Photography is a big hobby in Japan, you'll see tons of locals with big DSLRs and huge fuckoff zooms taking pictures in temples and touristy areas, it's only fair to do the same

Just be aware of the people around and if you notice people afraid to enter the shot, smile and slightly bow to tell em its okay; you got time on your side and can wait a bit

Your phone is a wide-angle lens, so you'd have to zoom in, or crop in post to get the same look for a lot of these.
You also will need your phone to have some manual controls, e.g., some of these photos are intentionally a lot darker than your phone wants to do, so you have to be able to override that. Also, for shots of wildlife or lamps swinging in the breeze, you'll need manual control of the phone's shutter speed in order to freeze them and get a sharp image.

Basically it's going to be a lot more tedious, finicky, and the images will end up lower quality and lower resolution than with a real camera.
Still, for static subjects in good light, you can still take good photos that are like these. Just make sure you wipe the lens clean before trying to take a shot.

I don't think there's a "better" way to take a photo and every different photo here is gonna capture the photographer's emotions, which will be different. I wasn't thinking of coziness, but rather the dramatic neon cityscape that Shinjuku is. To the second photographer, keep it up man, I enjoy your take on the scene just as much as my own!

Cultural thing too. You bring back something from your travels to share. One region is known for it's pottery, you bring back pottery. Another is known for its manju, you bring back manju. Travel to a foreign country, you buy trinkets with the country/region/city name on it. When Tokyo Disneyland opened, it was the first Disney park to feature the place name on it for that reason.
