have a tabular grain look you could lean into with film presets but otherwise i’s go for a stronger denoise.
>>
>>4257427
Yeah, AI deboise was a factor when I decided to go mft. But noise doesn't bother me as much as a lot of people here.

Could've did better on this shot of Cormorants. Beyond the compositional issue (kicking myself for not adjusting to get the second one in frame), not sure if the shot settings were good or if I just screwed up bad.
