yup, good lens, I also use an ISCO-Gottingen 135/4 preset for max swirl and it's also a great lens

200/4 is also a great lens, the Soviet stuff is okay but really only the 58/2, 85/2 and Mir 1b stand out, everything else is okay until you stop it down

The best for the buck in my collection is my minolta 28mm 2.5, the old hill and valley version. Cost me like $85, and gave me some of my favorite photos over the years.

trying to think of a Christmas gift for my mom. She loves birds and wildlife and nature and is always sending me really bad phone pictures of things. she bought an s20 ultra I believe specifically for the ability to zoom. was wondering if it was possible to get an *acceptable* birding camera for around $200?
maybe an old DSLR and a 300mm or something? I see lots of dslr cameras and lenses going for basically nothing. Like I said doesn't need to be anything great just something that's going to be better than her phone at 10x zoom to put in the family emails.

Here's a fun cheap one for you guys. Sigma AF SUPER-WIDE II 24mm f/2.8. On canon EOS, it only works at f/2.8 because it's coded wrong for newer cameras. Works at all apertures on EOS film cameras and the 1D. Has quite a bit of barrel distortion also. But very fun and usually $40 on ebay.

I've been looking for a Nikon AI-S 105mm f/2.5. I keep reading about how inexpensive they can be, but when I look through eBay, the only copies I can find that don't report moderate optical issues or fungus were $180 or more. Where I live I bought Canon 350D and 70-300mm EF-mount Tamron with small fungus growing for around 150 EUR. I am to clean it yet, but I've made a few shots with it and I'm really happy with it. On APS-C sensor the crop factor makes it effectively a 480-500mm tele on narrower end. In the morning I can provide some samples from it, haven't edited them yet, but JPEGs out of the camera look pretty good to me, as I like the Canon color science.

Cleaning it is time consuming and requires knowledge and tools. Paying to have it cleaned can cost more than the lens.

You will see the fungus, trust me. You can also light a bright led flashlight through the lens to see all the dirt, fungus, etc inside.
Regarding cheap camera, try to get Canon 350D or 300D, an EF-FD adapter and some FD lens. I suggest FD-mount 50mm f1.8 S.C. You should be getting that for around $50-$70 and it will perform really well. Granted it is full manual lens, so no AF

I'm not experienced with Nikon, I've only had Canon. That's why I'm recommending it, as I know that those models are realy capable and are a good starting point.
Regarding AF: Canon has 4 mounts that you need to be aware of; FD, EF/EF-S, EF-M and RF. FD is an old mount designed for film cameras and can be adapted to EF mount, which EOS 300/350D use. As it was developed in the 1960s, no AF, no electronics, no automatic mode. But they are much cheaper than newer lenses and offer better quality for the price. EF-mount 50mm f1.8 STM from Canon costs arount $100, where FD-mount 50mm f1.8 costs $20-$30.

Difference is the physical size of the sensor, it's the great debate on /p/.. if you don't have any local marketplaces I think it's hard to get good deal, prices on ebay look way too high for old cameras. Maybe something like sony nex or samsung nx, but as a general tip the old full frames look like a much better buy

Full frame photos are less noisy and more detailed unless the camera is hilariously out of reach of what crop can do ie: 62mp per shot, or very old, then they might be as noisy at super high ISO settings you will never use.

I do have a local market, it asks like 70$ for 60k shutter count nikon d300 body, and the eos d5 mark 2 are like 300$ at least.

I just got that person the money, I might get nikon d300 just for myself to see what photography is and how to operate a decent camera. There's also another friend who took photography classes but never had his own proper camera, so if I dislike the craft I'll just give him the camera.
