>>4251475It's average, I have it in m42. It's okay. The 200mm f4 m42 super takumar is stunningly sharp however
>>4251490It its sharp? Unless of course you are kind of cocksucker that shoots everything at 1.4
I don't know if can be any better. My MC Jupiter 37AM is incredibly sharp
>>4251560I have an olympic Jupiter-37A without multicoating and with scratched back element. It's sharp, sure, even with a speedbooster, but contrast fucking sucks and MC version is more expensive than SMC Takumar.
>>4251526what's wrong with being a cock sucker?
>>4251475yup, good lens, I also use an ISCO-Gottingen 135/4 preset for max swirl and it's also a great lens200/4 is also a great lens, the Soviet stuff is okay but really only the 58/2, 85/2 and Mir 1b stand out, everything else is okay until you stop it down

The best for the buck in my collection is my minolta 28mm 2.5, the old hill and valley version. Cost me like $85, and gave me some of my favorite photos over the years. trying to think of a Christmas gift for my mom. She loves birds and wildlife and nature and is always sending me really bad phone pictures of things. she bought an s20 ultra I believe specifically for the ability to zoom. was wondering if it was possible to get an *acceptable* birding camera for around $200?maybe an old DSLR and a 300mm or something? I see lots of dslr cameras and lenses going for basically nothing. Like I said doesn't need to be anything great just something that's going to be better than her phone at 10x zoom to put in the family emails. Would this be even worth the money at this budget or just don't bother?

What's a good website for cheap gear? Looking for Pentax and Nikon
Here's a fun cheap one for you guys. Sigma AF SUPER-WIDE II 24mm f/2.8. On canon EOS, it only works at f/2.8 because it's coded wrong for newer cameras. Works at all apertures on EOS film cameras and the 1D. Has quite a bit of barrel distortion also. But very fun and usually $40 on ebay.[EXIF data available. I've been looking for a Nikon AI-S 105mm f/2.5. I keep reading about how inexpensive they can be, but when I look through eBay, the only copies I can find that don't report moderate optical issues or fungus were $180 or more. Maybe those articles were written 3+ years ago before the economy began to nosedive.
>>4252967Oh wow, how come I haven't heard about these compared to the Voigtlaenders? Way more affordable and they look acceptably sharp wide open. The 50mm would make a great cheap portrait option on MFT I'd think but I might nab a 25mm for regular low light shooting.
>>4255413also ebay will always be priced to the highest bidder.Local auctions, classifieds and thrift stores is where the actual bargains are at.
>>4253451Where I live I bought Canon 350D and 70-300mm EF-mount Tamron with small fungus growing for around 150 EUR. I am to clean it yet, but I've made a few shots with it and I'm really happy with it. On APS-C sensor the crop factor makes it effectively a 480-500mm tele on narrower end. In the morning I can provide some samples from it, haven't edited them yet, but JPEGs out of the camera look pretty good to me, as I like the Canon color science.

>>4251475Hello everybody, I'm new to /p/ board, and came here with a question. I have a friend that would want to get into photography, and a budget of like 50$ for a gift. Is this the right thread to ask for camera advice ? Is Canon EOS 300D a good starting point with it's stock lenses ? Usually different tech pieces have it's "cheap and old but legendary model" (like akg k240) and I wonder if this camera is like that.
>>4251475Is buying lens with fungus worth it? Can I get them cleaned easily and have a lens for cheap?
>>4256514Fungus eats coatings and etches glass. Don’t buy if you aren’t ok with hazy pictures and weird flare. Cleaning it is time consuming and requires knowledge and tools. Paying to have it cleaned can cost more than the lens.
>>4256096eos 300d might be 'cheap and old but good'for cheap and old but legendary, i think canon 5d mk i aka 5d classic and nikon d700 are the ones
>>4256528Nikon d700 photos look really really good, but it's usually 300-400$ here, which is much more than I can spare. Same with 5d mk1, which I can't even find on the market. Are nikon d80 and d300 any good ? Also, how can I determine if the lenses the camera is sold with have fungus.
>>4256540You will see the fungus, trust me. You can also light a bright led flashlight through the lens to see all the dirt, fungus, etc inside. Regarding cheap camera, try to get Canon 350D or 300D, an EF-FD adapter and some FD lens. I suggest FD-mount 50mm f1.8 S.C. You should be getting that for around $50-$70 and it will perform really well. Granted it is full manual lens, so no AF
>>4256859Why going for manual focus lenses instead of auto focus lenses ? They're cheaper and offer more control ?Also, any thoughts on those nikon models I mentioned? They look decent and a tad bit more capable. I was never interested in photography, but EOS 300 and generally well taken pictures with those cameras just pop with color and look really nice despite the noise and resolution. Kind of start considering trying it as a hobby now
>>4256882I'm not experienced with Nikon, I've only had Canon. That's why I'm recommending it, as I know that those models are realy capable and are a good starting point.Regarding AF: Canon has 4 mounts that you need to be aware of; FD, EF/EF-S, EF-M and RF. FD is an old mount designed for film cameras and can be adapted to EF mount, which EOS 300/350D use. As it was developed in the 1960s, no AF, no electronics, no automatic mode. But they are much cheaper than newer lenses and offer better quality for the price. EF-mount 50mm f1.8 STM from Canon costs arount $100, where FD-mount 50mm f1.8 costs $20-$30.
>>4256889Yeah, I've heard about canon d300 and etc, that's why I placed it in the original question. I honestly kind of wonder how people would go around telling smartphone cameras replaced dedicated cameras, while average smartphone photo looking like complete dogshit compared to photos of cameras from fucking 2005-2007
>>4255119mpb.com
>>4255973excellent
Can someone recommend a good vintage lens in the 22-35mm range?
>>4256540>>4256859Don't buy a camera with no live view, especially for use with manual lenses. For full frame maybe 5D2 is the cheapest alternative, but also 6D is getting really affordable. And crop sensor cameras can be had for nothing, at least around here
>>4257175Define good
>>4257353Those are really nice cameras, and they are cheap for good cameras, but still outside my humble gift budget. What's the difference between crop and full frame cameras ? Photo aspect ratio ? Thanks for your points anyway
>>4257367Difference is the physical size of the sensor, it's the great debate on /p/.. if you don't have any local marketplaces I think it's hard to get good deal, prices on ebay look way too high for old cameras. Maybe something like sony nex or samsung nx, but as a general tip the old full frames look like a much better buy
>>4257367Full frame photos are less noisy and more detailed unless the camera is hilariously out of reach of what crop can do ie: 62mp per shot, or very old, then they might be as noisy at super high ISO settings you will never use.
>>4258161I do have a local market, it asks like 70$ for 60k shutter count nikon d300 body, and the eos d5 mark 2 are like 300$ at least. I just got that person the money, I might get nikon d300 just for myself to see what photography is and how to operate a decent camera. There's also another friend who took photography classes but never had his own proper camera, so if I dislike the craft I'll just give him the camera.
